Mary Ann Clarke attempted to blackmail her ex-lover, the Duke of York — who led the British army — by threatening to publish his letters. Sounds similar to Wellington but it takes a turn: His political enemies took notice, and they discovered that Mary Ann was selling army commissions (meaning, men who wanted a military rank or promotion would pay off Clarke, who would then demand that the Duke give her clients what they wanted). See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The lockdown for the last 20 months has been described as a "perfect storm" for domestic abuse. There has been a rise in domestic abuse reports over this period of time. Anne Clarke of the Offaly Domestic Violence Support Service talks with Ronan Berry on Taking Care of Business to explain what the current situation is, what services are currently available, and how future plans aim to offer even greater support.

Late last year, news broke that the U.S. divorce rate had hit a 50-year low, with only 14.9 marriages out of every 1,000 ending in divorce. But even with this record decline, divorce was a lot more rare way back on this day 1643. That's when Anne Clarke of the Massachusetts Bay Colony divorced her absent--and adulterous--husband in the very first recorded divorce in the American colonies.

They only appear in St Matthew's gospel, and we're not entirely sure exactly who they were ...... but we do know why they're important! In this first edition of At Your Service for 2021, we explore the coming of the three Kings, or Wise Men, who followed a star, which led them to the child Jesus, with Mary and Joseph. Louise Whitelegg, a Methodist Local Preacher who is also our IOM Christian Aid rep, is well known for her down-to-earth, practical approach to her faith - she joins us to share some thoughts on what the events of that first Christmas have to say to us, today. There's some 'kingly' poetry too, thanks to Anne Clarke, and early in the morning on New Year's Day, a big group - people of all ages, and lots of children too - gathered on Laxey beach to watch the first sunrise of 2021. Pioneer Minister from Douglas - Rev'd Alex Brown - organised it, and explains why he thinks it's important that we should start the year in that way. Listen out for the story of two stones ..... And of course there's music too - and if you'd like to hear YOUR hymn choice in a future programme, send me the details - I'd love to hear from you - email judithley@manxradio.com or write to me at Manx Radio, P.O. On 29 June, the Christian church celebrates two great saints - Peter and Paul - who dedicated their life to serving God and serving God's people. On today's programme, we reflect on these two very different men, and ask the question - what does it mean today - two thousand years later - to dedicate your whole life to the service of God, and of the community? Reverend Marc Wolverson, who is an Anglican priest in Lancashire now, but for nearly 5 years was the Vicar of All Saints Church in Douglas, and Captain Dylan Nieuwoudt, leader of the Salvation Army on the Island, each share their thoughts on a life spent serving God. Captain Dylan shares his leadership with his wife Captain Rachael, and she joins us with a short time of prayer - for us all, whatever our calling. We finish with The Loom of Time - a thought-provoking poem read by Anne Clarke. (This was included in a programme a few weeks ago, but not broadcast, due to a technical problem which cut the programme short 5 minutes from the end - so it's repeated here for those who missed it then!) And as usual there's music - a wonderful uplifting arrangement of a great hymn - Praise to The Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation' sung and played by Gareth Moore, organist and Musical Director at Trinity Methodist Church at Rosemount, Douglas, and the Huddersfield Choral Society sing 'O Jesus I have promised to serve thee to the end' - the choice of Mrs Barbara Simpkins of Ramsey. On AT YOUR SERVICE today we've a bit of nostalgia for Father's Day, then Rev'd Alex Brown reflects on some verses from St Matthew's Gospel that are really appropriate, now that the Island has achieved local elimination of Covid-19, and we can now stop social distancing and move out of lockdown. But Alex's specially-written reflection called "Whispers" asks some tough questions ..... What have we done with all the lessons we learned over the last three months? Are we going back to our old way of life - or can we do so much better? Rev'd Alex has an interesting music choice, too - How Great Is Our God is one of the most popular worship songs ever, but its composer Chris Tomlin recorded a new version in 2012 with the familiar words sung in 8 different languages - listen and see how many you recognise - and be prepared for some surprises, as we celebrate in song the greatness of God, in every corner of the world! For many people, lockdown was a difficult and lonely time, separating them from friends and family, but one 12-year-old girl soon realised that lockdown was, for her, a gift from God. She is Lula Brown, and she tells the moving story of her personal battle with anxiety - which began a long time before Covid-19 was ever mentioned. Music this week includes the popular hymn 'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind' and a prayerful chant by Margaret Rizza - 'Come, Be With Me' And we end with poetry from Anne Clarke - her choice this week is The Loom of Time Your hymn requests are very welcome - please do get in touch and tell me what you'd like to hear - my email address is judithley@manxradio.com

