Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast. Travel Adventures, Bike Tech Tips
Some of us are born with it, some of us develop it and some of us are just sideswiped by it - it’s something called wanderlust. Geoff Keys had ambitions to travel the world for a long time. Further inspired by adventure travel books and moto documentaries, he decided to follow his dream to tour the world and naturally the mode of transport was motorcycle. As Geoff shared with us, his “reason for travelling is simply to scratch the itch, cure the wanderlust, see what there is to be seen and meet the people with whom I share the planet”. With a pure attitude, leaving all inhibitions behind, Geoff has faced some challenges and met many people along the way, and even made headlines when he was lost in the Australian outback for two days. In this episode, we speak with Executive Director in Residence for the Outdoor Products degree, Geoff Raynak, and two Outdoor Products students, Daniel Rogers and Will Kramer. Geoff shares more about the development of the newer program. "When you think about a career in Outdoor Products, it runs the entire spectrum of career options. You could be on the marketing side, you could be a designer who picks the specific materials, you could be a developer who helps decide where things get made, you could be in sales, you could be an entrepreneur and need to know about every single step of that process...What I expect and hope the students will graduate with is an understanding of all of those things so that they can then find their passion within outdoor products that they are excited about and that they want to start their career with." Daniel shares his journey from Energy Systems Engineering to now studying Outdoor Products, and Will echoes that story in sharing of exploring three different major tracks and being open to switching programs as there is no shame in changing your mind. As Geoff states, "Find a major that's maybe not exactly right, find another one that maybe is a little bit closer and then land on something that really resonates with you as a person."
This episode of Spoleto Backstage rounds out Geoff Nuttall’s list of top Spoleto Festival chamber performances from the past decade with a 2011 program featuring Franz Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667—better known as the “Trout” Quintet. As Geoff shares with Bradley Fuller in a conversation before the music begins, this sparkling chamber work gets both its nickname and the musical material for its theme-and-variations fourth movement from a catchy lied or art song Schubert wrote two years prior: “Die Forelle” (“The Trout”), op. 32, D. 550. Baritone Tyler Duncan performs this lied just before pianist Pedja Muzijevic joins string players Hsin-Yun Huang, Christopher Costanza, Anthony Manzo, and Geoff himself for the quintet it inspired. The concert opens with Niccolò Paganini’s fiendishly-difficult Moses Fantasy for cello and piano, a work based on an operatic aria by Gioachino Rossini and allegedly shaped by its composer’s prison sentence.
This episode of Spoleto Backstage highlights one of Geoff Nuttall’s all-time favorite programs from the Spoleto Festival USA Chamber Music Series: the eleventh and final concert from the 2018 season. As Geoff discusses with Bradley Fuller before the music begins, the wide-ranging, variety-packed lineup of this program is emblematic of the chamber series as a whole. To start, the men of the Westminster Choir join the regular chamber musicians for a performance of Franz Schubert’s sublime choral setting of Goethe’s “Gesang der Geister über den Wassern.” Cellist Joshua Roman and pianist Gilles Vonsattel then perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s Cello Sonata in C major, Op. 102. Following the late Beethoven work is Antonio Vivaldi’s stormy “Summer” concerto from The Four Seasons . For the final two pieces of the program, tenor Paul Groves takes center stage with a performance of two hit arias: Gaetano Donizetti’s “Una furtiva lagrima” (from L’elisir d’amore ) and Charles Gounod’s “Salut! Demeure
Welcome to episode sixteen of Activist #MMT. Today I talk with third year MMT activist and healthcare advocate, Geoff Ginter (Twitter/@geoff_ginter). Geoff is the person who introduced me to MMT in February of 2018. We traveled to and roomed together at both the 2018 and 19 MMT conferences in New York. Episodes three and four of this podcast were recorded during our car rides to and from the most recent conference. Geoff lives in the eastern-most portion of New Jersey’s third Congressional district, near the Jersey shore. I live, roughly, an hour due west of him, about one half-mile outside the western border of that same district. I’m also about 20 minutes from Philadelphia. In this two-part episode, Geoff talks about his journey to MMT, which was highlighted by his May 2017 confrontation with then Republican Congressman, Tom MacArthur. MacArthur‘s net worth is estimated to be as high as $50 million