Will AI displace more jobs than it creates? How can the U.S. win the AI race? How can AI benefits be evenly distributed across businesses and society? We explore these questions and more as Sriram Viswanathan sits down with Ronnie Chatterji, Chief Economist at OpenAI, for an in-depth exploration of AI's economic impact and policy implications. Ronnie brings a unique perspective, having served as an economic advisor in both the Obama and Biden administrations as a senior economist, supply chain advisor, and architect of the CHIPS Act.The conversation dives into the economic opportunities and challenges of AI adoption, from productivity gains and job market transformation to the critical need for workforce retraining and AI upskilling in schools. Ronnie also delves into America's competitive position in the global AI race, the critical need for infrastructure investment in order to continue scaling this emerging technology, and the lessons learned from implementing major industrial policy like the CHIPS Act.Links:Learn more about OpenAI's economic research and policy work - OpenAIRead OpenAI's Economic Blueprint for the US - OpenAI's Economic BlueprintExplore the CHIPS and Science Act - CHIPS.govRonnie Chatterji's academic work at Duke University - Duke Fuqua School of Business
While most industries are embracing artificial intelligence, citing profit and efficiency, the tech industry is pushing AI into education under the guise of ‘inevitability'. But the focus on its potential benefits for academia eclipses the pressing (and often invisible) risks that AI poses to children – including the decline of critical thinking, the inability to connect with other humans, and even addiction. With the use of AI becoming more ubiquitous by the day, we must ask ourselves: can our education systems adequately protect children from the potential harms of AI? In this episode, Nate is joined once again by philosopher of education Zak Stein to delve into the far-reaching implications of technology – especially artificial intelligence – on the future of education. Together, they examine the risks of over-reliance on AI for the development of young minds, as well as the broader impact on society and some of the biggest existential risks. Zak explores the ethical challenges of adopting AI into educational systems, emphasizing the enduring value of traditional skills and the need for a balanced approach to integrating technology with human values (not just the values of tech companies). What steps are available to us today – from interface design to regulation of access – to limit the negative effects of Artificial Intelligence on children? How can parents and educators keep alive the pillars of independent thinking and foundational learning as AI threatens them? Ultimately, is there a world where Artificial Intelligence could become a tool to amplify human connection and socialization – or might it replace them entirely? (Conversation recorded on May 12th, 2025) About Zak Stein: Dr. Zak Stein is a philosopher of education, as well as a Co-founder of the Center for World Philosophy and Religion. He is also the Co-founder of Civilization Research Institute, the Consilience Project, and Lectica, Inc. He is the author of dozens of published papers and two books, including Education in a Time Between Worlds. Zak recieved his EdD from Harvard University. Public Relations Specialist Elizabeth McMullen and Sustainability Funding and Communications Specialist Garland Mason of Organic Valley Cooperative join Mary and Eric to share about the common ties that are essential to the farmer-owned cooperative. Cooperation and a strong commitment to the sustainability of small and mid-size family farms, local culture, and community are the most basic ties. In this episode, Elizabeth and Garland outline the history of Organic Valley and how the business started as a vegetable cooperative in 1988 and now has over 1,500 dairy farmer-member owners in 29 states with an average herd size of 70 cows per farm. Preserving small family farms was an impetus for Organic Valley's start. In carrying that mission forward, Organic Valley assists farmer member-owners to be sustainable and profitable through on-farm practices such as solar, composting, solid and liquid separation of manure, reduced tillage, and nutrition management to reduce nitrogen, phosphorus, and gas emissions. Most recently, OV farmers have experimented with Agolin Naturu, which is an organic certified enteric feed supplement made of essential oils of coriander, clove, and carrot that results in better fermentation, digestibility, and less burping. To learn more about Organic Valley's commitment to cooperation, sustainability, and soil health, please visit https://www.organicvalley.coop/ The website also provides recipes and a searchable database of Organic Valley farms near you.As always, we encourage you to cooperate with other farmers and follow the four core soil health principles: 1) Keep the Soil Covered -- Cover crops are our friends; 2) Minimize soil disturbance -- Practice no-till or gentle tillage in your field or garden as much as possible; 3) Maximize living roots year-round -- to improve biodiversity and life in the soil; and 4) Energize with diversity -- through crop rotation and/or livestock integration. Yes, soil health is a great conversation starter because we can all be 4 The Soil and for the future! Summary: In this episode of Be a Smarter Homeowner, Beth Dodson and John Bodrozic dive into a topic you might not think about often — what's hiding inside your storage unit or other outbuildings? Whether it's transitional moves, seasonal gear, heirlooms, or forgotten treasures, too many people lose track of what they own simply because it's out of sight. Beth and John break down why it's critical to inventory your storage units, sheds, barns, or other structures — and how doing so can save you money, protect your investments, and ease the burden on your family in the future. They share real-life stories (including some pretty wild finds!), practical tips for getting started with a simple photo inventory, and why HomeZada makes managing all these spaces easier than ever. You'll also hear how taking just a few hours upfront can prevent the costly mistakes of duplicate purchases, lost heirlooms, and even unwanted appearances on shows like Storage Wars! This is a must-listen if you have any kind of off-site or extra storage — and even if you think you don't! Chances are, you've got more stored away than you realize. “If I go to the good Hopi Indian quote, ‘We don't inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.' I sit in reflection of that and I hope the future generations will lead with heart and they'll be guided by the values that built this legacy to date. That they honor the past by innovating with purpose and with integrity. Everybody's always got to remember that stewardship is a sacred