Few sights in the universe are more impressive than a dying star. The star expels its outer layers of gas, leaving only its small, hot core. Radiation from the core energizes that gas, causing it to glow in a rainbow of colors. It can look like a cat's eye, a butterfly, an hourglass, or many other shapes. Such an object is known as a planetary nebula. One of the closest and brightest is the Helix Nebula. It's about 650 light-years away, in Aquarius. It looks like a set of concentric rings. Filaments of cooler gas radiate out from the center like the spokes of a bicycle wheel. The spokes are behind “knots” of gas and dust that are as big as the solar system. The Helix is shaped like a barrel, and we happen to be looking through the top of it. It spans almost three light-years. The star's core is becoming a white dwarf. Now, its temperature is about 200,000 degrees. It produces enormous amounts of ultraviolet light. It zaps atoms of gas in the nebula, making them glow. Each element shines a different color. Hydrogen and nitrogen are pink and red, while oxygen is green. The color palette helps us understand what was happening inside the star before it began exhaling its dying breath — forming the beautiful Helix Nebula. The Helix is visible through binoculars and small telescopes. Tonight, it's in the south after nightfall. It's about half way between the planet Saturn and the bright star Fomalhaut, to Saturn's lower left.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Built on a sturdy foundation of virtuosic guitarwork and instrumental heavy bliss, the journey for Rohan Stevenson, aka Ro and his project I Built The Sky has been one lined with immersive releases and resounding critical acclaim, from the project beinghttps://www.guitarworld.com/news/i-built-the-sky-jake-howsam-lowe-coalesce ( declared "prog titans") by Guitar World Magazine to http://www.metalobsession.net/2019/10/27/i-built-the-sky-the-zenith-rise/ (being described as one of the best albums of 2019) for the scintillating full-length The Zenith Rise. It was back in 2019 that https://www.thesoundcheck.org/post/interview-rohan-stevenson-i-built-the-sky (The Soundcheck first caught up with )Stevenson about the goings-on for I Built The Sky At The Time, unknowingly right on the doorstep of the COVID-19 pandemic taking its choking grip worldwide and right before I Built The Sky's EP Coalesce, in conjunction with Jake Howsam Lowe (Plini, The Helix Nebula), and also just before Stevenson unknowingly embarked on one of his last tours for a long while alongside Monuments in Europe and the UK. And while 2020 also saw a new track The Fire Inside, featuring guest vocalist Andy Cizek from Monuments, it's in 2022 that the most ambitious and jaw-dropping I Built The Sky chapter yet will fully take flight with an impending new album The Quiet Place - but on this new endeavour, things are not all what they seem. Promising a reimagined take on an entirely acoustic album, The Quiet Place is acoustic done entirely I Built The Sky-style, traversing ten tracks that weld plenty of progressive brilliance alongside dazzling soundscapes, guest musicians and still plenty of familiar riffy goodness that fans have come to expect from Stevenson over the years. Also with a brand new single out today and the new album dropping this Friday, what better time to catch up with Rohan himself, and today he joins Tiana Speter on Season 2, Episode 2 of the Behind The Soundcheck podcast to chat bringing literal dreams to life, sonic exploration and where his love (and prodigy-like skill) for the guitar first began. Welcome to If You Give a Principal a Podcast, a podcast production of the Harrah Elementary School Associated Student Body  and the Mt. Adams School District. I'm your host, and Principal, at Harrah Elementary, Rob McCracken.  Today's episode is an audio retelling of a story written and performed by my grandfather, George Nelsen.  My grandfather became an avid storyteller to entertain his grandkids. Some of my fondest memories are of my sister, cousins, and I listening to one of grandpa's stories.  My grandpa pursued storytelling and wrote and told many stories in classrooms of children across the United States as well as performing in hospitals, nursing homes, and festivals, touching the lives of thousands as “Grandpa from Dakota”.  He founded the Northern Prairie Storytelling Festival held at the University of Sioux Falls and received several national awards for his exemplary leadership and significant contributions to his community through storytelling.  My grandfather loved a good story and he would have been honored to hear our students performing one of his stories.  If this is your first time listening to the podcast, welcome to the show and if you're a returning listener thanks for coming back. So, pull up a chair and see what happens when you give a principal a podcast. Visit masd209.org for news, announcements, upcoming events and resources related to the Mount Adams School District and links to our show. If you have suggestions for future episodes, drop me a line at rmccracken@masd209.org.  Our intro and outro music is “Helix Nebula” by Anamanaguchi and is licensed under an Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States Creative Commons License.  The background music used during the performance was “Little Peace At Christmas” by Squire Tuck and is licensed under a Attribution-Non-Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 International License and can be found at freemusicarchive.org.