which he extracted from the sick and dying, as an executive in the for-profit health insurance industry. Absurdly, he is also the author of the amendment that brought the infamous and then-defeated TrumpCare back to life. The new version of the bill contained horrific details such as declaring acne and sexual assault to be pre-existing conditions. Geoff’s fiery 12 minute (and completely improvised) speech was seen by millions, resulting in many invitations for interviews. One of them was a livestream on the Facebook page Real Progressives, hosted by Jon Lancelot. Geoff chose to not wear glasses while talking with Jon and only afterwards saw the many viewer comments urging him to look into something called “MMT,” which he had not heard of at the time. With Jon’s guidance, he dove into the subject, eventually experiencing his lightbulb moment during a video by economist Stephanie Kelton called, “Angry Birds and Deficits.” Geoff also talks about how many popular uprisings have failed because, although it is clear that something is terribly wrong, there is little consensus or understanding of what the problem is. As Geoff says, you can’t escape your prison until you can clearly see the walls surrounding you. Modern Monetary Theory helps define the walls, so it is unsurprising the resistance it receives. Finally, Geoff and I discuss our concerns with current New Jersey third’s Democratic Congressman, Andy Kim. Kim defeated MacArthur by a razors edge in November 2018 and, in my estimation, Geoff’s viral confrontation with his Republican opponent played a significant role in that victory. Now, more than a year through his first two-year term, Kim has certainly performed “better than MacArthur,“ but that is quite the low bar. Kim strongly focused his year and-a-half campaign around progressive issues such as universal healthcare, earning him the endorsement of the prominent progressive organization, Bold Progressives. To this day, however, he still spends more time and energy worrying about the potential consequences of implementing universal healthcare, than about the millions of Americans who are, right now, suffering, dying, and going bankrupt because we don’t have it. As a federal representative, Andy Kim has access to any resource or expert on the planet. If he really wanted his constituents to have universal healthcare, he would have determined these answers and their solutions long ago. Before the music you heard then-high school student Daisy Confoy confronting Representative MacArthur at the same town hall, about an hour before Geoff. The full audio of this interaction, along with that of her classmate Joseph Zetkulic, and Geoff, can be found in a recently released bonus episode of Activist #MMT. As Geoff and Jack cope with their overwhelming feelings of loss, they still manage to carry on to talk about the strange “foreignness” of acting General Col. Rotok, Urko's suspension, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie again, the return of Monster-Bird and Kygoor, facial hair, Shrek, balloon fetishism, the surprising evolution in the show as it approached its final moments, a mythical Season 2, some big Ape News, and so much more. Geoff Lanham | 1 Peter 3:8-12 | Romans 12:14-21 God bless you! We might say this casually - even when someone sneezes - or possibly with greater meaning. Rarely will we seek God's blessing for someone who has hurt us, yet that is what Jesus did even for those who crucified him. As Geoff explains, fighting fire with fire only spreads the flames, but responding to evil with goodness is the Jesus way.Discussion questions can be downloaded here.Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay,' says the Lord.
Geoff Lanham | Exodus 19:3-6 | 1 Peter 2:9-10 | Revelation 5:7-10 What image does the word "priest" bring to mind? As Geoff points out, it's an office that has largely fallen into disrepute, yet it really mattered to the writers of the Bible. We start a new series God's way of blessing the world by looking at the role of every Christian in connecting the world with God.Discussion questions can be downloaded here. Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, ‘This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: “... Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant ... you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”’You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. They sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.’
Geoff Lanham | 1 Peter 4:12-19 | John 15:18-25 Fiery ordeal? Sufferings? Hated by the world? This wasn't mentioned in the sales pitch! Yet, if we truly follow Jesus, along with all the countless blessings will come opposition: anything from suspicion and misunderstanding to imprisonment and execution. As Geoff explains, we need perseverance to live by different values and to accept whatever the consequences might be.Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.[Jesus said,] ‘If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.’
