Fogging is something most motorcycle riders just put up with — cracking the visor, wiping it, trying to manage it on the fly. But it's more than an annoyance; it's a visibility problem, and visibility is safety. What many motorcycle riders don't realize is that there are real solutions, not myths or quick roadside fixes, but tools and technologies that actually work when you plan ahead. In this episode, we look at why fogging happens, why helmets struggle with it, and what you can do to prevent it. You'll hear from Jason Eite of VISIN about a heated visor system based on aerospace technology, and from Clinton Smout about the practical approaches riders use every day. If you ride in weather — and eventually we all do — this is one topic that can make your ride safer and far less stressful.
Why You Can't Buy Switzerland's Exceptional Wines Abroad? Why does Switzerland grow so many grape varieties, and which ones are the key players that define the country's wine regions? What makes high-altitude wine regions uniquely capable of producing wines that balance great concentration without being too heavy? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Simon Hardy, author of The Smart Traveller's Wine Guide to Switzerland. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks. Giveaway Two of you are going to win a copy of Simon Hardy's terrific new book, The Smart Traveller's Wine Guide to Switzerland. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck! Highlights How did a teenage exchange trip to a small Burgundy wine family spark Simon's lifelong fascination with wine? What did he discover about everyday French wine culture while living with a Burgundian family? How did a simple holiday job in London unexpectedly expand Simon's exposure to the world of wine? What impact did nearly two decades in Switzerland have on Simon's understanding of vineyards, terroir, and regional identity? How did a 30-page free e-book on Swiss wine evolve into a major publishing project? What makes The Smart Traveller's Wine Guide to Switzerland different? Why is Switzerland's wine industry so small and so little Swiss wine found abroad? How do Switzerland's six wine regions differ in grapes, climate, language, and vineyard culture? Why does the country grow more Pinot Noir than Chile, yet remain almost invisible in global wine conversations? What makes Chasselas the quiet backbone of Swiss white wine? How do classic Swiss foods showcase the subtlety of Chasselas? What does extreme altitude viticulture reveal about the character of Switzerland's mountain wines? Key Takeaways Why is Swiss wine such a rarity worldwide even though it's highly regarded? As Simon explains, Switzerland… is a small country, but when it comes to the wine sector, virtually everything is relatively small-scale. So in terms of producers of in excess of a million bottles, there are very few of them. The majority are small family-run businesses producing somewhere between 50 to 70,000 bottles a year. It's very rare that a single producer will have a single grape planted and be a specialist and expert in that grape. they would have at least 6 to 10 grape varieties planted, if not even more, and be very proud of the fact that they have this diversity in their vineyards. Each wine is a relatively small quantity and most of it stays in the country. It's less than 2% that gets exported. Why does Switzerland grow so many grape varieties, and which ones are the key players that define the country's wine regions? So other than Chasselas, there's Pinot Noir, which is actually the most planted grape in Switzerland. There's more Pinot Noir produced in Switzerland than in Chile. Gamay, and Merlot. Those are the big four in about two-thirds of the vineyards. you've got an incredibly long list of those 253. lots of very small plantings of… largely insignificant varieties, often experimental. The others I went for were those where they play a significant role within a given region. What makes high-altitude wine regions uniquely capable of producing wines that balance great concentration without being too heavy? I didn't do a word count in the book, but I think the terminology 'alpine freshness' probably gets repeated a few times. This diurnal variation is absolutely critical. You get more than adequate sunlight and sun hours during the day in summer for full ripening, not an issue. But you get these plunging temperatures at night, which helps to maintain the acidity levels. So you get the perfect combination of fresh acidity and phenomenal ripeness. Put the two together, that is probably if there's any calling card. And it's not just Swiss wine. It's the same story in Valtellina, in Aosta Valley in Italy, in Alto Adige, in Savoie. The effect of being in these mountainous areas, where you can plant at altitude but where you have this big drop off in temperature at nighttime. About Simon Hardy Simon Hardy brings a rare blend of multinational brand marketing and entrepreneurial flair in the world of wine. Simon champions Swiss wine in the UK, organising Swiss Wine Week London for Swiss Wine Promotion. He is also the co-founder of Alpina Vina, a cross-border guide to Alpine wine regions, including documentary films he writes and presents. Simon also wrote The Smart Traveller's Wine Guide to Switzerland, which has just been published by the Académie du Vin Library with Club Oenologique. He is also a Regional Ambassador for Switzerland at The Old Vine Conference and a judge for the International Wine Challenge since 2018. To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/366.

