With the push for green energy, governments around the world have pushed for (and passed) subsidies for so-called “renewable” energy like wind and solar. The US passed large subsidies of this kind under the Biden Administration's Inflation Reduction Act, passed in 2022. But these policies do not have the effect of creating long-term stability in the American energy grid. Hello! This is Maddie Rose Hills, host of The Mater Podcast. This week's episode is a little different, and a lot shorter! I have just got back from a week-long Research Residency at West Dean School of Arts, Craft, Design and Conservation. What is a research residency? Well it can really be anything - but for me it meant wandering around the school, meeting people from lots of different departments, and talking with them about what attracted them to the craft and materials that they were studying or teaching. I wrote a diary while down there and have put together a selection of the thoughts here. This text can be read on the Mater website: https://mater.digital/stories/a-research-residency-at-west-dean/Or listened to here on the podcast platformI will also share more images on the Mater Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mater________/?hl=enFind out more about West Dean: https://www.westdean.ac.uk/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/westdeancollege/?hl=enWest Dean Fine Art on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/westdeanfineart/?hl=enMore about West Dean: 'Our schools of arts, design and conservation offer a uniquely broad range of world-leading courses. At the heart of all we do, is our belief that 'making' makes our lives better. We celebrate the intrinsic value of work that has been hand-made by artists and artisans, and challenge the assumption that mass-produced must be the only way because, across the world, the maker movement is growing.' Interview by Kris PetersFifty years of servitude in any industry is a great achievement, but fifty years in the music industry is something special. In an industry that rewards only when you have something of value to offer, bands are churned through the machine at a rapid rate of knots. Yesterday's heroes can quickly become tomorrow's nobodies with everything from changing fashions to styles to bad press being an avenue for failure.Australian rockers Radio Birdman are one of the few bands to not only survive half a century in the music industry but somewhat thrive as well.Radio Birdman were one of the first Australian bands to harness the punk rock attitude that swept through Britain, doing things their way no matter the consequences. They are one of those bands that as soon as you listen to their music you get the "ah, that's who sung it" feels, with an infectious and flippant brand of music showcasing all the hallmarks and foundations of great Aussie rock.To celebrate the occasion, Radio Birdman will hit the road for the Birdman 5-0 Tour, starting June 21, with fellow Australian icons Hard-Ons along for the ride.HEAVY caught up with founding member and guitarist Deniz Tek to take a trip down memory lane. We start by asking if Australia is ready for the finale."The venues that we're playing are essentially the same venues we played on the last tour," he began, "and the last couple of tours. The last time we went around Australia was just before the pandemic in 2019, and it's basically the same venues. We prefer to play two to three shows in a smaller club rather than one big show at the Enmore or the Palace or something like that. It's better for us to play in smaller places."It's a bittersweet tour, celebrating 50 years of the band, but also serving as a swansong, so we ask Deniz how long the band has known they would be ticking both things off at the same time."Just since November," he replied. "We hadn't really talked about it until then, but I was back in Australia for my daughters wedding and the band got together socially, and we talked it over and thought it might be a good idea."In the full interview we take a moment to reflect on what a great achievement 50 years is, the success of presale tickets, limiting the shows and why, what fans can expect, what the band expects from their crowds, the emotion that will surround the last ever show at the Manning Bar in Sydney on July 7, having Hard-Ons as support, Radio Birdman's legendary outsider status and how well it fits, being the underdog, what he has achieved personally and musically over his career, what's left for him to achieve, the band logo and some insights into its origin, his top three commandments of rock and more.
