In this episode of The Purposeful Strategist, Belden Menkus speaks with Stuart Wallace, Chief Executive of Forth Ports Limited, about what it takes to lead critical national infrastructure at a moment of profound transition — and what a long career inside one organisation teaches you about strategy, culture, and purpose.Stuart joined Forth Ports in 2002 as financial controller for its Scottish operations, making a habit of getting to know people in other roles and ‘what makes the business tick.' He became COO in 2016 and Chief Executive in 2024, having held nine different roles across the group. Today, Forth Ports handles around 30 million tonnes of cargo a year across eight sites, employs over 1,300 people, and holds statutory harbour authority responsibility for the Forth and Tay estuaries. In their conversation, they discuss:• What ports do, and what's at stake if they don't work, particularly for an island nation like the UK.• The purpose of Forth Ports to act as an economic driver for trade and their other areas of operation, and how this purpose is supported by their strong values of collaboration and dependability.• How Forth Ports approached the energy transition: recognising that the market was pivoting to renewables and investing in offshore wind infrastructure at Dundee without a single contract in place. They are now delivering foundations for a 1.2 gigawatt wind farm out of Leith.• The discipline of long-horizon strategy: why a port operator can take infrastructure risk that other businesses can't, and how Stuart thinks about investment decisions for assets that will still matter many decades from now.• What it means to lead a business that is simultaneously commercial, statutory, and community-rooted, and how Stuart has made the organisation's values felt on the ground, not just posted on a wall.Forth Ports: https://www.forthports.co.uk/Menkus & Associates: https://www.menkus.com/Supported by Norman Broadbent: https://www.normanbroadbent.com/Belden Menkus is the Managing Director of Menkus & Associates, a senior strategic advisory practice that provides strategic clarity for businesses with a public remit, where scrutiny is high, governance is complex, and the answers aren't obvious. In this episode of The Purposeful Strategist, Belden Menkus speaks with Ben Fletcher, Chief Executive of Logistics UK, about what it means to be the voice for an industry that employs 2.7 million people, makes up around 8–9% of the UK economy, and underpins almost every aspect of daily life.Ben came to Logistics UK from Make UK, the trade association for manufacturing, where a decade of experience at the intersection of government, policy, and industry left him convinced that logistics was the missing link in the UK's economic growth story. In their conversation, they discuss:• Why logistics is the precondition for economic growth, not simply a contributor, and why Ben believes government has yet to fully grasp that dependency.• The organisation Ben inherited: 22,000 member organisations spanning SMEs and global firms, 350 staff, 130 years of history, with a well-regarded vehicle inspection and compliance business operating in a competitive market.• A strategy for becoming the single voice for an industry covering road, rail, air, and sea transport — and on making an economy-wide argument, not just a sector-specific one, to put logistics at the centre of national policy debate.• The role of data and anecdote in political influence: how data gets you in the room, and how the right story from a member gets things done.• COVID as a test of the sector's public purpose — and what it revealed about an industry whose people kept going when most others stayed home.• How AI and technology can be transformative for efficiency in logistics, without replacing the human judgment that still sits at the controls of vehicles, trains, planes, and ships.• Both challenges and optimism for the workforce: an ageing industry, a compelling social mobility story, and a lobbying agenda that's pushing back on the assumption that a university degree is the only route to a successful career. In this episode of The Purposeful Strategist, Belden Menkus speaks with Colin Walsh, founder and Board Chair of Civitas ID, about the foundational struggle for the world's millions of displaced people: the ability to prove their identity across borders, and the infrastructure needed to enable it.Colin's career in financial services, including as CEO of Varo Bank, taught him that some of the most difficult problems of exclusion are upstream of banking access, and lie in proving identity. He is tackling this problem with Civitas through building open-source digital public infrastructure for the roughly 123 million people currently living in a state of forced displacement. In their conversation, they discuss:Why identity is a foundational barrier for displaced people trying to access