Joshua Toomey interviews Cody Quistad of Wage War, discussing Cody's work with Jelly Roll, Ronnie Radke, and The Ghost Inside. Cody shares insights into his musical journey, including early influences and his transition to country music songwriting. The new Wage War record "Stigma" is promoted, and the interview highlights Cody's evolution and collaborations. Songwriting and producing have always been Cody's favorite parts of music because of the creative rush when everything clicks. Growing up with musician parents who worked at Disney and toured with bands, Cody was surrounded by music, which inspired his passion from an early age. His first band experiences included local talent shows and playing at various small venues before forming Wage War in 2010. Their big break came with the Warped Tour in 2016, which significantly boosted Thier exposure and marked a pivotal moment in our journey. Cody talks about their excitement for their new music, emphasizing their passion for creating and performing. They discussed the inspiration behind their song "Tombstone," which includes heavy riffs and movie references, showcasing their creative process. The upcoming album, "Stigma," set for release on June 21st, features ten diverse tracks aimed at pushing the boundaries of their sound. Cody reflects on the band's journey, their evolving musical style, and the collaborative effort involved in their songwriting process. Luke Severeid, a comedian and metal enthusiast, discusses the challenges of people mispronouncing his name and his decision to correct them consistently. He shares his background, including playing in metal bands and his transition into comedy, highlighting the similarities between the two in terms of performance energy. Luke notes the importance of understanding and adapting to diverse audiences, even those unfamiliar with metal. Severeid emphasizes his love for metal music and his efforts to incorporate it into his comedy, despite the genre's niche appeal and the initial resistance he faced. Toomey discusses his lack of interest in moshing, sharing an early experience at a Cannibal Corpse concert that solidified this. Despite enjoying the community aspect of moshing, Toomey prefers to stay on the sidelines. Luke also touches on his career, the transition to Pittsburgh for better opportunities, and their efforts to balance metal-themed comedy with broader topics to reach a wider audience.Joshua Toomey on Facebook/Twitter @talktoomeytalk Subscribe to KNOTFEST YouTube for exclusive performances & in-depth interviews with the most exciting artists in aggressive music, deep dives into iconic artists' discography, and more. Memphis May Fire are a band that truly wears their heart on their sleeve and puts their money where their mouth is.So much so that every single released from their recent album Remade In Misery was accompanied by a piece of charity driven merchandise that helped raise money for causes close to the bands heart.Remade In Misery continues the trend of heavy rock inspired music, confronting issues such as violence, anxiety and polarization with an empathy that makes each song relatable to the average music loving individual.A band that self-professes “makes music for the broken', Memphis May Fire prove that you can still rock the fuck out while remaining true to your beliefs.Frontman Matty Mullins sat down with HEAVY to run through the release, starting with if he agrees with the statement in the press release that Remade In Misery is Memphis May Fire's heaviest album to date."Definitely,” he nodded. “I guess everybody has their own definition of heavy, but for all of us in the band we all agree it's definitely our heaviest record yet."One of the ways the band did that was by going back to their core sound, a process which Mullins simplified."For us, as a band we started out as something and then we changed a lot of the years with experimenting and trying new things,” he measured. “Going back to our core with what gave us our start - which was heavy Memphis May Fire - is something that we've been wanting to do for a long time and didn't know if it was the right path for us to take but going through the pandemic and having all this time to rediscover us as a band and us as people gave us the courage to say we're gonna make the record that we wanna make. We're gonna make it ourselves, Kellen's gonna produce it, we're gonna write it in our houses and our studios and we're just gonna do this. And we did. That's how we got back to the core."In the full interview, Matty talks about the early response to the album, having Cody Quistad from Wage War help with the writing process, the guest spot from AJ Channer from Fire From The Gods, the lyrical content and conveying those thoughts through music, the charity driven merch and where to get it, having someone in the band produce and mix the album, their motto of connecting with the broken hearted and how they go about achieving that and more.
