SynopsisOn today's date in 1908, the Hoffman String Quartet gave a recital at Boston's Potter Hall, opening their program with a Romantic classic, Robert Schumann's String Quartet from 1842, followed by much more modern fare — Debussy's String Quartet written in 1893.And to close their program, the Hoffman Quartet premiered a brand-new contemporary work: a piano quintet by American composer Amy Beach, with the composer at the piano. The Boston Globe's critic noted “the audience was of goodly proportions and very demonstrative in its appreciation of Mrs. Beach's composition,” but (critics being critics), did a little nit-picking, concluding, “The work is thoroughly good, though a little too choppy at times.” The critic from The Boston Evening Transcript had fewer nits to pick, writing: “The quintet begins in the luminous key of F-sharp minor, and throughout Mrs. Beach modulates freely … [she] has sought a modern sonority of utterance … Her rhythms spurred the ear, and her harmonies [have] tang and fancy … In imagination, feeling, and expression, it is distinctly rhapsodic. Mrs. Beach can think musically in truly songful melodies, and such are the themes of her new quintet.”Music Played in Today's ProgramAmy Beach (1867-1944): Piano Quintet; Garrick Ohlsson, piano; Takács Quartet; Hyperion CDA-68295

Counter Classical: Kebra-Seyoun Charles on Redefining Classical Boundaries

In this episode of One Symphony with conductor Devin Patrick Hughes, Devin has an inspiring conversation with bass virtuoso and composer Kebra Seyoun Charles. From their early exposure to African drumming and gospel music to becoming a celebrated classical musician, Charles shares their unique journey and vision for the future of classical music through their "Counter Classical" style. Charles's work embodies a fresh perspective on classical music's future, one that honors tradition while embracing innovation and inclusivity. Their approach shows that classical music's evolution doesn't require abandoning its foundations, but rather expanding its boundaries to embrace diverse influences and experiences. As they put it, "Classical music is so beautiful and so ephemeral and it can't be contained." Charles explores growing up in a musical household and how that led to their disvoery of the film composer, Erich Woflgang Korngold. They also discuss the autobiographical ballet project, Enby, that's based on their experience as a nonbinary person developing in the world.  Kebra-Seyoun Charles is able to give prominence to the dance qualities in all forms of music. Kebra-Seyoun has performed alongside esteemed improvisers and composers such as Jon Batiste, at Carnegie Hall, and Tyshawn Sorey, at the New England Conservatory. Kebra-Seyoun was also featured in “Slugs' Saloon” at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, an interactive installation created by famed jazz musician and composer Jason Moran. Kebra-Seyoun Charles is also a passionate chamber musician. Playing with groups like East Coast Chamber Orchestra, A Far Cry, Palaver Strings, and the Sphinx Virtuosi afford Kebra the opportunity to showcase virtuosity while still playing within an ensemble. A prime example of this is their tenure on the 2019 Emmy award-winning Broadway production “Hadestown”. Thank you for joining us on One Symphony. Thanks to Kebra-Seyoun Charles for sharing their amazing spirit and music-making. You can find  more info at https://www.kscharles.com. This Day in Legal History: WWI Spy ConvictedOn August 16, 1918, Lothar Witzke became the first German spy convicted by the United States during World War I. Tried by a military commission at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Witzke was found guilty of espionage for his role in sabotage activities against the U.S., including his alleged involvement in the Black Tom explosion, a major act of sabotage in 1916. His conviction marked a significant moment in the U.S.'s efforts to counter German espionage during the war. Witzke was sentenced to hang, but his fate took a turn when President Woodrow Wilson commuted his sentence on May 27, 1920. The commutation reflected the complexities of wartime justice and international relations. Later, in 1922, President Calvin Coolidge granted Witzke a pardon, leading to his deportation to Berlin. Witzke's case highlighted the U.S. government's determination to crack down on espionage while also navigating the diplomatic and political nuances of post-war justice.India's legal market is cautiously opening to foreign law firms under new guidance allowing them to practice international law within the country. However, only a few firms have taken steps to establish a presence, as many remain hesitant due to past challenges and uncertainties about the implementation of these new rules. India's rapid economic growth and favorable business environment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi make it an attractive prospect for foreign firms, but the memory of previous failed attempts and local opposition leads many to adopt a wait-and-see approach. Some firms are opting for strategies like the "fly in, fly out" model, running operations from nearby locations like Singapore. Others, like Baker McKenzie and Dentons, are planning to establish offices when permitted, but are currently working through collaborations with local firms. Japan-based TNY