Interview by Angela CroudaceSwedish rock collective The Night Flight Orchestra have always fused nostalgia and ambition, but their latest release, Give Us the Moon, dives deeper than ever before—both emotionally and sonically. Frontman Björn Strid opened up about the band's journey through loss, growth, and creative expansion following the passing of co-founder and guitarist David Andersson.Strid describes the album as “cinematic” and “dreamy,” a result of the emotional weight carried during its creation. “We had to grieve as a band,” he says, reflecting on the impact of losing Andersson. “But we also wanted to find joy again and create something uplifting—something he would be proud of.” The result is a multilayered, genre-fluid soundscape that defies classification, staying true to the band's commitment to musical freedom and sincerity.Themes of space and existential reflection permeate Give Us the Moon, inspired in part by a letter Andersson left behind, wishing to be remembered as “an astronaut floating in space.” This poetic image gave shape to the album's narrative arc and title. Despite their retro influences—pulling heavily from late '70s and early '80s AOR and classic rock—Strid emphasises that their music is not just a throwback. “It's a tradition we want to carry on, but it needs to make sense today.”The band's recent signing with Napalm Records also marked a turning point, opening up new promotional avenues and international exposure, including a surprise interview with CNN. With their growing global footprint, The Night Flight Orchestra is preparing for a return to Australia—a country that left a profound mark on Strid during their last visit, inspiring the emotionally charged track “Melbourne, May I.”Balancing his heavy metal roots (as the frontman of Soilwork) with the melodic, theatrical nature of TNFO, Strid finds fulfilment in the contrast. “I switch between genres easily,” he says, noting that each project brings out a different side of his artistry. As Give Us the Moon soars, The Night Flight Orchestra continues to celebrate both the cosmic and the deeply personal—honouring a lost friend, embracing new creative horizons, and inviting listeners on an unforgettable voyage through sound and soul.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Justine Jones Employed To Serve Interview: Justine sits down with Scott Penfold on the latest Loaded Radio Podcast to dive deep into the band's latest album Fallen Star, collaborating with Will Ramos of Lorna Shore, drawing inspiration from Scandinavian melodic death metal, and how she balances fronting a crushing metalcore band while running Church Road Records. Justine Jones opens up about the emotional and creative journey behind Fallen Star With their highly anticipated fifth studio album Fallen Star arriving back on April 25, 2025, Employed To Serve are ushering in a new era of modern metalcore—one that fuses melody, rage, and raw vulnerability in equal measure. Frontwoman Justine Jones joins Scott Penfold on this week's Loaded Radio Podcast to pull back the curtain on the emotional core of the new record and what fans can expect from this bold new chapter. In the conversation, Justine breaks down the band's stylistic evolution, citing influences like In Flames and Soilwork as guiding lights behind the album's more melodic and expansive sound. “We wanted to create something that felt bigger, more cinematic,” she says. “There's still heaviness—but it's in service of the emotion, not just brutality for brutality's sake.” 'Atonement' with Will Ramos brings fury and fun to the spotlight The podcast also digs into the band's lead single "Atonement", which features none other than Will Ramos of Lorna Shore on guest vocals. The track rips with intensity, and its Office-inspired music video has been making waves for its tongue-in-cheek take on workplace chaos. According to Justine, the idea for the video came from wanting to show a different side of the band. Recording one song at a time, and what it taught Justine about herself In a new approach for Fallen Star, Justine recorded her vocals one track at a time instead of tackling them all at once. The result? A more focused and emotionally connected performance across the board. “It helped me put everything I had into each individual song,” she explains. “That kind of care really brought the record to life.” Running Church Road Records while fronting one of the UK's heaviest bands Aside from her vocal duties, Justine also co-runs the fiercely independent Church Road Records with guitarist Sammy Urwin. The label has become a hub for some of the most exciting rising acts in heavy music. On the podcast, she talks about how that role complements her work in Employed To Serve and why keeping things DIY still matters in today's oversaturated industry. Touring, the future of the band, and staying grounded through chaos With a new UK headline tour on the horizon and buzz building around Fallen Star, Employed To Serve seem poised to take their place among the elite modern metal acts pushing the genre forward. But Justine remains refreshingly grounded: “We're always just trying to make the best music we can—if it connects with people, that's the real reward.” Bio Employed To Serve is a British metalcore band formed in 2011 in Woking, England, by vocalist Justine Jones and guitarist Sammy Urwin. Initially emerging from the underground scene with a raw, grindcore-influenced sound, the band has evolved to incorporate elements of hardcore punk, mathcore, and death metal. Their discography includes five studio albums: Greyer Than You Remember (2015), The Warmth of a Dying Sun (2017), Eternal Forward Motion (2019), Conquering (2021), and Fallen Star (2025). Known for their intense live performances and thought-provoking lyrics, Employed To Serve has been praised for crushing the modern metalcore scene while maintaining a DIY ethos.