trust, and one that turns heritage into hope.”We're in great company with Shan and Bronwyn Varty, the mother and daughter duo behind Londolozi, who, with their family's one hundred years of history, are pioneering one of South Africa's original private game reserves as a living model of conservation development. Here, they are nurturing a Futuristic African Village, a prototype for village consciousness where wild animals and people alike, live together in dignity and harmony, with each other and the land. It is with an abundance mindset that they have chosen to share this land and legacy with worldly guests, committing to excellence in ecotourism with their accredited Relais & Châteaux status. In celebration of Mother's Day, in this episode, Shan and Bron paint for us a picture of luxury in its purest form—with time as the artist, the senses as the medium, and Mother Nature as the muse. Top Takeaways[2:10] With 100 years of family history living on this land, the Varty's roots run deep and strong as they grow and evolve with their environment.[4:50] The name Londolozi is Zulu for ‘Protector Of All Living Things,' reflecting their ambitious conservation ethic in stewarding our human relationship with the natural world. [7:00] They say “it takes a village to raise a child,” and there is sincere truth in that there is a power of resilience in community, as both Shan and Bron learned early on. [12:30] “When you live in nature, you live in an ecosystem of connection, not comparison.”[15:15] How meditative design is a way of practicing presence, learning to get out of the way and allow nature to lead, creating a sense of place that meets you where you are. [20:00] Londolozi's Camps are a collection woven together with a “Golden Thread”—each with their own significance, but all along a journey through legacy and luxury. [29:15] The Varty's are proud “Artists of Experiences”—curating luxury safaris for every chapter of life—from first-time safaris to multigenerational family trips, from honeymoons to wellness, with photography and more in store,[36:40] The “Ripple Effect” stands for Restoration, Innovation, Protection, People, Leadership, Education.[41:00] Rather than creating something new, Shan and Bron are celebrating 100 years of history by bringing back the old, polishing and preserving along the way.[46:15] Mother Nature's wisdom is in embracing a state of flow that changes with the seasons—recognizing that mothering is not something that is done, it is something that is felt—and can only be done so by slowing down. “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children…” - Proverbs 13:22That verse teaches that a life of faithful stewardship will enable you to leave something of great value to your heirs. How you do it can impact future generations. Jeanne McMains joins us today to talk about “intentional inheritance.” Jeanne McMains has been a practicing attorney in estate planning, business succession, and non-profits since 1995. She currently serves as the Vice President of Gift Planning with The National Christian Foundation (NCF), where she assists families nationwide with achieving their charitable gift-planning goals. What Is an Intentional Inheritance? An intentional inheritance is more than the distribution of wealth. It's a prayerful, purposeful plan for shaping the lives of those who will receive what we leave behind. Inheritance is one of the most significant stewardship decisions we make. It's not just about how much but how—and why—we give. This perspective calls for a deep shift. Before passing on wealth, we must first pass on wisdom. Otherwise, unmanaged or misunderstood wealth can do more harm than good.Start with Prayerful IntrospectionAsk yourself: What role does wealth play in my life? Reframe your mindset around money—not as a measure of success or security but as a tool for Kingdom work. Wealth is an entrustment from God, not an end in itself. That means laying it down at the cross daily, asking the Lord to help us steward it with humility and grace.Three Types of InheritanceTo simplify this big task, here are three kinds of inheritance every Christian family should consider:1. Inheritance to SpendThis is the traditional kind of inheritance—resources intended to provide opportunities, experiences, and essentials. Think of it as financial fuel to help your heirs live productive, content lives. But maturity matters. Consider using this inheritance to fund training, travel, or education before a large transfer, especially if the heir is still developing financial literacy or spiritual maturity.2. Inheritance to ShapeThis is where legacy comes to life. Instead of simply giving money, consider shaping character through shared experiences—like mission trips, retreats, or projects that reflect your family's values.3. Inheritance to ShareWe're blessed to be a blessing. Set aside a portion of your estate to fuel generosity in the next generation. This might include donor-advised funds, charitable trusts, or other giving vehicles your heirs can use to support ministries or causes close to their hearts. This is how we teach our children to reflect God's love through giving.Practical Steps to Craft an Intentional InheritanceHere are four foundational steps to take:1. Engage in Open DialogueTalk with your heirs about the purpose behind the inheritance. Focus less on how much and more on why. Share your values, your heart for the Kingdom, and how you hope the inheritance will be used to bless others. This conversation builds trust, understanding, and spiritual alignment. It's not about dollars and zeros; it's about attitude, opportunity, and calling.2. Work with Faith-Aligned AdvisorsChoose financial and legal professionals who share your biblical worldview. Whether you're working with an estate attorney or a financial planner, the right team will help ensure your legacy is stewarded with wisdom and integrity. That's why we recommend connecting with a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA). To find one near you, visit FaithFi.com and click “Find a Professional.”3. Prepare Your HeirsDon't wait until the inheritance is distributed. Teach your heirs financial literacy and spiritual stewardship now. Let them stumble, learn, and grow while you're still here to mentor and encourage them.4. Use Strategic ToolsLeverage estate planning vehicles like wills, trusts, donor-advised funds, and charitable gift plans. These tools help ensure your assets are distributed in a way that promotes ongoing generosity and reflects your commitment to faithful living.Even well-meaning inheritances can lead to confusion, entitlement, or spiritual drift without intentional planning. But with prayer, purpose, and preparation, your legacy can be a launching pad for generations of Kingdom impact.Want to learn more?Explore practical tools and gospel-centered resources at NCFgiving.com to help you build a legacy of generosity and faith.