Legal and GVA Professional have already entered the Indian market to support their clients' growing needs.Despite the opportunities, significant hurdles remain, including unclear regulations and potential resistance from the local bar. Implementing legislation is still required, and foreign firms face a complex bureaucracy. The possibility of limits on foreign registrations to protect Indian firms adds to the uncertainty, making the path forward for foreign law firms in India fraught with challenges. India Sees Foreign Law Firms Take Baby Steps to Set Up OutpostsTikTok is challenging a U.S. law requiring its parent company, China-based ByteDance, to sell its U.S. assets or face a ban, arguing that the U.S. Department of Justice has misrepresented the app's ties to China. TikTok maintains that its data and content moderation decisions for U.S. users are handled within the U.S. and that the law infringes on its free speech rights. The law, signed by President Biden, aims to end Chinese ownership of TikTok due to national security concerns. The case will be heard by a federal appeals court in September, just before the November presidential election.TikTok disputes US claims on China ties in court appeal | ReutersThe Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld California's vote-by-mail system, ruling that it does not violate the constitutional rights of in-person voters, even if some invalid mailed ballots are occasionally counted. The court rejected the claim that counting these ballots dilutes the votes of in-person voters, emphasizing that such errors do not disproportionately affect any particular group. The decision arose from a lawsuit aiming to decertify California's 2020 election results, which, if successful, could have favored Donald Trump. The court found that the plaintiffs' "vote dilution" theory was legally unfounded, consistent with rulings from other circuits.California Vote-By-Mail Upheld in Rebuke of ‘Vote Dilution' SuitGSK plans to seek the dismissal of a Zantac-related lawsuit in Florida, where plaintiffs allege the heartburn drug caused prostate cancer. This follows a recent Florida court ruling in GSK's favor, which excluded expert testimony linking ranitidine, Zantac's active ingredient, to prostate cancer. The ruling aligns with a 2022 federal court decision that dismissed similar cancer-related claims. However, a Delaware court ruling in June allowed over 70,000 lawsuits to proceed, permitting expert testimony that Zantac causes cancer. GSK is appealing the Delaware decision, as the majority of Zantac cases are concentrated there. Concerns over ranitidine's potential to degrade into the carcinogen NDMA led to the FDA pulling Zantac from the market five years ago.GSK to seek dismissal of Florida case against heartburn drug Zantac | ReutersBayer achieved a legal victory as a U.S. appeals court ruled that federal law shields the company from liability in a lawsuit claiming its Roundup weed killer causes cancer. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia decided that federal regulations, which require uniform pesticide labeling, preempted Pennsylvania state law from mandating a cancer warning on Roundup. This ruling came in response to a lawsuit by David Schaffner, a landscaper diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, who argued that Bayer's Monsanto unit failed to warn consumers about the cancer risk. The decision could lead to a U.S. Supreme Court review due to conflicting rulings from other federal appeals courts, potentially impacting Bayer's broader litigation risk. Bayer, which has settled much of the Roundup litigation for $10.9 billion but still faces tens of thousands of claims, welcomed the ruling, asserting that Roundup and its active ingredient glyphosate are safe.Bayer wins victory in US legal battle against Roundup cancer claims | ReutersThis week's closing theme is by Franz Schubert. This week's closing theme brings us to the world of Franz Schubert, a composer whose music bridges the Classical and Romantic eras with remarkable emotional depth and lyrical beauty. Schubert, born in Vienna in 1797, was a prolific composer despite his tragically short life, leaving behind a vast body of work that continues to resonate with audiences today. Among his numerous compositions, his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, known as the "Trout Quintet," and his symphonies are often celebrated, but today we focus on one of his masterpieces in chamber music: his Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 15.The first movement, "Allegro con fuoco ma non troppo," showcases Schubert's unique ability to blend intensity with elegance. The title, which translates to "fast, with fire but not too much," perfectly encapsulates the movement's spirit. It opens with a passionate and fiery theme that immediately captures the listener's attention, setting the stage for a dynamic interplay between the piano and strings. As the movement progresses, Schubert masterfully balances this intensity with moments of lyrical beauty, creating a musical narrative that is both dramatic and profoundly moving. This piece exemplifies Schubert's gift for melody and his deep understanding of the human experience, qualities that have endeared his music to generations of listeners. As you listen to the "Allegro con fuoco ma non troppo," let yourself be carried by its sweeping phrases and the emotional journey it offers—a true testament to Schubert's genius.Without further ado, the first movement of Franz Schubert's Fantasie in C major, Op. 15, popularly known as the Wanderer Fantasy. Enjoy.   This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

