For former NFL player Major Wright, "Kill or be killed," has always been his mantra, the result of an incident in a local park at just seven-years-old that would forever change the course of his career. That pivotal moment would eventually lead Major to the University of Florida and a BCS Championship, to the Chicago Bears and an NFC Championship, to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the American Flag Football League. Now, Wright is CEO of The Wright Baagz, a new line of book bags for the athlete. In the meantime, his Good Deed Tuesdays, #GDT, continue to provide mentorship to young athletes across the country. Influenced by NFL veterans like Brian Urlacher, Julius Peppers, and Lance Briggs, Wright shares words of wisdom for young athletes and NFL hopefuls. "No matter how great of a player you are, you will not see the field if you are not coachable." For more information about The Wright Baagz, visit: http://thewrightbaagz.xom

Stefan Fatsis and Josh Levin are joined by ESPN’s Howard Bryant to discuss the militarization of sports, Slate’s Christina Cauterucci talks about Jaelene Hinkle, and Deadspin’s Dom Cosentino assesses the future of flag football. Sports and the military (1:56): From flags the size of football fields to veterans throwing out the first pitch, sports and the military have become so closely tied since 9/11 that some forget it wasn’t always this way. What do veterans think of these patriotic pre-game displays? Jaelene Hinkle (19:08): Last year, the pro soccer player turned down a spot on the women’s national team because she didn’t want to wear a rainbow jersey during LGBTQ Pride Month. What should we make of U.S. Soccer’s decision to extend her another invitation? Flag football (36:39): The American Flag Football League just concluded its first complete season. As more and more kids are choosing not to play tackle football, is the flag version the future of the sport? Afterballs(56:12): Stefan on the Icelandic club Vikingur Reykjavik F.C. and Josh on Mississippi State’s search for a “ball coach.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Running backs are the main topic this week on Schooled with the Professor. Recently retired RB Fred Jackson talks about the halfback position and how it has changed through the years. Jackson had a long career with the Buffalo Bills and ended up with the Seattle Seahawks. He talked about his ex-teammate Marshawn Lynch, why he was so good, and his impact in the league. A big topic was the current running back position. When Jackson entered the NFL in 2006, backs had a heavier workload. Thousand-yard backs were plentiful. Last year there was only one RB who had 321 carries (roughly 20 carries a game) and only nine backs gained over 1,000 yards. As a result, only eight RBs are making $6 million a year or more. Jackson discusses the state of running backs in the NFL and hoping the position gets more respect in the near future. He may have retired from the NFL but Jackson is participating this Saturday in a flag football competition whose championship game on July 19 has a $1 million winner-take-all prize. Watch Saturday’s game at 4pm on the NFL Network.
