Matt Crawford speaks with author Nolan Higdon and his and Dr. Allison Butler's book, Surveillance Education: Navigating the Conspicuous Absence of Privacy in Schools. In our era of surveillance capitalism, digital media technologies are ever more intertwined into the educational process. Schools are presented with digital technologies as tools of convenience for gathering and grading student work, as tools of support to foster a more equitable learning environment, and as tools of safety for predicting or preventing violence or monitoring mental, emotional, and physical health. Despite a dearth of evidence to confirm their effectiveness, digital data collection and tracking is often presented as a way to improve educational outcomes and safety. This book challenges these fallacious assumptions and argues that the use of digital media technologies has caused great harm to students by subjecting them to oppressive levels of surveillance, impinging upon their right to privacy, and harvesting their personal data on behalf of Big-Tech. In doing so, the authors draw upon interviews from K–12 and higher education students, teachers, and staff, civil rights and technology lawyers, and educational technological programmers. The authors also provide practical guidance for teachers, administrators, students, and their families seeking to identify and combat surveillance in education. This urgent, eye-opening book will be of interest to students and educators with interests in critical media literacy and pedagogy and the sociology of technology and education.
Nolan Higdon and Allison Butler are specialists in media literacy and, with their book, Surveillance Education: Navigating the Conspicuous Absence of Privacy in Schools, they focus attention on the pervasive use of digital surveillance technologies in schools that often results in a pernicious effect on students. Nolan Higdon is a founding member of the Critical Media Literacy Conference of the Americas, a Project Censored National Judge, an author, and a lecturer at Merrill College and the Education Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, USA. Allison Butler is a Senior Lecturer and Director of the Media Literacy Certificate Program in the Department of Communication at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA. She is also Co-Director of the Mass Media Literacy non-profit organization, where she develops and runs training programs for teachers covering critical media literacy in K–12 schools, Vice President on the Board of the Media Freedom Foundation, and a spokesperson for Project Censored. The crime occurred on November 22, 2013, when Arms, wearing a mask and gloves, robbed the Cartersville Jewelry Exchange with a silver handgun, stealing over $50,000 in jewelry. He fled in a stolen Ford F-150, later linked to the crime through advanced DNA technology. The trial, held in December 2023, included testimony from 12 witnesses and 80 exhibits. The prosecution highlighted Arms' recidivist history, leading to the maximum sentence. Victims expressed ongoing trauma, and Arms is prohibited from contacting them. STORY 2: Canton Woman Convicted of Leaving Puppies to Die Sentenced Amber Higdon, 31, of Canton, has been sentenced to 10 years, with two years in confinement, after pleading guilty to seven counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. The charges arose from a July 27, 2023 incident where Higdon abandoned seven puppies in a pink tote on the side of the road, leading to their deaths from heat exposure. The puppies, left without food, water, or shelter, died of pulmonary edema, hemorrhage, and cardiac arrest. Higdon admitted to the act, expecting someone else to find the puppies. The court imposed various conditions, including prohibiting her from owning or contacting animals during probation. Co-defendant Ashley Vernon received five years of probation for her role. STORY 3: Cherokee County to Vote on $415M Budget Oct. 1 ****09.21.24 HARRY JOHNSON*** Cherokee County's proposed $415.7 million budget for FY2025, starting October 1, reflects an increase of over $15 million from the amended FY2024 budget. Major allocations include $167 million for the general fund, $56.6 million for fire services, and $22.1 million for emergency medical services. Public safety accounts for 54.1% of the operational budget, with judicial expenses at 20.5% and general administration at 15.3%. The budget anticipates 32 new positions, including 21 fire and EMS roles. Capital funds are set at $100.9 million, with significant investments in public works, courthouse expansion, and fire department projects. The proposed budget maintains a millage rate of 5.153 mills for operations and 2.888 mills for fire services, supporting full staffing for fire stations. The board will vote on the budget on October 1. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. Back in a moment. Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Here's What's Next for Construction on Neese Road in Woodstock The Neese Road Infrastructure Improvement Project in Woodstock is progressing with three phases. The first phase, focused on the intersection with Highway 92, is complete. The current phase, from Highway 92 to Washington Avenue, includes road straightening, utility realignments, and water and sewer upgrades, and is set to finish by the second quarter of 2025. The third phase, beginning in the first quarter of 2025, will extend from Washington Avenue to Arnold Mill Road, incorporating a roundabout at Washington Avenue. The entire project aims for completion by fall 2026, featuring a new multi-use trail along Neese Road from Highway 92 to Arnold Mill Road. STORY 5: Woodstock Author Publishes Children's Book Woodstock resident Deann Benedict has published a children's book titled "Escape from the Mutt Motel," illustrated by Walter Policelli and released by Mascot Books. The story follows three dogs, Weezy, Lucy, and Boomer, as they try to escape the rundown Mutt Motel. The book encourages children to advocate for animals, promoting responsibility and kindness toward them. Proceeds from the book benefit local animal charities, with Orphan Annie Rescue currently selected. Benedict, inspired by her rescue schnauzer Weezy, hopes to instill a love for animals in young readers. "Escape from the Mutt Motel" is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble and distributed by APG, Ingram, and others. Commercial: INGLES 1 STORY 6: Gas Station and Retail Store Coming to Southeast Cherokee The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved the zoning change for a gas station and retail store on Arnold Mill Road. The decision rezones approximately 4.085 acres from office and institutional to general commercial, with a variance for grading within the undisturbed buffer. The approval passed 4-1, with Chair Harry Johnston opposing, citing concerns about the alignment with the county's land use plan and preference for neighborhood commercial zoning. Commissioner Weatherby supported the change, citing historical zoning issues. Conditions include operating hours from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., restricted trash pickup, and replanting the buffer with dense vegetation. The development will include a 6,400 square-foot convenience store with gas pumps and a 2,000 square-foot retail building. STORY 7: Vincent Named Week 5 Player of the Week Sam Vincent of River Ridge has been named Cherokee County Player of the Week after an impressive performance in a 45-3 victory over Pope. Vincent excelled both offensively and defensively, scoring on a two-yard touchdown pass and securing two interceptions, one of which he returned for a 20-yard touchdown. His contributions helped the Knights hold Pope to just three points and extend their winning streak to four games, during which they have consistently scored over 40 points. With River Ridge averaging 35.4 points per game, they are enjoying one of the best offensive stretches in program history as they prepare to face Sequoyah after the fall break. We'll have closing comments after this. COMMERCIAL: Heller 2 SIGN OFF – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast. They discuss surveillance in education, which Higdon covers in his book, co-authored with Allison Butler, Surveillance Education: Navigating the Conspicuous Absence of Privacy in Schools.Surveillance capitalism, which emerged in the late 20th century, profits from datamining, largely without public awareness. Nolan emphasizes the increased intrusion into schools, particularly following changes to FERPA laws in 2012 allowing private tech companies to collect and use student data. The discussion highlights the false sense of security offered by the surveillance tools as well as the biases ingrained in AI used in education. The topic takes on special significance when considered along with the broader implications for society, including the erosion of democracy and the intensification of neoliberal ideology that prioritizes profit over public welfare.Nolan Higdon is a founding member of the Critical Media Literacy Conference of the Americas, Project Censored National Judge, author, and lecturer at Merrill College and the Education Department at University of California, Santa Cruz. Angel Of The Storm by Larry HigdonThey called him "Bad News" Johnson. His life consisted of heavy drinking, self pity, and violence. He reluctantly agreed to transport his best friend's granddaughter and her pets from Atlanta to Augusta. Little did he realize that this trip would provide the catalyst for a complete reassessment of his life. His ex-wife, Katy Nguyen, worked as an elementary school counselor until her school was demolished by a tornado. Eventually she was assigned to the most dilapidated school in the state, which faculty often referred to as "The School from Hell." At this elementary school her life entered a downward spiral comprised of leaking and exposed overhead pipes, busted windows, rats, and a principal who cared only about test scores. Katy must navigate her way out of the depression that her life circumstances have caused.WHEN LARRY HIGDON wrote ANGEL OF THE STORM, he was working as an elementary school counselor with kindergarten and first graders and was a registered play therapist. He is also a lawyer. LARRY has lived most of his life in metropolitan Atlanta.https://www.amazon.com/Angel-Storm-Larry-Higdon-ebook/dp/B0CKYB5RFF/ref=sr_1_1?crid=Q0LT0R0LIIN&keywords=angel+of+the+storm+by+larry+higdon&qid=1705611830&s=books&sprefix=angel+of+the+storm+by+larry+higdo%2Cstripbooks-intl-ship%2C335&sr=1-1https://angelofthestorm.com/www.urlinkpublishing.com http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/41124lhurl.mp3