Geoff Wilson is a noted figure in the Australian Finance industry, he’s the founder and chairman of Wilson Asset Management. In the last year Geoff was named an officer in the general division of the Order of Australia for services to the business and finance sector, professional financial bodies and the community as a supporter of charitable foundations. I never grew up knowing anything about finance, the stock market, investment - it just wasn’t around me. It was only later in life that I started to meet people who actually knew what all the little numbers and charts in the stock exchange mean. It was only later still that I started to realise that these were jobs that people had, that they worked their way up to, that they could make careers out of. And Geoff is one of those people. I wanted to talk to him because I was fascinated by not only his career path and how a life in the finance world can build into an incredible career - but also because of how he and I met. Geoff is the founder of a number of managed funds - we will get into the terminology in the chat - but two of the funds particularly, Future Generations and Future Generations Global, are ways for investors to not only see a return but also give back to the community. As Geoff explains - the way fund managers get paid is usually a percentage of the fund and a performance bonus. So Geoff created the Future Generation Investment company and the Future Generation Global Investment Company model as a way for the funds management and finance industry to make a significant and ongoing impact to the community. How it works is that The Future Generation fund managers do not charge management or performance fees, allowing the companies to donate 1% of assets to the supported charities each year. What that does is provide an ongoing source of funding for Australian charities, with a focus on children at risk (Future Generation Investment Company supports 14 charities) and youth mental health (Future Generation Global supports 8 charities including SANE Australia, which is where I met Geoff). Listening to Geoff’s story and how he built a career in an industry that I knew little about was fascinating to me. But then hearing how he was affected by time spent working as a Lifeline counsellor - that was truly the most incredible part of this conversation. He’s clearly a very successful man, he’s worked very hard to get where he is today - and yet he still found time on a weekday morning at 9am to come over to my apartment to talk about his career, his work, and why he does what he does. Born in Sudbury Ontario Canada, the 'Nickel Capital of The World', Geoffrey spent some eight years there prior to moving to Ottawa, the nation's capital. Interestingly Sudbury was where NASA sent the Apollo astronauts to train prior to the initial moon launch as it was the closest surface on the earth which approximated the moon. It was in Ottawa that Geoffrey discovered the game of golf and though he played hockey like most of his friends did, it was golf which became his passion. He procured his CPGA card in 1976 and was a member of the Canadian PGA for some five years. It was while in Florida in the early 80's that he met an aspiring professional for the LPGA tour whom he helped to attain her tour card and caddied for. An interesting experience, he came to the conclusion that age was becoming a consideration and that it was time to establish a career. It was the result of a casual game of golf in Toronto (circa 1982) that Geoffrey was introduced to Jim Kerr, the owner of Shaw Laboratories, a full service lab group. Jim whose daughter went on to swim for the Canadian Olympic Team felt that there was a direct correlation between athletics and sales, and hired Geoff that June. Geoffrey spent some six years with Shaw in both a sales and sales management capacity until once again golf introduced him to the retail/distribution side of the industry. In 1988 he teamed up with Denco Canada a full service distributor with branch operations from coast to coast. Back then they sold alloy, Adaptic self cure composite, film and prophy cups. As Geoff recalls, it was not until 1990 when Kimberly Bergalis was diagnosed with AIDS that they sold gloves to the profession. Ms. Bergalis dentist, Dr David Acer purportedly infected her with the HIV virus and overnight the public demanded that the profession don gloves prior to treatment. Geoff still recalls selling Johnson & Johnson Microtouch gloves for $33.00 a box ($330 a case) and not being able to satisfy the demand. It was in 1990 that Denco literally imploded and what had been a powerhouse became insolvent. As Geoff says, they wrote the book which Healthco later read. He stayed on until the final day at which time he joined forces with Canadian Dental with whom he partnered until September 1992. It was at that time that he procured his Green Card and came south to Winston Salem North Carolina. Geoff partnered with Thompson Dental which was a member of what is now the NDC. They were acquired by Patterson for whom he sold until joining forces with Henry Schein in 2009. The past couple of years, Geoff has been an independent sales consultant in different areas, including oral cancer and obstructive sleep apnea along with some interests outside of dentistry.
