Colin is a punk, zine maker, writer, podcaster, and restorative justice and trans support advocate based In Pittsburgh, PA. They are also my friend. I first met Colin via their incredible fanzine about eating every slice of pizza in Manhattan, Slice Harvester, when I was a young punk living in New York City. In this episode we have different recollections of our first interaction, but either way, we've spent years collaborating and chilling since. Colin was a member of the now-defunct Support New York, an anarchist collective that developed methods for facilitating community-based accountability processes around sexual violence. Colin is now active with Trans Buddy Pittsburgh, a community peer-support organization that helps trans and non-binary people navigate healthcare. They continue their great work documenting the freakier side of the American punk scene, via their Life Harvester Radio podcast and Life Harvester newsletter. We discuss all of these projects and causes, as well as what it's like to transition genders during the COVID-19 pandemic. Note: this episode was recorded before the current Black Lives Matter protests erupted around the country following the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many others. We thus do not discuss the movement, or specifically a world without police, but I think some of Colin's work and insights could be useful for imagining one. We’re celebrating Divabetic's 8 Year Anniversary of Diabetes podcasting with musical inspiration from Patti Austin. Grammy Award-winning Singer Patti Austin is in constant demand globally for live performances, thanks to a legacy of recordings that started in 1955, continued through the ‘60s with success as a teenage R&B star before establishing herself as a mainstay among jazz and soul audiences through her ‘70s recordings. By the ‘80s, Austin became known to the wider international audience as a result of the Grammy-nominated “Baby Come To Me” and “How Do You Keep The Music Playing”, her early ‘80s classic duets with James Ingram. In New York, they referred to Patti as the “Queen of Studio” for her singing abilities. When she arrived on set to work for Randy and Michael Brecker, Patti met Luther Vandross for the first time. The moment created a lasting friendship. “Another thing (besides music) that bonded me to Luther was our weight issues,” she said. The two dialed each other often. “When touring, if we were in the same city, we attended movies together.” “He would usually pick some silly movie like [Scary Movie]” she said, expanding on the personal side of their relationship in a loving, humorous way. “I had type 2 diabetes,” says the former 285- pound singing sensation. “I had obesity-driven diabetes,” continued the now 140-pound Austin. To reach her new weight, Patti Austin had gastric bypass surgery and the result has been remarkable. Guests include Poet Lorraine Brooks, Jill Weisenberger MS, RDN, CDE, CHWC, FAND, Chris Pickering co-founder of ‘The Betes Bros, Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDE, and Mama Rose Marie. Throughout this podcast we will be featuring songs from ‘The Best Of Patti Austin’ album courtesy of SONY Music.
On this episode, we talk with Chris Pickering. Some of you might be familiar with the work Chris is doing with his new non-profit called The Betes Bros, and on this episode we cover his upbringing in rural Oklahoma and his unique family history with type 1. Chris and I then get into his dance with severe depression. In our conversation, Chris reveals how the highs and lows of diabetes started to impact his internal and external world. He describes how he simply started to give up, little by little each day, to the point where it was hard for him to simply motivate himself to get out of bed. It got so dark, that Chris took steps to quietly take his own life. Thankfully, his attempt was not successful. This is a conversation about the importance of community, it's about finding our worth in the lowest of moments, and its about how one man's emotional journey has guided him to carve a path to service. Just a heads up, we go to some pretty dark places in this conversation, but this is real stuff. There are a number of studies in the peer-reviewed literature clearly demonstrating the increased incidence of depression in those living with diabetes. I personally believe these honest conversations and personal accounts are critical to share with the world.
