One of the many good things about moving to a new city as an adult is the ability to make new friends unencumbered by past history. It is like pushing a reset button and becoming the person I want to be by creating the life I want. In the world of high society though, where everyone knows not only who you are but also your genealogy tree going back a few generations, is hard to hide from the past. History is history and trying to rewrite the past is an exercise in futility, as there will always be someone somewhere who knows… What is not so hard is to choose your new friends. And so here are the main five categories: Really Good Friends. Are precisely that, those people whom you trust with your life and who have your back. Instantly. You'd do the same for them. Forever. Old Friend. Is someone whom you've known for a long time. Since childhood perhaps? Or school? Old friends are valuable because of their longevity and history with you. You can step in and out of their lives within seconds of re-connecting. Friend. Someone you actually like, a lot. And are willing to spend the time and effort to be part of each other's lives. Serious contenders for 1 and 2 slots. Friendly. People you see around and are in your circle but… you know. Acquaintance. People you have met but don't particularly like. These are the ones that say: “Let's get together” and never follow up. Exes. People who were friends for a while but it didn't last. Normally, the reason for the fallout is as simple as mutual ennui. The good thing about this list is that it is fluid and movable. Nothing is set in stone, well, except for “acquaintances” who will probably have a hard time moving to any other category. It is said that blood makes you related but loyalty makes you family. The family you have to deal with, friends you can choose. And it is those decisions that will make your life great or miserable. Choosing the right friends for the right reasons and not falling into the “what can you do for me” kind of category will allow you to develop lifelong friendships. We all have different categories of friends, close and dear ones. School friends and family friends, friends of friends, work friends, and those borderline ones who sway depending on how the wind blows. It is also great to have different types of friends. There are golf buddies, tennis partners, and gym friends. Book club friends and even movie-going pals. All friends for many different reasons but one aim: To make each other's lives a bit better. What I have learned is not to get upset when people offer a different type of friendship. I cannot expect everyone to have the same ideas as I do. I think about this all the time. What does it mean to be a friend? What are the parameters? How much do I put out without receiving anything in return? What about those who never reciprocate? Or how about those who sort of ignore you one day and not the next? And my answer is this: If the friendship does not grow and develop organically and easily, move on. Just because you may like someone, it doesn't mean the feeling has to be mutual. Right? Make time for those people who are going to be the friends you want. And in this case, I promise, less is definitely more. In the world of high-society relationships are like work. Most people are not really friends; they are mainly acquaintances who live in the same cities, travel in the same circles, belong to the same clubs, and even go to the same dinner parties but are not really friends. Don't be fooled. If you don't believe me, read Barbara Black's book Friends & Enemies. She has some scathing things to say about her high society friends! Having said all that, what I do know is that people are lovely. The majority are kind, loving, and caring. We have all gone through so much, and that is what makes us more empathetic and gives us a deeper understanding of each other. This past history also makes us reserved and careful to whom we open up to… That is totally normal. As you navigate the social world, my biggest piece of advice is to be kind and make an effort. Be present for your friends. Be loyal and understanding. Hold on to those who are close and dear to you. Don't let them go. Keep your group small, make time to be with them, and let go of others who bring unhappiness. Life is too short. Just remember, “Rome was not built in a day.” Meaningful friendships take time. And, Take a Look at: A Bit of Gossip Spotting a Social ClimberMaking an EntranceI once overheard a five-year-old explain to another how to make friends: “Easy, he said, all you have to do is bring a present!”. In the grown-up world, it is exactly the same. Here is a wonderful recipe to make for a new friend. I promise, they will want to be in your life forever! Chocolate Tart Serves 10 (approx.!) This incredibly easy-to-make and incredibly rich chocolate tart will have your guests fainting in their chairs. I promise. So simple and clever and, even more important, it contains no flour or added sugar. Three ingredients: chocolate, eggs, and butter meld together to create a soft, moist, smooth, rich and flavorful tart. Eggs whip better when they are not cold, so either temper them over the hot water or leave the eggs on the counter for at least half an hour so they lose the chill from the fridge. To serve, decorate as you please, with flowers, fruit, and even candles…. 10.5 ozs (3 bars) Semi-sweet or dark chocolate2 sticks (1 cup) European butter, -more for buttering the pan 6 large eggs, at room temperature1 pinch salt2 tablespoons powder sugar, for decoration Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9-inch springform pan (I use the wrapper from the butter). In a double boiler, melt the chocolate and the butter and stir until smooth. Remove from the heat to cool slightly. In a bowl whisk the eggs and salt using an electric mixer, until triple in size and very foamy. Working in batches and using a spatula, fold the eggs and the chocolate until the mixture is all of an even color. Pour into the prepared pan and bake in the oven for about 15 minutes or until the center wiggles just a bit when you move it and the edges are slightly separated from the sides. You want it slightly soft set, not hard as a rock, as it will continue to cook as it cools. It will also separate from the edges of the mold and shrink as it cools. Don't worry. When cool enough to handle, transfer it to a decorative plater and dust with powder sugar. Serve at room temperature or cold. Thank you for subscribing. Leave a comment or share this episode.

Vale a pena escutar!
