In this episode of OncoSnacks, Josh and Michael address the classic chemotherapy side effect: nausea. From Terms of Endearment (1983) to ER (2002), from Breaking Bad (2008) to Archer (2011), nausea and vomiting are the most frequently imagined side effects when it comes to chemotherapy. However, we are much better at managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) than we once were; a combination of better antiemetics and move away from highly emetic therapies means patients are usually much better off perspective. Nevertheless, in the words of great ancient oncologist Sun Tzu: "if one knows oneself, and knows the neuronal pathways associated with chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, one need not fear the result of a thousand infusions." En Figura y Fondo Polo Ramírez estuvo con César Gabler quien recomendó la muestra que se está realizando en el Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende por su celebración de 50 años. Además, con Francisco Aravena conversaron con El Dr. Juan Carlos Sáez es director del Centro Interdisciplinario De Neurociencia De Valparaíso (CINV), sobre hallazgo mundial podría revolucionar el campo del conocimiento del cerebro y sus conexiones eléctricas.

En conmemoración del Día Internacional de la Mujer, Polo Ramírez habló con dos expertos de diferentes áreas sobre la apertura de espacios para liderazgos femeninos. En Figura y Fondo, César Gabler destacó la crítica de las mujeres por su representación en el arte. Por otro lado, Andrea Calixto, subdirectora del Centro Interdisciplinario de Neurociencia de la Universidad de Valparaíso (CINV), explicó la necesidad de apoyo por parte de sus colegas en diversas áreas del conocimiento.

Maite Castro, investigadora de la Universidad Austral y colaboradora del Centro Interdisciplinario de Neurociencia de la Universidad de Valparaíso (CINV), quien comentó el proyecto ReBrain y la búsqueda por mejorar la vejez. Además, en la sección Figura y Fondo, César Gabler reconoció el trabajo de Rodolfo Andaur y Alejandra Prieto, entre otros, junto con la relación de los artistas con la economía extractivista y lo que sucede con el litio.

Además conversó con Ramón Latorre, doctor en Ciencias de la U. de Chile, Director del Instituto Milenio Centro Interdisciplinario de Neurociencias de Valparaíso (CINV),  profesor titular del Instituto de Neurociencia de la U. de Valparaíso, académico asociado de la U. de Chicago (EE.UU.) y profesor adjunto de la U. de California en Los Ángeles (EE.UU.). Premio Nacional de ciencias naturales 2002. 

Polo Ramírez estuvo en Figura y Fondo con Césal Gabler que se refirió a las exposiciones de Mariana Najmanovich "La muerte y otras miserias" y de Sebastian Calfuqueo "Espejo de Agua" y "Esporas". Además, junto a Francisco Aravena conversaron con Arlek González, investigadora del Centro Interdisciplinario De Neurociencia De Valparaíso (CINV) y académica de la Escuela de Química y Farmacia de la Universidad de Valparaíso,  se refirió a esta enfermedad.

En este quinto capítulo participan los especialistas Juan Pablo Uchima, ingeniero físico encargado de mediciones de contaminación lumínica en la Universidad de La Serena (ULS), Paula Plaza, bióloga e investigadora del Centro de Estudios Avanzados en Zonas Áridas (CEAZA) y John Ewer, investigador del Centro Interdisciplinario de Neurociencia de Valparaíso (CINV), quien se ha especializado en el estudio de los relojes biológicos. Este tema resulta de especial relevancia tras conocerse impactantes cifras, donde se destaca que el 90% del alumbrado público no cumple con la normativa lumínica actual. Esta situación, que afecta a la investigación astronómica, puede ser también de riesgo para los ecosistemas y la salud humana, al interferir en su ciclo de vida, sueño y metabolismo.

Polo Ramírez junto Mariajosé Soto comentaron la entrevista del candidato presidencial sobre la medida cautelar de arraigo nacional y su camino a La Moneda y Alejandra Mulet recomendó en Sabores Fresco recomendó el Fe Restorán. Además, conversó con el Dr. Juan Carlos Sáez, director del centro interdisciplinario de neurociencia de la universidad de Valparaíso CINV, respecto de los efectos del estrés durante el embarazo en los recién nacidos.

Canada has the second largest consumption of cannabis world wide.  While many people are using medical marijuana to manage various ailments, it's use has only been approved for 3 conditions,  those conditions being chemotherapy induced nausea/vomiting (CINV), neuropathic pain and pain at the end-of life, and spasticity associated with spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis (MS).  The next 3 episodes will explore the rules and responsibilities of clinicians regarding medical marijuana, different forms of cannabinoids and recommendations on a harm reduction approach.

Rudolph M. Navari, MD is the Director of the Cancer Care Program in Central and South America for the World Health Organization. He has practiced oncology for nearly 30 years. His research interests are focused on supportive care in clinical oncology, development of antiemetics, palliative care, and the doctor-patient relationship in clinical oncology.