On this episode of DEEP TROUBLE… two motorcyclists head to mid-Wales for a weekend of trail riding on the historic Strata Florida. It's November, it's wet, and Strata Florida is known for its water crossings. The plan is simple — get out, ride the lanes, and finally tick this legendary trail off the list. But as you'll hear, conditions in the Welsh hills can change fast… and what starts as a straightforward ride quickly becomes something far more serious.
Happy Thanksgiving! To celebrate, we bring you an episode that features exotic cuisine. The Travellers barely escape Menorb ahead of the Imperial battlecruiser Luuru. While in jumpspace, they hack their transponder and officially become the crew of Le Poète Armé, or The Armed Poet. In the vast asteroid belt of Louzy, they tie up at a ramshackle mining station called Jenner's Rest.

In 2022, long-distance riders Wendy Crockett and Ian McPhee set out on a world-record attempt to visit all 58 state capitols in Australia and the U.S.—in alphabetical order. But their carefully planned motorcycle trip quickly turned into chaos: mechanical failures, illness, animal strikes, wild weather, even hospitalizations. Despite everything, they kept pushing, driven by grit, humour, and sheer determination to finish what they started. But what they didn't expect was what happened when they finally hit a point where they couldn't push any farther—when they were genuinely stuck. In sharing their situation, they discovered something surprising, something they hadn't planned for at all… and it changed the course of their journey in ways they never saw coming.

Instructor Clinton Smout shares hard-earned methods for plugging tubeless tires, patching or replacing inner tubes, breaking and seating beads without a shop, quick leak-finding, bent-rim workarounds, and true limp-home repairs. We compare compressor vs CO₂, talk what to pack (plugs, patches, tubes, irons, lube), and walk through the steps that get you rolling again when you're far from help. If you've searched “how to fix a flat motorcycle tire,” “tubeless plug on the trail,” or “adventure bike tire repair,” this episode gives you the real-world techniques that work in dirt, gravel, and backroads.

Some riders are planners, while others seem to thrive amid chaos. Israel Gillette fits into that second group. He grew up in Tennessee, working in his father's cabinet shop, and somehow that evolved into a life that has taken him between Romania, racing, carpentry, and motorcycle riding across continents. When we featured him on the show in 2023, he'd already experienced his share of close calls — time in jail, a bond set at thirty thousand dollars, and a border crossing in South America that ended with gunfire. Yet he still said it was the best thing he'd ever done with his life. Adventure, stubbornness, and perhaps a bit of trouble have shaped both his riding and his way of life.

What started as a nine-day motorcycle trip through Bosnia, Croatia and Slovenia took a sudden and serious turn. It's a story about good intentions, missed signs, and the importance of recognizing when it's time to stop.

When the life she'd planned took an unexpected turn, Kathleen Perry had to find her footing again. The quiet retirement she and her husband had imagined was gone when he passed away — so she reached back to something she'd set aside long ago: a dream to wander. She set her sights on three places — Prudhoe Bay, Ushuaia, and Nordkapp — three dots on the map. And to connect those dots, she would ride a motorcycle.