In this latest episode of the Triple M gig review, join Chris as we delve into the electrifying performance of Grinspoon at the Enmore Theatre. After a lengthy hiatus, Grinspoon returned to the stage with their 'Easy Detention' tour, captivating the audience with their signature rock energy and a set list that spans their illustrious 28-year career. From Phil Jamieson's iconic jet-black hair to the band's slightly grayer look, Grinspoon proved they've still got it, delivering hit after hit, including classics like 'Lost Control,' 'Chemical Heart,' and 'Hard Act To Follow.' With a career stretching back to 1995, Grinspoon has consistently been a powerhouse in Australian rock music, and their performance at the Enmore was no exception. The 21-song set list was a journey through the band's history, pleasing long-time fans and newcomers alike. Chris's review not only highlights the band's enduring talent but also offers insights into the electrifying atmosphere of the night. For those who couldn't be there, this episode is your backstage pass to one of Australia's finest rock acts.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Experience the potent mixture of tracks from Midland's rich discography spanning three albums and an EP, augmented with iconic covers from artists like Thin Lizzy, Glen Campbell, and Tom Petty. With the audience comfortably seated and an intentional intermission dividing the 'Tommy' album's sides A & B, it was clear this wasn't just another concert. Enter the dazzling Hayley Mary of the Jezabels and Sarah McLeod from Superjesus, whose guest appearances were nothing short of electric. As the chords resonated, Tim Rogers, the charismatic frontman of You Am I, sprinkled the evening with tales - from detailed insights into Tommy's evocative storyline to cheeky and heartfelt anecdotes about his bandmates and the journey they've shared. Etienne Salborn is the founder of SINA (the Social Innovation Academy), a talent campus in Uganda. He also serves as a lecturer for social entrepreneurship at the Management Center Innsbruck and the ESCP Business School, resource person for the Asian Productivity Organization and facilitator for the ChangemakerXchange. His expertise and leadership have earned him recognition as an “AACSB Influential Leader 2021” and he was named an Innovation Ecosystem Builder Fellow by MIT D-lab in 2018.The Berlin-born social entrepreneur has had quite the life journey since taking off for Uganda at age 18 for a volunteering community service (an option to eschew the German military service). In his conversation with Anne, he tells her about how he set up his first and then second non-profit organisations after he found his life's mission: to support the empowerment of marginalised youth in rural Uganda. We discuss his very special master's program in Austria, called Peace, Development, Security and International Conflict Transformation, and how it led him into a journey of self-discovery and experiential learning (which included simulation of a conflict war zone as well as mindfulness, meditation and contemplation on Austria's mountains in minus 27 degree Celsius).Etienne explains how SINA came to be, what three pillars underpin the project and how young students, or SINA scholars, are onboarded and grow their roles within the community, built as a self-organised system that runs on what the concept of ‘freesponsibility' (freedom + responsibility). With people living and working in the community, Etienne explains how they have used models from Nonviolent Communication, holacracy, and his master's program facilitation tools to help navigate change, conflict and feedback — something of a challenge in a flat structure of 60+ individuals. SINA's goal is to help young people unleash their potential, create their own change and build their own social enterprises. Etienne shares how SINA has grown into a replicable model, building a new generation of social entrepreneurs who are solving challenges for society and the environment. With more than 12 communities across Uganda and other African countries, Etienne talks about what's next, how we can support, engage with and even visit SINA, and why we should all explore the power of community. Reposting a classic episode while we take a few weeks off to take a breath and record. Former Deputy Prime Minister, long-serving parliamentarian and occasional DJ Anthony Albanese MP joins me on the show to talk about his favorite album by one of his favorite artists - “The Good Son” (1990) by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. We talk about the origins of his Nick Cave fandom, seeing him live with the Birthday Party and later with the Bad Seeds, how this album represents a period of Cave in transition, why ‘The Ship Song' ended up on his playlist when he guest hosted Rage and which Nick Cave song got people moving in his recent DJ set. Also, we talk about why his electorate has Australia's best concert venue (the Enmore), the advantages of going to gigs in Canberra, why bad governments breed good music, protest songs and the Reclink Community Cup.

