ALL ACCESS w/ Aditi – Aditi thought the comments by Terry Bradshaw on Aaron Rodgers ‘says it all.' Aditi said she has talked to plenty of people around the league who are ‘stunned' that the Steelers are just waiting around on Rodgers. Aditi isn't sure how much the Rodgers acquisition would even move the needle for the Steelers. Aditi also caught the comments made by Bradshaw on Kenny Pickett and why she has been on that train for months now. Aditi said it's a pretty common feeling in the NFL that Pickett was drafted into a dysfunctional situation and the Steelers failed him. Aditi isn't sold on the Browns keeping both of their rookie QBs on the active roster. Aditi is at Kennywood and said she doesn't like Potato Patch fries.

Mike gave reasons why he's bothered by what Rodgers is doing. Mike said it is exhausting to deal with Rodgers as a fan or follower of the team. Mike was going through some of the conspiracy theories of major events in recent American history. Does Mike think the Steelers should be worried at all about the TJ Watt contract situation? Kenny Pickett had some words for the Steelers organization today – is Pickett safe in Cleveland? Mike think it comes down to Pickett or Joe Flacco due to the other QBs in their room. (00:55) Rick Sebak occupies a special place in Pittsburgh's cultural landscape. For nearly four decades, he's crafted documentaries that capture the essence of our region, always with a keen eye for how food connects us to place and memory. "I celebrate Pittsburgh," he says simply, though his work does anything but take a simple approach to storytelling. What makes Rick's style so compelling is his deliberate choice to step away from the spotlight. "I never think I'm the story," he explains, preferring what a colleague once called "an explosion of voices" – letting the people he meets tell their own tales. This approach has carried him from showcasing local institutions like Kennywood and the bygone Original Hotdog Shop of Oakland, to traveling cross-country capturing America's diners, bakeries, and shoreline foods for national PBS audiences.(26:10) Our conversation weaves through Rick's formative upbringing with food – from his mother's home-cooked meals in Bethel Park to his transformative years abroad in France and Brazil. These experiences shaped not just his palate but his understanding that food tells our cultural story in ways politics and formal history often miss.(35:35) We explore his current projects, including the upcoming "Lucky to Live in Pittsburgh" premiering April 10th on WQED, featuring stories about Weatherbury Farm's ancient grains and other regional treasures. Rick also shares his latest Pittsburgh food experiences – from the Grant Bar's dual-style pork chops to Chaykhana's Uzbek cuisine in the West End. We end with a wine pick from Catherine Montest to pair with Rick's beloved 'cowboy' cookies. This episode offers a glimpse in cultural storytelling through the lens of what we eat, who prepares it, and how these experiences shape our memories and communities. As Rick puts it, quoting a saying he's adopted: "All food history is written on jello" – acknowledging both the fluidity and the fundamental importance of our culinary traditions.Support the showLiked the episode? Jim Futrell is the Historian for the National Amusement Park Historical Association and IAAPA. With over 40 years of experience researching and preserving amusement park history, Jim has authored multiple books and articles on the subject and is recognized as a leading voice in the field. In this interview, Jim talks about amusement park history, putting context on history, and shared experiences across generations. Amusement Park History “One of the first watershed moments in amusement park history was the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It gave birth to the modern amusement park industry.” Jim discussed how the exposition introduced the Midway Plaisance, which became a blueprint for amusement parks worldwide. Attractions like the Ferris wheel captivated visitors, and the fair's profitability from entertainment inspired park developers to embrace thrilling rides and immersive environments. Jim highlights key moments, such as the development of John Miller's under-friction wheel in 1919, which revolutionized roller coaster safety and design. This innovation allowed coasters to evolve from scenic rides to thrilling centerpieces of amusement parks. According to Jim, these milestones laid the foundation for the resilient and ever-evolving amusement park industry we know today. Putting Context on History “Being a true historian isn't just memorizing facts—it's about contextualizing them within a broader framework.” Jim emphasized how understanding historical context deepens our appreciation of amusement parks. For instance, he explored how global events like World War I and II transformed the industry. After World War II, the rise of suburbanization and interstate highways shifted parks from urban centers to sprawling suburban attractions, such as Disneyland. He also shared examples of how past myths about the industry, such as Disney's alleged detachment from IAAPA or the history of Blackpool Pleasure Beach's membership, were debunked through diligent research. For Jim, the essence of amusement park history lies in connecting these moments to broader societal changes. Shared Experiences Across Generations “Amusement parks are one of the few places where you can share the same experience across generations.” Jim passionately described how amusement parks enable families to create multi-generational memories. He shared a personal story about how his family has ridden Kings Island's carousel for six generations, underscoring the industry's ability to preserve nostalgia while remaining relevant to new audiences. Jim noted that balancing tradition with innovation is critical for parks. They must honor iconic attractions while introducing new experiences that resonate with modern guests. For example, parks like Knoebels and Kennywood have thrived by preserving their history and making forward-thinking investments.   Jim Futrell's dedication to preserving amusement park history offers valuable insights into how the industry's past shapes its future. Ricky's career journey started as a teenager in Kennywood's food and beverage department, selling hot sausages and hot dogs. This early role ignited a passion for food that would shape his career. After gaining experience at Idlewild and Sandcastle Waterpark, where he also led a multimillion-dollar rebranding project, Ricky returned to his roots at Kennywood, bringing full circle a lifelong connection to the park. In this interview, Ricky talks about treating every interaction like an interview, keeping history in every decision, and the Potato Patch Fries secret menu. Treating Every Interaction Like an Interview  "You have to treat every interaction as if it's an interview. No matter what... you're putting your best foot forward, you're selling yourself, you're selling your passion."   