Memphis May Fire singer Matty Mullins called in to talk about their new album "Remade In Misery" as well as their headlining tour coming to the Glasshouse on Wednesday, July 20. ⚡️Our first IN PERSON interview since March 2020! ⚡️We had the pleasure of interviewing Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire over Zoom video!Memphis May Fire makes anthems for the broken. The four-piece rock band channel a generation's worth of angst, frustration, and pain, with a focused blend of gigantic melodic hooks and crushing aggression. Even after topping Billboard's Hard Music Albums chart and breaking into radio's Active Rock Top 20, Memphis May Fire refuses to sacrifice who they are or the people who made them. In fact, Remade in Misery, their seventh full-length album, is the heaviest Memphis May Fire record yet.It is the first Memphis May Fire album to be both produced and mixed by Kellen McGregor, the band's guitarist who co-founded the group roughly 15 years ago. The longtime rhythm section of bassist Cory Elder and drummer Jake Garland inject the songs with infinite depth and focus. Cameron Mizell, who coproduced 2014 fan-favorite Unconditional with McGregor, produced Matty's vocals.Mullins enlisted his friend Cody Quistad, guitarist and clean vocalist for the band Wage War, during part of the writing process. Fire From The Gods singer AJ Channer guests on “Only Human.” At the heart of any collaboration is the Memphis May Fire mission: to connect with the brokenhearted. The guys are family to the million-plus fans who follow Memphis May Fire on social media, revered by the people who discovered their early albums in 2009 and 2011; those who made Challenger (2012) the biggest selling debut in the history of Rise Records at the time; and everyone who championed their music since. Unconditional debuted at Number One on Billboard's Rock, Independent, and Hard Music charts. In 2016, This Light I Hold made inroads into radio while rooted in heaviness. Boasting the singles “The Old Me,” “Live Another Day,” and “Heavy is the Weight,” Broken was a distillation of what the band does creatively, with the group's signature passion and fearless genre-bending.Remade in Misery is the sum total of all that's come before with a forceful charge into the future. We want to hear from you! Florida hard rock quartet connected on a global basis with their 2019 album Pressure, opening up a broader fan base and introducing countless new fans to their brand of hard rock. The album and its singles had a combined Spotify stream tally of more than a quarter of a billion listens and propelled the release into Loudwire's Top 50 Metal Albums of 2019.Following up a success like that is never easy, but with their recent release Manic, Wage War have managed to recapture that magic while simultaneously unleashing an entirely new beast.Manic is a collection of 11 tracks designed to connect through turbulence and has landed at a time when turbulence is more the accepted normal than an unwanted distraction.Clean vocalist/rhythm guitarist Cody Quistad joined HEAVY to talk about the album, starting with its early reception."It's been crazy man,” he beamed. “Honestly I don't think I've ever been this overwhelmed with positive feedback. People seem to be loving the album. We've certainly been on both sides of the coin, people praising everything you do and then people seemingly hating everything you do so it's cool to be in a spot where everyone loves you again (laughs)."With their recent success still very much in the forefront of fans – and the bands – minds, Quistad says although things didn't change to much with the recording process for Manic, there were a few minor points which the band gave added attention to."I think we always have the same goal, and it sounds corny or whatever, but we always wanna write the best songs that we can,” he shrugged. “Not only just for our genre, but in general. Something that can go wherever. I wanted to diversify more than ever and the third thing is I wanted to give our band an identity on this record and not have anything where people can say it sounds like this band or something. Something where people are gonna go wow, this is fresh, this is new, and I think we seemingly achieved that. As always, putting out the best record possible at this moment in time."In the full interview Cody runs us through Manic in more detail, why he feels this is the bands strongest album yet, their slower and anthemic tracks on the album and why now is the right time to release them, the popularity of Pressure and why he thinks people connected with it, their recent tour with Beartooth, upcoming plans and more.