Travel puts us all in liminal spaces. But despite many practitioners' affinity for spaces betwixt and between, these areas have many practical and magickal dilemmas. A Traveler's Guide to Making Magic provides templates and examples for practicing in a broad range of locations and circumstances. Lisa McSherry provides an experienced and insightful guide for modern practitioners seeking to incorporate a little bit of magick into their own journeys. Near the end of a month-long motorcycle ride through Spain, Mark and Lisa Schubert set out for what should've been an easy final day through the Pyrenees. But as they climbed higher, a mild forecast unravelled into chaos — winds strong enough to stop their motorcycle mid-corner, trees down, and power lines snapping. What follows isn't a story about recklessness or bravado, but about how easily ordinary choices and a little fixation can lead riders into real danger. It's about the thin line between pressing on and pulling back — and the single moment that changed everything.
About this EpisodeThis episode is a little different from the usual Think Like a Game Designer conversation. Instead of a freeform discussion, I came prepared with a curated list of questions to guide the conversation, giving us a structured look into Jordan's creative process, his philosophies on innovation, and the lessons he's learned over decades of building worlds. The result is a fast-paced, insight-packed episode that feels like sitting in on a masterclass in game design.About Jordan WeismanJordan Weisman is a legendary figure in interactive entertainment, whose career spans tabletop games, video games, theme parks, and beyond. As the creator of Battletech, Shadowrun, and Crimson Skies, and the founder of iconic companies like FASA and WizKids, Jordan has shaped generations of players and creators alike. His work is defined by boundless curiosity, fearless experimentation, and a lifelong commitment to collaborative storytelling. In this episode, Jordan and I explore what it means to think small, fail boldly, and keep learning no matter how much success you've had. We discuss how curiosity drives innovation, why emotional courage is more important than financial risk, and how respect—for yourself, your team, and your audience—is at the heart of great creative work. Whether you're just starting your design journey or looking to rekindle your passion after decades in the industry, Jordan's insights offer a masterclass in staying creative for life.Think Like A Game Designer is a reader-supported publication. (00:01:33)* During the pandemic, he rediscovered model building and diorama crafting, a childhood hobby that brings him therapeutic joy.* He enjoys it because it's tangible, visual storytelling where you can actually see progress, a much different process than game design, which often feels abstract or slow. What do you love about that kind of model building and creating? (00:04:05)* It aligns with Jordan's love of world-building and storytelling when creating small, detailed scenes that tell a story visually.* It's satisfying because each session produces visible progress, reinforcing creativity and immersion. What is advice that you would give to someone that's just starting out in your industry? (00:04:06)* Think small. Beginners often aim for massive projects like the ones they admire.* Start with something you can finish using your own limited resources.* Completion and execution teach more than ideas ever will.* Focus on learning through doing, not imagining. Now let's flip to the other side of the equation: what do you see as an important lesson that industry veterans need to learn? Or put another way, what advice do you think your older self might give to you? (00:06:30) * Avoid hubris. Experience can blind you. Everything you know might be wrong.* Listen to young minds. Youth brings creativity because it hasn't learned what's supposedly impossible.* Over time, past failures make people too cautious; veterans must keep their beginner's mindset.* Innovation demands courage to look foolish publicly; fear of embarrassment kills creativity.* Stay humble, keep experimenting, and reassess old assumptions regularly. Are there any practices or rituals or ways that you try to keep yourself in that beginner's mind? How can one get the advantages of experience and minimize the disadvantages? (00:08:09)* You must be willing to “go face first into the mud.”* As he said in the previous question, public embarrassment is the price of innovation.* Surround yourself with young thinkers, question assumptions, and resist dismissing ideas based on past failures.* Always check whether past lessons still apply, because markets and contexts change. Jordan gives an example of a failed company born from his overconfidence, where he didn't re-research the market because he assumed he already knew it.What do you consider the most important skills to cultivate for your profession, and how do you cultivate these skills? (00:15:13)* Endless curiosity: Study adjacent fields like comics, fiction, tech—anything that feeds creative cross-pollination.* Build a box: Instead of “thinking outside the box,” define constraints clearly to evaluate ideas. For example: He designed Mage Knight by creating a checklist of problems (ease of entry, low cost, retailer needs) and solving within that “box.”* He values self-education: when he didn't know toy manufacturing, he paid a small company to teach him the process. So let's get to the areas where the industry or you have been dead wrong. What common advice do you hear about your industry that is dead? (00:24:26)* “Nothing is ever dead.” Genres, mechanics, and IPs always come back (vinyl, RPGs, etc.) * When people say something's over, it's actually ready for reinvention.* He used to believe in-person collaboration was essential, but remote work proved him wrong.* He often misjudged products (like thinking Funko Pops would flop).* Absorb wisdom but not edicts.* Success and failure are cyclical, making timing and humility matter more than certainty. What books, articles, or learning resources have had the biggest impact on you? And if there are any key takeaways that stuck with you that come to mind? (00:30:53)* Mentions Reed Hastings' book (Netflix culture) and Creativity, Inc. by Ed Catmull (Pixar). The value here is the small-team principles and leadership lessons, though he's skeptical of the “find five geniuses” model.* His biggest lessons came from mentors, not books: Mark Miller (creator of Traveller): taught him kindness and professionalism. His father, Mort Weissman: joined FASA, ran the business side, and kept it alive.* He emphasizes mentorship, respect, and kindness as lasting business principles. What is the right way to find a partner? (00:33:14)* Finding a partner is like finding a life mate: talk about goals, work habits, expectations.* Negotiate the “prenup” early, meaning you should decide how you'll split if things go wrong.* Avoid the naive approach he took (asking friends at the table). What about systems, software, and tools that have had a big impact on your workflow?(00:38:18)* Internal tool: his “box” process for evaluating ideas.* Software: Slack (no internal email, all communication centralized), Google Docs (collaboration), ClickUp/Jira (task tracking).* Avoid “Not Invented Here” syndrome: don't build tools you can buy.* Focus on your core innovation; outsource or use existing solutions for everything else.* Reuse mechanics unless your innovation demands new ones.* Let your team choose tools bottom-up instead of enforcing top-down.What's your favorite project, and what lessons did you learn from it? (00:45:46)* His favorite is always the one he's working on now, but emotionally, Shadowrun and Crimson Skies stand out. Shadowrun came from trying to differentiate from Cyberpunk and combining fantasy with cyberpunk via the Mayan calendar. Crimson Skies was born from personal burnout after his wife pushed him to rediscover his passion. It led to reinvention and eventually Microsoft's acquisition of his company.* His lesson here is that passion and reinvention are crucial; listen to loved ones and know when to move on from stale success. You can find the previous episode with Jordan below: This is a public episode. Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about a performer that we lost far too soon: Bill Paxton. Our B-Sides today include Brain Dead, Indian Summer, Traveller, and Frailty. Our guest is Billy Ray Brewton, and we cover a lot of ground. We dive into Paxton's Roger Corman origins (Crazy Mama getting reamed out by legend Stella Adler in New York, his ultimate move to Los Angeles, James Cameron, etc.), his love of movie-making and being on set, his tragic death, and much, much more. We mention his first directing gig (“Fish Heads” by Barnes & Barnes on SNL), his last directed feature (The Greatest Game Ever Played), and his recent podcast appearances before his death. There is also this charming late night appearance.