Ricky emphasized the importance of always being "on," whether interacting with consultants, park guests, or colleagues from other parks. He learned early in his career that these interactions build reputation and recognition. This mindset helped him grow from an entry-level food service role to becoming a general manager. Persistence and passion were key, as he constantly sought to be visible to leadership while maintaining a genuine love for the park and industry. Ricky's philosophy underscores the importance of professionalism in even the smallest encounters. History in Every Decision “Our history is in every decision we make, no matter what. Every project we do, we're thinking about the history of Kennywood."   At Kennywood, a park steeped in 126 years of history, every decision honors its past. Ricky spoke about how projects, whether a new ride or renovations, are always made with consideration for Kennywood's legacy. He shared examples like the installation of a modern ride that paid homage to the long-gone Swing Around, and the creation of Jeter's Pub, a nod to a mascot from the 1970s, which doubles as a museum filled with park memorabilia. This commitment to blending the old with the new ensures Kennywood remains relevant to both nostalgic long-time visitors and younger generations. The Potato Patch Fries Secret Menu “If you're feeling a little excited, you go, I just say like a tablespoon, that's all you need, of the gravy... the hidden way to do it."   Ricky shared his personal favorite way to enjoy Kennywood's famous Potato Patch Fries—seasoned salt, cheese, bacon, and just a tablespoon of gravy. This combination, he explains, adds a subtle richness without overwhelming the dish. Although this unique twist isn't officially on the menu, Ricky humorously suggests it could be considered part of a "secret menu." His love for food and attention to small details shine through as he shares this insider tip with pride.     To learn more about Kennywood, visit www.kennywood.com. For direct inquiries, Ricky Spicuzza can be reached via LinkedIn. If you've been listening to my show for awhile then you've likely heard me speak about my experience of being bullied as a teen and young adult. It's a matter which is near and dear to my heart and one that I try to bring awareness to any chance I get. Which is why I was so excited when my dear friend and previous guest on the show, Amy Adams, shared that her cousin literally wrote and created a play which addresses bullying head on. Mary Ann Mangini is a performer, writer, teacher, musician, and all around hugely talented Woman. She wrote the music and script for an original, anti-bullying musical called You Are Worth It which is the focus for our episode together. On this guest episode, Mary Ann joins me in a collaborative exploration of the nature of bullying; what it's like to experience bulling, how to understand bullying, and ways to overcome bullying. Mary Ann shares about the path that led her to creating this incredible gift of a musical which addresses the growing bullying epidemic, provides solutions for working to eradicate bullying, takes a serious topic and infuses some humor to lighten the mood, and is performed by the very youth and teens who often endure this abuse. Working with young actors on this show allows for a lot of open discussion regarding the topic.  Mary Ann explains how everyone can identify with bullying because It's everywhere, and not just among our young population. She wrote the show because she was bullied as an adult at her first job. After earning her Bachelor's degree in music education at Grove City College, Mary Ann pursued her passion for teaching choir, music, drama, and private vocal lessons at Shenango High School in New Castle.  She also taught high school choir and elementary music in the Riverview School District in Oakmont. In April 2013, Mary Ann released her debut jazz album, Release Me, comprised of popular jazz standards and several original works.  She currently tours the Pittsburgh area as lead vocalist for the high-energy disco band, Dancing Queen. She has performed at venues all over the Pittsburgh region, including Jergel's Rhythm Grille, multiple Atria's locations, the Rivers Casino, the Meadows Casino, the Rivers Club, Eddie V's, Cioppino, Fresco's, the Oaks Theater, the Parlay Lounge, the New Hazlett Theater, and Kennywood. Dancing Queen has won Pittsbugh City Paper's Best Cover Band in Best of PGH for the past three years in a row! Mary Ann teaches voice/piano lessons at her home studio in Cranberry Township, and also serves as the creator/director of the Fantastix youth show choir. In 2017, Mary Ann wrote the music and script for an original, anti-bullying musical called You Are Worth It. The Fantastix has performed this original musical in local Pittsburgh schools in order to raise awareness for the persisting bullying epidemic, as well as to provide solutions to combat this issue.

Kennywood is open, and it might be in legal trouble. We're digging into the new lawsuit from a disgruntled season passholder. Host Megan Harris explains why we don't need to worry about trillions of cicadas – or their zombies – in our area, but we do need to watch for lanternflies. Plus, producer Sophia Lo shares fun new ways to enjoy a bunch of shows and museums for free all summer long. We always cite our sources: The NFL Draft always features fun videos of students celebrating, and occasionally lamenting, their new employers. Philly's WTTW Podcast shared a particularly funny one this year. Someone's suing Kennywood over the Steel Curtain's closure, and his lawyer argues that people aren't getting their season pass value if this major roller coaster isn't running. Two broods of periodic cicadas are coming above ground this year, but you won't see them in Pittsburgh.  Learn more about a fungus affecting periodical cicada broods all over the nation. Scientists from our region were hopeful some of that fungus could be useful for pharmaceuticals someday! Them reported it like this: “A Sexually Transmitted Fungus Is Making Trillions of Cicadas Hypersexual and Gay” It's almost spotted lanternfly season, but you can squash egg masses before the bugs hatch. RAD is launching a summer staycation program where you can book free tickets to some of Pittsburgh's museums starting May 1. Pittsburgh CLO's summer shows and schedules have been announced. The student-led Gaza solidarity encampment is coming to a close, but organizers still plan to pressure the university to divest from Israel. Learn more about our sponsor, the Pittsburgh Opera.
