We're diving deep into the dark waters of Leech Lake—not the one in Minnesota (though we'll explore that later), but the mysterious and enchanted lake from the Practical Magic book series. In Alice Hoffman's story, this version of Leech Lake resides in Massachusetts. It's said to be home to a serpent-like water creature that Faith Owens befriends—a being cloaked in shadow and folklore. The Owens women often swim in its waters, though they're never able to dive beneath the surface, only float. It's also aplace marked by tragedy, with more than one drowning said to have occurred there. But our journey doesn't end with Leech Lake. We'll be castingour net wider to explore legendary sea serpents and monsters from across cultures and mythologies—from the elusive Loch Ness Monster to the ancient and fearsome Leviathan... And also with Leviathan, comes yet another unexpected Practical Magic Soundtrack connection! The Magnolia Street Podcast intends to discuss the movie, “Practical Magic” in its entirety. "Is that a snake tattoo!" It sure is! His name is Greg and he's on Kristina's wrist! (Gillian would approve)In celebration of the Year of the Snake, the Stinas slither down all the twists & turns of snake symbolism in the Practical Magic film as well as the book series. They analyze Gillian's character arc as well as her fashion choices, and how they coincide with the snake-like persona she takes on since meeting Jimmy. They also find answers to more burning questions - What do snakes have to do with twin flames and vampires?! And what is actually swimming in Leech Lake?! Is it a snake? Is it an eel? Are a Garter Snake & Garden snake the same thing?!We also unravel the mythology of the ancient Ouroboros symbol throughout time and culture and show you how snake energy can be used in spell work.SOCIALS:Link TreePatreonInstagramHERO SOURCESDISCLAIMERThe Magnolia Street Podcast intends to discuss the movie, “Practical Magic” in its entirety. Group looks to protect wild rice for future generations by giving it rights under state law

The heavy rains and flooding that affected much of Minnesota last spring and summer may seem a lifetime ago. But it's a weather pattern we are expected to see more of as the state becomes warmer and wetter. These conditions are also hard on wild rice, which needs shallow water, especially early in the growing season. One way people who are concerned about the future of the plant are working to protect it is through the law. A campaign launching this year asks the state of Minnesota to grant legal rights to wild rice, as the White Earth Band of Ojibwe and the 1855 Treaty Authority have done. Leanna Goose is an organizer with the Rise and Repair Alliance, a member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and a researcher who is working to reseed wild rice on Leech Lake. She is speaking in a panel discussion Sunday at the Great Northern Festival's Climate Solutions Series, moderated by MPR News reporter Melissa Olson. Leanna Goose joined MPR News host Nina Moini to talk about the campaign.

Two years after the EPA found high levels of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) contamination in the drinking water at the K-12 tribal school on the Leech Lake Reservation, students and staff are still forced to consume only water brought in from outside the building. Leech Lake is one place tribes are having to respond to the presence of PFAS, a class of man-made chemicals used in fire suppressing foam, water repellents on textiles, and older nonstick cookware. High PFAS exposure is connected to some health problems including cancer and thyroid disease. Nearly 100% of Americans have PFAS in their body. Information specific to Native Americans is limited. "We are now looking at so much rain falling in the Crow basin and over the entire Minnesota basin that all of this is going to be funneling through the Mississippi in St. Paul,” Schmidt said. “We are looking at it to continue to rise close to major flood stage by late next week." This is an MPR News morning update, hosted by Phil Picardi. The word "reservation" implies "reserved" – as in, this land is reserved for Native Americans. But most reservation land actually isn't owned by tribes. That's true for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in northern Minnesota, where the tribe owns just a tiny fraction of its reservation land. But just northwest of Leech Lake is Red Lake: one of the only reservations in the country where the tribe owns all of its land.

The word "reservation" implies "reserved" – as in, this land is reserved for Native Americans. But most reservation land actually isn't owned by tribes. Instead it's checkerboarded into private farmland, federal forests, summer camps, even resorts. That's true for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in northern Minnesota, where the tribe owns just a tiny fraction of its reservation land. But just northwest of Leech Lake is Red Lake: one of the only reservations in the country where the tribe owns all of its land. So what happened? In this episode, we take a road trip through Leech Lake and Red Lake to tell a tale of two tribal nations, the moments of choice that led them down very different paths, and what the future looks like from where they are now

We are batting with a short bench again this week, as Hahner is busy being an Electrician and Sobi is off doing some media work (aka practicing for Tourney Tuesday). Bart and Pinkalla dive into some of their recent events, including Bart spending quite a bit of time on the infamous Leech Lake as of late. What a cool body of water this sounds like! Then we are joined by a friend, Bailey Eigbrett, to dive into some of the coolest stuff we saw at iCast, as well as some stuff that just left our head scratching. It was a fun conversation about some of the new products in the industry. Then we dive into a little Tackle Warehouse 1v1 competition between Bailey and Bart, and finally we dive into Bailey's win down at Lake Eufaula, AL in a Hobie Kayak Series event. ~ Past The Barb Social Media ~ Email Us Questions and Feedback: pastthebarbpodcast@gmail.com Instagram: @pastthebarbpodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?... ~ Follow Us On Social Media ~ Adam Bartusek Instagram: @adambartusek Adam Bartusek Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/adambartbart...
