We're joined by Author Brian Heaton, to promote the new book “Roads To Madness: The Touring History Of Queensrcyhe 1981-1997”, a book that covers the Seattle Metal Band during their formative years through the peak of their commercial success with the original Band lineup. Brian shares why he decided to make a book as a natural follow-up to the website he ran for many years that archived the Band performances, setlists, the cities & venues they played at, the Bands they supported & the ones who opened for them. Additionally, he comments on including images of the great memorabilia that comes along with the concert experience: ticket stubs, concert photos, backstage passes, t-shirts, etc., how he obtained them & how the fans played a bit part in helping him piece together the book because of their contributions. Also, the Author provided great insights on the origins of the Band when they were called The Mob (1981) as a Cover Band, Geoff Tate joining, getting signed to a major label, opening for Quiet Riot, Dio, Twister Sister, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Ozzy, AC/DC, & Bon Jovi throughout the 80s, their rise to fame while on the road with Def Leppard & Metallica supporting “Operation Mindcrime) & becoming an MTV staple & arena headlining act while promoting “Empire”. May 3, 1988, may just be the biggest, red-letter, landmark date in all of progressive metal, as it marks the release of QUEENSRYCHE's 3rd studio album OPERATION: MINDCRIME, one of the finest concept albums in all of metal. It's very much a “Pink Floyd meets heavy metal” style and vibe, and is quite a departure from their two previous albums (The Warning & Rage For Order), with a very “in your face” mix, some power metal overtones, and perhaps the most aggressive bass sound on a metal album EVER, which is weirdly ironic considering that QUEENSRYCHE was the weirdest opening band choice to open for the biggest thrash metal band on the planet (at the time) who had just released an album that, conversely, had the most absent bass sound on a metal album EVER. (Sometimes life is just way too weird…) Remember that $25 was a small price to pay in 1988 to become “a happy man” even though “only YOU can make YOU happy” (because “you rent ‘em, you don't buy ‘em”). Prepare to find out the answer to “which would be worse?”, discover where to go for any “gift ideas”, learn the identify of Matt's doppelganger and hear about Russell's “Mr. Miyagi moment”, including the resulting “truck trim” prior to making his transition from guitar player to bass player. Remember that “any band who mentions two thrash references on one album can't be all that bad”, go get yourself a summer “skinjob” and JOIN US as we dive into one of the most world-renowned rock operas in all of metal with OPERATION: MINDCRIME. Geoff Tate, the legendary former Queensryche front man, is my latest guest on the Talkin' Rock with Meltdown podcast. Geoff is always thoughtful and enjoyable to talk with. We talked about what he's been doing this summer, which included a lot of time in Montana, fishing and hiking and singing songs around the campfire. He spoke to hanging with Anthrax front man, Joey Belladonna. Geoff's bringing his tour to District 142 in Wyandotte on September 27th. He gave me a health update after having heart valve replacement surgery last year. He's back at it with a lot of dates, many back-to-back. He said he likes to play those shows as it keeps him sharp. Is he surprised that an album like Operation Mindcrime has stood the test of time. "Yeah, I am surprised. I'm grateful and humbled by the experience." As far as new projects, he's working on a third Sweet Oblivion album, and possibly another one that he couldn't mention as of yet. He also gave an update on his upcoming autobiography. "I'm pretty close to getting that done." He spoke to how difficult it is to write his own story. We wrapped things up by talking about a project he was involved with back in the 80s called Hear N' Aid project that Ronnie James Dio came up with. He talked about the legends that were included, and being totally start struck with the likes of Rob Halford, Ted Nugent and others. Great story! Check out the interview below.... -Meltdown-
Right out of the gate with Queensryche's debut EP, Geoff Tate was heralded as one of the top vocals in metal...then, the band took it to the next level with their platinum selling concept album. "Operation:Mindcrime"....and after parting ways with the band in 2012, he's continued to forge new paths, while remaining one of metal's finest voices. And now, a year after open heart surgery, he's ready to hit the road with his "Big Rock Show Hits Tour"!!
