It's time for another walk. Through the chaos of the last couple of weeks and the signs of spring fighting to break through winter's icy grip. The markets on fire, the world is outraged and our enemies are celebrating. And with so many questions looming about the economy, Trump's decisions and what's next for Ukraine, there might not be a better guest to get a gauge of where things stand. He's maybe the most reasonable Republican in the house, and as a result he's butted heads with everyone. From Laura Loomer all of the way to the Oval Office, Republican Congressman and retired Air Force General Don Bacon is the perfect guest for this episode. He represents the maverick spirit we've seen from so many of the good folk from Nebraska we've profiled on the show. I'm not sure what's in the water out there, but we should bottle it and send it to Washington ASAP. They need it bad. And so do we all. It's a great conversation with an influential decision maker at a critical time in our country's history. Welcome to Independent Americans, Episode 328. Republican Congressman Admits Giving Trump Power Was A Mistake

Republican Congressman Don Bacon is not happy about the economic chaos that Donald Trump is causing, and he admitted during a CNN interview that he would like to take away Trump's power to enact tariffs. He specifically said that allowing Trump to do this at all was a "mistake." Those are strong words for a sitting Republican member of Congress, and Trump probably isn't going to be happy to hear that.New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had harsh words for Donald Trump following Trump's decision to enact 25% tariffs on all automobile imports coming into the United States. Carney said that "nothing is off the table" at this point, and that Canada will be hitting America very hard and very fast in response. The problem that America has is that our leader launched a trade war with no protections in place for Americans, whereas Canada has a fund set up to protect their industries. During a recent press conference that he held from the safety of a foreign country, Secretary of State Marco Rubio boasted about the fact that he has revoked the visas of over 300 foreign students - students that he referred to as "lunatics." This administration is out of control, and these people are innocent of whatever fake excuses that Rubio and Trump come up with. Reporters and journalists were left shocked multiple times last week as a very confused and agitated Donald Trump couldn't answer basic questions. But these weren't "gotcha" questions - they were questions about well-known current events that Trump admitted to having absolutely no clue about. And when he did answer questions, his answers were direct contradictions of reality. The man's mental status needs to be at the forefront because he is barely able to function anymore. Text and and let us know your thoughts on today's stories!Subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay up to date on all of Farron's content: https://www.youtube.com/FarronBalancedFollow Farron on social media! Bridging the Partisan Climate Divide

Former Republican U.S. congressman Bob Inglis offers a conservative perspective on climate solutions in discussion with Penn climatologist Michael Mann. --- Politically conservative and concerned about climate change? In this special episode of the Energy Policy Now podcast, Penn climatologist Michael Mann talks with Bob Inglis, former Republican Congressman from South Carolina and current executive director of RepublicEN.org, about bridging the partisan climate divide. In a wide-ranging conversation recorded live during Energy Week at Penn 2025 at the University of Pennsylvania, Mann and Inglis discuss a conservative view on climate change, how conservative messaging on climate has evolved over time, and how common solutions might be found in an era of partisan climate divide. Inglis also offers his view on carbon pricing and strategies to reign in carbon emissions in the U.S. The conversation is moderated by Sanya Carley, faculty director of the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. Bob Inglis is a former U.S. representative for South Carolina’s 4th congressional district. He is the executive director of RepublicanEn.org at George Mason University. Michael Mann is director of the Center for Science, Sustainability and the Media at the University of Pennsylvania. Sanya Carley is the Mark Alan Hughes faculty director of the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. Important note on the conversation: Due to a technical problem, the first two minutes of Bob Inglis’ conversation are difficult to hear (from 5:40 to 7:40). We’ve transcribed those two minutes in the show notes, below, to make it easier to follow along. A full transcript of this and all Energy Policy Now podcasts is available on the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy website. Bob Inglis (5:40): Yeah, so for my first six years in Congress I said that climate change is nonsense. All I knew was that Al Gore was for it. And as much as I represented Greenville-Spartanburg South Carolina, that was the end of the inquiry. Okay, pretty ignorant. But that’s the way it was my first six years. Out of Congress six years, as you just heard, doing commercial real estate law again and then, had the opportunity to run for the same seat again before, our son had just turned 18, so he was voting for the first time, and he came to me and he said, dad, I’ll vote for you. But you’re going to clean up your act on the environment. His four sisters agreed, his mother agreed. New constituency, you know. So you got to respond to those people who can change the locks on the doors to your house, you know. So, very important to respond to these people. And so that was step one of a three step metamorphosis. Step two was going to Antarctica with the [House of Representatives] Science Committee and seeing the evidence in the iceberg drillings. Step three was another Science Committee trip and, um, really a spiritual awakening which seems improbable, right, on a godless Science Committee trip, because we all know that all scientists are godless. Right? Well, apparently not. Because this Aussie climate scientist was showing me the glories of the Great Barrier Reef. I could see he was worshipping God in what he was showing me. You know, St. Francis of Assisi supposedly said “preach the gospel at all times. If necessary use words.” So Scott Heron, this Aussie climate scientist who’s now become a very dear friend was doing that. I could see it in his eyes, it was written all over his face. It was in his excitement about what he was showing me. He was clearly worshipping God. So I knew we shared a world view. Forty words were spoken. A former Republican Congressman blasted Karoline Leavitt after her latest embarrassing gaffe during a press briefing this week where she falsely claimed that the judge that ruled against Trump over the weekend - James Boasberg - was a "Radical Left" Obama-appointee. David Jolly said that critical thinking has clearly died in this country, and that Leavitt is certainly proof of that. But it wasn't just because she got that wrong, it was how she justified it afterward.Donald Trump held talks with both Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin this week and brokered a very weak "ceasefire" deal between the two countries. Just one hour after both sides agreed to the 30-day deal, Russia sent drones into Ukraine and immediately started hitting hospitals and energy stations, a direct violation of the terms of the agreement. This was Putin's way of showing that he doesn't care about ending the conflict and he won't take orders from Trump.Conservative media outlets are finding it harder and harder to justify some of Donald Trump's actions, and they appear to be losing patience with him on multiple issues. With Fox News hosts starting to be more honest about the state of the economy and other outlets questioning Trump's decisions to completely ignore judicial rulings, the cracks are forming in the conservative media echo chamber. A conservative pollster is warning that Donald Trump has completely misinterpreted the results of the 2024 election, falsely believing that he somehow got a "mandate" from the voters to do whatever he wants. He is using that false belief to cause havoc throughout the world, and voters have already lost patience with his antics. The pollster is now warning that Trump, and the Republican Party, could be in huge trouble due to the fact that Trump doesn't understand what actually happened in the election. Text and and let us know your thoughts on today's stories!Subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay up to date on all of Farron's content: https://www.youtube.com/FarronBalancedFollow Farron on social media! An environmental giant passed last week with the death of Pete McCloskey, a former Republican Congressman who co-authored the Endangered Species Act. He died at the age of 94.  A Marine who served in the Korean War, McCloskey was perhaps best known for the politically fraught move of challenging a sitting president in his own party - Richard Nixon - in the 1972 presidential primary because of the Vietnam War. He was the first member of Congress — from either party — to call for President Nixon's resignation during the Watergate scandal.  After he left public office in the 1980s, he continued to champion peace and environmental causes. About fifteen years ago, he became an early supporter of young people bringing climate cases into the courts. In 2011 he came on Climate One with other experts to discuss the first suits that young people filed alleging the US government has a responsibility to protect a healthy atmosphere for future generations. That effort laid the groundwork for the ongoing case Juliana vs. United States and another that was recently won in Montana. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
