A large throng turned out in the city to celebrate—replete with automobiles. An estimated 800 Ford owners and their vehicles attended, perhaps drawn by the prizes being offered.

Bismarck – Mandan, North Dakota is a metro area of about 130,000 people. They have a diverse economy and are the state capital. Their economy includes 3 colleges, energy production, 3 hospitals, and helps keep the area growing and thriving. The chamber merged back in 2019 with their economic development group. That has been their greatest success. It has allowed them to bring more value to the area. Their events, membership, revenues and more have all increased. They have about 1,200 members currently. More than 70% have less than 20 employees. That means they can provide more value with this partnership to help bring more traffic to these smaller businesses. If you're merged with other community organizations, Brian suggests picking one thing and doubling down on that if you're having a hard time figuring out what to do with a small team.Their biggest challenge is workforce. Labor is a big issue for businesses of all sizes. They are working to quantify a workforce development strategy. They are working at a liner level. They have programs that are starting at elementary school and supporting people all the way through college to help develop career opportunities and keep grads in the area.Brian's tip is to call someone every single day, buy lunch for someone every single day. We tend to only call when we need money. They have 13 staff. Every week each person is responsible for calling 2 members to say thank you and find out how you can support them. Native American communities have struggled with the conflict of “invisibility,” and a native American artist cooperative in the Bismarck Mandan area is tackling that issue by putting native artists first. Contributor Alicia Hegland-Thorpe explains.

Are you a member of a local chamber of commerce or other business organization? What are some of the benefits, and challenges, you face by being a member, or NOT being a member? Episode 29 - Chelse Simon from the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce Today we talk about those challenges and opportunities with Chelse Simon, Amanda Schweiter, and David Leingang of the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce. They touched on some of the networking, leadership, volunteering and other opportunities that Chamber members and non-members can take advantage of within the Chamber. We also talked about why or why not your chamber could be active within the political arena and how chamber members can either get educated or share their experince with other business professionals. Take advantage of your local chamber by contacting their leadership either through the web, on the phone or just go there in person, and see how joining can benefit your small or solo business. We did talk about some tech issues before the interview, mostly concerning Verizon' Unlimted plan. While it's not a good fit for me, I would encourage you to call their sales professionals and review your current account settings and whether or not the unlimited plan, or one of their other plans is a good account for you. We also talked about Google Home and Amazon Echo possibly making phone calls by the end of the year, finally overcoming some regulatory and technical issues. I'm excited for this and will be keeping a close eye on this one. Don’t forget to send us any suggestions for apps to review or people to interview. And subscribe to the BeBizzy Break Podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio. And as always, leave the technical stuff to us!

In this week's episode of Commercial Real Estate Elite: Broker to Brokers I visit North Dakota and talk to Jill Duemeland, a fourth generation of Duemelands Commercial. At Duemelands, Jill specializes in tenant and landlord representation and sale and leasing of industrial, medical, and retail properties in Bismarck-Mandan, North Dakota; South Dakota; and Minnesota. Jill earned her CCIM designation at the age of 26 and is also an active member of NAR and ICSC. In 2009, Jill was invited to become a member of Vistage International, a chief executive organization. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in real estate from University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota and is licensed in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota. In 2010, Jill received the honor of being listed as a Rising Star by CCIM Institute and in 2009 Jill received the distinction of being listed in North Dakota Business Watch's List 40 under 40. And i first learned about her through Rod Santomassimo's great book Broker's Who Dominate. I am extremely impressed by Jill. She obviously has the business in her blood. But she also took great strides to create her path. In fact, she promotes moving away and working outside of the family at the onset of her career as one of the best things she did starting out. She also stresses delegation when trying to balance between brokerage, firm presidency and mostly maternity leave! What struck me most in this interview is Jill's efforts to "cut out the noise". Our business is all about focus and she shares several techniques and anecdotes on the importance of this concept. We also touched upon pushing your clients respectfully but confidently as we are the market expert, not the client. Among a lot of other great tips, she also suggested tracking lessons learned from each deal and discussing them as a team or firm. Jill is a talented and hard working broker. I enjoyed this talk and hope you do as well.
Speaker or Performer: Karen Van Fossan, Bismarck Mandan UU Minister Date of Delivery: September 27, 2015 In our Bismarck-Mandan community, some of us understand Unitarian Universalism as our religion. Others affirm our tradition because it supports us to be spiritual without being religious. Still others claim our tradition as an essential source of meaning, looking for neither religion nor spirituality. What do we need from each other -- and ourselves -- to thrive in this community together? A long-time member of our congregation, Karen Van Fossan recently began serving as our minister, after graduating from United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities this year. In addition to her ministerial duties, she serves the larger community as a pastoral counselor, psychotherapist, and advocate for the prevention of childhood abuse. This is her first sermon in her new role with us.YouTube video: https://youtu.be/a1Cnfoh3E4c
