Southeastern Pennsylvania is not typically at the top of the list of renowned wine regions of the world. Yet that is exactly why we stopped into the tasting room at Va La Family Vineyard. We sat down Anthony Vietri, farmer and wine maker, to learn how his family has been farming the land in Avondale, Pennsylvania for almost one hundred years. We talk about his approach to farming grapes and crafting unique and complex wines flowing from the local terroir. If you're into wine and looking for a wonderfully different and refreshing discussion about wine and the business of wine, this is a conversation to savor.OUR PARTNERSouthern Chester County Chamber of CommerceLINKSVa La Family VineyardWebsite: valavineyards.comInstagram: instagram.com/valavineyardsFacebook: facebook.com/VaLaVineyardsAdditional LinksShellbark Hallow FarmCanine Partners for LifeStroud Water Research CenterRelated Start Local EpisodesTraining Service and Companion Dogs with Kirstin DownieConducting World-Leading Fresh Water Research with John JacksonTranscriptThe transcript will be posted on our website as soon as it is available.

There are tropes about France that will not die. So today, Annie and Elyse chat about dog poop and other problems suffered in France. Of course, the conversation we're commenting on took place on Facebook because where else can you find so many vocal yet uninformed people? So, we're having a little bit of fun with it while explaining a few things that are different in France from what English-speaking visitors expect. Is there zero dog poop problem in France? It is difficult to determine the extent of the dog poop problem in France, but we can tell you with certainty that it has gotten a lot better! Like any country, France has some areas where dog owners do not properly clean up after their pets. Please don't blame the whole country, it's that dog owner's fault! A few things you should know about France French people are not raised to think that they have to say yes to everything. It is a fact that French people don't generally sugarcoat their words. Plastic bags are not free in France the way they are at the grocery store in the US. If you need a bag, buy it or buy some small item plus a plastic bag. Don't be a "virtuous visitor" who knows better than locals and will show them the way to being a better person. Learn how things work in the country you're visiting instead. France has changed at lot, even if the impressions you still have from your first visit 20 years ago are still vivid in your mind. Please refrain from psycho analyzing people you don't know on Facebook! French parents give their kids room to grow and experience life, they don't over-protect so much. You are not entitled to France being the same as where home is. It's a different country, learn local customs instead. France is very dog-friendly, but there are few dog parks. This may be best because dog parks can be the place where dogs fight or share pathogens. You can't sit at a café all day working away on your laptop unless it's a café for students or workers. Crowd control measures are put in place for your safety, if the police closes a metro station or a street, please comply. If you've ever had a sports injury, put your back out, or had some sort of aggravating pain that never seemed to go away, you may have gone to a chiropractor. Or an acupuncturist. Or, if you really couldn't get to the bottom of exactly what's wrong with you, you might have tried alternative medicine in the form of traditional Chinese herbs. You might also assume, because you're a human being, that these remarks are directed at you. But actually, they're directed at the horses and dogs in the audience. A horse's or dog's medical trajectory is much the same as ours. When traditional Western medicine doesn't cure what's wrong with them, they – or we on their behalf - turn to alternative medicine. One of the practitioners of these animal alternatives – Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and chiropractic - is Dr Michelle Jobert. Dr. Jobert is the owner of an alternative veterinary medicine practice called The Well Adjusted Pet. If you're wondering how you give a horse chiropractic manipulation, we'll get to exactly how that works in just a minute. Meantime, here's an animal question that might be closer to home. “Why doesn't your dog do what you tell her?” The typical answer to this question is either: (a)My dog is hard-headed and refuses to obey me. Or (b) My dog is stupid. The correct answer, apparently, is neither (a) nor (b). The correct answer is, “The problem is you.” Ann Becnel has been a dog trainer and the owner of a dog training school called Companion Dogs, since 1990. Ann says her job is not so much training dogs, as teaching a dog's owner how to train their dog. The lesson here is, even if you want to work with animals because you prefer them to people, you still end up working with people. There's no doubt we're making huge advances in all kinds of fields of human endeavor. A virtual assistant can give us instant answers to almost every question we ask it. A.I. is on the way to learning almost everything humans can do. And we're seriously investigating building inhabitable cities on other planets. But with all these advances, we haven't made much progress on how to communicate with the millions of creatures who share this planet with us. Present company excluded. Michelle and Ann spend their professional lives communicating with dogs and horses. And, judging by this conversation, their skills at human communication are fairly formidable too. We strive to place well trained service and companion dogs with veterans who have physical or mental injuries, at little to no cost to the veteran. Here at Homers Heroes we find dogs that meet our needs from local shelters. These dogs under go all betting, basic and advanced obedience training and then are trained to the specific tasks the veteran needs them to do. We then invite the veteran to attend a 2 week course to learn about their new service dog and to learn proper handling and training of the dog. This process can be expensive with cost anywhere from $5000 to $30,000. Our program is funded entirely from donations from individuals and businesses and 100% goes toward training and placing the dogs with veterans. Donations are tax deductible.
Training your companion dog for a specific sport may seem out of your league, but dog trainer Sandra Mannion is here to tell you that is not true and why you should consider taking up a new activity with your canine companion.
