You can contact me here: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com What Happened: It was the summer of 2017. I was clocking miles like a long-haul trucker, repping campers for a living. My 7-year-old son called me out—said I'd promised to take him to Mount Rushmore. He was right. I'd driven past it more times than I could count, but I'd never stopped. So we hit the road. We camped our way across the country, father and son, a Black duo in a tiny pop-up trailer, parking it beside some seriously decked-out RV setups. We saw the sights, roasted marshmallows, and somewhere near Albuquerque, we spotted something we hadn't seen in thousands of miles: another Black family camping. My son lit up and said, “Hey Daddy! Black people!” That moment stuck. We talked to the family—Kimberly and crew—and she said something that flipped a switch in my brain: “Why don't you change that then?” That “why not you?” hit hard. By the time we were driving up the California coast, the name Black Folks Camp Too was born. Principle: Too often, we wait for permission—permission to belong, to show up, to start something meaningful. But sometimes, it takes seeing the gap with your own eyes, feeling the silence in certain spaces, to realize: you're the one who's supposed to fill it. And in business, just like in the outdoors, if you're only serving the same people the same way… you're gonna miss the fire. The campfire, that is. Transition: Most people think getting more folks into the outdoors is about better gear or cool photos on Instagram. But that's not it. The real challenge is the invitation—and the welcome. And too many companies still don't know why the diversity gap exists, so they don't know how to fix it. That's why a lot of businesses are struggling. Not because there's no market—but because they don't see who they're ignoring. And even when they do? They get hung up on the word Black in the name… instead of focusing on the unity behind the mission. That's why: That's why this episode matters. Earl Hunter isn't just talking about camping—he's talking about culture, connection, and cracking open an industry that's been too exclusive for too long. He's not asking for handouts or kumbayas. He's showing up with data, vision, and a real plan to shift the outdoor industry before it goes broke. Call to Action (PAS style): If you've ever felt like the outdoor world wasn't built for you—or your brand's been stuck serving the same crowd—it's time to tune in. Ignoring the invitation problem won't fix it. But this episode will give you a fresh lens and a fire to take action.
When Earl B. Hunter's son was seven years old, he took him on three-month, multi-state camping. It was a positive, life-changing experience for them both. But Earl was struck by the fact that over the entire trip, they saw just one other black family. As someone who was working in sales in the outdoor industry, Earl saw an opportunity and went on to found the for-profit company, Black Folks Camp Too. Historically, people of color have been underepresented in the RVing and outdoor industries. The reason may surprise you. And, Earl B. Hunter, Jr. is on a mission to change that. Earl created Black Folks Camp Too after a cross country RV trip with his son where they saw exactly one other black family RVing. This is changing, partly due to the work he's doing with the Unity Blaze campaign. The Unity Blaze Way is how campgrounds, outdoor industry brands, and RVers can initiate change to foster inclusiveness in camping, for everyone. It all begins with understanding why black people have traditionally avoided camping in the woods. Tune in to discover the facts behind generational fear, lack of inclusion, and the steps we can all take toward more inclusivity outdoors. Earl B. Hunter, Jr., the founder and president of Black Folks Camp Too, sits down with Adam for today's episode recorded at the Utah Tourism Conference. Earl discusses the importance of diversity and inclusion in the outdoor industry and details the educational opportunities his company offers. Later in the episode, Earl also gives some tips on public speaking and how he's been able to captivate his audience. "I always tell folks, this is no Kumbaya, this is an ROI, and ROI for us means Return on Inclusion. We'll get a true Return on Inclusion once we start to invite and welcome folks of color into these spaces that we don't know anything about. But before we can do that though, the industry has to be prepared, the industry has to be educated, the industry has to invite and activate. That's how we rock and roll." - Earl B. Earl B. Hunter, Jr is an experienced business leader across multiple industries. He has been widely recognized for his ebullient personality, hard work ethic and non-traditional approach to building relationships and closing deals. Mr. Hunter is driven by success and he always plays to win at whatever challenge is presented to him. Mr. Hunter is the Founder and President of Black Folks Camp Too — a marketing-driven business whose mission is to increase diversity in the out-door industry by making it easier, more interesting and more fun for Black folks to go camping. Black Folks Camp Too is a business that combines all of Mr. Hunter's previous sales leadership roles, but especially his most recent position as Vice President of Sales at Sylvansport. While at Sylvansport, Mr. Hunter grew the business from $1 million to $17.5 million in sales in 4 years, primarily by going on the road to build a network of over 100 RV dealers locations. In doing so, he put over 400,000 miles on the road across North America to work personally with dealership owners and sales teams at their outdoor/ RV events to “drive the business.” Mr. Hunter also developed a national sales relationship with Gander Outdoors/Camping World that helped establish a significant retail presence for the brand. The idea for Black Folks Camp Too began when Mr. Hunter was introduced to camping for the first time in 2015 while serving as Vice President of Sales for Sylvansport, one of the world's most innovative outdoor industry companies. The idea didn't fully form, however, until Mr. Hunter and his son, Dillon, went on an epic camping road trip across the USA and Canada. They traveled for 3 months visiting 49 campgrounds in 20 states/provinces and saw precisely ONE other Black family camping. At that moment, Mr. Hunter was on a mission. He began sharing stories of camping ad-ventures across his network of friends, family and followers — quickly becoming a top influencer for Black folks looking to give camping a try. KOA Campgrounds was so in-spired by the Hunters' trip, they invited Mr. Hunter and his son to the KOA headquarters in Billings, MT and wrote an article called A BUCKET LIST FATHER-SON ROAD TRIP which was posted on the KOA website. Mr. Hunter was also featured in a recent Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) article as an outdoor leader who is “Shaking Up the RV Industry” — highlighting Mr. Hunter's ideas for expanding marketing efforts to be more inclusive of the African-American community.Find our more information, and get involved, by visiting https://www.blackfolkscamptoo.com/
In this episode, Earl B. Hunter, Founder and President of Black Folks Camp Too — a marketing-driven business whose mission is to increase diversity in the out-door industry by making it easier, more interesting, and more fun for Black folks to go camping, joins us to share his story of adventure.