Today's programme is presented by another group drawn from the Island's Christian churches, with Bible readings, prayers, reflections and music to lift us up, whilst we're locked down. We're reflecting on Jesus as the Good Shepherd, with Bible reading and a brand new poem from Christian writer Malcolm Guite, written amidst the strangeness of Easter Day this year, and read for us by Anne Clarke. Judy Cannan is looking at the 'new normal' and wondering if we see stumbling blocks around us - or could they be stepping stones? Louise Whitelegg is preparing for Christian Aid week which starts on 10 May and whilst she acknowledges that it will be very different this year, she's praying that sufficient money will be raised to enable Christian Aid to complete their life-changing work in Burundi - one of the world's poorest countries. The bee keeping project started by Harry Owen will enable people to work themselves out of poverty and have a sustainable future - but another £20K is needed - Louise would appreciate your prayers that this target can somehow be met. There's a Just Giving page with all the details if you feel able to donate - just search for Burundi Bees - and you'll also find the full story on the Christian Aid website (there's a donate button there too!) go to christianaid.org And to strengthen the tie between Burundi and the Isle of Man, Louise has invited one of her friends in Burundi to contribute to this morning's service - Ishimwee Colombe Felienne reads from the Bible and leads a prayer too - she's from Burundi, and is working as a Communications Intern with Christian Aid in that country. Two of today's hymns have been chosen by listeners - Make Me A Channel of Your Peace and Calm me, Lord as you calmed the storm - do let me know if you have a favourite hymn you'd like to hear on At Your Service - email me with details - judithley@manxradio.com - I'd love to hear from you.

AT YOUR SERVICE this week explores the same story in three different ways -the story tells of one of the encounters Jesus has, after he has risen from the dead, with two of his followers. Firstly we hear the story as told in the Gospel of St Luke, then we're invited to imagine that we are 'the unknown disciple' in the story and finally we hear from someone who IS 'the unknown disciple' - but this is no ordinary story, and the ending offers us two challenges that are difficult to ignore. Rev'd Canon Margaret Burrow, the Very Rev'd Nigel Godfrey, Dean of the Cathedral in Peel, and Pioneer Minister from Douglas, Rev'd Alex Brown are the storytellers. Dean Nigel chooses 'Now the Green Blade Riseth' as one of today's hymns, and 'Great is Thy Faithfulness' is the choice of Rev'd Carol and Doug Fox, who keep in touch with their Manx friends by listening on line in the United States, and are really missing being in their home in Peel. Anne Clarke reads the piece of verse/prose written by Kitty O'Meara from Wisconsin 'And the people stayed home' which so resonated with people, that it was shared right around the world within days of being posted by Kitty on Facebook. And we end with a powerful and moving brand new poem by Reverend Stephanie Hunter, assistant curate working in the Church of England in Huddersfield. Rev'd Stephanie has strong Manx connections - her Mum and all her relations on that side of her family are Manx-born, and as part of her preparation for ordination about 6 years ago, Stephanie spent a year as an intern at the Cathedral in Peel. Stephanie's poem speaks to those who mourn the loss of a loved one, those who work on the front line in the fight against the coronavirus, and those who find their faith shaken to its very core, by the suffering they have experienced. Your hymn choices for the programme are always welcome - via email - judithley@manxradio.com

Anne Clarke is a facilitator for Access Consciousness and if you have not had your bars run you are missing out. But first, let's talk about my news. I have decided to test my passion with running, I have entered into the Loch Ness 10K road race. I've never done road racing before, and I only started road running in April. If you want to know more about my running adventure check out the podcast "The spud with legs". I still don't understand why I've entered the race because I don't need to run 10K to prove I can. But it seemed like the thing to do, and I my race number arrived morning. In other news I put a request this week in one of my facebook groups for ladies to step forward for the podcast. It was one of the odd things I discovered when I put out invites for people to come on to the show is that. The gentlemen stepped forward without much of a do, or concern. The ladies are a bit more introspective and have to think about it. Having put out the challenge I have had a fantastic response, as someone pointed out I was not asking the right ladies. I now have interviews booked with some tremendous women starting next week. Speaking of fantastic women Anne Clarke, now I mention this on last week's show that I had got lost in her voice and the story, it ran over an hour. The plan was to cut it down into bite-sized chunks, tried I can't do it; it's not possible. I listened to it through, and I was captivated as before didn't stop the programme. So I will cut in half and publish it in two parts. I know someone my podcast do run to an hour, but the extra 15 minutes is a little long. On to the show, when I first considered the podcast, Anne was at the top of the list of women. I have to admit I was curious and wanted to know the story. I've known her for probably 5 or 6 years our children went to the same school. I was involved as a trustee at the time, and Anne was one of the parents that made a significant contribution in the various conversations that we had around the school and events. She was a mother with young children, and I saw her in that context. Then a little later I saw a photograph taken at an event and the difference in her was unbelievable, something had shifted. Over that last few years, I've seen her on different stages and platforms around the world. She is a facilitator for Access Consciousness, and that journey has revolutionised her life. However, she was avoiding my invitations to speak until I met her in Tesco and convinced her to take part. Her condition was that we have our chat face to face, on my sofa. I hope you enjoy part one of this a conversation as much as I did

This week's guest on the Empowered Women Show works with entrepreneurial women across the globe, she enables them to grow their business by helping them escape the 'white noise' to find clarity in their direction. And she does this all while juggling three children under the age of five! A former 'Jill of all trades', our guest has over 20 years experience as a corporate PA, where she was involved with corporate events management, HR management, and office management. However, self-sabotaging behaviour held her back from her dream for over 6 years, she worked in a job she hated held back only by a fear of failure. But after falling pregnant with her second child only days before returning to work from maternity leave, she took the leap and resigned from her job. At 40 years old, her positive 'you are never too old to learn' mentality was a driving force. ANNE CLARKE is now a very successful Business and Life Coach, and a Virtual Assistant. This 'corporate gal' turned entrepreneur is a strong believer that when you are doing what you love you deliver your best, regardless of your circumstances. In her busy life, she has learnt the importance of 'going with the flow' and not getting stressed over things outside her control.
