Dr. Sandie Morgan is joined by Josie Heyano as the two discuss the importance of bridging communities to prevent human trafficking. Josie Heyano Josie Heyano, LMSW, is a Deg Xinag Athabascan advocate from Alaska, focused on creating holistic and decolonized practices to serve Alaska Native and Indigenous communities impacted by human trafficking. With extensive experience supporting youth facing homelessness, exploitation, and trafficking, she founded Signify Consulting, LLC, to further her collaboration in anti-trafficking work across Alaska. Josie is a Presidentially appointed member of the U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking, advising federal policy, and in 2023, she received the FBI Director's Community Leadership Award for her contributions to prevention and intervention in Alaska. Her work honors her great aunt Linda Miller and others still awaiting justice. Key Points Traditional introductions are important as they reflect relationships and community ties, highlighting accountability and cultural identity. Serving on the U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking, Josie highlights the importance of humility and listening to voices within her community that are often unheard. She cites a recent visit by the council to Alaska as an opportunity to humanize the data and issues surrounding human trafficking. Human trafficking is a symptom of broader systemic issues, such as domestic violence, homelessness, and mental health crises. There is a need for a holistic approach that addresses these interconnected challenges within Indigenous communities. The Alaska Human Trafficking Data Needs Assessment revealed gaps in data and understanding regarding trafficking. Community relationships and collaboration across different sectors (service providers, law enforcement, academia) are necessary to improve data collection and response strategies. Cultural practices and community care can serve as protective factors against human trafficking. It is necessary to integrate traditional values and practices into prevention efforts, focusing on unconditional care, relationship building, and addressing basic community needs. A preventative approach that extends beyond immediate trafficking interventions includes ensuring that community members have access to essential resources, support systems, and a sense of belonging from birth, thus preventing vulnerability to trafficking in the first place. Active, compassionate engagement with community members fosters safety and well-being. A group of outraged and frightened Georgia residents have united to fight a plan to put what would be America's largest laboratory monkey-breeding facility in the small town of Bainbridge, Georgia, which is 233 miles south of Atlanta. The residents have filed a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the highly controversial plan to house 30-thousand monkeys, TWICE the human population of the town. PETA is on the ground supporting the residents. They argue that the plan should be invalidated because local officials approved the proposal during an illegally assembled meeting, violating Georgia's Open Meetings Act. Basically, the citizens say this was being done behind their backs and they are furious over the impact on their safety and their property values. They say the presence of thousands of caged monkeys in distress, waiting to be shipped off for cruel experiments would be a constant source of anxiety and cast a pall over their close-knit community. Now, UnchainedTV's Jane Velez-Mitchell gets the very latest from PETA's Amy Meyer, Kristina Martin of Stop the Money Business Bainbridge Group and resident Linda Miller. There are two sides to knowing. The first brings with it a sense of accomplishment. After all, we all seek a deeper sense of knowing. At times, it may even feel powerful to "know." There is another side of knowing that can elicit several emotions, including discomfort, shame, and fear. When these feelings begin to surface, the human brain goes to work. Its primary function is to protect you. Fear and discomfort are seen as threats that try to suppress the knowing. Yet, even in the deep recesses, you know. This week on The Coffee with Rhonda Show, we will explore what we pretend NOT to know, as leaders, colleagues, family members, and fellow humans. Joining Roz Jones, Mireille Toulekima, and I are joined this week at the coffee table by special guest Linda Miller. #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #managementtraining #leadershiptraining #selfawareness #socialawareness #culture #dei #deib #diversityequityinclusion #diversity #inclusion
In this episode of Pull Up A Chair, we sit down with Linda Miller and her daughter Karen Singer. Back in the seventies and eighties, Linda volunteered with HIAS - Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society - to help the Soviet refugees settle in Baltimore. She and her family helped them rent apartments and start a new life. And to get a break from the city, they invited them to their farm in Pikesville. Linda's volunteer work complimented her job as a social worker in Baltimore city schools where she was instrumental in launching the Project Fresh Start program, designed to provide assistance to eligible homeless families. Project FRESH Start still exists today in some form with Catholic Charities. Linda kept busy working and volunteering - all while raising her family, together with her husband Howard, on a sheep farm in Pikesville. Listen to learn more about life on the farm.

Pasta-making from the BEST From the moment I stepped into her pasta studio, Linda Miller Nicholson, also known as Salty Seattle, exuded warmth and enthusiasm that was palpable. Her expansive studio is located about 30 miles east of Seattle, and it is super cool! Cleverly designed with a fireplace, chic seating, and rainbow-colored pasta tools. Woodblock counters cover the surfaces of each workstation. On one side of the studio, she has an antique refrigerator that must be 8-10 feet long with glass windows, old-fashioned metal handles, and beautiful wood doors. She has retrofitted the appliance to today's refrigeration standards. You would love this piece! Linda's unique culinary studio is truly a rainbow pasta dreamland. I was a guest of my dear friends at Tuscan Women Cook (Episode #3)for this hands-on class and adventure. We spent hours learning how to make several types of colorful handmade pasta, laughing, and learning while sipping wine. I really honed my pasta-making skills with Linda and my passion for this culinary craft keeps my family and friends eating fresh pasta for days! Linda Miller Nicholson is an internationally recognized pasta-making powerhouse whose work is featured across media outlets, including Saveur, Good Housekeeping, Buzzfeed, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Delta Airlines, the BBC, and Business Insider. She has made pasta art for Katy Perry, The cast of The Chew. And Harry Connick Jr. She's been the subject of several documentaries and works with companies like the Food Network and Buzzfeed's Tasty. I can also attest that she is incredibly delightful and highly talented. I feel super fortunate to have spent quality time with Linda. We talked about so many wonderful things in this episode! Growing up in a bi-racial family Moving from Southern California to rural Idaho as a child How she learned to make pasta at four years old! Her fascinating childhood and how "Slobber the Cow" influenced it How travel shaped her life and career How she created this unique, colorful career in pasta-making How creating Salty Seattle and wildly experimenting with colors helped her tap into her creative side The details of her fantastic online and in-person pasta-making classes Linda's cookbook "Pasta Pretty Please" How to create colored pasta with all-natural ingredients Her pasta "ideas" list- Imagine the "pastabilities"! Linda offers sound advice and insight for other entrepreneurs and how she believes that no one is really ever "stuck" but that we are continually growing and learning.