Marina Otero Verzier is an architect, researcher and curator, who is also the current Head of the MA in Social Design program at Design Academy Eindhoven. Until very recently, she was the director of research at the Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. Her work touches on many socio-political and environmental dimensions of design and cultural production; as well as the emergence of new paradigms for institutions. Together with Marina we unpack what designing the social might mean, and we explore the outer reaches of architectural research; both in the political and ecological realms. I think her particular mix of cautious optimism and her introspective openness allows us to reflect on how culture can be put to work, both in everyday life and in the sites of knowledge production, whether it's the museum, the school, or the archive.EPISODE NOTES & LINKSMarina Otero Verzier is an architect. Canon has the same root as Kanun, or Qanun, which means the rule, or the law. So in a way, these works become unquestionable. Cartesian Grid refers to grids often used in architecture as the basis for organizing spatial form, as composed of squares (or cubes) aligned with the Cartesian coordinate axes. Cartesian coordinate axes exist in a coordinate system that specifies each point uniquely by a pair of numerical coordinates, which are the signed distances to the point from two fixed perpendicular oriented lines, measured in the same unit of length. This is not your soul mate How we were raised as kids, how consistent our parents (or caretakers) were, and how safe and loved we felt when we were young can shape our attachment style during our adulthood. Tracey Crossley walks us through secure and insecure attachments in relationships and how our upbringing plays out in our intimate relationships as adults. Insecure and secure attachments Our relationship with our caretakers from the time we are born greatly affects our having either a secure or insecure attachment with other people in our adulthood. Secure attachment starts when the child trusts the caretakers and feels an emotional bond with them. They don't worry that if you leave the room you're not coming back. On the other hand, if there is insecure attachment, the child can have different reactions and could become avoidant. These experiences as kids, we bring with us to adulthood. How does insecure attachment show up? It shows up in a variety of ways, but many people don't realize where it's coming from. Naturally, deep down, all of us want to be securely attached and feel loved. But our conditioning says something different, so we seek what we know. We repeat the same sort of familiar feeling and situation that we had as a child. It affects how we feel and how we act. This sometimes led to confusion and even attracting dysfunctional relationships. Even though we want something different, part of us wants the familiar, which doesn't serve us so well. Do we have a soulmate? People would be looking for a unicorn when they look for their soulmate. People who are securely attached do not say they found their soulmate. They usually are just happy that being with their partner feels good and there is no need to give it a label. When you do not have that sense of security, that's when you tend to come up with labels as though it's some sort of magical thing that's going to happen. The idea of happiness and satisfaction about finding your soulmate is a moment in time and not related to reality. It's just about the fantasy you have about what the other person is bringing to you and how it will make you feel. How do insecurely attached people respond to sex vs securely attached people? Insecurely attached people usually perform acrobatics in the bedroom. They're all about how great they are at sex and that's like their secret weapon. They're going to hook you through sex and do whatever it takes to hold on to you, so you don't go away. Very strong feelings of desperation are usually involved in insecurely attached people. Meanwhile, securely attached relationships are not so much about just sex but how you are creating intimacy. Sex is a part of the relationship, but it is not the whole relationship, and the intimacy comes from emotions rather than the physicality. Anxiety in relationships Tracey Crossley paints a picture of anxious-avoidant, anxious and avoidant people and how they react whenever they are in a relationship, or lack thereof. She stresses that one big thing missing in a healthy relationship is anxiety. Instead, there should always be progression. Moreover, do not dwell in a fantasy land looking for that perfect partner. Always do a reality check, be in the moment and deal with all the disappointments it could bring rather than living in fantasy and prolonging your agony. Biography Tracy Crossley is a behavioral relationship expert, author, and podcast host, who specializes in treating individuals with unhealthy life and relationship patterns. Tracy helps clients transform, impostor syndrome, insecure attachment, negative belief systems, breaking the cycle of narcissistic damage, destructive self-talk, and more. With a background in psychology, an innate emotional intuition, which draws from her own personal experience, Tracy shows her clients how to permanently change the repetition of the unhealthy, unhappy and unfulfilled cycles personally and professionally. Tracy's popular weekly mental health podcast, Freedom from Attachment: Living Fulfilled, Happy and in Love offers listeners a different perspective when it comes to breaking the cycle of unhealthy behaviors that keep them stuck repeating pain-inducing actions on auto-pilot. The podcast addresses folks who want to deal with their emotional baggage and get unstuck, happy, and have a clear mindset. She also has a monthly podcast called Moving On, where she invites guests to speak about their life experience in overcoming difficult times to be successful and happy in their lives. We kick off the show with Gay Icons or Gaycons. Then the Gaycon herself Dannii Minogue gave us a call ahead of this weekend's Mardi Gras celebrations. Then we ask what you're addicted to after Joel enjoyed a morning sky dive. Then what went down at the gig? The floor of the Enmore theatre collapsed last night. We cover some Neighbours afterparty news in the Glossy's. Then the boys hop in the Jacuzzi and chat about Celine Dion. They go off the rails a touch and giveaway some Foo Fighters tickets as well as a Smeg fridge. Just radio tings. Then we ask what you've been paid to do!
