Miles and Charlie have come down with a case of the ‘too British for Star Trek' and are coping with it the only way they know how, by once more becoming Space Scamps and hopping over to Moonbase Alpha for three more episodes of Space 1999! We've an unintentional theme of guest stars here as ‘Force of Life' gives us a young Ian McShane coming down with a bad case of heat vamperism while ‘Alpha Child' gives us evil children, weird cosmic space incest with Julian Glover (he's been in a lot of stuff) and then finally, ‘Missing Link‘ gives us a guest turn by Peter Cushing in a costume choice slightly more dignified than Christopher Lee back in Space Scamps II and Charlie asks us a terrifying question… why have we not watched any season 2 yet… EPISODES MENTIONED: Force of Life (09:14) Alpha Child (28:58) Missing Link (50:53) TALKING POINTS: The Abominable Dr. Phibes, New Classic Doctor Who, The Employees, The House on the Borderland, Sailing, Rhinestone Cowboy, a very young Ian McShane who to Miles' surprise is NOT playing a scumbag, coworkers coming into work while sick, Space 1999's production values ALWAYS impress, Sunshine is a great movie, is this incest? Maybe. Avengers Issue 200 style shennanigans, Julian Glover, the Man the Myth the Legend, Alpha Child does TNG's The Child CORRECTLY, what the hell was TV Show ‘Swat?' also… who is second in command on Moonbase Alpha? Space-Rationalists are the worst. Space 1999 is the wrong show to be doing Logic vs. Emotion, this is why we have a stunt crew, Space 1999 would have made a great season of The Terror, we feel sorry for Moonbase Alpha's catering department

It's time for a big hitter episode on an absolute horror luminary. This month the legend I am covering is Vincent Price. An actor so accomplished that by the time of his passing at the age of 82 in 1993, he had left us with over 100 feature films. Half of these were horror, science fiction and fantasy movies and within those a stack are known today as all time classics. Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 5. A slew of also rans. Plus a very special guest in the shape of Lono from We Belong Dead podcast. So join me over several pints of beer and over 7 hours of running time split over 4 episodes. This is Vincent Price, A Lifetime In Movies. 0.33 - The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) 07.36 - House of Wax (1953) 40.37 - The Last Man on Earth (1964) A YEAR IN HORROR PATREON // WE BELONG DEAD PODCAST

The Asphyx (1972) In this episode, we dive deep into the 1972 British science fiction horror cult classic, The Asphyx (also known as Spirit of the Dead or The Horror of Death). Set in the Victorian era, this unique period chiller follows a wealthy philanthropist and amateur scientist, Sir Hugo Cunningham, who stumbles upon a way to photograph the "Asphyx"—the Ancient Greek spirit of death that appears at the precise moment of a person's demise.A Quick Mea Culpa on Picture QualityBefore we get into the meat of the film, we have to address the elephant in the room: the visuals. Throughout the episode, you'll hear us absolutely tear into the "pan and scan" and the ropy, grainy picture quality of the version we watched.Full disclosure: We've since realized we were watching a particularly bottom-of-the-barrel DVD. It turns out there are actually stunning, high-quality HD versions of The Asphyx available for free on YouTube! From the Todd-AO 35mm widescreen transfers to beautifully restored prints, the real film looks pretty good. If you want to see what Freddie Young actually intended, go search for it—it's easy to find and looks worlds better than the disc we suffered through.Inside the Episode: Behind the Lens of a Horror Oddity. Despite our technical hurdles, The Asphyx is a fascinating piece of British cinema history. We explore the career of director Peter Newbrook, who rose from a messenger boy to the second unit photographer for the legendary mirage shot in Lawrence of Arabia. Key Discussion Points:The Legend Freddie Young: How a three-time Academy Award-winning cinematographer ended up shooting a 70s mad scientist flick. The Ghostbusters Connection: We examine the theory that this film's spirit-trapping tech was the direct blueprint for the 1984 Ghostbusters equipment. The Remake That Never Was: Details on the failed 2011 reboot that was set to star Bond girl Alison Doody. Music: Composer Bill McGuffie (of Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. fame) and his incredible story of overcoming a childhood injury to master the piano. A Star-Studded Cast of British Icons. The acting pedigree in this film is surprisingly high, featuring some of the most recognizable faces in British television and film: Robert Stephens: The star of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. We discuss his marriage to Maggie Smith and his iconic work in The Box of Delights.Robert Powell: From Jesus of Nazareth to fighting rats in Doomwatch, Powell brings a certain intensity to the role of Giles. Jane Lapotaire: A Tony-winner and star of The Crown (as Princess Alice). We also take a detour into her role in One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing. Fiona Walker & Ralph Arliss: Spotting familiar faces from Doctor Who, I, Claudius, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, and the classic series Survivors. Cannabis comic and activist Ngaio Bealum is back on the podcast for our HALLOWEED episode, and he's bringing a pair of horror comedies. First, we've got maybe the ultimate Halloween movie with ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948). This one has all the monsters--Lon Chaney, Jr. as THE WOLF MAN, Bela Lugosi is DRACULA, and Glenn Strange is the FRANKENSTEIN MONSTER. Plus you've got some mad scientist action, and they're all after Lou Costello's brain because he's even dumber than the monster. Thrill to Dracula hurling potted plants at the Wolf Man! There's also a Nor Cal/So Cal schism over Abbott and Costello that was a little unexpected. Find out how that one plays out as Bob and Ngaio tag team the Franklins here. Then, don't call it a comeback as VINCENT PRICE returns to kill a bunch of doctors in inventive and Biblical ways in THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES (1971), a piece of art deco madness from the strange mind of director Robert Fuest (THE DEVIL'S RAIN). Bob's usual smooth intro melted down here as Ngaio accused him of spoiling the movie by basically rehashing the description copy from the back of the Bluray. You'll want to hear the conflict. And FIND OUT HOW YOU can WIN THE DR. PHIBES Bluray(!), and read that spoilery copy for yourself by listening to this episode! And if you email us at oldmoviesforyoungstoners@gmail.com and tell Bob how this episode is a STEALTH VINCENT PRICE DOUBLE FEATURE, you'll jump ahead in line! We will reward the people who actually read all this crap. Shhhh. And the episode kicks off with a usual amount of discussion or SUPERMAN vs. POPEYE + seeing the Tim Burton BATMAN at the Grand Lake in Oakland. Ngaio is old school when it comes to DC Comics canon BTW. Follow Ngaio at Ngaio420 on Instagram and other socials: https://www.instagram.com/ngaio420/ Hosts: Philena Franklin, Bob Calhoun, and Greg Franklin. Cory Sklar is on assignment. We're taking a look at two films by the director Robert Fuest. First up, William Shatner and Tom Skeritt fight satanist Ernest Borgnine in THE DEVIL'S RAIN. Then, Vincent Price kills people who didn't save his wife by way of the plagues of Egypt in THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES.
GGACP's celebration of Pride Month continues with this look back at a 2015 interview with the daughter of horror icon Vincent Price, author and public speaker Victoria Price. In this episode, Victoria talks about her father's run-ins with the Hollywood blacklist, his distaste for slasher films, his lifelong friendships with Christopher Lee and Peter Lorre and his rumored bisexuality. Also, Victoria lauds horror movie fans, deconstructs “The Abominable Dr. Phibes”, and visits the set of “Theater of Blood”! PLUS: The wonder of Emergo! Vincent Price meets Jack Benny! Martin Scorsese praises “House of Wax”! And the return of “The Tingler”! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