Earl B. Hunter Jr. is the founder of Black Folks Camp Too. His business focuses on raising the visibility and viability of underrepresented communities in the outdoors as well as helping brands understand what they’re doing right and how they can better connect with those communities. Why haven’t you seen more Black folks and people of color camping? Are brands doing enough to welcome all people — race, color, class — outdoors? There are complex answers and there are straight answers. Earl B. Hunter Jr. has straight answers. In addition to starting Black Folks Camp Too, Hunter created the Unity Blaze, a physical icon dedicated to making everyone feel more welcome and less alone outdoors. And while conversations around race and class seem to be happening, they often take place in highly controlled environments, riddled with buzzwords and politically correct clichés. Hunter’s approach is different. He believes straight, honest dialogue is the best way to reach the most people and create the most action. Understanding race, business, and human relations is complicated. But Hunter’s take on these topics will save you a lot of B.S. and help grow your understanding of what’s going on.
This week we'll be joined by several guests who will help us discuss diversity in the outdoor hospitality industry. Where are we at now, what can we improve, and what does the future hold for the ever-changing demographics of campers? We'll welcome Earl B. Hunter, Jr from Black Folks Camp Too, David & Eddie from Full-Time Gays, Lindsey Lerner who has traveled full-time and consulted for Sekr, and Al Berrios who helps coordinate outdoor-related activities for Outerthere.
Earl B. Hunter, Jr is an unapologetic business owner of an outdoor recreational and marketing company that is committed to get more black folks out in nature, and encourage our white allies to invite non white folks on their outdoor excursions. Earl worked in the recreational vehicle or RV industry as an executive for many years until he realized how people of color and particularly black folks are rarely to be seen purchasing recreational equipment or even enjoying outdoor spaces like parks. So he took matters into his own hands. And he created Black Folks Camp Too, which is based on one simple slogan, treat everyone everywhere equally. This is depicted in the Black Folks Camp Too Unity Blaze. In episode 9 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we will be discussing a hot topic in any part of the sustainability and zero-waste movement: single-use plastics. More specifically, we will be discussing the use of plastics on the production side of packaging with some limited discussion regarding consumer use of single-use plastics. To help me expand on this topic, I had the pleasure of talking to Steven Reinhold. Steven has worked within the outdoor industry for over a decade. He began his outdoor career with Big City Mountaineers' Summit for Someone program where he guided and recruited fundraising climbers whose efforts supported BCM's wilderness-mentoring programs. Steven has been an ambassador for multiple outdoor brands and currently serves as Backpacker Magazine's official Brand Ambassador. He created the online sensation #trashtag, a social media-based cleanup effort, which went viral in 2019 and has been used over 100 million times worldwide! Steven also founded The Appalachian Adventure Company, which has strong guiding-roots, but has since grown into a formidable Media/Marketing/Consulting company which works closely with organizations like Black Folks Camp Too, Leave No Trace, and the Southern Environmental Law Center. Memorial Day is coming, which will officially kick off summer for most Americans. Millions of people will spend their summer camping and hiking. But today’s guest sees a gap in one audience. Earl B. Hunter, Jr. founded Black Folks Camp Too to focus on opening up the outdoors to more people, specifically, the black community. I saw a news story about Earl and his mission last summer, and he was kind enough to respond to my cold inquiry about his mission. He was recently a guest on my other show, Gearbox Talk, to talk about hiking gear. And on this episode, we’re going to talk about the challenges Earl saw, and how he’s conquering those challenges with Black Folks Camp Too. Website: BlackFolksCampToo.com
In this episode I talk with Earl B. Hunter, Junior, the founder and president of Black Folks Camp Too, a company addressing the problem of the lack of diversity in the camping industry and in camping and the outdoors in general. Earl talks about the historical reasons that some Black folks don't feel comfortable in the woods, and how important feeling welcome is for all of us. Join us around the campfire. Find out more about Black Folks Camp Too here: blackfolkscamptoo.com, as well as on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