work, banking, healthcare, and education, and how documentation failures trap people in limbo. The structure of Civitas (a US nonprofit) and Etymos (a public benefit corporation): how the two organizations work together to serve both the public good and the private sector participants, banks, lenders, employers, whose engagement is essential to facilitating inclusion. Why technology is not the only factor: how Colin and his team stress-test ideas directly with displaced communities, why policy reform and advocacy matter as much as technology, and what genuine listening, as opposed to validation-seeking, looks like in practice.Kenya and Colombia as pilot markets, and what the contrast between the two markets reveals about pace, partnership, and the conditions that enable systemic change.Civitas ID: https://www.civitasid.org/Etymos: https://www.etymosid.com/Menkus & Associates: https://www.menkus.com/Supported by Norman Broadbent: https://www.normanbroadbent.com/Belden Menkus is the Managing Director of Menkus & Associates, a senior strategic advisory practice that provides strategic clarity for businesses with a public remit, where scrutiny is high, governance is complex, and the answers aren't obvious. In this episode of The Purposeful Strategist, Belden Menkus speaks with Sarah Waddington, Chief Executive of the PRCA, the world's largest professional body for public relations and communications. She discusses what it means to represent the PR sector through uncertain times, and why the moment calls for a renewed understanding of what PR is and what it does.Sarah brings two decades of experience across agency leadership, governance, and industry development, and she discusses how she has reoriented the PRCA's mission and unify the membership body through changing times. In their conversation, they discuss:· Why public relations is not media relations or crisis management, but a strategic management discipline — and why that distinction matters enormously for how organisations use it and what they get from it.· What Sarah found when she stepped into the CEO role, and how she rebuilt confidence by renewing the vision, mission and values and making them the basis for every decision.· The PRCA's two-pronged strategy: First, to increase understanding of what PR is and does, backed by a new industry definition. Second, to build a sector that is inclusive by default.· The AI and reputation challenge — why organisations that are not actively managing their brand narrative and monitoring for misinformation are exposed in ways they may not fully appreciate, and what a strategic PR adviser can do about it.· What drew Sarah to the role: her conviction, built over years of industry engagement, that PR has a larger contribution to make — not just to commercial outcomes, but to the wicked problems of fractured communities, damaged trust, and the narratives that either divide or bring people together.PRCA: https://www.prca.org.uk/Menkus & Associates: https://www.menkus.com/Supported by Norman Broadbent: https://www.normanbroadbent.com/Belden Menkus is the Managing Director of Menkus & Associates, a senior strategic advisory practice that provides strategic clarity for businesses with a public remit, where scrutiny is high, governance is complex, and the answers aren't obvious. In this episode of The Purposeful Strategist, Belden Menkus speaks with Scott Heath, CEO of DJH, about what it takes to grow a professional services firm at pace without losing the culture that made it work in the first place.Scott joined DJH in 2003, and has led its transformation from a £4.5 million turnover business to one approaching £80 million in revenue across 16 UK sites. In their conversation, they discuss:· Why culture comes before strategic fit in every acquisition decision — a lesson learned from a formative early experience when a cultural mismatch caused a team to walk out.· The discipline of running lean: how managing the business tightly during early growth instilled principles that still govern how DJH operates today.· How DJH used the first year of PE investment to build the operational platform — governance, technology, and client service infrastructure — before scaling further, and how that foundation now enables robust AI deployment and a specialist-led service model at scale.· What Scott has learned about leadership as the firm has grown, particularly the shift from ‘doing' to ‘listening,' the power of ‘people-first' values, and the importance of surrounding oneself with experts in their domain. In this episode of The Purposeful Strategist, Belden Menkus speaks with Patrick Heath-Lay, CEO of People's Partnership, about how the organisation behind The People's Pension has grown into one of the UK's largest workplace pension providers, and what it takes to build a system that works for millions. They explore the organisation's transformation from its roots in the construction industry, the impact of automatic enrolment, and how a not-for-profit, profit-to-member model shapes decision-making at scale. In their conversation, they discuss:• What a master trust pension is and how it works in practice.