In this Lozano Smith Podcast episode, host Sloan Simmons engages with Lozano Smith Partner, Manuel Martinez, and Senior Counsel, Alyse Pacheco Nichols, to discuss this statutory reorganization; guesses as to the Legislature's rationale for the reorganization; and how this reorganization will or will not effect the way public agencies response to CPRA requests.

Time was, every town had cobblers and tailors. Fairy tales and history books alike are replete with references to these noble tradesmen, who kept people "shodded" and clothed. Today, you can still look good in a sharp suit and shiny shoes. Commerce has evolved from local service providers to department stores, big box retailers and online sites, but, here in Baton Rouge, although old fashioned businesses have become fewer and far between, they haven't completely disappeared. Clyde Lawrence is owner of MIlitello's Shoe Repair, a venerable Baton Rouge business that has been around since 1972. Everybody knows Militello's and gets their shoes repaired there, or, at least, polished and shined. Clyde came to Baton Rouge from his native Bossier City to seek his fortune in the chemical plants in the mid-1970s. He stumbled instead into Militello's and landed a job. He's been there ever since. In early 2018, he and his wife bought the business from longtime owner Fred Militello, who was retiring. Arguably, no one was better suited to run the service-based business but Clyde, at the time, was himself thinking about retirement. Instead, he jumped in with both feet, took the plunge and today is not only the local tradition alive, he's growing the business! Geno Brown is co-owner of Brown and Brown Custom Clothiers. Geno has been a custom tailor almost his entire career, because Brown and Brown is a family-owned business that was started under the name Fashion Limited, by Geno's father, the late Eugene Brown, who died in 2019. Today, Geno and his brother, O'Lindsey Brown, run the company, which was re-branded in 1993 when the Browns moved away from carrying ready-to-made clothes and started making their own custom, handmade garments using fabrics the Browns find on buying trips around the world. Geno didn't necessarily intend to be a haberdasher. He went to Morehouse College and graduated from Southern University with dual degrees in math and physics, then taught physics for a year before joining the business. He holds certified master tailor and certified master clothiers designations. Out to Lunch Baton Rouge is recorded over lunch at Mansurs On The Boulevard restaurant. You can see photos from this show at our website. Check out Baton Rouge's other premiere tailor Manuel Martinez. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Starting at age 4, Solheim has led a paranormal life and encountered angels, ghosts, demons, haunted houses, spirits of all kinds, cryptids, telekinesis, telepathy, and more. The modern scientific world has no patience for the 'paranormal.' High strangeness experiences are explained away as dumb luck, coincidence, or misperception. Surely, we're told, no educated person could possibly believe in telepathy, spirits, ghosts, or magic. But in a spellbinding series of true vignettes in the life of college professor Bruce Olav Solheim, the paranormal is vibrantly alive. Timeless is not about belief. It's about genuine experiences that science has yet to understand. Highly recommended. Woah...the big 6-0! As always we have another great show lined up for you all. Enjoy!Manuel agrees that finding diverse talent in tech is a challenge, but it is one that companies must take full front and approach using different strategies. He agrees that dropping a CS degree requirement for software roles makes a lot of sense. At the end of the day companies need engineers that can get the job done. How or where they learned the skills necessary to do the job should not be that important. Manuel also believes that the apprenticeship pattern could work in the tech space as a way to break barriers into the industry. To retain diverse staff, he thinks that the workplace should foster a sense of community. Make a clear statement that the executive/leadership team supports and is involved in programs that promote inclusion. Then encourage grassroots teams or ERGs that are created organically to further build employee relationships.Manuel Martinez-Herrera is the General Counsel at BetterCloud, a B2B SAS company that specializes in SAS Ops. He has experience working in the legal departments of both tech and non-tech companies. Manuel is passionate about being involved in workplace diversity programs. He is leading a diversity council at BetterCloud and was involved with diversity initiatives at his previous employer, Namely. Bruce Olav Solheim was born on September 3, 1958, in Seattle, Washington, to hard-working Norwegian immigrant parents, Asbjørn and Olaug Solheim. Bruce was the first person in his family to go to college. He served for six years in the US Army as a jail guard and later as a helicopter pilot. He earned his PhD in history from Bowling Green State University in 1993. Bruce is currently a distinguished professor of history at Citrus College in Glendora, California. He also served as a Fulbright professor in 2003 at the University of Tromsø in northern Norway. Bruce founded the Veterans Program at Citrus College and cofounded, with Manuel Martinez and Ginger De Villa-Rose, the Boots to Books transition course—the first college course in the United States designed specifically for recently returned veterans. He has published five books, has written seven plays, two of which have been produced.

Boy do we have another fun one for you today, dear listeners. On today's episode we're talking about lovable psychopath, Jose Manuel Martinez. He loved three things in life: murdering people, taking care of his family, and murdering people. You may notice I said murder twice, and that's because he really, really loves murdering people. Almost as much as he hates Tulare county cops. All the shootings you can handle, creepy prison love letters, and hilarious quotes abound. Enjoy!

Extensive writing research was performed to ensure that Solheim's personal experiences were historically framed with painstaking detail.

The beloved son of Holocaust survivors, forty-nine-year-old George Kogan grew up in Puerto Rico before making his way to New York City, where he enjoyed great success as an antiques and art dealer. Until one morning in 1990, when George was approached on the street by an unidentified gunman—and was killed in cold blood. Before the shooting, George had been on the way to his girlfriends’s apartment. Mary-Louise Hawkins was twenty-eight years old and had once worked as George’s publicist. But ever since they became lovers, George’s estranged wife, Barbara, was consumed with bitterness. As she and George hashed out a divorce, Barbara fueled her anger into greed—especially after a judge turned down her request for $5,000 a week in alimony. Barbara, who stood to collect $4.3 million in life insurance, was immediately suspected in George’s death. But it would take authorities almost twenty years to uncover a link between her lawyer, Manuel Martinez, and the hitman who killed George. In 2010, Martinez agreed to testify against his client…and Barbara eventually pled guilty to charges of grand larceny, conspiracy to commit murder, and murder in the first degree.