This Week On America's Podcast The Mooger Fooger Joins Us . In our review of Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" album, we had differing opinions on whether it is good or bad. Some of us found it to be a stellar and groundbreaking album, praising its compelling storytelling, intricate musicianship, and dynamic vocal performances. On the other hand, there were those who had reservations about certain aspects, such as the album's concept being overly complex or the production quality not meeting their expectations. Ultimately, the episode provided a balanced discussion of the album, highlighting both its strengths and weaknesses, allowing listeners to form their own opinion. Tracks of the Week: Mooger Fooger, "My Disease" by Minefield Jerry, "Dirty Laundry" by Don Henley "Breaking My Balls' by Big Cock and Charles, "Not Now John" by Pink Floyd, Until next week if you see us running someone stole our BEER! #queensrcyhe #metal #conceptalbum #rockopera

On the 39th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1988 concept album by Queensryche, "Operation: Mindcrime." This was Queensryche's 3rd studio album. Lead singer, Geoff Tate cam up with the idea of the concept album after living in Canada and then convinced guitarist, Chris DeGarmo who then got the rest of the band interested. The story is about a man named, Nikki who gets involved in political assassinations, drugs and revolutions. The band was led by vocalist Geoff Tate and his unique look and incredible vocal range. The dual guitar attack of Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton and rhythm section of bassist, Eddie Jackson and drummer, Scott Rockenfield provide the unique Queensryche sound. The album was produced by Peter Collins and showed that Queensryche although wrongly lumped in with hair metal bands of that era, was something original and had something to say. . As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 35 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. Episode 132 – Queensryche Part 7, Operation: Mindcrime Live We are not QUITE finished with Operation: Mindcrime. In this episode Joe and Paul, with a cameo from Ken in the middle, consider live performances of this epic concept album. Of course we have to start with the (apparently) timeless Operation: Livecrime. While Livecrime captures the band and their height, Mindcrime at the Moore provides a slightly different and more graphic interpretation of the work by a band that has grown in many different ways. We have a great time comparing and contrasting these two performances, as well as sprinkling in some of Geoff's more recent performances of this material. Four episodes in and there is still much to say about this seminal album. This was the 4th Shout It Out Loudcast Patreon pick and the guys have a lot to say and discuss. So remember now to speak to Sister Mary and don't look into the eyes of a stranger! Episode 131 – Queensryche Part 6, Operation: Mindcrime Pt 3 The group finally reaches the end of Operation: Mindcrime! Picking up with The Mission, the Palaver continues this labor of love. We touch on all the story points, the stellar music, and, of course, Tate's mind-bending vocals. The second half of Mindcrime is rich with indicators for where the band will go next, while maintaining the relentless pace of the record. The impacts are multiple and significant as we complete our exploration of this seminal album. Enjoy! In Episode #062, Chris and Gregg help tell the story, and give their thoughts and opinions of one of, if not the best concept album of all time..... Operation Mindcrime, by the vastly underrated Queensryche. This is gonna be killer..... literally!!!
Episode 130 – Queensryche Part 5, Operation: Mindcrime Pt 2 We finally get into the music of Operation: mindcrime (after a short detour into the myriad differences between heavy metal, hair metal, and hard rock). We narrowly avoid the pitfall of “is Chris DeGarmo the Phil Collins of Queensryche” (that's a joke!) before we get eyeballs deep in the delightful soundscape that is the first half of this album. We consider the songwriting, production and world-building of a band at their peak. This album presents a host of delights in which we revel. We hope you enjoy this palaver and album as much as we do. Episode 129 – Queensryche Part 4, Operation: Mindcrime Pt 1 There was tremendous excitement leading up to this first (of several) discussions of Operation: mindcrime. High spirits and hyperbole abound as we consider the general aspects of Queensryche's landmark third full-length release. We consider all the appropriate (and inappropriate) context we could find as we walk around the outside of this highly regarded record. We consider concept albums, production, inspiration, and general context as we try to frame out the beauty that is mindcrime! There's an old baseball adage that claims the key to successful club management is keeping the players that hate you away from those who are undecided. The same could be said of keeping persons who hate Queensryche's 'Operation : MIndcrime' and W*A*S*P*'s 'The Crimson Idol' (ie. me) away from those who attempt to determine which was better (ie. Blackie Lawless, who has revised his earlier opinion on the subject). THIS LINCOLN TOWN CAR'S NOT BIG ENOUGH FOR THE BOTH OF US. Please keep this mind when making holiday party invitations, thank you.
Join Montag, Chop Top, and Dreadbull as they call the round-by-round action as two titanic concept albums, Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime and Dream Theater's Metropolis, pt.2: Scenes from a Memory, duke it out! Who will win this mega heavyweight bout?
On this episode of CHRIS AKIN PRESENTS..., Chris chats with WASP vocalist Blackie Lawless about the 40 Years Live: Back To The Beginning Tour. They chat about a bunch of issues, including the new tour, the unique meet and greets, the scope of this new live set, if CRIMSON IDOL is better than OPERATION MINDCRIME, if he has changed his stance on playing "Fuck Like A Beast" and much more. On a personal note, I think this is one of the best interviews I've done in awhile, and certainly my best with Blackie!! We are stepping out of our DT comfort zone and doing our first-ever off-DT episode! In the past we've discussed talking about bands that influenced Dream Theater, and on this show – we are finally putting our money where are mouths are! We are digging into one of the very best concept records of all time… Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime. The only challenge here… can we find ANYTHING negative to say about it?
