Pass the Baton: Empowering Students in Music Education, a Podcast for Music Teachers
In episode 87, Kathryn and Theresa dive into the Critical Response Process (CRP) with Mallory Alekna, Assistant Professor of Music, Human Development, and Learning at Augsburg University. Mallory shares how this four-step feedback framework, developed by choreographer Liz Lerman, can transform music classrooms by fostering meaningful dialogue and empowering students to take ownership of their learning. Through CRP, students learn to articulate their observations, ask thoughtful questions, and engage in constructive, permission-based feedback. By integrating this process into music education, teachers can create more equitable, student-centered environments that encourage creativity, agency, and collaborative learning.Music teachers will leave this episode with practical strategies for implementing CRP in their classrooms, whether through peer feedback on student compositions, discussions about performance techniques, or even broader conversations about musicianship as an ongoing journey. If you're looking for ways to shift from a traditional top-down approach to one where students feel truly heard and valued, this episode is packed with insights and actionable takeaways to help you get started.Connect with Mallory and learn more: Contact MalloryLearn about the Critical Response Process Connect with an Expert Facilitator More about Pass the Baton:Website Join the Coffee Club Support Pass the Baton Amplify student voice with Exit Tickets for Self Reflection

An important question Christians often ask is, "Does the gift of prophecy still happen today?" We think this is an important issue that should be thought through carefully. In this video we argue that the gift of prophecy (and tongues as well, although that is for another video!) ceased in the early church. You can watch this message here.
In this episode Adam and Budi discuss their sixth choice for the Theatre of Others Book Club, Critical Response Process by Liz Lerman. Liz has spent the past four decades making her artistic research personal, funny, intellectually vivid, and up to the minute. Her choreography has examined everything from her days as a go-go dancer in 1974 to investigating the matters of our origins by putting dancers in the tunnels of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.A key aspect of her artistry is opening her process to everyone from shipbuilders to physicists, construction workers to ballerinas, resulting in both research and experiences that are participatory, relevant, urgent, and usable by others. She founded Liz Lerman Dance Exchange in 1976 and cultivated the company's unique multi-generational ensemble into a leading force in contemporary dance until 2011, when she handed the artistic leadership of the company over to the next generation of Dance Exchange artists. On Critical Response Process: Through the supportive structure of its four core steps, Critical Response Process combines the power of questions with the focus and challenge of informed dialogue. The Process offers makers an active role in the critique of their own work. It gives makers a way to rehearse the connections they seek when art meets it audience or a product meets its purpose.Critical Response Process instills ways of thinking, communicating and being that enhance all kinds of human interactions, from coaching to community dialogue, from artistic collaboration to family conversations. In use for over 25 years, Critical Response Process has been embraced by art makers, educators, scientists, and theater companies, dance departments, orchestras, laboratories, conservatories, museums, universities, corporations, and kindergartens.Support the showIf you enjoyed this week´s podcast, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts. On this week's episode of Not A Bomb, the guys do a complete 180 from last week and discuss one of the most thought-provoking love story films - The Fountain. Coming six years after Requiem for a Dream, Aronofsky effortlessly creates a heartbreaking romance between Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. This film is too philosophical for a two-person podcast, so the guys welcome Sammy from the GGTMC back to the show. Listen as the gang spoils the heck out of this film and discusses the deep, philosophical subtext within each frame. Don't worry! This episode isn't just an academic deliberation on man's mortality. They also derail the conversation with thoughts on white tree sap, intimate sex scenes in bathtubs that cause water damage to hardwood floors, “naturalistic upper male nudity”, and so much more.Timestamps: Intro - (1:35), Box Office Response and Critical Response - (2:52), People Involved - (11:21), Production and Development - (32:15), Commerical Break - (48:06), The Fountain Discussion - (50:05), Is it a Bomb? - (98:50), and Outro - (107:00)The Fountain is directed by Darren Aronofsky and stars Hugh Jackson Rachel Weisz, and Ellen Burstyn. If you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com