My guest for this episode is repeat offender Dave Kerzner, making his third appearance on the show. In his first, we discussed one of his all-time favorite albums, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis. That was a few years ago and he hinted about a Lamb tribute album in the works featuring performers such as Francis Dunnery (It Bites), Nick D'Virgilio (Big Big Train), Billy Sherwood (Yes), Steve Rothery (Marillion), and others. That album is now a reality, with the recent release of Sonic Elements' IT - A 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis. Dave was kind enough to tell me the hows and whys of the new album, which was obviously a painstaking labor of love. It's well crafted, honors the source material, and includes a few pleasant surprises. Find out more about Dave's work at davekerznermusic.com and sonicelements.bandcamp.com. On 2 November, the great Keith Emerson would have turned 80. To honor this anniversary I have remastered the Keith Emerson Tribute program I did in the aftermath of his tragic death. The program has lots of great Emerson music (with The Nice, ELP, and ELPowell) and also features commentary from some great contemporary keyboard players, including Erik Norlander, Aaron Clift, Dave Kerzner, and Luca Zabbini. I hope you will join me in remembering a legend of the Prog Rock genre, who we lost too soon.
DURGA McBROOM LEGENDARY PINK FLOYD BACKUP SINGER REVERED FOR “GREAT GIG IN THE SKY,” AND THE VOICE OF BRIT DUO ‘BLUE PEARL' ZOOM SPECIAL EDITION ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS! Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. After working as an actress, dancer and singer in the United States, Durga McBroom and her sister Lorelei McBroom worked with Pink Floyd as backing vocalists. She went on to have a long stint with them, being the only backing vocalist to appear consistently on all of their shows starting from the November 1987 concert at Omni Arena of A Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour up to the final concert of The Division Bell Tour in October 1994. She also performed on their appearance at the 1990 Knebworth festival and has provided vocals for the Pink Floyd live albums Delicate Sound of Thunder, and Pulse, and the Pink Floyd studio albums The Division Bell, and The Endless River, as well as David Gilmour's 2001 solo tour. Around 1989, McBroom formed the band Blue Pearl with record producer Youth, singing, playing some keyboards and co-writing all of their material. As part of Blue Pearl, she had several hit songs in the early 1990s, including "Naked in the Rain" (UK #4 in July 1990), "Little Brother" (UK #31 in October 1990), and a cover version of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill", all taken from the album Naked, released in 1990 on the Big Life label. Subsequent singles included "(Can You) Feel the Passion" (UK #14 in January 1992). She currently tours the world singing with various bands and has recorded a second Blue Pearl album with Youth. Another album is currently in the works with her sister Lorelei (produced by Dave Kerzner), including some cover songs as well as original material. She and her sister Lorelei are also featured on Steve Hackett's latest album At the Edge of Light, being featured on the chart-topping single “Underground Railroad”. Episode 146 – Sound of Contact Part 1, Dimensionaut The Palaver finally gets to discuss an album that has changed our views of the world. Sound of Contact are deep in Palaver lore even if we didn't know it at the time. We “discovered” this album long after SoC had gone their separate ways, but the impact is not in the least diminished. The quartet of Simon Collins, Dave Kerzner, Matt Dorsey, and Kelly Nordstrom were able to construct one of the all-time strongest prog albums. With deep songwriting, stellar performances, and sublime production, Dimensionaut is an album that continues to reward the listener with new perspectives and ideas even as the music continues to age perfectly. We found out after this episode about some of the trials the band went through while recording this, but the end product remains completely unmarred by any internal strife. LA Weekly dubbed Fernando Perdomo as “The millennial answer to Todd Rundgren.” A scene veteran at 37, he has made a name for himself as an in-demand producer, singer/songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He is a featured guitarist in the Netflix documentary "Echo In The Canyon" where his is seen backing up Jakob Dylan, Fiona Apple, Brian Wilson, Norah Jones, Regina Spektor, Cat Power, and Jade Castrinos. Dave Kerzner is a popular solo artist in the progressive rock scene, a co-founder of the former band Sound of Contact, and as one of the founders of Sonic Reality - which has provided samples and programs to artists worldwide, including Genesis, Beyonce, Madonna, and The Rolling Stones. Perdomo and Kerzner have toured together with Perdomo playing guitar in Kerzner's bands - and both share a long term connection to Brian through the South Florida music scene. In this episode, Brian talks about their origins in South Florida, their influences, their notable collaborations - the process of recording, and generally, how awesome Fernando is.
Produced by Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius Mark and I just about manage to stay in control of the ‘spirited' Fernando Perdomo this week. Ask him about guitar tech and he will literally talk for hours - which is exactly what we want on the YMP of course. What we were left with are many fascinating insights into Steve Howe's guitars and approaches, all based around the greatest Yes album, Tormato. Stay tuned for that hurricane of enthusiasm. How did Howe get those sounds for Tormato and why?Where is the steel guitar? What are the secrets to his guitar approach? In this episode, I reached out to prog rock musician Dave Kerzner, who has worked with virtually everyone at some point, to discuss his projects and his favorite Genesis record. He chose the 1974 classic double concept album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Dave was the perfect person to talk about Genesis with (in general) and specifically about The Lamb. He's played that piece live for a special 20th anniversary performance at ProgFest '94 with Kevin Gilbert and Nick D'Virgilio — who went on to release his own Lamb tribute under the name Rewiring Genesis, and he played drums for Genesis on the Calling All Stations album. "Squids" Kerzner is working on his own Lamb tribute album with Francis Dunner of It Bites (among others), played in Sound of Contact with Phil Collins' son Simon, recently bought a bunch of Tony Banks' keyboard equipment, and has worked with Steve Hackett and famed Genesis producer Nick Davis. There's more, but I'll leave his credentials there for now. Dave and I walked through the album and he dropped in interesting anecdotes along the way. It was a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy revisiting The Lamb with us and perhaps learning more about Kerzner's work. Learn more about Dave's music here. I appreciate you listening! Those chaps from Arc of Life Produced by Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall and Preston Frazier This week Mark and I had a highly enjoyable conversation with Dave Kerzner about his position with Billy Sherwood, Jon Davison, Jay Schellen and Jimmy Haun in Arc of Life. We talk about what he would like the band to grow into and delve a little into his keyboard work with Geoff Downes and Tony Banks. It was a real pleasure to welcome Dave back onto the show. What does Dave want to see in the future for Arc of Life? It's not Yes but what is it?What did Dave do for Geoff Downes? Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon in conjunction with The Jeremy White Podcast present Yes/Asia's Billy Sherwood. (Recorded February 2021) We discuss his new band Arc Of Life and much more. Press Release: ARC OF LIFE is a new progressive rock supergroup which features three members of the current YES line-up, vocalist Jon Davison bassist/vocalist Billy Sherwood, and drummer Jay Schellen. Completing the lineup is one of the most interesting talents in the “new” progressive rock scene in the US, Dave Kerzner (ex-Sound of Contact) on keyboards and Jimmy Haun (also featured on YES albums in the past) on guitars. Their self-titled debut album is slated for release on February 12, 2021. The concept behind the band is, in keeping with the progressive rock philosophy, to craft creative, challenging, and ear-pleasing music that pushes boundaries. The other idea behind the band is that YES would be a clear point of influence. But while YES is clearly the main influence, a lot of musical comparisons can be made to describe Arc Of Life’s grandiose and epic approach to music. But those descriptions are best left to the listeners to discern for themselves as repeat listens will reveal more layers. Arc Of Life is a true garden of delight for all progressive rock fans!