• How legislative change forced a strategic reinvention of the organisation.• Balancing commercial discipline with member outcomes in a purpose-driven business.• Why the pensions system must work for those who don't actively engage with it.People's Partnership: https://peoplespartnership.co.uk/MenKus & Associates: https://www.menkus.com/Supported by Norman Broadbent: https://www.normanbroadbent.com/ Belden Menkus is the Managing Director of Menkus & Associates, a senior strategic advisory practice that provides strategic clarity for businesses with a public remit, where scrutiny is high, governance is complex, and the answers aren't obvious. Get ready to dive back into the neon-soaked streets of L.A. and beyond! In this episode of Elton Reads A Book A Week, Elton takes on the ambitious crime epic Heat 2—the novel that somehow manages to be both a prequel and a sequel to Michael Mann's legendary 1995 film.Ever wondered what made Neil McCauley so cold or how Vincent Hanna became a "hyper-caffeinated" detective with a failing personal life? Elton also digs into the fascinating true story that inspired the original film, involving a real-life high-stakes meeting in a Chicago deli between a meticulous detective and a professional thief who lived by a 30-second rule.Expect plenty of Elton's signature "cinephile" rants, some very questionable theories about whether Chicago actually exists, and a recurring battle with his producer, [BLEEP], over whether the show needs more machine-gun sound effects. What began with the last £200 of Joe's student loan has become a fast-scaling organisation of 25 colleagues, more than 40 enterprise partners, and over 15,000 students supported into higher education.Joe explains how Zero Gravity has reimagined a sector traditionally dominated by charities by building a new commercial model. Through a mobile-first platform that turns university preparation into a habit, the company partners with institutions to identify exceptional talent, while generating data that shows where ability is being overlooked. Joe reflects on how entrepreneurial discipline and knowing what not to do have enabled the organisation to scale impact without scaling its team.In their conversation, they explore:· How a for-profit model can unlock new incentives for social change.· What it means to compete for young people's attention against major consumer platforms.· Why collecting data early enables future breakthroughs.· How impact and organisational growth are not the same thing.· How technology can scale opportunity with precision — and change lives at scale.Zero Gravity: https://www.zerogravity.co.uk/MenKus & Associates: https://www.menkus.com/Supported by Norman Broadbent: https://www.normanbroadbent.com/Belden Menkus, Managing Director of Menkus & Associates, works with CEOs and senior leaders to align their strategy and purpose. In this episode of The Purposeful Strategist, Belden Menkus speaks with Jay Shen, Founder and CEO of Transreport, the purpose-driven technology company reshaping accessibility in travel. What began as a single conversation about inequality has grown into the Passenger Assistance app—now used across the UK rail network, recognised as one of the most accessible apps on iOS, and forming the foundation of Transreport's rapid international expansion.Jay shares how Transreport's mission—to remove barriers and make travel work for everyone—drives both the company's product design and its culture. He reflects on the importance of involving people with lived experience at every stage, why accessibility can't be an afterthought, and how balancing innovation with thoughtful design creates technology that genuinely improves lives. From navigating the complexities of 24 UK rail systems to adapting the platform for Japan, Jay offers an inside look at building a scalable, global model for inclusive travel. In their conversation, they explore:• The origin story behind Transreport and the inequality that sparked its creation.• How a hybrid B2C/B2B model maximises customer experience and operational value.• Why lived-experience users play a central role in product development.• The trade-offs between speed of innovation and accessible design.• How Transreport adapted its platform for Japan's transport systems and communities.• The potential for AI to transform accessibility and rethink how disabled people interact with technology.• Why mission-aligned investors matter for long-term stability and purpose.