Today's episode is an audio retelling of the classic Cinderella tale, in which her feet are a size 87, and she can't go to the royal ball because she is a safety hazard.  This script was originally designed to be performed by students from our Summer School program. However, due to the heat wave in our area, students were kept home.  As they say in show business, the show must go on. Staff members from our Summer School program stepped up to flex their acting muscles.  Fun fact: There are thousands of different versions of this story throughout the world. The earliest known version of this story about a Greek slave girl who marries the king of Egypt was written around 7 BC and AD 23.  Visit masd209.org for news, announcements, upcoming events and resources related to the Mount Adams School District and links to our show. Welcome to If You Give a Principal a Podcast, a podcast production of the Harrah Elementary School Associated Student Body  and the Mt. Adams School District. I'm your host, and Principal, at Harrah Elementary, Rob McCracken.  Today's episode is a short presentation by members of the Mt. Adams School District Dream Makers. The Dream Makers is a youth coalition that started in 2007 when a group of students, under the guidance of school counselors, saw an opportunity to make a difference in their community within the Yakama Reservation.  Dream Makers provides a place for students in the Mt. Adams School District to discuss their problems concerning family, school, poverty, substance abuse, and suicide.  In this episode, titled “Smoking Stinks”, we will meet Samantha Skunk - a magenta skunk - and her friend Solomon the Parrot, as Samantha deals with the unfortunate side effects of smoking. The Samantha Skunk Program uses Samantha Skunk and her friends to present a positive message on health. The stories are designed to be taught primarily at the Pre-k through 2nd grade level and address issues related to prescription and medicine safety, smoking, and lung health and exercise.  Each story is normally taught by members of our Harrah Elementary Dream Makers in brightly colored, full-body costumes. Due to COVID-19 restrictions we have adapted this presentation as an audio presentation.  Each episode is recorded and produced by yours truly.  Our intro and outro music is Helix Nebula by Anamanaguchi The music used during the performance was Testing by Ketsa All audio content is used under the Creative Commons license  The content of today's performance was used with permission from Dover Youth to Youth - a youth empowerment program based out of Dover, New Hampshire taking on the threat of alcohol and drug abuse.  A big shout out goes to Danielle Watkins and her Harrah Elementary Dream Makers crew for lending their theatrical talents to this episode. If this is your first time listening to the podcast, welcome to the show and if you're a returning listener thanks for coming back. Aquarius drifts across the southern sky on autumn nights. Tonight, it’s in the southeast as the sky gets good and dark, and due south a couple of hours later. The constellation is known as the water-bearer. It represents a man or boy pouring water from a vase or cup. Aquarius is one of several constellations in that region of the sky associated with water. Long ago, those constellations made key appearances during the rainy season in the Mediterranean, where the constellations were first drawn. In Egypt, for example, Aquarius heralded the annual flooding of the Nile River — an event that assured a good harvest. It’s hard to see a water-bearer in the stars of Aquarius. In fact, it’s hard to see any pattern at all — its stars are faint and scattered. One of its treasures is visible through good binoculars or a telescope: the Helix Nebula. It’s the final gasp of a dying star. As the star used up the nuclear fuel in its core, it blew its outer layers into space. Today, those layers span about six light-years. They’re zapped by intense radiation from the dying core, causing the nebula to glow. The Helix is actually shaped like a barrel, and we’re looking down the center. The barrel is tilted a bit, so we see its top as one ring, and its bottom as another, shifted slightly to the side. Bright colors and intricate detail show up in images of the nebula — one of the highlights of the water-bearer. More about Aquarius tomorrow. SSC #12: The Origin of Everything by Micah Cash and Jiren Zhu

One of humankind’s most enduring and exciting mysteries is the origin of our universe. For most of history, we could only look up to the skies and speculate on how the world came into existence. Now, modern technology has given us astonishing insight into the universe’s beginnings, inspiring groundbreaking new theories. But what if all this knowledge has only produced deeper, philosophical questions about the world’s oldest question? Renata Kallosh, a leading theoretical physicist at Stanford, spends her days peering into the early universe searching for the elusive theory of quantum gravity. In this episode of the Stanford SciCast, Micah and Jiren talk to Kallosh about what cosmology and physics can tell us about the origins of the universe, and what scientists hope to find in the future. Next, Stanford philosopher of science Thomas Ryckman tells us about the challenges faced by those trying answering the deepest questions about the world. It turns out that trying to understand every aspect of nature is forcing philosophers and physicists to turn to creative and sometimes unsatisfying answers. This episode is an interstellar journey both backward and forward in time. Along the way, we will discover that the origins of the universe are both more complex and more beautiful than we imagined.