One Injured in Shooting at Marietta Laundromat One Arrested After Domestic Dispute Leads to SWAT Response Kennesaw House Fire Leaves Five People Without a Home All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CUofGA STORY 1: One Injured in Shooting at Marietta Laundromat A dispute over money at a Marietta laundromat turned violent when an argument between two acquaintances, Corey Jones, 31, and Billie Higdon, 71, escalated into gunfire. The confrontation, occurring in the parking lot of the QT Coin and Laundry, led to Jones being shot in the arm. He was rushed to the hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening. Higdon was apprehended by the police for questioning regarding the incident. Marietta Police Department's spokesperson, Officer Chuck McPhilamy, indicated that charges against Higdon are expected but will be finalized later. Witnesses highlighted the financial disagreement as the root cause of the altercation. STORY 2: One Arrested After Domestic Dispute Leads to SWAT Response In Marietta, a domestic dispute at Laurel Hills Preserve apartments escalated into a standoff, necessitating intervention by the Marietta Police Department's SWAT team. The situation unfolded Sunday evening after a report of a physical altercation between partners, resulting in one person's injury. Aleigha Ward, 31, barricaded herself inside, refusing cooperation and vowing to avoid jail at all costs. Despite negotiations, Ward, who was armed and made threats captured on bodycam footage, remained defiant. The standoff concluded around midnight when SWAT successfully apprehended Ward without further incident. She now faces charges including terroristic threats and misdemeanor battery, with her bond set at $2,420. STORY 3: Five People Displaced by Kennesaw House Fire A house fire in Kennesaw on Saturday night led to five people being displaced. Responding swiftly, Cobb County Fire crews arrived within six minutes and managed to put out the fire in roughly 30 minutes. According to Nick Danz, the public information officer for the department, there's suspicion that natural gas contributed to the fire's rapid spread, following a loud pop reported by residents. The incident began outside the home before engulfing it. In a stroke of good fortune, the family dog was found and rescued during a follow-up search of the premises. We'll be right back Break: CURIOSITY LAB BIKE RACE – DRAKE STORY 4: Crash in North Cobb Leaves Two Seriously Injured A serious traffic accident near Kell High School on Saturday morning resulted in significant injuries for two people. The collision, involving 32-year-old Ali Babar from Marietta on a Honda CB500 motorcycle and 90-year-old Marilyn Jensen from Woodstock in a Honda Civic, occurred just before 9:45 a.m. at the intersection of Canton Road and Farm Ridge Drive. According to Cobb Police spokesperson Officer Aaron Wilson, the crash happened when Jensen, attempting a left turn, crossed into Babar's path, causing the motorcycle to hit the curb and Babar to be thrown onto the road. Both Babar and Jensen were seriously injured and taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. The investigation is ongoing, with police urging witnesses to contact Cobb Police at 770-499-3987 with any information. STORY 5: Wellstar Names New Kennestone President Lorrie Liang is the newly appointed president of Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center and Wellstar Windy Hill Hospital, where she will also serve as senior vice president of Wellstar Health System. Bringing over 25 years of healthcare experience from her previous role at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida, Liang managed a 900-bed facility, showcasing her proficiency in hospital operations and healthcare systems management. She holds a master's degree in health services administration. Liang takes over from Mary Chatman, aiming to lead Kennestone's executive team, enhance collaborations across Wellstar markets, and drive further successes by engaging with community and healthcare stakeholders. We'll be back in a moment Break: TEDS – INGLES 2 STORY 6: 'There is Hope': Mableton Councilwoman's Fight for MS Diagnosis Patricia Auch, serving on the Mableton City Council, encountered a life-changing challenge when diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that compromises the protective covering of nerve fibers, leading to symptoms like vision loss in one eye. Navigating her diagnosis was fraught with difficulties, as skepticism from healthcare professionals delayed recognition and treatment, despite clear MRI findings. This reflects broader issues in healthcare, where studies indicate women, including those of color, often face dismissal of their pain, adversely affecting their care. Auch's determination led to her starting treatment with OCREVUS, thankfully covered by insurance, though it's notably costly. With her husband and community's support, Auch remains optimistic, ready to face her new reality with strength. STORY 7: Paving Project to Close Two Car Lots Near Chattahoochee River The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is in the process of a repaving project, temporarily closing the Columns Drive parking lot on Tuesday and the Powers Island lot on April 8. Meanwhile, the Interstate North lot has reopened. Though Columns Drive will be closed to vehicular traffic, it remains open for pedestrians and cyclists. This initiative aims to fix sub-surface issues, improve traffic flow and visibility, and update signage. The Akers Mill and Powers Island lots have been repaved as part of this project, which won't change the size or layout of the parking areas. Park officials are advising visitors to use alternative parking lots to reduce congestion and express gratitude for the public's patience during these enhancements. In 1974, Carl Higdon met a strange, floating humanoid in the woods, and was taken inside a strange see-through structure, only to be literally dropped back down to Earth. Higdon's case is a classic UFO abduction, but it may also shed