Kotuku Quintet Simon Ansell (violin), John Seager (violin), Judith Gust (viola), Sally-Anne Brown (cello), Louise Webster (piano). The Kotuku Quintet returns with the Piano quintet in F minor, op. 34 by Johannes Brahms. Described as his greatest piece of chamber music it is probably the most frequently performed of his chamber works. Brahms was a demanding self-critic, and the quintet went through several iterations, beginning life as a string quintet, then transcribed into a sonata for two pianos before ending as a work for piano and string quartet. Here, the dual sides of his musical nature – dark, turbulent romanticism and rigorous classicism – were in their most fruitful conflict and balance, the music covering a wide spectrum of moods: majesty, serenity, tension, foreboding, anger and joy. Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34 Johannes Brahms 1. Allegro non troppo 2. Andante, un poco adagio 3. Scherzo: Allegro 4. Finale: Poco sostenuto – Allegro non troppo – Presto, non troppo

Johanna Müller-Hermann once held a significant place as a composer and teacher in Vienna, yet has been largely forgotten over the decades since her death in 1941. Radio 3 has been working to unearth her music and story through its Forgotten Women Composers project, in collaboration with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Dr Carola Darwin. This week, Dr Darwin and Professor Robert Evans join Donald Macleod to explore this fascinating composer and her times. Their series includes many specially recorded works by Müller-Hermann that have sat neglected in dusty archives for decades. Müller-Hermann was greatly celebrated in her own lifetime and moved in eminent musical circles. She studied with Zemlinsky, befriended Alma Mahler, and also corresponded with Arnold Schoenberg. She went on to teach at Austria's New Vienna Conservatory where students travelled from as far away as America and the UK to study with her. She became a pivotal figure in Vienna's cultural scene and her music was regularly performed and published during her lifetime. From the Stage to the Executive Suite: How James Roe's Career as an Oboist Prepared Him to Lead the Orchestra of St. Luke's

After more than two decades as one of New York City's busiest freelance oboists, James Roe decided to pivot his career. He packed up his oboe case, reed knife, and metronome to take on leadership positions at two of the ensembles he had regularly performed with. First he spent two years as president and CEO of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, before moving into his current role as president and executive director of the Orchestra of St. Luke's, where he's been since 2015. How did 25 years of performing in symphony orchestras prepare him to lead one himself? For Roe, his seat in the oboe section gave him a strategic vantage point — one that allowed him to see thousands of concerts play out on the faces of audience members in real time. "You could see when something was hitting, that look in someone's eye that meant the music was meaningful to them," Roe says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "I've taken that into my leadership role because it shows that, as musicians and musical organizations, our mission is not fulfilled on stage — that's only the beginning. The mission is fulfilled in the hearts, minds, ears, and spirits of people in the audience." At the helm of the Orchestra of St. Luke's, Roe oversees more than 70 concerts per season in 20 venues across New York City, as well as a host of education and community programs that help make classical music more accessible for every New Yorker. And through it all, Roe's guiding principle is to ensure "the audience is the focus of everything we do." In this episode, we talk more about the Orchestra of St. Luke's current season — including the Carnegie Hall premiere of Florence Price's Piano Quintet with Marc-André Hamelin and the third year of the ensemble's DeGaetano Composition Institute, where three emerging composers work with composer-mentor Anna Clyne on new pieces to be premiered by OSL. Plus, Roe shares how reading during his daily commute supports his well-being, the inspiration he gets from the "wonderful crackle of anticipation" before a concert begins, and his favorite Manhattan restaurant when he's craving Basque cuisine. — Classical Post® is a leading podcast based in New York. Donald Macleod explores how Cesar Franck, who was, known for being retiring and unassuming, became a leading figure of French musical life. It seems as if Franck's diffident character positively hindered his advancement. He wasn't interested in moving in glamorous social circles, and lived, according to one visitor who called on him the year before he died, "like a monk". This natural reticence may be why the composer of popular works such as the Violin Sonata, the Piano Quintet, a ground-breaking String Quartet and the glorious Symphony in D found that all too often his critics were quick to find fault and were slow to recognise his worth. He had some disappointments