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Cody Quistad of Wage War over Zoom video! Florida hard rock quintet WAGE WAR — Briton Bond [lead vocals], Cody Quistad [rhythm guitar, clean vocals], Seth Blake [lead guitar], Chris Gaylord [bass], and Stephen Kluesener [drums] — have released their fourth full-length Manic on Fearless Records. The band recently shared their new single "Circle the Drain," one of the most anthemic songs in the band's catalog to date."'Circle the Drain' is a song about learning from past mistakes and accepting responsibility in a world that needs change," the band shares. "It starts with us deciding to be a part of the solution."As for the album, Wage War offer, "After a long wait, and endless hours of work, we could not be more ecstatic to announce our new album Manic. We've spent the entire last year working so hard to bring you the best Wage War yet, and we've never been more sure that we've accomplished that."The band previously shared the video for "High Horse."On Manic, the band masterfully strikes a delicate and well-crafted balance of grooves, riffs, melodies, and electronic flourishes. After amassing nearly 300 million streams and receiving widespread acclaim from Billboard, Loudwire, Modern Drummer, American Songwriter, Alternative Press, and more, the group delivered 11 anthems meant to connect through turbulence."Manic encompasses everything we've gone through as musicians in the last year-and-a-half," says Kluesener. "The whole industry halted, and we technically lost our jobs. Our scene was among the first to leave and the last to come back. The album captures the whole period."Quistad pulls back the curtain even more, saying, "Mania is a wild emotion. The last year was all severe highs and lows. We had some victories, but we've also had so many low points. We've built this thing for the last 10 years and put all of our chips into it. We've missed birthdays and funerals, but we've done some extraordinary things. Last year, we found ourselves wondering if it would ever come back. That's really what the album is about."Ultimately, Manic is a triumph and a definitive artistic statement for Wage War. It represents the apex of an intense creative journey. They built a diehard audience with Blueprints [2015] and Deadweight [2017] and through incessant touring. 2019's Pressure exploded right out of the gate. "Low" piled on 24.9 million Spotify streams with "Who I Am" at 10.7 million Spotify streams and "Me Against Myself" at 8.4 million Spotify streams. Beyond bringing their total stream tally past a-quarter-of-a-billion, it landed on Loudwire's "50 Best Metal Albums of 2019," while Billboard praised the album's levity. American Songwriter called attention to the evolution of the band's songwriting and sound, while New Noise Magazine awarded it 4-out-of-5 stars. Elsewhere, Alternative Press raved, "Wage War are unapologetically changing the game on all fronts on Pressure."We want to hear from you! Rad time with Cody Quistad vocalist of Wage War, & Austin Adkins owner of Get Up and Go Kayaking. Our meeting was random, but after a weekend of hangs I knew I wanted to chat. We talked life, and how much it’s changed for us since the internet, socials, and more. Lots of laughs, despite treading in deep waters.
With the imminent release of third album Pressure, Florida metalcore band Wage War are set to take yet another huge step on their journey to stardom.Following Blueprints and Deadweight, both of which propelled the band further into the metal abyss, Wage War are preparing to unleash a monster of an album that rhythm guitarist and clean vocalist Cody Quistad says the band are qquietly confident with."We really went for it with this one", he stressed, "and covered a lot of ground, explored some new stuff, pefected some old stuff and just went for it! If you're a heavy music fan hopefully it's right up your alley and if you're not a heavy music fan hopefully there's some somgs in there that are also right up your alley. We just tried to diversify and do something different and break us out of a mould that so readily surrounds bands in our scene. We're really excited about it and really proud".When pressed on specifics of the different things they tried on Pressure, Quistad delves a bit deeper."Our band... we've done two records - the first one being Blueprint and the second Deadweight - and metalcore is a very formula based genre and we are so lucky to be part of such a great family of bands. We really just tried to do something different with things like the choruses and that kind of stuff but we also tried some different stuff musically, vocally, everything down to guitar tunings. We've got some songs that will appeal to all of the people who normally like our band, whether that's the you wanna punch your friend in the face for three minute songs - we've got those - or the songs you can cry to alone at midnight when you're driving around. We've got songs like that too so hopefully someone that doesn't normally listen to a band like us can get into it as well".In the full interview Cody talks about the pressures referred to in the title, the lyrical contant and whether they offer a message of hope or despair, the releasing of two singles - 'Prison' and 'Me Against Myself' on the same day, the musical climate that gave birth to the band, why it took them five years to release their debut album, the two year album cycle since, how Wage War have changed musically over the years and the inside scoop on a possible Australian tour.
