Alan shares a personal milestone (achieving a fitness age of 50!) and dives into his love for mountain biking – an exercise that feels like playing. He uses his experience to draw a powerful analogy between the often extreme portrayal of mountain biking on social media and the curated "highlight reel" often seen in the dental world online. Alan discusses how comparing ourselves to these curated images can lead to feeling "less than," whether it's watching downhill racers pull off impossible stunts or seeing dentists showcase only their most complex cases. The core message? It's okay to find joy and fulfillment in your version of biking or dentistry, even if it isn't "Instagram-epic." You are enough, and your "bread and butter" work is valuable. Key Points: Alan's journey from reluctant runner to avid mountain biker (including surviving being hit by a truck!). The joy of finding exercise that feels like play. The danger of comparing your "insides" to others' curated "outsides." Finding contentment and value in your current practice style or skill level is valid and important. While pursuing new skills is great if you want to, don't feel pressured by online comparisons. You are enough, just as you are. Have you ever felt like you're just not enough—no matter how much you achieve, give, or push yourself? I know that feeling all too well.In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on my journey from self-doubt to writing a bestselling book about healing—and how the process of sharing my story taught me that I am good enough.Writing wasn't just about success; it was about deep, personal transformation.✨ Inside this episode, we dive into:
Hello and welcome to 2025, everyone! It's the start of a new year and the time of resolutions. We've all fallen into that trap of making a resolution that just didn't stick. Maybe we resolved to eat better or exercise every day and we did well for a week or two but fell off around mid-January. I think resolutions are too rigid to allow flexibility and too focused on external expectations. So instead, I focus on things I'm leaving behind. Things that no longer serve me this year. It allows me to be flexible and to also focus on my word of the year: rhythm. Rhythm, to me, is a steady comforting pace. And that's what I want to talk about today. In letting go of the things that no longer serve me, instead of making a resolution to do better, I am instead acknowledging that I'm already enough. I'm enough as I am and the changes I make are about growth and alignment, not punishment in some way. I'm leaving behind clutter - digital, physical, and emotional. I'm leaving behind overconsumption. I'm adding joy, nurturing relationships, and putting myself first. And I'm finding my rhythm in life. I'm finding that pace that feels good, that isn't rushed or chaotic. The rhythm that will create a flow that supports my well-being through my days and weeks. What sort of things could you leave behind to enhance your joy? And what sort of things could you add to help with your rhythm? Join me and let's find out together.__About Dr. Michelle Tubman:Dr. Michelle Tubman is certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine, which means she understands exactly what's happening in your body when you diet. Join us as we chat with Deb Brockelsby, founder of StokedNZ, about her incredible journey from a life-changing bike accident to building a thriving business. Her love for adventure and sports, including racing cars and mountain biking, has always been a significant part of her life. However, it was her accident that shifted her perspective on what truly matters. Tune in to hear how she turned adversity into opportunity and built a brand that resonates with customers on a deeper level. About our guest: Debra Brockelsby, often called Debs, grew up on a farm in Waikato, New Zealand, with her close-knit family, including her parents, two sisters, and extended relatives nearby. With a natural passion for sports and numbers, she pursued a Sport and Leisure degree at the University of Waikato, graduating in 2013. After completing her studies, Debs followed her adventurous spirit to Canada, where she spent time snowboarding and enjoying outdoor activities. In 2015, while riding bikes with friends, Debs had a serious accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury (TBI), significantly impacting her life. Her recovery took over a year, during which she worked with a team of specialists, including occupational therapists, neurologists, and neurological physiotherapists. This experience led her to reevaluate her priorities, and she decided to pursue a career that truly ignited her inner passion. At the end of 2017, Debs left her role at Cycling NZ and launched STOKEDNZ, a business driven by her newfound purpose and zest for life. She is deeply committed to personal growth, frequently learning from mentors, reading, and listening to podcasts to continuously improve as a business owner. STOKEDNZ, soon celebrating its second anniversary, reflects Debs' belief in living a life fueled by passion and purpose. Comparison is the thief of joy, but we've never lived in a time of greater social comparison. We compare ourselves on every metric: our jobs, our relationships, our homes, our bodies, our social following, our vacations, our money. Summertime especially can bring up a lot of comparison. It seems like everyone on social media is having the most fun on a beautiful trip with an epic group of friends and impossibly fit bikini bodies. It's easy to forget that we're looking at a highlight reel of everybody else's lives, comparing their best curated moments to our worst. Here's the thing… most of the time when we feel like we aren't enough, or don't have enough, the people we're comparing ourselves to don't even have a life we'd actually want. The grass isn't greener on the other side. The grass is greener where you water it. Join me for some vulnerable real-talk on: The fake side of what we see on social media Comparing our family life, relationship status and friend groupsWhy you don't need to stop following everyone you compare yourself to Using envy as your compass and inspiration for what you really want Overcoming the capitalist idea of competitionHow comparison leads to scarcity and lack mentality How to rewrite the stories we tell ourselves Recognizing what you ACTUALLY want VS what comparison tricks you into wantingCarving out your own unique path of successOur show is produced by:Gillian Berner, Host, Producer & EditorOlivia Nashmi, Audio EngineerCarolyn Schissler, Designer & Web ProducerSara Valentine, Content ProducerFor advertising and sponsorship inquiries, please contact Frequency Podcast Network. "Enough is enough""That's enough""Leave good enough alone""Close enough is good enough"It's amazing how one simple word can relate so deeply to our relationship with clutter and our satisfaction with our stuff and life in general. This week we talk about how some enough statements can really make you take stock of where you are at and where your satisfaction lies. You Are Enough - Stuff won't make you enough. More stuff, less stuff... you are enough regardless of your things. You've Done Enough - Do what you can with what you have. Every step forward is a step forward (I know... profound!)What Is Enough - What do you need to be happy? How many of something do you need to have enough?I've Had Enough - When you reach peak frustration with clutter it's a good thing as it drives you to make changesWhen Is Enough Enough - How do you know when you've done enough decluttering? How do you know when to stop? At what point do you reach the equilibrium of satisfaction and enoughI'd love to ask you to leave a Google review today - it takes less than 2 minutes and it will make a huge impact on others confidence to listen/ engage/ join with our community and services around the world. It needs to be said. I like to give "tips" on this podcast but today I just want you to slow your breathing... take a break... listen to these words.... YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB. I know you have sick kids, you aren't sleeping, you have an endless to do list and your family member just made you mad, you are stressed about bills and your job and are grieving that the kids are getting older and act aloof after school. I get it. Me too! So let's take a second and focus on these scriptures: Collosians 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.