to bear, in an age when opera was thriving, none of his four operas saw the light of day in his lifetime. Recognition for his two major choral works, La Rédemption and Les Béatitudes was to come after his death in 1890 at the age of 67. Franck did enjoy some support. Early on Liszt recognised his talent and did his best to help him get his work performed, and later on a band of his pupils, among them the composer Vincent d'Indy did their best to promote their beloved teacher's music. To mark the 200th anniversary of Franck's birth, Donald Macleod spends the week delving a bit deeper into this enigmatic and complex character from his early compositions which pay homage to Liszt and the pianistic tradition of Hummel, to the wonderfully vivid pictorial canvas of Le Chasseur Maudit. Joined by members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for three of the works, and by the entire orchestra plus the City of London Choir and conductor Hilary Davan Wetton for the Fantasia, this album fills in some major gaps in the VW recorded catalogue. James Jolly caught up with the pianist to talk through the album's four works.

Catalyst Quartet — Uncovered, Vol. 2: Florence B. Price (Azica) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Catalyst Quartet by “She just wanted a chance, and she never really got it,” violist Paul Laraia said about composer Florence Price. “It's so fulfilling that we were able to release all of this chamber music. Four of these works have never been recorded.”   Last year, his group, the Catalyst Quartet, launched its first album in a series of recordings commemorating historically important Black composers. The group's latest CD, Uncovered, Vol. 2: Florence B. Price, is the second recording in that series. Why is the title “Uncovered” significant? “Back in 2018, when we were formulating this project, we thought about that title. We felt that it best described the reality in which these composers' music never went away. We needed to focus attention back onto them. “In the case of some of these works, like the works of Florence Price, there was a little bit of detective work. We had to go to the actual library in Arkansas and collect manuscripts in order to make this recording, because the publishing companies that own the rights just aren't pumping out the music fast enough for it to be heard.” Can you tell me about the featured guest, Michelle Cann? “She's just incredible. She is a consummate chamber musician and has all of the incredible facilities and musical intellect to solo. She also separately was taking up her own mission involving the music of Florence Price. “Having her perspective was a really great thing for us, even for all four of us when we play the other pieces that didn't have piano. For instance, one rehearsal we were working on the ‘Juba' movement from the long Piano Quintet in A minor. We were asking Michelle what her take was on swinging some of the rhythms. “To the nonexpert, it can sound like ragtime, but Michelle told us that we needed to listen to the Robert Nathaniel Dett version to get the idea of what was in Price's ears when she was writing those rhythms.” Can you talk about what we hear in 5 Folk Songs in Counterpoint? “There's an emotional and conversational aspect to every one of the entrances and voices that take us with a through line. In the case of the five folk songs, I think there's a through line that spans the entire work. We feel this journey going all the way through. The third movement is a slow chorale that's really gorgeous, and I think it serves as an emotional center point. “The goal is not for our recording to be the only definitive set. The music is so dense that it can be interpreted so many ways. It deserves a collective effort in order to move us closer to having better and stronger interpretations of her music and for her music to be more widely available and known.” To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. Olga Scheps was born in Moscow in 1986, the daughter of two pianists, and discovered the instrument for herself at the age of four. She began studying the piano more intensively after her family moved to Germany in 1992. At an early age she had already developed her own unique style of keyboard playing, which combines intense emotiveness and powerful expressivity with extraordinary pianistic technique. Among those who discovered these talents was Alfred Brendel, who has encouraged the young pianist. Schubert Piano Quintet in A major 'The Trout', D. 667Franz Schubert wrote his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 677, popularly known as The Trout, in 1819, when he was only 22 years old. Like a good fraction of his works, however, it was published after his death, in 1829. Schubert didn't employ the traditional quintet lineup (piano + string quartet), opting instead for replacing one violin with a double bass. The composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel had rearranged his own Septet for the same instrumentation, and the Trout was actually written for a group of musicians coming together to play Hummel's work. The nickname of the piece stems from the fourth movement, which is a set of variations on a lied by Schubert himself, named Die Forelle (the trout). Apparently the patron who commissioned the piece suggested that Schubert includ said set of variations.

