Mindset Matters: Redefining Talent in Higher Education

This Week on The Heart of Giving - Part 1: Aspen Institute President and Former Franklin & Marshall College President Dan Porterfield joins Art Taylor to discuss his book "Mindset Matters," exploring how colleges can nurture talent and growth mindsets in students from all backgrounds. Joined by F&M alum Robert Diggs, they dive into the transformative power of higher education. Three illuminating moments: "I view the best form of education as the one that helps the one and the many, that unlocks talent and sees talent in every corner and community. And that by investing in young people, whether financial aid or just as important in their learning and their formation, we make a better world." - Dan Porterfield "We were willing to shake it up a bit and try out some even more particular qualities of talent - curiosity, resilience, saying yes to opportunity, and having a vision of the value of education. These qualities are equally represented across America." - Dan on redefining talent identification "Not that the actual education part wasn't important, but it was the learning that happened around the education piece... It was really the third space or fifth space, being asked to step into co-leading the development of the college house ethos. All of that tracks back to how F&M goes about enriching the mind of young people." - Robert Diggs Don't miss next week's conclusion where we meet Markera Jones, whose journey from Coatesville, Pennsylvania to clinical psychologist exemplifies the power of opportunity and growth mindset in action. Last week, Ben Erwin of Charity Buzz shared how his organization has created a marketplace for unique experiences that benefits nonprofits of all sizes. By connecting celebrities, business leaders, and exclusive opportunities with affluent donors, they've generated over half a billion dollars for charitable causes. If you missed it, it's a fascinating look at innovative fundraising approaches that expand "the giving pie."

As prices for homes and rents continue to rise in many towns and cities, it's one of the key issues for voters. In 2023 the average price of a home in the United States was $495,100, six per cent higher than a year earlier, though the signs are prices may now be starting to fall. That's partly because mortgage rates have spiralled as high as 7% for many new buyers – making repayments prohibitive. We ask business owners working in housing to tell us why, and what's the fix? Ethan Poetic '20 was born in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, and moved to Lancaster in the middle of his eighth-grade year. On March 19, 2011, he was seriously injured when a tractor-trailer collided with his vehicle on Lincoln Highway East (Route 30) in Paradise Township in Lancaster County. This moment put his life on pause and forced him to fight a ruptured aorta, internal bleeding, a concussion, a fractured collarbone and a sprained wrist. The accident would also cause a delay in Poetic's pursuit of higher education as his health became his main priority. After a long road of recovery, Poetic was offered a job at the School District of Lancaster after-school sports program and was accepted as a student at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC). He then went on to attend Millersville University because of their communications department, affordable tuition, safe campus, and for the flexibility that allowed him to work two jobs while taking classes. Poetic was welcomed with open arms at Millersville after transferring from HACC. He got along with the students, staff, professors and public safety personnel. The library became an incredibly useful resource, providing him with access to technology. Poetic's math and writing tutors helped shape his academic career for the better. Although he longed to be more involved on campus, his financial responsibilities took precedence. Poetic graduated from Millersville University with a Bachelor of Science degree in speech communications, with a minor in broadcasting and media. He also holds an associate degree from HACC. Poetic is the only member of his family to graduate twice with a post-secondary degree. He is proud to have been featured on the front page of the LNP Lancaster Newspaper in April of 2021 and on WGAL as an inspirational story in May of 2021. He states that all of his college professors made a positive impact on his life. Specifically, Dr. Theresa Russell-Loretz left an immensely positive influence on Poetic by presenting him with the Department Chair's Special Recognition Award for overcoming adversities and challenges. Poetic says that Millersville University helped him grow as a man and as a leader. “Being around other college students and professors allowed me to see certain areas I needed help with, such as seeking help from both writing and math tutors,” he says. Resources at Millersville helped Poetic to successfully complete two television internships at Lancaster Community TV Channel 66 (LCTV 66). Currently, Poetic is a tutor for Substitute Teacher Services and is in the process of starting his own business of Ethan A. Poetic LLC, which includes keynote speaking, corporate speaking engagements, poetry workshops and serving as a mental health advocate. Texas Supreme Court affirms ban of abortion, 21% of Protestant pastors support homosexual faux marriage, Colorado Christian University secures golf national title

