After being gone for several months, Murderous Roots is returning! The lives of Denise and Zelda got hectic. This is particularly true for Denise who not only researches the trees but also produces the podcast. Both Denise and Zelda have missed sharing stories about the lives and family histories of their subjects. They hope you join them as they kick things off again next week!
This podcast is a little different than our others because we noticed a theme in many of our interviews on the importance of mentoring. We invited Denise Higdon, CEO of Work Site Consultants and James Kelley, Partner-Operations and Business Development at the KGR Group to join us and mentor Extraordinaire, Dr. Mary McDonald to share their thoughts on mentoring. Both Denise and James participate in the Society of Entrepreneurs mentoring group, the Insights group. We hope that you will enjoy hearing about this program and what it means to the participants. Links to items mentioned in the interview: Worksite Consultants KGR Group MCD Partners Society of Entrepreneurs Insights Group “A mentor is someone who allows you to know that no matter how dark the night, in the morning joy will come. A mentor is someone who allows you to see the higher part of yourself when sometimes it becomes hidden to your own view.” Oprah Winfrey
Denise talks to Joshua Cascade, a former private equity investor with over 25 years of industry experience. Cascade has led or co-led leveraged buyout transactions representing over $2 billion in aggregate acquisition value. These days you'll find him back on campus, educating the next generation of MBA candidates at the Yale School of Management and undergraduate business students at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. Having rubbed elbows with thousands of founders and CEOs in 48 states, he's proud to have learned so much from such a diverse group of people. His experience—and his mistakes—along the way have taught him the importance of knowing what your blind spots are. When he was starting out, his answer to overcoming adversity was to put his head down and work harder. Now he asks himself, “Am I being too risk averse? Am I making this decision out of fear?” Cascade is happy to be back in his home state of Michigan, and happy to be teaching for both Yale and his alma mater, University of Michigan. The wisdom he would offer his younger self is the same he offers his students. Slow down. Embrace the “I don't know.” Apart from crediting his wife as the real secret to his confidence, he stresses having an open mind and humility. Learn before you leap. Cascade is super impressed by his students' curiosity and intelligence. The next generation is incredibly data savvy and their ability to gather better information faster will undoubtedly be a game changer. Not surprisingly his favorite Detroit moments are sports related. With the city's sports teams getting better and better, much like the revival of the city itself, he believes when one of those teams wins a championship again, the party will take to Detroit's downtown streets like never before. Both Denise and he agree, that is something to look forward to. *** Joshua Cascade is a former private equity investor with over 25 years of industry experience, most recently as a Managing Partner at Wellspring Capital. Prior to Wellspring, Cascade was a member of the investment team at Odyssey Investment Partners. He began his career at The Blackstone Group in 1994, after earning an undergraduate bachelor's degree in business administration at the University of Michigan. Since 2018, Cascade has been teaching a private equity course to MBA candidates at the Yale School of Management and undergraduate business students at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. He resides in Michigan with his wife and daughters. Denise Ilitch, an owner of Ilitch Family Companies and President of Ilitch Enterprises, has been a part of Detroit's business and philanthropic community for over 40 years. As a mother, lawyer, entrepreneur, devoted community servant and tireless advocate for women and children, she learned early, from her father, that everyone is worthy of contributing to the world. Her passion for affordable, accessible, quality education stems from her own experience as a first-generation student, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she currently serves on the Board of Regents, and a law degree from the University of Detroit Law School. Hello friends! Today we welcome a dynamic duo to the show, Denise Trabona and Adam Harmetz of Microsoft's SharePoint team, and they take us through the extraordinary 10 + year evolution of SharePoint from the frustratingly chaotic farms of the past to the streamlined, user-friendly UX of the future. Both Denise and Adam were part of the historical transformation from a lumbering, haphazard platform to a sexy platform showpiece. This evolution has earned SharePoint the record