Synopsis Two famous pieces of chamber music had their premieres on today's date, both at private readings prior to their first public performances. On today's date in 1842, the German Romantic composer Robert Schumann arranged for a trial reading of his new Piano Quintet in E-flat at the Leipzig home of some of his friends. Schumann's wife, Clara, was supposed to be the pianist on that occasion, but she took ill, and Schumann's friend and fellow-composer Felix Mendelssohn stepped in at the last moment for the informal performance, reading the work at sight. After this preliminary reading, Mendelssohn praised the work, but offered some friendly suggestions concerning part of the trio section in the new work's Scherzo movement, which prompted Schumann to write a livelier replacement movement for the work's first public performance. About 100 years later, on today's date in 1949, a cello sonata by the Soviet composer Sergei Prokofiev received a similar private performance in Moscow, for an invited audience at the House of the Union of Composers. Two of the leading Soviet performers of the day, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and pianist Sviatoslav Richter, gave the work its first performance. The following spring, it was again Rostropovich and Richter who gave the Sonata its public debut at the Moscow Conservatory. Synopsis At New York City's Town Hall on today's date in 1968, the New England Festival Quartet premiered a new chamber work by the American composer George Walker. Walker's String Quartet No. 2 was sandwiched on the program between the String Quartet, Op 95, by Beethoven, and Robert Schumann's Piano Quintet, Op. 44, with George Walker performing the piano part in the Schumann – not surprisingly, since in addition to studying composition at the Curtis Institute, Walker had studied piano there as well, with Rudolf Serkin, no less.  “What was gratifying,” wrote The New York Times music critic the following day, “was the fact that the Walker Quartet held up very well between two such strong works.”28 years later, in 1996, Walker would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music – the first African-American composer to do so. But then, that was only one of George Walker's many remarkable “firsts.” He was also the first black graduate of the Curtis Institute in 1945, the first black musician to play New York's Town Hall that same year, the first black recipient of a doctorate from the Eastman School in 1955, and the first black tenured faculty member at Smith College in 1961. Ep. 42(a) - It is late November 1862. We find Johannes Brahms in Vienna making a great success of himself for once but reeling from a devastating blow given him by the musical establishment of Hamburg. He will try to pick himself up and carry on with his work, compartmentalizing the tenderness he felt for one place from the bitterness for the other so that he might do so. And then further troubles to deal with: family strife and division that will make his life more difficult than ever; a loss that will wrench his heart and cause him the greatest pain, one for which tears aplenty would not be an adequate response but rather, music; tones and song in memoriam of a cherished loved one on a grand scale. --------------- Try MuseScore 3.6! a cura di Massimiliano SamsaLeós Janàček (1854 - 1928) - Sinfonietta, VI/18Leós Janàček (1854 - 1928) - Sinfonietta, VI/18Fanfara: Allegretto. Allegro maestosoIl castello: Andante.