light on other unexplained disappearances and deaths around the world. California's wine country conjures images of pastoral vineyards and cellars lined with oak barrels. As a mainstay of the state's economy, California wines occupy the popular imagination like never before and drive tourism in famous viticultural regions across the state. Scholars know remarkably little, however, about the history of the wine industry and the diverse groups who built it. In fact, contemporary stereotypes belie how the state's commercial wine industry was born amid social turmoil and racialized violence in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century California. In The Grapes of Conquest: Race, Labor, and the Industrialization of California Wine, 1769–1920 (University of Nebraska Press, 2023) Dr. Julia Ornelas-Higdon addresses these gaps in the historical narrative and popular imagination. Beginning with the industry's inception at the California missions, Dr. Ornelas-Higdon examines the evolution of wine growing across three distinct political regimes—Spanish, Mexican, and American—through the industry's demise after Prohibition. This interethnic study of race and labour in California examines how California Natives, Mexican Californios, Chinese immigrants, and Euro-Americans came together to build the industry. Dr. Ornelas-Higdon identifies the birth of the wine industry as a significant missing piece of California history—one that reshapes scholars' understandings of how conquest played out, how race and citizenship were constructed, and how agribusiness emerged across the region. The Grapes of Conquest unearths the working-class, multiracial roots of the California wine industry, challenging its contemporary identity as the purview of elite populations. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. IWP Ep31 Julia Ornelas-Higdon - The Grapes of Conquest I recently spoke with author Julia-Ornelas-Higdon about her book The Grapes of Conquest - Race, Labor, and the Industrialization of California Wine, 1769–1920. Julia is an associate professor at Cal State University Chanel Islands and this is fascinating book if you're interested in the history of California and California Wine especially Pre-Prohibition. It looks at this history from a different perspective than what we normally hear about and is hidden from most of the glossy histories. We learn more about the plight of the Native American Indians, Mexican and Chinese workers that made the early wine industry possible. The large German and French vineyards of southern California and the professionalization of the industry are covered as well. This book takes a real academic but readable approach and what I especially enjoyed is that it concentrates more on the early Southern California wine history, which we don't hear as much as much about. We've discussed some of this in episodes 24 and 26 on professor Eugene Hilgard and University of California Experiment Stations and more so in Episode 28 on Mission San Jose wine history. There are some other upcoming episodes that explore related themes. Follow the podcast www.instagram.com/indiewinepodcast or email indiewinepodcast@gmail.com with questions, comments or feedback. The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe Carl Higdon's abduction experience in Wyoming on October 25th, 1974. Carl was ready to do some hunting (of pig-skinned elk) when other hunters directed Carl to a secret spot. That secret spot saw quite a bit more activity than Carl had bargained for and the hunter would become the hunted. Would Carl see another civilisation? Another world? If so, why? Why would an alien need a drill? As Carl may have taken a knock on the head, it is slightly possible that concussion and associated head trauma difficulties could be the cause of this tale. An expert in hypnotic regression may have been brought in to establish the truth… All that and more on this weeks probe. Episode Notes Is it an abduction? A contact experience? Both? Neither? The encounter that Carl Higdon had in October, 1974 in Wyoming is one of those strange 1970s encounters that doesn't get enough attention. After…encountering Margery Higdon's 2017 book about her husband's ordeal, I thought it would be a good subject for our approach here on The Saucer Life. SynopsisOn today's date in 2005, the Philadelphia Orchestra gave the premiere performance of a new Percussion Concerto by American composer Jenifer Higdon. The soloist was Colin Currie, a Scottish virtuoso for whom the work was tailor made.In program notes for her work, Higdon wrote, “When writing a concerto, I think of two things: the particular soloist for whom I am writing and the nature of the solo instrument. In the case of percussion, this means a large battery of instruments, from vibraphone and marimba (the favorite instrument of soloist Colin Currie), to nonpitched smaller instruments like brake drums, wood blocks or Peking Opera gongs.“Not only does a percussionist have to perfect playing all these instruments, he must make decisions regarding the use of sticks and mallets ... not to mention the choreography. ... Where most performers do not have to concern themselves with movement across the stage during a performance, a percussion soloist must have every move memorized.”Higdon's new concerto proved popular with both audiences and the critics, and in 2010 the work won that year's Grammy for best classical contemporary composition.Music Played in Today's ProgramJennifer Higdon (b. 1962) Percussion Concerto; Colin Currie, percussion; London Philharmonic; Marin Alsop, cond.