Thinking about downsizing your adventure bike? In this episode we test the waters with a Suzuki DR350—what it really takes to turn a lightweight, simple machine into a workable mini-adventure bike, the choices (and costs) that actually matter, and a few surprises that show up on both pavement and dirt. We start with durability—mirrors and signals, featuring the Doubletake Mirror origin story with Ned Suesse—and wrap with a technique reality check on small-vs-big from Chris Birch.
ADV-X in Canada turned out to be far more than just another riding event. By the end of the first day, faces were caked in dust, grins were everywhere, and the sense of camaraderie was undeniable. From trail-side fixes and overnight repairs to long mountain days, it was passion in motion—riders looking out for each other and a crew ensuring no one was left behind. Combine a world-class terrain with smart logistics that kept everything seamless, a spirit of fun, and you have an event that showcased the very best of adventure motorcycling in Canada. In this episode, you'll learn how the framework came together from Ryan Austin, instructor and owner of Enduro Park Canada in British Columbia—and hear from riders who lived those moments on the trail.
Modern motorcycles aren't just machines anymore—they're equipped with advanced technology. Ride-by-wire means your throttle hand communicates with a processor instead of a cable, and that computer considers wheel speed, lean angle, traction, braking, and more before deciding how your bike responds. With ride modes, you can adjust your bike's personality for pavement, gravel, mud, or rain—varying power delivery, traction control, ABS, and even suspension. In this Rider Skills episode, Clinton Smout of SMART Riding Adventures explains how understanding ride modes can enhance your safety, control, and enjoyment on every ride.