As an 18-month-old, young Andrew sat unmoving while his aunt's student played "Rhapsody in Blue" during a masterclass. Just a few years later at the ripe age of 4, Andrew gave his full attention to a family rehearsal of Schumann's Piano Quintet in E-Flat Major. Starting at age 6, Andrew began learning the piano from his grandma. From family reunions, to living rooms, to funerals, music is an essential piece that not only makes up a part of Andrew, but the entire family. Most of Andrew's years developing his career as a musician are in front of him; yet, his beginning years are still full of achievement. Through his childhood and teenage years, Andrew developed a love for the piano, and Andrew is currently studying with Sue Miller at the College of Southern Idaho and will graduate in May 2021. In October of 2018, he performed with the Magic Valley Symphony. At the beginning of his college years, he was a part of many ensembles at the College of Southern Idaho including, CSI Honors Chamber Quintet and Magic Valley Chorale. During the 2020 pandemic and shutdown, Andrew and cousin Michael produced an online senior recital. Andrew also competed, and won, in the 2020 international at-home-edition of #PlaywithRay. Recently, Andrew co-founded "Musician's Toolbox" with his cousin, Angela Ezeonyeka, whose goal is to equip musicians with the tools to achieve a career in music.     Join the Mind Over Finger Tribe for access to my weekly live videos and to exchange with a community of like-minded musicians!   Visit www.mindoverfinger.com and sign up for my newsletter to get your free guide to an exceptionally productive practice using the metronome!  This guide is the perfect entry point to help you bring more mindfulness and efficiency into your practice and it's filled with tips and tricks on how to use that wonderful tool to take your practicing and your playing to new heights!   If you enjoyed the show, please leave a review on iTunes!  I truly appreciate your support!     THANK YOU: Most sincere thank you to composer Jim Stephenson who graciously provided the show's musical theme!  Concerto #1 for Trumpet and Chamber Orchestra – Movement 2: Allegro con Brio, performed by Jeffrey Work, trumpet, and the Lake Forest Symphony, conducted by Jim Stephenson. This episode of Spoleto Backstage rounds out Geoff Nuttall’s list of top Spoleto Festival chamber performances from the past decade with a 2011 program featuring Franz Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667—better known as the “Trout” Quintet. As Geoff shares with Bradley Fuller in a conversation before the music begins, this sparkling chamber work gets both its nickname and the musical material for its theme-and-variations fourth movement from a catchy lied or art song Schubert wrote two years prior: “Die Forelle” (“The Trout”), op. 32, D. 550. Baritone Tyler Duncan performs this lied just before pianist Pedja Muzijevic joins string players Hsin-Yun Huang, Christopher Costanza, Anthony Manzo, and Geoff himself for the quintet it inspired. The concert opens with Niccolò Paganini’s fiendishly-difficult Moses Fantasy for cello and piano, a work based on an operatic aria by Gioachino Rossini and allegedly shaped by its composer’s prison sentence.

Salomon) before concluding with Amy Beach’s Piano Quintet in F-sharp minor, Op. 67. Geoff Nuttall and Bradley Fuller talk about the selections and the backgrounds of those who wrote them ahead of the music itself. Following the concert, Bradley speaks with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo about his recent engagements, from performing in the lead role of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2019-20 production of Philip Glass’s opera Akhnaten to keeping busy with a variety of projects which don’t involve performing before a live, in-person audience. The Kotuku Quintet returned to the stage this year with a programme that featured two little-known works for piano quintet from the Romantic era. Frank Bridge’s Quintet in D minor, and Enrique Granados’ Quintet in G minor. The English composer Frank Bridge (1879-1941) was widely respected as a teacher, composer, violist and conductor. His Quintet has been described as ‘a high-point of post-romantic English music’. Today it is hardly known but this fresh, enjoyable, moving work is well deserving of greater popularity. Spanish composer Enrique Granados (1867-1916), dubbed by some as the ‘Spanish Grieg’, wrote his Piano Quintet in G minor fairly early in his career and is one of only a handful of chamber works that he wrote. His distinctly Spanish style of classical music can be heard in the second movement, Allegretto, with the suggested strumming of a guitar, accompanying a melancholy song beautifully evocative of a lazy afternoon in the sun.

