Special thanks to Canon Andrew White, a beloved friend of KEC, for joining us online and sharing an update. Presented online on April 4, 2020.
“How do we bring enemies together?” That's the question which has dominated much of Canon Andrew White's ministry. For many years he was the only Anglican vicar in Baghdad, staying there throughout the most recent Iraq war. He only left when the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby told him: “You're more use to us alive than dead, Andrew”. In this in-depth interview with Premier Christianity's Sam Hailes, Canon Andrew opens up about his early life, his ongoing health issues and why he's been investigated twice by the Charity Commission. The Profile is brought to you in association with Premier Christianity magazine. For a free sample copy of the latest issue visit premierchristianity.com/freesample

Canon Andrew White shares an uncommon boldness that opens up doors to the impossible in the natural and in the supernatural. His life message is simple – Don't take care, take risks! Glory, honour, restoration and healing is at stake when we choose to be too careful. For the sake of the Kingdom, take risks – even with those who are so different from you.

Thirty years since the start of construction began on the largest regeneration project Britain has seen in modern times - Canary wharf - the area's former vicar and now Bishop of Salisbury, Nicolas Holtham, returns to find out what's changed and meet some old friends still working in the community. The Government have announced funding to increase security at places of worship at risk of hate attacks. It comes in the same week a mosque and Gurdwara were fire bombed in Leeds. Home Office Minister Baroness Williams talks to Edward Stourton about how the new funding will help and we also hear from Director of Just Yorkshire Nadeem Murtuja. The man known as the Vicar of Baghdad has been cleared by the Metropolitan Police of paying Isis to free Yazidis slaves. Canon Andrew White joins Edward Stourton to reflect on the investigation and its impact on him. The Chairman of the Conservative Muslim Forum, Mohammed Amin, discusses what he sees as his parties failure to take action on Islamophobia. Journalist Konstantin Von Eggert talks to Edward Stourton about the ultra-conservative, orthodox, Cossack "morality police" due to patrol World Cup games which kick off in Russia this week. Charles Clarke, the former Home and Education secretary, discusses a new report on Religious Education. Jayne Ozanne talks about her new book 'Just Love: A Journey of Self-acceptance' and tells of her 40 year journey to reconcile her faith with her sexuality before becoming one of the leading figures ushering in a new era of LGBTI acceptance in the Church. Jesus is the great divider of humanity.
What does it mean for us to be heirs of Christ, destined for glory, yet called to suffer? Taking as his text Romans 8:17, Canon Andrew White—the "Vicar of Baghdad"—speaks to Wheaton students on the topic of suffering and persecution. Describing the persecution faced by the church in the Middle East, specifically in regards to his ministry in Iraq, Canon White calls Wheaton to follow Christ wholeheartedly, sharing not only in His glories, but also in His sufferings. While ISIS ravages the church in the Middle East, and while Canon White's own parishioners face the threat of death, the promises of Christ still stand fast.