or Contact Us - here. Welcome back to Not A Bomb, the podcast that re-examines some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history! This week, the guys are excited to welcome Mike McGranaghan, friend of the show and online film critic from The Aisle Seat. For this episode, the gang travels to Valkenvania and tackles one of the weirdest comedies…or maybe horror movies… ever made - Nothing but Trouble. The movie started out as a passion project for Dan Akroyd after he went to a screening of Hellraiser. However, Nothing but Trouble was thrown into “Mr. Bonestripper” by the critics and failed to recoup its $45 million budget. Mike provides some much-needed context as Troy and Brad try to wrap their heads around the plot and all the zany, creepy characters.Timestamps: Intro - (1:25), 5 Burning Questions - (7:15), Box Office Results and Critical Response - (13:49), People Involved - (16:27), Production and Development - (36:40), Commercial Break - (44:04), Nothing but Trouble Discussion - (46:15), Is it a Bomb? - (70:20), and Outro - (83:42)Nothing but Trouble is directed by Dan Akroyd and stars Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, and Demi Moore.Mike McGranaghan, is a member of the Critics Choice Association and the Online Film Critics Society. Come on, ride the train (choo choo ride), and ride it (woo woo) (choo choo ride)! On this episode of Not A Bomb podcast, the guys welcome back friend of the podcast, Nate, to discuss 1995's buddy action comedy - Money Train. Following the success of White Men Can't Jump, studios hoped to replicate the box office return by reuniting Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson. The resulting film was 1995's Money Train. Sadly, the film failed to make a White Men Can't Jump sized impact and was both a financial and critical failure. Sure, Money Train might not be White Men Can't Jump quality but were audiences and critics wrong about the movie? Is a 1995 Jennifer Lopez worth the price of admission? Does the chemistry of Snipes and Harrelson elevate a mediocre script? Download this week's episode and find out. As a bonus, you get to hear the gang's thoughts on White Men Can't Jump. Welcome to Season 4 of Not A Bomb, the podcast that reexamines some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history! This week, the guys tackle the criminally underseen American Western from 2007 (possibly one of the greatest years in cinema) - The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Based on the book of the same name, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, chronicles…you guessed it…the assassination of Jesse James. Even with its modest budget, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford failed to recoup its production budget and was only given a very limited theatrical release. Some critics, however, thought it was one of the best films of the year and this little seen Western received two academy award nominations. Listen as Troy and Brad discuss modern mob films, marvel at Roger Deakins, and decide if this is one of the best films of the last few decades. Timestamps: Intro - (1:10), Box Office Results and Critical Response - (5:14), People Involved - (14:09), Production and Development - (20:49), Why did it bomb? - (27:03), Commercial Break - (35:24), The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Discussion - (37:27), RoboReviewer1000 - (86:23), Is it a Bomb? - (89:40), Listener Feed - (95:12), and Outro - (102:32)The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is directed by Andrew Dominik and stars Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Shephard, Mary-Louise Parker, Paul Schneider, Jeremy Renner, Zooey Deschanel, and Sam Rockwell. On this very special episode of Not A Bomb, the gang celebrates their three-year anniversary with a show dedicated to all thing's grindhouse cinema. To cap it off, the guys dive deep into 2007's epic theatrical bomb - Grindhouse. We couldn't celebrate this anniversary without some help. So, we asked Sammy, “The Godfather of Grindhouse,” to join us and puts his knowledge on display. Released as an over three-hour experience, Grindhouse featured two full length films - Planet Terror and Death Proof from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. Also, various other directors contributed fake move trailers to capture the traditional grindhouse theatrical experience. Sadly, this unique film experience flopped at the box office and prevented audiences from getting another experiment like Grindhouse for a long time. Before the timestamps, we have one last note. We at Not A Bomb thank you for your support over the past three years! This community is fantastic and we look forward to exploring more epic movie bombs with all of you.Timestamps: Intro - (2:15), Grindhouse Cinema talk - (5:32), Grindhouse Film origin story - (20:20), Box Office Results and Critical Response - (24:57), Why Did it Bomb? - (28:49), Planet Terror Key People - (39:53), Planet Terror Discussion - (42:16), Commercial Break - (69:04), Grindhouse