Donald Macleod explores the music of Johannes Brahms through his close relationships. Brahms was a deeply private man and very guarded about his life, his friends and his feelings. Across this week, Donald goes “Behind Closed Doors” with Brahms to discover what really made him tick. He finds friends, mentors and lovers along the way who together help solve the enigma of the composer. We’ll hear about Brahms’s doomed early romance with a young singer, Agathe von Siebold, plus his lifelong friendships with Robert, and particularly Clara Schumann - probably the person he was closest to in his life. Donald explores the music written for some of the women he knew intimately, and why he sought solitude and how it came to influence his music. Throughout his life, there was a great expectation placed on Brahms’s shoulders. We end by looking at how that shaped his character and music. Donald Macleod explores the strange, brilliant and occasionally nightmarish world of the Soviet composer Alfred Schnittke. The music of Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998) is like being lost in a hall of mirrors. Staring back at you is the whole of music history - from Bach to modern pop via tangos, Soviet work songs, Gregorian chant and Viennese waltzes - refracted and distorted, and woven together to create a uniquely personal style. Thrilling, grotesque, occasionally nightmarish - Schnittke creates a world where everything has a hidden meaning. Beethoven's Fifth suddenly springs terrifyingly out of the darkness in the midst of an otherwise chaotic symphony. Or a cheap Russian pop song appears inexplicably amidst a Baroque chorale. Schnittke's world of suppressed meanings perfectly captured life under the cosh of Soviet Communism. All this week, Donald Macleod unpicks the strands of a musician often seen as the heir to Shostakovich - and perhaps the last truly great composer of the 20th century. Donald begins by exploring the connections - musical, psychological and spiritual - between Alfred Schnittke and the great titan of Soviet music, Dmitri Shostakovich. He then unravels the term "polystylism", which Schnittke himself coined to describe his fusing of wildly eclectic styles - from Bach to pop to hypermodernism to Tchaikovsky. We hear about Schnittke’s intense fame in the 1970s, and how his turn to a deeply devout musical style shocked the avant-garde and won him a whole new spectrum of admirers. Donald takes us through Schnittke’s most rollicking and significant year – 1985 – which saw the creation of five acknowledged masterpieces and the first of several crippling strokes. Seemingly, Schnittke’s mortality drove him to create ever more shattering music in his final years - to compose to the very bitter end, in the face of almost unimaginable physical challenges. Elgar composed little chamber music, which makes his "Piano Quintet" a rare gem. The piece, composed at the very end of Elgar's career, features both an unusual combination of instruments and a wide range of sharply-contrasting moods. The result is a sort of elegant tension that stands apart from other works by this normally reserved composer. Series: "La Jolla Music Society: SummerFest" [Arts and Music] [Show ID: 33143]

Webern: Two Early Pieces for Cello and Piano Brahms: Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34Today’s podcast pairs two composers who seem rather different: Anton Webern and Johannes Brahms. Webern’s Two Early Pieces was written in 1899, when the composer was just 15 years old, and is believed to be his very first composition. But the pair of slow movements sound not at all like Webern’s sparsely orchestrated, mostly atonal later works. Brahms had a bit more experience under his belt when he wrote his Piano Quintet in F minor, but it’s still considered a relatively early work. Clara Schumann consulted with Brahms on the many drafts of this piece, which began its life first as a string quartet and then as a two-piano sonata. The result still preserves a sort of satisfying youthful impetuousness, with passionate themes and bold harmonic transitions, if not as much of the formal structure and counterpoint that would characterize Brahms’s later work.

Vivaldi: Flute Concerto, Op. 10, No. 1Dvořák: Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81The first piece on today’s program falls into the category of “program music,” meaning that the notes follow a set “program” or story. And this music delivers: full of vigorous, rushing passages and endless motion, conjuring a storm-tossed ocean. Dvorak’s piano quintet, on the other hand, evokes many emotions without giving name to any of them. Actually his second quintet—he was reputedly dissatisfied with his first—the piece has won a place among the most-loved Romantic-era quintets, and it’s easy to hear why. Warm, lush melodies, colorful Eastern European elements and delicious rhythms—two against three, three against four—make it a great piece to sink your teeth into, even without a storyline.