• How prioritising accessibility ultimately creates better experiences for all passengers.Interested in learning more?Transreport: https://transreport.co.uk/Menkus and Associates: https://www.menkus.com/Supported by Norman Broadbent: https://www.normanbroadbent.com/Belden Menkus is the Managing Director of Menkus & Associates, a London-based advisory firm working with CEOs and senior teams to align strategy with purpose. I remember when I started my veterinary career: someone told me that, although I was skilled and had just graduated from vet school, the older local veterinarian had more experience. I responded that just because he was old doesn't mean he was aware of the new techniques and knowledge I had just learned. This dynamic remains unchanged, and it seems just as misguided now as it did back then. I now realize that, while horses haven't changed much over the thousands of years they have coexisted with humans, our approach to their care has evolved significantly. I often turn to the wisdom of my elders to deepen my understanding of modern horse veterinary care. One of my key mentors in this area is my friend, Dr. James Belden. He returns for the third time to share his invaluable insights from decades of work with horses. Just because Dr. Belden has been a veterinarian for over 65 years doesn't mean he isn't up to date with today's research. He is truly brilliant and will impress you with his current knowledge on many horse-related topics. I am grateful for this Thanksgiving holiday tradition of spending time with Dr. Belden. I'm thankful you're carving out a spot in your busy lives to listen to this replay. 2 minutes 11 seconds - [Deep Digital Flexor Tendon injury and diarrhea] I would love a fresh perspective on rehabbing a DDFT injury. It has been almost 3 years since the injury occurred. I have had PRP and shockwave done, and 4 rounds of stem cells. One distal perfusion and 3 subcutaneous injections spaced out over a year. "How hard do you push," and can pain cause stomach upset, i.e., diarrhea? 16 minutes 57 seconds - [Equine Herpes Virus - 1 neurologic form outbreak, prevention] Thoughts on the EHV-1 outbreak. When traveling with our horses, what precautions should we consider when they are in stalls at an event? I think next time I may spray the stall walls with a bleach solution. Ideas? Of course, I always bring my own buckets, etc. 26 minutes 35 seconds - [Skin condition with severe itching, mites] I continue to struggle with MITES… with the cold weather, my horse has become itchier and has dandruff in the mane, tail, neck, head, and ears…E S! He is itching his ear nonstop. It has dandruff and sores at the base. Ivermectin has resolved some of the problems. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks 44 minutes 10 seconds - Various topics and stories with Dr. Belden. ********** Community.TheHorsesAdvocate.com is a place to learn about horses, horse barns, and farms. He discusses Axiom's four-pillar model, their ability to pilot and deploy AI tools at pace, and why flexibility is no longer “alternative” but increasingly the norm.In their conversation, they explore:• How Axiom's strategy sits at the intersection of economic reality, technology disruption, and talent evolution.• Why flexibility is becoming the default model for in-house legal teams—and what this means for the profession.• The biggest misconceptions law leaders have about AI, and why organisational readiness matters more than tool selection.• How Axiom uses rapid piloting, data, and client feedback to drive innovation and value.• What it will take for legal leaders to seize the current moment of turbulence as an opportunity rather than a threat.Axiom: https://www.axiomlaw.com/en-gb/Menkus and Associates: https://www.menkus.com/Supported by Norman Broadbent: https://www.normanbroadbent.com/Belden Menkus is the Managing Director of Menkus & Associates, a London-based advisory firm working with CEOs and senior teams to align strategy with purpose. Salem, Oregon has always been a city of secrets—but few run as deep as those hidden within the Delaney-Edwards House. Before this graceful landmark hosted seances and afternoon tea, it was the stage for greed, betrayal, and one of the most shocking crimes in Oregon's early history. When wealthy settler Daniel Delaney Sr. was gunned down just outside his front door in 1865, the investigation pulled back the curtain on a frontier community built on contradictions—prosperity and prejudice, freedom and bondage. The killing set off one of Salem's first sensational murder trials, culminating in Oregon's first double hanging. But behind the spectacle lay a deeper story—one that exposes the uneasy truths of race, power, and “justice” in a young state still defining its conscience. At its heart is Rachel Belden Brooks, the woman Delaney once enslaved and brought to Oregon in defiance of the territory's laws. Years later, she would take his estate to court, demanding wages for decades of unpaid labor and claiming her own measure of justice. And there was Jack DeWolf, the young Black boy whose