Trailer Talk - (71:44), Death Proof Key People - (75:10), Death Proof Discussion - (79:04), Is it a Bomb? - (110;37), RoboReviewer1000 - (118:00), Shoutouts! - (122:25), and Outro - (132:09)Planet Terror is directed by Robert Rodriguez and stars Rose McGowan, Freddy Rodruguez, Josh Brolin, Marley Shelton, Jeff Fahey, Micheal Biehn, Bruce Willis, Naveen Andrews, Fergie, Tom Savini, Julio Oscar Mechoso, Nicky Katt, Michael Parks, and Quentin TarantinoDeath Proof is directed by Quentin Tarantino and stars Kurt Russell, Zoe Bell, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito, Sydney Tamilia Poitier, Tracie Thoms, Rose McGowan, Jordan Lann, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Michael Parks, Quentin Tarantino, James Parks, and Jonathan LoughranIf you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com or Contact Us - here. On this very religious episode of Not A Bomb, the gang welcomes back Jose from Watch/Skip+ to discuss Wiliam Peter Blatty's 1980 psychological drama - The Ninth Configuration. Known as the second installment in Blatty's “Fatih Trilogy”, The Ninth Configuration examines the the human psyche, faith, insanity and the “mystery of goodness” in man. The film takes big swings at some big topics, but do they all hit? Does the strong cast save The Ninth Configuration from being too talky and pretentious? And what the heck is up with that bar scene in the third act? All hail the Patron Saint of Not A Bomb - Dolph Lundgren! The most reviewed action star on the podcast!Welcome back to another exciting episode of Not A Bomb. This is the podcast where we go back and reexamine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. On this week's episode, the guys are pleased to welcome back Zo from the Back Look Cinema Podcast to discuss 1987's superhero film - Masters of the Universe. Known as one of the films that bankrupted The Cannon Group, Masters of the Universe was meant to rejuvenate the franchise and increase toy sales. However, the poor critical reception and bad business decisions from Mattel did more damage than Skeletor riding on Panthor through Eternia. The film bombed and the kiddos stopped buying the action figures. Lots of great topics this episode including grown men collecting toys and the best Cannon films of the 80's. This week, the guys are so excited to have Amy and Freddy Morris from the longest running horror podcast of all time - Night of the Living Podcast. If you have some of the foremost experts on horror on your show, you have to jump into the zombie realm and that's actually what we did! This week, the gang tackles the 1988 buddy cop action zombie comedy film - Dead Heat. As one of the more insane buddy cop films, Dead Heat failed to make an impact upon release with both audiences and critics. The movie fell short of expectations forcing the studio to cancel the planned sequel. Does Dead Heat deserve a second look? Are pee and poop jokes funny when you're in your 40's? Welcome back to another exciting episode of Not A Bomb. This is the podcast where we go back and reexamine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. On this week's episode, the guys are joined by friend of the show and TV nerd, John Nance, to discuss 1992's fantasy/comedy, Stay Tuned. A self-referential, meta comedy, Stay Tuned finds a couple being sucked into their television and must survive 24 hours of parody tv/movie stations. Stay Tuned released to mixed reviews and very light box office results. On this very special edition of Not A Bomb, the guys celebrate 150 episodes of the podcast with a double feature starring the one, the only - Andrew Dice Clay. First up is the 1990's action comedy mystery film, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. Here, we find the Diceman starring as the ”The Rock N' Roll Detective” who gets into all the hottest clubs and dates all the hottest women while solving cases within the music industry. Critically panned and a financial flop, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane failed to capitalize on the success of Andrew Dice Clay who had just broken attendance records that same year at Madison Square Garden. If that wasn't enough, the guys tackle 1993's romantic comedy (?), Brainsmasher…A Love Story. Let's see, this one has Teri Hatcher, goofy ninjas who aren't really ninjas, and a lot of similar plot points found in Ford Fairlane. We at Not A Bomb thank you for listening and helping us reach 150 episodes. We couldn't have done it without your support! Welcome back film fans to the best movie podcast about big movie bombs! As 2022 comes to an end, so does our lookback on some of the biggest bombs of this year. For our final episode, the podcast travels to stupid city for the science fiction disaster film - Moonfall. If we are destroying the Earth in some silly manner, it's gotta be a Roland Emmerich film! How silly is this latest entry from the master of disaster? The Moon, which is a mega-structure built by aliens, is crashing into the Earth because another set of aliens doesn't like us.
