Pero una vez adentro, sacaron una pistola, amarraron a la mujer, que estaba sola, y saquearon la casa. ¿Por qué les dio entrada a esos maleantes aquella mujer? Porque creyó que el uniforme garantizaba que eran agentes de la salud pública. Cuando ella abrió la puerta, le mostraron su tarjeta que los acreditaba como dichos funcionarios, así que los dejó entrar. ¡Por algo será que les enseñamos a nuestros hijos, desde que comienzan a tener uso de razón, a ser desconfiados! Todos sabemos que si nos descuidamos, tenemos la misma experiencia que el Chapulín Colorado, y tarde o temprano llega el momento en que bien podemos decir, como acostumbraba decir el popular humorista mexicano: «Se aprovechan de mi nobleza.» Lo que necesitamos es aprender de las experiencias de los demás a fin de evitar tales incidentes. Así podremos, también como el Chapulín, decir con sinceridad: «Lo sospeché desde un principio...» Y después de salir bien librados de la trampa que nos han tendido los tales cazadores de personas ingenuas, estaremos en condiciones de exclamar triunfantes: «¡No contaban con mi astucia!» Pasando del humor a la sabiduría popular que encierra el refrán que dice: «Hombre precavido vale por dos», entonces vale por cuatro el hombre que prevé dos peligros y no sólo uno. Ese es el caso del hombre que previene tanto el peligro físico como el espiritual. Si tal hombre vale por cuatro, es porque lamentablemente por lo general los demás aceptan que los dos peligros existen, pero no le dan la misma importancia al peligro espiritual que le dan al peligro físico. Ven lo físico como cercano y presente, y lo espiritual como lejano y futuro. Lo irónico es que le dan más importancia al peligro menor, que es físico, que al peligro mayor, que es espiritual, porque no reconocen que lo espiritual, a diferencia de lo físico, tiene consecuencias eternas. A los que se aprovechan de la credulidad del prójimo, en el Sermón del Monte Jesucristo los trata de lobos disfrazados de ovejas y los califica de falsos profetas. Después de advertirles a sus discípulos que «surgirá un gran número de falsos profetas que engañarán a muchos»,1 y que por eso deben cuidarse de que nadie los engañe, Cristo les enseña cómo reconocer a esos lobos: por sus frutos. Esa es la prueba decisiva. «Por sus frutos los conocerán.»2 Así que la clave es no comprometernos con nadie ni poner toda nuestra confianza en nadie hasta ver sus frutos. Juzguemos con prudencia y hagamos preguntas. Hay que conocer a fondo a una persona para saber si es digna de confianza. Si no examinamos los frutos, nos arriesgamos a perder hasta el alma.
