In this first episode of Season Nine of The Family Histories Podcast, host Andrew Martin meets Canadian genealogist Ron Williams whose family tree research resulted in him encountering a 57 year old mystery... Understandably, Ron couldn't not investigate and in doing so, uncovered a fascinating story which he then turned it into a book.THE LIFE STORY - ALFRED VICTOR WILLIAMSRon has chosen to tell the fascinating story of his paternal Grandfather - Alfred Victor Williams - one that involves mystery and intrigue, and 57 missing years. The story sees Ron find just a few clues that hint towards some very different elements of his Grandfather's missing first 57 years - an affidavit, a school photograph of a son, and a letter. Why did Alfred spend years living under the alias Roy Hammond?Ron has turned Alfred's story into a book titled 'The Lost Fifty-Seven - A genealogical journey of discovery, deception, secrets and scandal' (2024).THE BRICK WALL - MARY WILLIAMS It's the identity of his 2x Great Grandmother - Mary Williams - that is causing Ron problems in his research. He knows that she was born in about 1831, and likely in Shropshire (or Salop as it was known back then). After finding a confusing 'Cumberland in Salop' reference, Ron has found further Salop references in her census entries after her marriage to George Williams. As Ron doesn't know the birth name of Mary, he's struggled to find the correct marriage, which he estimates was circa 1853, as the couple rapidly grow a family, starting with his Gt Grandfather in 1854.What was Mary Williams' pre-marriage surname? If you think you have a clue or a research idea, you can contact Ron at his website, or alternatively you can find him on Twitter and Bluesky. You can also send us a message, and we'll pass it on to him.In the meantime, Ron is fascinated by Andrew and Sándor's offer of help... but someone's clearly hungry....- - -Credits:Andrew Martin - Host and ProducerRon Williams - GuestJohn Spike - Sándor PetőfiSupport the showThank you for listening! Ron Williams life began in Montana. The son of alcoholic parents, he found himself alone and unsupervised most of his young life. He describes how he felt uncomfortable with the mainstream kids. At 12 he spent the night in an adult drunk tank. At 13 he stole his first car. The only love and belonging he felt through his youth was one summer he spent at a youth ranch where momentarily he felt love belonging and security. Ron learned to run at an early age. He ran away from home, from the law, from anything that was difficult. That trend continued for many years. In and out of prison 6 times he found himself getting old and tired of running. Finally with the support he has found at The Other Side Academy, he has stopped running, found value in his life and learned to face his demons. His story of triumph over a lifetime of pain is one you will want to hear. Ron Williams is one of the most decorated natural bodybuilders in the world, having achieved the highest honor ever awarded in Natural Bodybuilding by becoming the sole recipient of the “Natural Bodybuilder of the Decade” award. As one of the country's leading experts on exercise physiology, diet, nutrition, and fat loss, Coach Ron's brand of training has inspired and motivated thousands of athletes and individuals to truly transform, inside and out. Ron enlisted in the Army when he was only 18 years old and began competing in international sports events for the Army including boxing, swimming, football, platform diving and track. Ron almost got kicked out of the Army because of fighting, but instead, a captain sent him to the boxing team to be whipped into shape. There, he found his athleticism and “champion” mentality to be a gift. Eventually, his boxing coach encouraged him to try bodybuilding and he found that he had everything it took to excel in the sport. Ron's goal was to be the best bodybuilder in the world and he quickly climbed the ladder after placing 1st place in his first teenage competition. He admits that he was initially attracted to bodybuilding because it was a place he could hide his shortcomings and insecurities. However, after traveling to different competitions around the world, he began to find himself through his faith in God and over time he was able to deal with and overcome the emotions and challenges from his past. Ron was able to apply everything he learned from his early life to fuel what he does now today. His life is now fulfilled by helping people physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
