And it was only after Silvio finally got to the top of the mountain that he realized just how easy it was to fall over the edge. With a wife and kids, dysfunctional family business obligations, and an out-of-control social life all pulling him in conflicting paths, Silvio struggled keep the empire moving forward without detection from law enforcement. But when he was introduced to a Colombian cocaine princess with aspirations to become a model, he saw an opportunity to expand the family's profit margins to unimaginable heights and risked it all despite the collision course with disaster he saw right before him.Toby Rogers is an award winning author and investigative journalist. He has written for the New York Times, New York Post, Village Voice, High Times, Clamor Magazine, and Houston's Public News. Cannabis has played a significant role in Nepal's culture, economy, and history, yet its legacy remains largely untold. In this episode, we sit down with Nabin Bibhas to uncover the fascinating history of cannabis in Nepal, from its traditional use as Bhangu to its transformation into Ganja. We explore how hemp agriculture in Nepal was once an integral part of rural livelihoods, providing fiber for hemp weaving, oil for medicine, and even food. Nabin Bibhas shares insights on how Maoists and the cannabis trade were linked during the insurgency, raising the question: Did Maoists sell cannabis to buy weapons? We also discuss the Maoist insurgency in Nepal and how cannabis was both a survival tool and a political element. Additionally, we take a deep dive into Thabang village, where police are not allowed to interfere with cannabis and beef culture, reflecting the unique legal and social perspectives in Nepal. We also discuss how capitalism ruined Nepal's hemp industry, leading to the decline of hemp textiles and traditional uses of cannabis. With growing conversations around Nepal cannabis legalization, will we see a revival of cannabis farming in Nepal? Join us as we explore the rich history, political influence, and future potential of this sacred plant.

Forget the vampire tropes this week; let's hallucinate and appreciate. Horror scholar Lea Anderson (Fangoria, Shudder) is here to look deep into 1973's "Ganja & Hess" (and honestly, help me understand it). This beguiling Black vampire story stars Marlene Clark and Duane Jones as a pair of cursed, blood-craving immortals reckoning with the beauty and horror of forever togetherness. We break down ‘70s movie blood, this film's complex take on theology, and why Marlene Clark's performance “is everything” to Lea.
Today, this “Vampires of America” kick lifts the coffin lid on the Blaxploitation era and 1972's "Blacula." I'm thrilled to be joined by Odie Henderson, author of “Black Caesars and Foxy Cleopatras” and film critic for The Boston Globe. We analyze William Marshall's Shakespearean performance as Blacula, speculate on why the backhand is his weapon of choice, and explore the key film history around “Dracula's soul brother.” I strongly recommend both Odie's book and his criticism: https://store.abramsbooks.com/products/black-caesars-and-foxy-cleopatras “Ganja & Hess” (1973) next week!
Keshawn Warner of Dazed Cannabis and Emiliano Cuellar of Ganja Gang detailed their blockchain-based inventory management system, designed to combat revenue loss and enhance compliance in cannabis dispensaries. Their system utilizes smart contracts linked to inventory, preventing unauthorized sales and reducing human error. They emphasized the real-world utility of their project, moving beyond traditional NFT applications by providing tangible value and focusing on compliance. Keshawn also highlighted the use of zero-knowledge proofs for age verification, ensuring consumer privacy and anonymity. They also discussed blockchain's potential to facilitate the transition of legacy operators into the legal market, enhancing efficiency and creating a safer environment for consumers. EPISODE #445-- Once more into the breech for Black History Month. Today Cruz and James attempt to understand the impressionistic, indie cult horror classic, GANJA & HESS from 1973. We also mourn the passing of Gene Hackman, talking about THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1971), as well as Kon Ichikawa's THE BURMESE HARP (Cruz has been on an Ichikawa kick-- we can't blame him). This is also our last film fro Black History Month, so we hope we did okay by the films, if nothing else. Join the cause at Patreon.com/Quality. It's been promised for a long time, but as it's episode 420, it makes sense for Paul and Eli to finally tackle a topic that celebrates the joy and pain of enjoying weed. Whatever you call it, Weed. Marijuana. Bud. Grass. Ganja. Nug. Reefer. Mary Jane. Blunt. Dank. Hashish. Doobie. Pot, CheapShow is talking about it. It's no secret that the Cheap Chaps enjoy smoking weed, but in this slightly different episode, they're going to talk about their relationship and personal history with it. The literal highs and cringe inducing lows. From first and worst experiences, to tangents, anecdotes and facts – CheapShow is surprisingly candid this week, but also reassuringly stupid too. Come along with CheapShow for an episode that will definitely go up in smoke before the mind wobbling finale. Beware the Fakir's Noose! Important: This episode tackles the topic of drugs, personal use and honest, personal opinions on cannabis. We not celebrating or condemning it, just talking about our own experiences. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss one of the greatest romantic poets in Persian literature. Nizami Ganjavi (c1141–1209) is was born in the city of Ganja in what is now Azerbaijan and his popularity soon spread throughout the Persian-speaking lands and beyond. Nizami is best known for his Khamsa, a set of five epic poems that contains a famous retelling of the tragic love story of King Khosrow II (c570-628) and the Christian princess Shirin (unknown-628) and the legend of Layla and Majnun. Not only did he write romances: his poetry also displays a dazzling knowledge of philosophy, astronomy, botany and the life of Alexander the Great. With Christine van Ruymbeke Professor of Persian Literature and Culture at the University of CambridgeNarguess Farzad Senior Lecturer in Persian Studies at SOAS, University of LondonAndDominic Parviz Brookshaw Professor of Persian Literature and Iranian Culture at the University of OxfordProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:Laurence Binyon, The Poems of Nizami (The Studio Limited, 1928)Barbara Brend, Treasures of Herat: Two Manuscripts of the Khamsah of Nizami in the British Library (Gingko, 2020)Barbara Brend, The Emperor Akbar's Khamsa of Nizami (British Library, 1995)J-C.