This episode is going to add a ton of value to a lot of you out there. Geoff really dive deep with questions that challenged the clarity I have around my business and moving forward. If I'm not able to clearly define and share what my vision is.. for my business… then I will continue to fail. In this episode we dove deep into these specific areas: 1. The most successful people achieve their goals by doing this one thing. 2. If you're struggling to grow, you must identify the GAP and get to a whiteboard. 3. and… Do you know what the point of a goal is? As Geoff and I carried on our conversation… I realized I know why my clarity has gotten a little muddy. I went away from the things I started doing at the beginning of this year. I stopped working the muscle that has been proven to give results. For me and my monkey mind… that shiny object, entrepreneur spirit…. needs to head back to the whiteboard and re-visit my Disney. We hope you enjoyed this episode…every time Geoff and I connect there is a huge value exchange. And our only hope is that you are receiving just as much value as we are. If you thought this episode was great… please leave us a review. It would mean the world to us here at the Mentee. We want to keep adding value to you and the only way we know how to continue that is by hearing from you. With that, we will see you all… next week! For those of you who are ready to surround yourself with the right people, it's time! We are planning our next exclusive Mentee Mastermind experience, version 2.0. HVMN Podcast: Evidence-based Nutrition, Fitness, & Biohacking
If you've been keeping up with the recent emergence of more biohackers and athletes looking to optimize their performance and health by utilizing ketones, you know that the research behind this fuel source has been increasing steadily. As the data grows thanks to the hard work of talented and intelligent researchers, so does the proof of the benefits brought by being in ketosis. One such talented researcher in the space is Dominic D'Agostino, who's primary focus is developing and testing metabolic-based therapies, including ketogenic diets, ketone esters, ketone supplements and metabolic-based drugs. Dominic, in true biohacker form, often performs various n=1 tests on himself with ketone supplements, namely ketone salts and esters. As Geoff digs into Dominic's lifestyle as a ketone researcher and his scientific findings, Dominic drops countless nuggets of knowledge regarding the science and research behind ketones. Not only has ketones showed improvements in cognitive and physical performance, but Dominic is also on the cutting-edge of researching the potential anti-anxiety properties of the fuel source! TNL29 - Christmas is Upon us and we all like to indulge, What about it, treating ourselves isn’t a bad thing, in fact treating ourselves occasionally will allow us to suppress the constant thoughts and feelings for food. As Geoff says in his close out, Its not about Thanks giving to January, its about January to Thanks giving that really make the difference. The New Year for many means a new start. We all constantly strive to be better, and often by the second week of february we have forgotten what those goals are, Loose 10 lbs, give up an addiction, save money, to name but a few. But, if we take small steps, making SMART goals, we might just make it. SMART. Specific, Measurable, Achievable Realistic, and Time related. When it comes to setting goals, don’t be afraid to be writing them down, if when you look at it, your goals are a little unrealistic, or you cant achieve your time that you set, We can take Geoff’s case as an example, his time to compete for the Boston Marathon. 3:15 is his time to beat, and his current PR is around 22 mins outside that. Knocking that time off of a PR is a massive feat, in a short space of time, but what he can do is half the time to 11 minuets and aim for that over the year. Sure it might mean he cannot get to the 2015 Boston marathon but by setting a new PR time of 11 minuets quicker over the next 12 months is Specific, Measurable, Achievable and Time Related. by aiming for 11 and not 22 he is not setting himself up to fail. Liam is especialy good at setting unrealistic goals, The Parish walk proved that. the 85 miles was a massive ask, and with only 19 weeks of training proved to be to much. This time around Liam is aiming for a half marathon, 13.1 miles to be exact. He already runs 3 miles 2-3 times a week, so increasing to 13 won’t be to hard over the next 30 odd weeks. When you are mapping out your goals, take small steps, "Inch by inch, play by play" to quote Al Pacino in the film any given Sunday, No point for aiming for the end zone 90 yards away while your standing on your own ten yard line. You have to work at it. Moving up the field, one play at a time. Keep hitting the targets, gaining 10-15 even 20 yards at a time, and once in a while if you get pushed back, so what. Get up. Brush yourself off, get your head down and go again. You will, and you CAN make the end zone, and scoring that GOAL. Moving on to this weeks show, we indeed talk about our own goals and how we plan on getting through Christmas.Questions? Send us a mail. Liam@uttabull.com or Geoff@uttabull.com