for the fastest Microsoft product to reach a billion in revenue. In its current incarnation, end-user design has reached its pinnacle. But that isn't all, not only has SharePoint evolved, but its reach has also expanded. Statistically, nearly 1 in 10 developers in the world have coded on top of SharePoint, which is a phenomenal statistic. Even more incredible is the fact that if you search LinkedIn, approximately 1.6 million people list SharePoint as a skill on their resume or profile. This makes it self-evident that SharePoint has moved from a state of potential complexity implosion to near utopia. Also in this episode, Rob asks the questions that so many of us have wanted to ask and we hear it from the experts, the difference between SharePoint and OneDrive has to do with the expected use case. OneDrive is more person and SharePoint is, well, shared. Finally, this episode becomes an ad-hoc SharePoint therapy session for our own host, Rob Collie as he airs his pent-up frustrations and embraces the newer, better, faster SharePoint. You almost have to ask yourself if this SharePoint will finally tempt Rob away from Dropbox?? On today's episode, Erin talks to sisters Denise and Andrea, whose dad Michael See blew up their lives when he suddenly disappeared from the family home in Singapore in 2003, having secretly fleeced millions over the years from their mother, grandfather, and other family members, and mysteriously fled to China, never to be seen again. But to say that Michael See was a con artist diminishes the word “artist”—his was more of a grift born of convenience, hubris, and a confounding desire to be caught, as he ultimately kept his own receipts and the details of his double life for everyone to find. Both Denise and Andrea were in their 20s when he disappeared; listen as they share how their father's example affected their relationships with their now husbands and kids, and how to move on when Dad keeps calling to remind you he left. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tell-me-about-your-father/support

Today I catch up with Denise Cloughley: author, former inmate at Capri Hospital and now a woman on a mission to show others that the past does not equal the future. I met Denise first on a Friday in March 2014. We were both starting the holiday of a lifetime. 27000 nzd for 1 month full board at Capri Hospital. We were both broken people but had done extensive research into alcohol. As good alcoholics do, we quickly compared notes. Who has the higher liver function tests, where is the best place to hide a bottle. Fun stuff! Fast forward 2503 days. Both Denise and I live lives so beautiful that yesterday becomes jealous of today. We both have found the power to love ourselves, something we both considered impossible. Denise has written this book for one simple reason - to show that the past does not equal the future. She has done so in a beautiful way. The book is well written and its content is honest and incredibly humbling. If you struggle with addiction or have a loved one who does, read this book. It is a journal of hope and shows that with the right help, and willingness of the patient, miracles are not only possible but in fact to be expected. If you want learn more about living a fantastic life after alcohol, check out my book! https://www.amazon.com/My-Steps-Sobri... Wait, there is more!!! In this episode of Bibliophiles Anonymous, Denise and Jess kick off their read of the Infernal Devices trilogy by Cassandra Clare, starting with book one, Clockwork Angel. A prequel to the Mortal Instruments series, the Infernal Devices series follows Shadowhunters living in Victorian England. We meet Tessa Gray, a young American going to live with her brother when she is captured by a pair of women called the Dark Sisters. While in their care, she is forced to reveal the strange power that she has - the ability to shapeshift into different people - a power that she herself didn't know that she had. According to the Sisters, she is to be groomed as the bride of their leader, a mysterious figure known only as "the Magister." Tessa is rescued by two Shadowhunters, Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs, who take her to the Institute. There, Tessa begins the process of trying to discover what she is and to solve the mystery of what really happened to her brother. Both Denise and Jess are big fans of Cassandra Clare and, while they've both started this trilogy in the past, neither one of them has actually finished it. Jess admits that these books include yet another one of her fictional crushes, one Will Herondale. Other well-known characters from the Mortal Instruments make appearances as well, like the warlock Magnus Bane and the vampire Camille Belacort. Some things mentioned in the show: Adagio Teas - Do you enjoy a good cup of tea? How about blends dedicated to your favorite fandom! Jess wholeheartedly endorses Adagio for all your tea needs.