brave eyewitness testimony helped bring two killers to the gallows—though the memory would haunt him, and the city itself, for life. From whispered fortunes and back-room confessions to the gallows built beneath Salem's oak trees, this story unearths the complicated legacy of a place where law and morality often diverged. If the walls of the Delaney-Edwards House could talk, they'd have plenty to say about gold, guilt, and ghosts—and the many lives intertwined within its walls that refused to be forgotten.GET TICKETS to Ghosts of the Grand! What happens when a man spends decades surviving, but never truly living? In this powerful and deeply personal episode, poet, coach, and men's trauma specialist Rick Belden joins us to explore how childhood wounds - especially those inflicted by emotionally absent or unsafe parents - can shape and limit a man's entire adult life. Rick shares his journey from high-achieving student to sawmill worker, reluctant software engineer, and ultimately, to a man who rediscovered his true self through art, writing, and inner work. This is a raw and resonant conversation about masculinity, trauma, and healing. Rick speaks candidly about the "father wound" and "mother wound," the toll of survival strategies adopted in childhood, and the long path toward reconnecting with a lost inner voice. He discusses the role of creativity, dreamwork, and journaling in recovering authenticity, and offers wise, grounded advice for men who feel stuck, shut down, or disconnected from who they really are. For anyone navigating the emotional fallout of midlife or searching for meaning after years of suppressing their truth, this episode offers rare insight, compassion, and hope. Welcome to the Explorer Poet Podcast. This episode will be a bit different. Rather than one guest, this is a group call, with a discussion facilitated by Rick Belden, who was first on the podcast back in Episode 51. He returns here for what was a virtual night of exploring personal stories, the processing of grief, and the pathway to healing. On the call, we discussed questions such as - What is a Mother Wound? What is a Father Wound? What is our inner child? How can we access and heal earlier versions of ourselves? And how do we become connected to those inner selves? Rick is an artist, poet, and coach who works with men to solve difficult emotional, personal, and relational challenges. He's a great listener, is full of insights and experience, and I truly enjoyed my evening with Rick and the others who joined the call. This podcast is a special Rounds With Doc T with my friend and colleague, Dr James Belden. Usually, Rounds are for members of The Horse's Advocate, but as an annual Thanksgiving treat, it is available for everyone to watch or listen to. Dr Belden graduated from Cornell's veterinary school in 1964. He has worked on horses in 30 countries, many Triple Crown winners in the Thoroughbred racing world, and many elite show horses in Wellington, FL. He has also competed with his reining horses. His knowledge comes from working on hundreds of thousands of horses in all sports categories. Dr Belden tells stories of his work with horses, blending his experience into impactful ideas for all to use with their horses today. Practical advice sparkles throughout as he also answers questions from the audience. I hope you enjoy and learn from this veterinary treasure. Timestamps: 0:53:14 - A question about equine sarcoid treatment. 0:58:59 - "What forgotten treatments or old timely treatments and remedies are as effective or maybe more effective than newer advanced treatments and pharmaceuticals and supplements used? What things do you wish people would do instead of spend money, and aggressively go after things that, you know, like when is ice better, for instance? And what are the simple things that still really, really work?" 1:08:22 - "Would you guys say that there's a difference in the growth or maturity rate between a filly and a colt?" 1:11:23 - "Do you see the difference in the maturity if you leave a male horse intact longer, say maybe 4 to 5 years old, or rather than cut them at a long yearling or a two-year-old, do they mature any differently?" 