Thanks to Alexandra and Pranav for their suggestions this week! Let's learn about manatees and sloths, including a surprising extinct sloth. Further reading: Sloths in the Water A West Indian manatee: A three-toed sloth: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we have a suggestion from Alexandra and Pranav, who wanted an episode about manatees. We'll also talk about another marine mammal, a weird extinct one you may never have heard of. The manatee is also called the sea cow, because it sort of slightly resembles a cow and it grazes on plants that grow underwater. It's a member of the order Sirenia, which includes the dugong, and sirenians are probably most closely related to the elephant. This sounds ridiculous at first, but there are a lot of physical similarities between the manatee and the elephant. Their teeth are very similar, for instance, even if the manatee doesn't grow tusks. The elephant has a pair of big chewing teeth on each side of its mouth that look more like the bottoms of running shoes than ordinary teeth. Every so many years, the four molars in an elephant's mouth start to get pushed out by four new molars. The new teeth grow in at the back of the mouth and start moving forward, pushing the old molars farther forward until they fall out. The manatee has this same type of tooth replacement, although its teeth aren't as gigantic as the elephant's teeth. The manatee also has hard ridged pads on the roof of its mouth that help it chew its food. Female manatees are larger than males on average, and a really big female manatee can grow over 15 feet long, or 4.6 meters. Most manatees are between 9 and 10 feet long, or a little less than 3 meters. Its body is elongated like a whale, but unlike a whale it's slow, usually only swimming about as fast as a human can swim. Its skin is gray or brown although often it has algae growing on it that helps camouflage it. The end of the manatee's tail looks like a rounded paddle, and it has front flippers but no rear limbs. Its face is rounded with a prehensile upper lip covered with bristly whiskers, which it uses to find and gather water plants. Every so often a manatee will eat a little fish, apparently on purpose. Since most herbivorous animals will eat meat every so often, this isn't unusual. Mostly, though, the manatee spends almost all of its time awake eating plants, often from the bottom of the waterway where it lives. It lives in shallow water and will use its flippers to walk itself along the bottom, and also uses its flippers to dig up plants. Its upper lip is divided in two like the upper lips of many animals, which you can see in a dog or cat as that little line connecting the bottom of the nose to the upper lip. In the manatee, though, both sides of the lips have a lot of muscles and can move independently. There are three species of manatee alive today: the West Indian manatee that lives in the Gulf of Mexico down to the eastern coast of northern South America, the Amazonian manatee that lives exclusively in fresh water in the Amazon basin, and the West African manatee that lives in brackish and fresh water. Sometimes the West Indian manatee will also move into river systems to find food. Back in episode 153 we talked about the Florida manatee, which is a subspecies of West Indian manatee. In the winter it mostly lives around Florida but in summer many individuals travel widely. It's sometimes found as far north as Massachusetts along the Atlantic coast, and as far west as Texas in the Gulf of Mexico, but despite its size, the manatee doesn't have a lot of blubber or fat to keep it warm. The farther away it travels from warm water, the more likely it is to die of cold. In the 1970s there were only a few hundred Florida manatees alive and it nearly went extinct. It was listed as an endangered species and after a lot of effort by a lot of different conservation groups,

According to a paper published on August 24th, 2022 in the journal https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.211994 (Royal Society Open Science), the Dugong is now “functionally extinct” in China. These gentle marine mammals, sometimes referred to as sea cows, are one of four species of the order Sirenia. They are the cousins of the Amazonian manatee, West Indian manatee, West African manatee, and the now extinct Steller's sea cow. These peaceful creatures invoked myths of mermaids and fantasy, existing in Chinese waters for thousands of years. Now, because of habitat loss, food loss, hunting, and collisions with watercraft, the Dugong is now one step closer to meeting the fate of their Steller cousin, and only other member of the Dugongidae family. https://thewildlife.blog/2022/08/26/new-study-suggests-the-dugong-is-functionally-extinct-in-china/ (Transcript) Support
Mermaids are the fly in the ointment in Lydia Millet's very funny satirical novel Mermaids in Paradise, “an absurdist entry into the mundane,” as she puts it. And, yet, her mermaids, who have bad teeth and the particular features of individuals, also draw us into the wonders of the ocean itself. Mermaid lore, Millet reminds us, recalls manatees and the order of the Sirenia, and it speaks to “the way we imprint our imaginations onto the wild.” One of the most interesting writers working at the intersection of fiction and environmentalism, Lydia Millet has written over a dozen novels and story collections, many about ties between humans and animals and the crisis of extinction. Her story collection Fight No More received an Award of Merit from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2019 and her collection Love in Infant Monkeys was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2010. In this episode, we discuss her 2015 novel Mermaids in Paradise and the ways in which she uses these hybrid, mythical creatures to address our environmental crises. We also talk at length about story telling, the kinds of stories we tell and how they both help and hinder our relationship with the natural world.

