In Episode 268, you will learn a simple system called "WOOP" to help you achieve your dreams or goals and help you navigate any challenges you face.   It's a simple system that I learned from Ethan Kross, one of the world's leading experts on emotion regulation. Ethan Kross, PhD, two-time National Bestselling author of SHIFT and CHATTER, is an award-­winning professor in the University of Michigan's top-­ranked Department of Psychology and Ross School of Business.   The process of shifting this conversation centers around the word WOOP. You know the song WOOP There It Is. So, what does WOOP stand for? Wish, Outcome, Obstacles, and Plan—it's as simple as that. I want you to think about a goal you may have for yourself. Most of us fall short because we don't follow through, and self-talk stops us from pursuing our dreams and goals. But not anymore; I will walk you through the WOOP system so that you can start the pathway to achieving your goals.   It's a straightforward process that puts you in the driver's seat and is simpler than you might think. W -  Wish. What wish or goal do you want to achieve?  O - Outcome. What outcome are you looking for? Is this goal worth pursuing? Next, ask yourself what will happen if you achieve this goal. What feeling or emotion will you experience? Less stress or more energy, financial freedom, or more in control? O - Obstacles. What obstacles could you face? Is it a lack of time, resources, or motivation? What is preventing you from achieving this goal?  P—Plan. The plan is what you will implement and your intentions for achieving this goal.   This plan has a question you need to ask yourself. It's called the 'If-Then' plan.   If I do this, then what can you expect? The same applies if I don't do this. What will it mean for me? It is a way to anticipate potential challenges and plan how to overcome them, ensuring you're prepared for whatever may come your way.     You will also learn that we all have mental chatter that focuses on the future or the past.  You will learn how to leverage those thoughts to your advantage.   I look forward to you WOOPING it up and getting excited about achieving your goals and dreams.  Thank you for joining me today. While none of us can avoid those triggers, how we respond to them can make all the difference. In this conversation, Ethan and I explore his research on how to better manage our emotions. Key Points We often assume that approaching emotions is universally good and avoiding emotions is universally bad. Reality is much more nuanced. We can strategically use our senses to modulate our feelings. Music is a simple and powerful way to manage emotions proactively. Use playlists that align with the mood you wish to create. Using distancing language when talking to yourself (i.e. saying “you” instead of “I”) can help you regulate. Time shifting may help regulate your emotions. Ask yourself, how will I feel about this in a week? A month? A year? Different tools work for different people at different times. Experiment to help you determine what works best for you. David Obstfeld, a tenured professor with over 15 years of research experience, saw a troubling trend at universities: first-generation college students were struggling to secure job opportunities upon graduation, leaving them at a disadvantage compared to their peers. Scott received his PhD in Behavioral Decision Research from Carnegie Mellon in 2007, and he then spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow at Wharton. His research focuses on understanding the emotional causes and consequences of consumer financial decision-making, with a particular interest in the behavior of tightwads and spendthrifts. The overarching goal of his work is to understand when and why consumers behave differently than they should behave (defined by an economically rational benchmark, a happiness-maximizing benchmark, or by how people think they should behave), and to develop marketing and policy interventions to improve consumers' decision making and well-being. But research shows that avoidance is costly. Doctoral student Christina Bradley and professor Lindy Greer, both of the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, say teams perform better when their leaders respond effectively to members' emotions. The researchers outline when and how to do that in a way that builds stronger relationships, teams, and organizational culture. Bradley and Greer are coauthors, with Michigan Ross professor Jeffrey Sanchez-Burks, of the HBR article "When Your Employee Feels Angry, Sad, or Dejected."

Over the course of his career, Marcus has developed a practice for creating culturally contagious ideas that inspire people to take action. His strategies and creative contributions have led to the launch and success of Google's “Real Tone” technology, the “Made In America” music festival, the Brooklyn Nets, and State Farm's “Cliff Paul” campaign – among others.
 
 Prior to his advertising tenure, Marcus began his career in music and tech with a startup he co-founded before working on iTunes + Nike sport music initiatives at Apple and running digital strategy for Beyoncé. 
 
 Marcus' work centers squarely on the impact of culture and the power that comes from having great cultural proximity. His best-selling book, For The Culture: The Power Behind What We Buy, What We Do, and Who We Want to Be, examines the influence of culture on consumption and unpacks how everyone from marketers to activists can leverage culture to get people to take action. Dave Ulrich is the Rensis Likert Professor at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, and a partner at the RBL Group, a consulting firm focused on helping organizations and leaders deliver value.  He has published over 200 articles and book chapters and over 30 books. He edited Human Resource Management 1990-1999, served on editorial board of 4 other journals and on the Board of Directors for Herman Miller (16 years), has spoken to large audiences in 90 countries; performed workshops for over half of the Fortune 200; coached successful business leaders, and is a Distinguished Fellow in the National Academy of Human Resources.