Interview by Angela CroudaceOne of the architects of The Gothenburg Sound, Dark Tranquillity are about to storm Australian shores for the first time in over a decade, delivering three exclusive shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. The masters of melodic death metal emerged from Sweden's west coast in the early '90s, alongside titans like In Flames, At The Gates, and Soilwork. Known for their genre-defining mix of razor-sharp riffs, icy keyboards, and Mikael Stanne's haunting vocals, the band melds death metal intensity with gothic and progressive experimentation. Through 13 albums, including iconic releases The Gallery, Character, and their latest, 2024's Endgame Signals, Dark Tranquillity has forged a sound that is as melancholic and thought provoking as it is ferocious.Joining Dark Tranquillity for their momentous return are Melbourne's own melodic metal heavyweights, Eye of the Enemy. Renowned for their crushing riffs and soaring melodies, Eye of the Enemy has earned accolades including a Global Metal Apocalypse Award and numerous Album of the Year mentions. With a history of international tours and supporting the who's who of metal's elite, they're the perfect complement to Dark Tranquillity's atmospheric mastery.Dark Tranquillity will dig deep from their rich catalogue to deliver a sonic journey through the past, present, and future of melodic death metal, but just to make sure, HEAVY caught up with vocalist Mikael Stanne just days out from the first show of the tour.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Canadian-born Jon Mikl Thor began his career in the early ‘70s as a champion body builder competing against the world’s strongest men and winning numerous awards along the way. But his love for heavy metal music compelled him to retire from body building and develop his skills as a musician and performer. Taking the mononym THOR, he quickly gained a devout following in the burgeoning metal scene thanks in part to elaborate and provocative live shows, which frequently featured Jon performing amazing feats of strength - bending steel bars with his teeth and exploding water bottles with his lungs! A performance on the Merv Griffin Show led to a record deal with RCA in late 1976 and the release of his debut Keep The Dogs Away. But it wasn’t until THOR’s follow-up album,1985’s Only The Strong, that he really began to flex his muscles. Thanks to fist-pumping anthems like “Thunder On The Tundra”and the powerful title track, Only The Strong became a landmark release and continues to be heralded as one of the finest metal albums of the ‘80s. As the music scene began to change in the decades that followed, THOR continued to be a champion for true metal, releasing numerous well-received studio and live albums. Then,in 2015, THOR teamed with indie giant Cleopatra Records for a new album, Metal Avenger, which featured special guest performances from many of THOR’s admirers including Henry Rollins, Fast Eddie Clarke of Motörhead, Cheetah Chrome of Dead Boys, Jay Jay French of Twisted Sister and more. A feature-length documentary film, “I Am Thor,” was released in 2016 followed by more studio albums that put THOR in collaboration with some fellow metal deities like W.A.S.P.'s Chris Holmes, Raven vocalist John Gallagher, Soilwork singer Björn Strid, Danko Jones, Anthrax's Neil Turbin, Ross “The Boss” Friedman and others! Now celebrating an incredible 50 years of headbanging domination, THOR shows no sign of slowing down. Indeed, if his newest album and recent tours are any indication, he may just be getting started!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bjorn “Speed” Strid is our guest this week on the podcast! He joins us to help shine a spotlight on the latest album by The Night Flight Orchestra, Give Us The Moon! The discussion starts with if he thinks he would fair well if he chose a career as a steward for an airline, what job he wanted when he was a child, if there's a customer service element in being in a traveling band, the journey of creating music again after the passing of his bandmate and one of his best friends David Andersson, the dream stage show for The Night Flight Orchestra if there was no budget restraints, the plans to bring the project to North America after seven albums, and which power ballad he would love to tackle one day. WolfTalk: Podcast About Audio Programming (People, Careers, Learning)
In this podcast episode, I was very pleased to guest Linus Corneliusson: a mixing engineer and editing assistant at Fascination Street Studios who has shifted towards audio plugin development.I met Linus (and his colleague Jacek) at the Audio Developer Conference 2022 and he's definitely one of the most friendly and funny people in the community. What is even more amazing, he's worked in the studio with top-notch heavy metal bands, like James LaBrie, Soilwork, DragonForce, Haken, Leprous, Dark Tranquility, Between the Buried and Me, and Fates Warning (basically most of the major names in the progressive metal genre). In the podcast, we discus how Linus started creating simple audio plugins on the side which led him to pursuing a full-blown career as an audio programmer for Bogren Digital. We also discuss tools, tips, and resources he used and recommends for starting in audio programming. Are you a mixing engineer looking for a way to transition into audio development? Are you seeking advice on which path to take and which resources are the best to reach out for? Do you need inspiration and motivation? Hell Bent For Metal joins forces for the second time with Riot Act, the alternative music podcast, as their host Steve Hill joins Tom and the returning Matt Rushton to present you with the LGBTQ+ metalhead guide to the Eurovision Song Contest. The annual celebration of kitsch, camp, and occasionally, a good song or two, has long had a huge queer following, and it's even flirted with metal from time to time. The hosts (the ones who like Eurovision, anyway) present their favourite ever performances, and also pick out some of their most hated. And there's obviously chat about the biggest metal moment in the competition's history, a huge queer pioneer winner, some "interesting" UK entries, and the biggest act ever to come out of the contest – themselves a massive gay icon. There's also a round up of a couple of news items from Riot Act's world, plus the Hate Crew Gaybar is open once again, with albums from Muse (at Riot Act's suggestion), Ether Coven and Soilwork going in.It's an epic show, but for a 66-year-old competition that's iconic for the queer communities of entire continent, it's comparatively restrained.
Welcome to a very special episode of Riot Act, the alternative music podcast. This week we are delighted to once again team up with our good friends Tom Dare and Matt Rushton from the excellent Hell Bent For Metal Podcast, for the finest crossover since... er... Suicidal Tendencies. We warm up by chatting about new music in over two decades from Botch, the sad passing of former Cradle of Filth guitarist Stuart Anstis, and looking at new albums from Soilwork, Ether Coven and *sigh*... Muse. Before getting into the real reason we've teamed up; for Steve and Tom to talk the much more youthful Matt through some of the highlights of the longest running televised music contest in history, The Eurovision Song Contest. Expect high camp drama, a Terry Wogan love in, some bizarre stage costumes, some of the finest pop music in history and one of the hottest takes on ABBA you are ever likely to hear in your life!