It's Thursday, June 6th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Narendra Modi wins re-election in India, but anti-Christian BJP party loses India posted results from its general election on Tuesday. With nearly a billion voters, it's the largest election in the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi secured a third term, extending his hold on power since 2014. However, his Hindu nationalist party, the BJP, failed to win a majority for the first time in a decade. Over that period, Modi has overseen the suppression of religious minorities like Christians and Muslims in the country.  Christians in India have been praying for a change International Christian Concern reports Christians in India have been praying for a change in government for years. It remains to be seen how the recent elections will affect Christians. Edwin Anand, a bishop in central India, warns that churches should brace for more persecution under a third Modi term.  Christians in India have faced over 600 violent attacks each year since 2021. The country is ranked 11th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian.  Europeans electing new members of European Parliament People across Europe begin voting today in the world's second-largest election. About 400 million Europeans will be selecting new members of the European Parliament.  Typically, the two largest parliamentary groups have been the center-right European People's Party and the center-left Socialists and Democrats.  However, right-wing parties are gaining popularity. France 24 reports a coalition of conservative and right-wing groups could be on track to hold a majority for the first time. Daniel 2:21 says God “changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.” Texas Supreme Court affirms ban of abortion In the United States, the Supreme Court of Texas unanimously rejected a challenge to the state's pro-life laws. Between several laws, Texas outlaws nearly all abortions. The challenge sought to allow abortion in more cases like babies with disabilities.  The state's abortion ban went into effect after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022. Texas reported 67 abortions the following month and three abortions the month after that. The year before, the Lone Star state reported nearly 6,000 abortions in just one month.  21% of Protestant pastors support homosexual faux marriage Lifeway Research reports that support for faux homosexual marriage is thankfully slowing down among pastors. In 2010, 15% of Protestant pastors supported the unbiblical practice. That percentage increased to 24% in 2019, but dropped back down to 21% today. Pastors from mainline denominations were the ones who drove the increase in support for celebrating people living in vile passions. Meanwhile, Evangelical pastors have consistently opposed it since 2010. Sexual perverts are especially proud of their rebellion this month Mainstream American culture is celebrating sexually perverted lifestyles this month.  Over the weekend, 21 out of 32 National Football League teams joined the celebration on social media.  However, 11 of the football teams did not acknowledge so-called pride month. Those teams include the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, and Atlanta Falcons. Exodus 23:2 says, “You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice.” Boeing sent astronauts to International Space Station Boeing sent astronauts to space for the first time yesterday.  NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are headed for the International Space Station aboard Boeing's new Starliner spacecraft.  The program faced years of delays and technical problems.  Since 2020, Elon Musk's SpaceX has been providing NASA astronauts transportation to the International Space Station.  Colorado Christian University secures golf national title Colorado Christian University won the Division II Men's Golf Championship late last month, defeating the University of North Georgia. It's the first national title for the Christian university.  Head Coach Mark Hull said their goal is to “represent Christ in everything we do . . . we're excited to have this platform to do it.”  Adam Duncan led the Colorado Christian University Cougars to victory. Coach Hull recalled the final drive, saying, “Up by one stroke headed to the 18th hole, Adam Duncan did exactly what he needed to do, getting onto the green in two. With the Cougar faithful holding their breath in anticipation, Duncan clearly stepped up and sunk a beautiful putt from distance to birdie the hole and clinch the national championship for his team.” 14 Worldview listeners gave $2,710 And finally, toward our Friday, June 7th goal of raising $28,550 to help keep the newscast on the air, 14 Worldview listeners stepped up to the plate. Our thanks to Bianca in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga, South Africa who gave $10 as well as Jill in Saugerties, New York and Kelly in New Haven, Prince Edward Island, Canada – both of whom gave $25. We are grateful to Danielle in McPherson, Kansas, Jennifer in Evansville, Indiana, and Titus in Omaha, Nebraska – each of whom gave $50. We appreciate the generosity of Eric in Burnet, Texas, Stephen in Adrian, Oregon, and Anthony in Spring, Texas – each of whom gave $100 as well Steven in Coatesville, Pennsylvania who gave $300 and Susana in Helotes, Texas who pledged $25/month for 12 months for a gift of $300. And we thank God for an anonymous donor in Kailua Kona, Hawaii and Heather in La Grange Park, Illinois – both of whom gave $500 as well as Alan in Kalispell, Montana who pledged $50/month for 12 months for a gift of $600. Those 14 Worldview listeners gave $2,710. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (sound effect of drum roll) $5,940 (audience cheering) We have only two days left to raise $22,610.  I'm looking for 10 Worldview listeners to pledge $100 per month for 12 months for a gift of $1,200. And another 18 people to pledge $50 per month for 12 months for a gift of $600. On the night of September 8th, of 2011, tonight's 1st guest, Doug Lockhart, saw a Sasquatch for the 1st time. He was in a windmill farm, in Farmington, Pennsylvania, that was being built. At the time, he was just sitting in his car, watching the jobsite, because he was working a security job. On multiple occasions, before that night, he and other security guards had experienced Sasquatch-related activity on and around the site, but none of them had seen one. That was about to change for Doug, however. That night, he saw a Sasquatch for the 1st time and learned a valuable lesson too. You see, Doug could have stayed in his car that night and just watched the Sasquatch from the relative safety of his car, but he didn't do that. He got out, drew his weapon, and yelled at the Sasquatch. To this day, Doug will be the 1st person to tell you that he never should have done that. To become a member of Doug's Bigfoot group, called the SWPA Bigfoot Group, please go to… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1545838925646008/ Tonight's 2nd guest had his Bigfoot sighting on January 28th, of 2009. He and his wife had gone to a birthday party, in Coatesville, Virginia. It was almost midnight, and they were driving home. After driving for some time, the two of them saw a cattle pond next to the road. Next to the pond, they saw what they, at first, took to be a bear. As they got closer, though, they could see that it wasn't a bear. It was definitely not a bear! The Context of White Supremacy (C.O.W.S.) Radio Program welcomes Dr. Dennis B. Downey. An emeritus professor of history at Millersville University in Pennsylvania, Dr. Downey's been the Director of the University Honors College and has penned a number of books. He studies late 19th and early 20th century US history. We'll discuss his 1991 publication, No Crooked Death: Coatesville, Pennsylvania and the Lynching of Zachariah Walker. Gus was ignorant about this Racist murder until we read Essie Mae Washington-Williams' memoir. She begins her narrative with Walker's lynching and makes it plain that even though his death was more than a decade before she was born, it had a profound impact on her existence. We'll discuss the details of Walker's death and the months of trials that resulted in not one person being convicted. We'll also ask about Dr. Downey's work with Essie Mae's family to publish more material on their experience as J. Strom Thurmond's hidden relatives as well as his research on White Supremacy and disability - which we've discussed previously with Dr. Tommy J. Curry. Non-white listeners should pay special attention to Dr. Downey's extensive use of jargon and meaningless rhetoric. E.g., Him quoting The Doobie Brother's "Takin' It To The Streets." Importantly, Dr. Downey flagrantly lied about the content of his book. Gus questioned him about his failure to include that black residents of Coatesville took up arms to halt the lynching of a black male in 1938. Essie Mae Washington-Williams details this event in her memoir, and her step-father John Henry Washington was one of the black males who was willing to resort to counter-violence. Dr. Downey does not include one sentence about this or any other black people's counter-violence efforts. Dr. Downey also lied about his failure to cite references when discussing a suspected black spy at the one year vigil of Zachariah Walker's lynching. #WhitePeopleCantBeIgnorantAboutRacism #TheCOWS13 INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the second study session on Essie Mae Washington-Williams' Dear Senator: A Memoir by the Daughter of Strom Thurmond. **Unfortunately, a tech issue caused distortion in Gus's audio during the middle portion of the broadcast. The problem was corrected before the end of the program.** Gus was really excited to read a different book, but then Dr. J. Russell Hawkins made some likely Racist commentary about not knowing that Senator Thurmond raped a black child and omitting this sexual deviance from his book. Dr. Hawkins mentions Sen. Thurmond throughout his book, documenting the countless letters White parents mailed the lawmaker to voice their fears that their daughters would be ravaged by black school boys. Dr. Hawkins' conduct is repeated by Whites collectively. Last week, Ms. Essie Mae describes growing up in Coatesville, Pennsylvania thinking that she knew her mother and father. Then one day at 13, Carrie Butler informed her that she wasn't her "aunt," but, rather, her mother. Ms. Essie Mae details the challenges and joy of bonding with her mother while still clueless about her real father. She graphically describes the 1911 lynching of Zachariah Walker, which happened a few years before her birth and greatly traumatized her black caregivers and neighbors. She also details attending a separate school exclusively for black children and how the experience branded White superiority into her psyche.