A review of the debut album from North American symphonic metal act Everdawn entitled ‘Cleopatra'. Everdawn isn't an entirely new band, but a reconstituted version of a previous act Midnight Eternal. The musician you're most likely to recognize from Everdawn – and a key additional in the changed lineup from Midnight Eternal – is bassist Mike LePond who many might know from Symphony X, also Ross The Boss band, Death Dealer, and many other projects. He brings a steady, veteran presence to this new incarnation of the band. Another fresh face in the lineup is vocalist Alina Gavrilenko, who also goes by the moniker Alina Snowmaiden, taking the vocal duties in place of Midnight Eternal singer Raine Hilai. To my ears, and one of the big differences with this new Everdawn release for those who heard Midnight Eternal's album, is that Raine's voice was a bit more Liv Kristine-esque, while Alina's vocals bring a bit less sweetness and more muscle. Now, in terms of what Everdawn offers on ‘Cleopatra', the listener can expect fairly straightforward European-style symphonic power metal. There's more emphasis on the power here than the symphonic style, and you won't find any massive backing orchestrations along the lines of Xandria or Sirenia. As far as the singing, its mostly operatic soprano female vocals occasionally bonded with clean male singing. No growls in this one. Listening through this album about a half dozen times, I come away generally impressed. There is something different and interesting in each song. While they don't get very progressive stylistically – mostly adherering to clear verse-chorus structure – they still mix it up and surprise on occasion. I'll say I found the second half of the album was somewhat stronger than the first. Looking at that first half: the rocking, up tempo intro “Ghost Shadow Requium” was decent but let off the gas too much and might have been better placed mid-track list. Both the title track “Cleopatra” and “Your Majesty Sadness” had the band going for a big sound. I do give points for effort here, and truly did enjoy both songs – but I'm not sure they quite nailed it with the choruses on each being a bit of a let down. “Stranded In Baglore” – which I believe is the first single released off the album, is a decent, catchy track. I could see this being one I'd enjoy more live than on record. But as I moved further into the album I found more to appreciate, or maybe their approach just grew on me. “Infinity Divine” has maybe the best vocal melody on the record building to a great crecendo – echos of Tarja Turunan – really excellently done. “Rider Of The Storm” and “Lucid Dream” both show the guitars attacking with even heavier riffage and more solid operatic highs from Alina, plus some nice keyboard work. The song “Heart Of A Lion” is the most anthemic track and could be right off a Leaves' Eyes album. And then there's Toledo 712 AD, which is entirely instrumental! Easily the heaviest song and a sterling headbanger. Looking back over the entire tracklist I'm not knocking the earlier album songs, but those later on the agenda seem to come with an overall more ‘metal' feel. The party really develops the further you listen in to this one. So, how do I rate this album ‘Cleopatra'. Well, as far as debuts go, this is pretty strong; give em three points for that. Delivering solid symphonic power metal based out of North America – where the genre needs more representation - earns them five more points. The first half of the album wasn't as strong as it could've been – minus a point, but the second half more than made up for it – plus two points. Total it up and that's 9 out of ten for Cleopatra. It's early so far, but so far ‘Cleopatra' is my fav album of 2021! Listening to this release really I'm very much looking forward to hearing more from the Everdawn and perhaps the opportunity to see them live in the future.
