"We made something we could dance to." The Chicago juke and footwork pioneer reflects on 40 years of Dance Mania and his longtime collaboration with the late DJ Rashad. Anyone with a passing interest in footwork and juke will know of Traxman. Corky Strong has a long history in the world of Chicago dance music, first releasing on the legendary Dance Mania label—which is now celebrating 40 years—in the mid-'90s. He's since split his productions between ghetto house, juke and footwork, releasing alongside titans of Black American music like the late DJ Deeon and DJ Rashad. Strong went on to become a member of DJ Rashad's renowned Teklife crew, and he was one of the creators of the legendary mixtapes on coloured cassettes that became a prototype for juke and footwork's evolution. In this Exchange, Strong speaks with RA's Kiana Mickles in New York about how he first became introduced to this world through his cousins, with whom he'd listen to funk and slow jams, Parliament Funkadelic, Farley Jackmaster Funk, James Brown and a variety of hip-hop throughout the '80s. The pieces eventually fell into place, he recounts, when he met the "mysterious kid" DJ Rashad in 1997. Together, they helped shape the music scene in Chicago, and the rest, as they say, is history. Over the last few years, Strong has been celebrating footwork's past by putting out a series of albums called Da Mind of Traxman on Planet Mu. He's just released his third volume, and his first since 2014, which was crafted with the help of fellow Planet Mu artist Sinjin Hawke. Strong took on A&R duties to collate the best from hundreds of tracks dating back to 2005. The series is notable in part because it's a catalogue of footwork and its Chicago lineage—juke and house—as well as these genres' soul, funk and rock roots. Adams, he is a musician and producer form West Germany, who started his journey into electronic music a few years ago after trips to Ibiza. Based in House Music with several releases and remixes on different labels and his own radioshow on Ibiza Live Radio, he explored other genres and got more and more into the world of techno. After playing peak time techno sets in the clubs and feeling the energy, he decided to produce genre tracks by himself. The first techno EP „Fury“ and the actual one called „Corrosion“ both entered the release charts on beatport and made it to position 2 in Techno (Raw/Deep/Hypnotic). Run it Red's 100th Episode is here and, to switch things up, my Discoid/House alias Ron Bacardi takes over with a much-requested Dj set recording, this one from DJ Bone's excellent Further party a few weeks back.   In eight years I've chalked up nearly 240hrs of music, dropped about 7000 new tracks and we're still going strong, something I'm immensely proud of. The show has always been about showcasing the best new music I can find, so huge thanks to the artists, labels and promo companies who send me music, I'm aware of how big a privilege it is to get so much great stuff on top of my own digging. Massive thanks to the mighty NTS too, it's wicked to be a regular on such a forward-thinking station and be part of a family that includes so many great DJs and selectors, but the biggest appreciation of all goes to the listeners, those who give me feedback when they see me on the road and especially the ones who go out and support the labels/artists they hear on the show. Imagine growing up near Berlin, getting into dance music, going to Berghain for the first time and getting your mind blown by techno. Then, ten years later, you become a resident DJ at the fabled club. Not many people—any people?—can claim this story, but for Fadi Mohem, what would be so many DJs' dreams became a reality. After getting his 2017 debut 12-inch Reckless in the hands of all the right people in Berlin, Mohem established a bold, bouncy techno sound with releases on Modeselektor's Seilscheibenpfeiler, Ben Klock's Klockworks and FJAAK's SPANDAU20, pretty much the cream of the crop of modern techno. Now, this year, he's becoming one of Berghain's newest residents, alongside other exciting names like Sedef Adasï and Naty Seres (and Lakuti upstairs at Panorama Bar). As heard on his recent collaborative with Ben Klock, Mohem has modern techno down to a science, thanks to a combination of reverence for the old-school and clever rhythmic touches, like the irresistible snare pattern on "Prefix." Emerald is a name that should be familiar to any Rinse FM devotee—she's been DJing on the UK dance music radio giant since 2014, and has just started a new flagship slot called The Dance Show on Friday nights. The Londoner is a consummate radio DJ, blending together genres and tempos with pitch-perfect mixing and an ear for hooks that makes each track stand out. (She calls herself "genre fluid.") She's said so much in the lengthy, excellent interview below, so we can keep this part brief.