1:18:32 - "A pre-purchase exam. What were they like in the 60s, 70s, the 80s? And do you think they actually help buyers? Obviously, there's obvious things that you can find, like a blind horse, things like that. But yeah, people are looking for such subtle changes. What's your whole thought on this? Give us a little bit of history of pre-purchase exams and what you think of them now." 1:32:34 - "Any suggestions for non sweater?" ********** TheHorsesAdvocate.com is a website for learning about horses, horse barns, and farms. All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome Anne Belden, Paul Gullixson, and Beth Eurotas-Steffy as guest to the show. About "Inflamed": “Inflamed” is a story about the abandonment of more than 100 senior citizens at a luxury senior living complex during a catastrophic wildfire in California's Wine Country in 2017. The book offers an hour-by-hour account of the desperate attempts by family members and others to reach and rescue their loved ones from Villa Capri, an assisted living and memory care center, and Varenna, a massive independent living community. The book then chronicles the battle for truth and accountability against the facility's powerful owners who tried to deny what happened and silence their critics, going as far as financing a million-dollar recall of the district attorney who investigated the botched fire evacuation. About Anne Belden: Anne Belden runs the journalism program and advises the newsroom at Santa Rosa Junior College. Before teaching, she spent 18 years as a journalist, working as a reporter and editor on the San Francisco Peninsula where her news, feature, and investigative articles were recognized by the California Newspaper Publishers Association, San Francisco Peninsula Press Club, and Parenting Publications of America. Anne holds a bachelor's degree in mass communication from UCLA and a master's degree in media studies from Stanford University. She lives in Sebastopol, California. About Paul Gullixson: Paul Gullixson is a seasoned journalist with more than 35 years of experience working for West Coast newspapers, including The Press Democrat, the San Francisco Chronicle and other Bay Area newspapers. As columnist and editorial writer for The Press Democrat, he played a key role in the newspaper winning the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the October 2017 fires. Paul currently serves as Communications Manager for the County of Sonoma. He lives in Santa Rosa, California.
Far too often, eldercare reform is presented as a binary choice between mortal adversaries: providers who believe that regulators are out to get them, and regulators who assume every provider is up to no good. The truth is obviously more complicated, and leaders like Jennifer Belden prove that there are ways to protect residents' rights while also working with providers to improve the lives of elders. With a long background in health care, Belden brings both on-the-ground experience and a healthy dose of compassion to her work as director of Michigan's Bureau of Survey and Certification. She joins “Elevate Eldercare” to discuss her role and her ideas for a future where regulators and forward-thinking providers can achieve the shared goal of quality care and quality of life. Send us a text31 minutes of today's full show link below, I tell you about my experience with Milton and what is happening on the ground in Florida. I am triggered by Michael Butler from Southern charm, being in a Sarasota home, struggling to recover from a second stroke when a hurricane barrels into his area, I wonder about how he's doing and how other older people in these are being addressed. There are so many horror stories and coverups happening surrounding under represented people or elderly people in disaster being left behind to die. Therefore I invite award-winning authors and Anna Belden and Paul Gullixson to talk about their book inflamed. It occurs to me with my experience with Milton that now is a good time to have this conversation about the elderly being abandoned during catastrophic events. There book tells the harrowing story of how elderly were left to die in October 2017 wine country fires and thus also happened during hurricanes in Florida. I tell you about a horrific coverup and retaliation by rich people to protect their political agendas so they can keep cutting corners and getting rich while our elderly parents and grand parents suffer. It takes a lot for me to get activated But when I finally learned the truth, I can't help myself and neither will you! Today's show is a little off the beaten path, but given Milton right on point. Send me a text message!Today's conversation concerns an important wellness topic that is not frequently addressed – the connection between faith and healing. I am so excited to be joined by an incredible group of chiropractic doctors who have much to say about this topic – Nick Belden, Luke Werth, Sam Wetherell, and Micah Sasser. We discuss topics including recognizing the importance of having an eternal perspective when facing an illness, how to know when to wait on God & when to act, how God heals, and trusting God to clean up after our messes. This was one of my favorite conversations to date, and I hope that it blesses and encourages you as much as it did me!Suggested Resources:Dr. Nick Belden, DC Website | Instagram | Gut Check Radio PodcastDr. Luke Werth, DC Facebook | Hill City ChiroDr. Sam Wetherell, DC | InstagramDr. Micah Sasser | Facebook | First Step Family WellnessThis episode is proudly sponsored by Wedderspoon, my go-to source for pure manuka honey.
