The meltdown. The defiance. The constant "look at me." It's easy to wonder if something is wrong. But most of the time, these aren't signs of a disorder — they're signs of development still in progress. In this episode, Dr. Greg explores what's really underneath "behavior problems," why children can't be diagnosed with personality disorders, and why the question that changes everything isn't "what's wrong with my child?" — but "what does my child need from me right now?" Key Topics: Why children cannot be diagnosed with personality disorders — and what's actually happening when their behavior looks like one How emotional regulation is learned, not innate — and what co-regulation actually looks like Why a child's dramatic, self-centered, or defiant behavior is often developmentally appropriate What it means when a child borrows a parent's nervous system — and why that steadiness is the foundation Why the patterns we see in our kids so often point back to something in us How a parent's own unhealed wounds shape the environment a child grows up inside Why admitting our own imperfection is one of the most formative things we can give our children Learn More: CatholicPsych Newsletter - Sign up to stay connected and hear the latest developments! Visit us at shapedbydog.com Is dog training about to change? In this episode, I'm sharing why a recent conversation about reinforcement-based dog training gave me something I haven't felt in a long time: hope. Looking back at an agility discussion from the mid-1990s, I reflect on how dog training shifts happen, why curiosity creates more clarity than blame or punishment, and why great results are not reserved for "special" trainers. We're talking about reinforcement, intrinsic motivation, meaningful change, and why dogs are always doing the best they can with the information we've given them in the environment we're asking them to work in In this episode, you'll hear: • About a conversation that gave me a glimmer of hope for dog training. • Why I've been feeling discouraged about the direction of dog training. • A mid-1990s agility story about weave poles, punishment, and clarity. • My thoughts on hearing "That might work for Susan Garrett, but not for the rest of us." • What I noticed listening to a balanced dog training podcast where my training was discussed. • The subtle shift happening in reinforcement-based dog training conversations. • Why ideas no longer being dismissed is a meaningful sign of change. • Karen Pryor's stages of change and how progress begins. • Why amazing results are possible for everyday dog owners. • Why great dog training is built through clear systems, not "special" trainers. • My reflections on asking myself: "Is it possible that I'm wrong?" as a dog trainer. • Why love in dog training means clarity, fairness, and understanding. • The difference between building understanding and building pressure. • Why clarity creates confidence while pressure creates compliance. • Why dogs are doing the best they can with what they understand. • How to replace blame with curiosity and better questions for our dogs. Today, host John Norlin shares a practical classroom strategy called pre-correction a proactive approach to reducing behavior correction before it's needed. This episode helps educators understand why constant correction increases conflict and disengagement, and what they can do instead to get ahead of it. He also explains how pre-correction works as a system, not just a technique, by front-loading expectations before transitions, tasks, and high-risk moments. When implemented consistently, it shifts behavioral responsibility to students over time. In this conversation, John Norlin offers important reminders for educators and leaders: Constant correction increases interpersonal conflict, which damages classroom climate and drives disengagement. Pre-correction means intentionally reminding students of expected behaviors before they enter a new setting or begin a task. Effective pre-correction requires three steps: identify the situations, define the expected behaviors, and teach students why those behaviors serve them. A Parenting Resource for Children’s Behavior and Mental Health
Parenting a child who melts down, shuts down, or pushes you away is exhausting—I know because I hear it from parents every day. You've tried sticker charts, consequences, rewards, and still your child's behavior problems keep coming back. In this episode, I'm sharing why waiting for your child's struggles to get “bad enough” is a dangerous mistake. You'll learn how to spot the early warning signs of child behavior problems, why early intervention matters, and the practical steps you can take right now to calm your child's brain and strengthen your parent-child relationship. Why do professionals tell me to “wait and see” with my child's behavior problems?I hear this all the time from parents—someone told them their child would “grow out of it.” But waiting often delays the help your child really needs.“Wait and see” is outdated advice. It often comes from well-meaning pediatricians, teachers, or family members.Delays lead to missed diagnoses like autism spectrum disorders, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).Early intervention is never wasted. Parents regret waiting, not acting.Behavior is communication. When your child struggles, it's their nervous system asking for support. It's not bad parenting—it's a dysregulated brain. Let's calm the brain first. What happens if I wait until my child's behavior collapses? When parents wait for rock bottom, the fallout touches every part of a child's life—and the road back is much harder.Deeper dysregulation: Issues like aggression, anxiety, or school refusal grow more intense and harder to untangle.Increased risk factors: Delays raise the chances of substance abuse, low self-esteem, and long-term mental health struggles.Damaged relationships: Waiting strains the parent-child relationship and can create tension between family members.Shame builds: Children begin to believe “something is wrong with me,” which deepens behavior problems and lowers self-esteem.
Are we raising strong, resilient kids—or fragile ones who crumble under pressure? In today's culture of over-pathologizing every discomfort as “trauma,” many well-meaning single moms are unknowingly disempowering their children. This episode dives into the difference between real resilience and performative fragility—and how you can lead your family from a place of strength, not fear.Learn why anti-fragility—not just resilience—is the mindset shift every single parent needs.Discover how over-labeling common childhood struggles can actually harm your child's development.Gain practical, emotionally intelligent strategies to support your kids without smothering their growth. If you're ready to trade fragility for strength and raise kids who thrive through challenges, hit play now and dive into this eye-opening conversation.Find out more about Avital Schreiber Levy here

Working in the pet behavior field isn't always rainbows and unicorns. Instead, sometimes it involves the Rainbow Bridge. This topic is often misunderstood and stigmatized as the dark side of behavior. However, in science and in life, it is essential we refrain from drawing conclusions or placing blame without weighing facts and exploring varying points of view. One perspective is that the practice of euthanasia is a painless and humane way of releasing a pet from their suffering when all other means have been exhausted, and can be considered a compassionate and selfless gift.Join The Amys and their extra special guest, researcher, and applied animal behaviorist, Miranda Hitchcock, co-founder of Every Dog Austin Behavior & Training, for a heart to heart discussion about this sensitive, but necessary topic. In this episode, I share with you some very powerful information about sleep health and your child's learning, growth, and development. Anyone who knows me knows that I love talking about sleep health. This is often one of the first things I ask students about when I do student interviews. I want to know what time they usually go to bed and wake up. I want to know if they sleep through the night or are they often awakened. This gives me a lot of insight into the problems they are having in school. This is why we take a deep dive in the science of sleep and how it might be the reason behind why your child is struggling, behaviorally or academically. A good night's rest just might just be the answer.Resource: CBS News 60-Minutes “The Science of Sleep”Link: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-science-of-sleep/*EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Non-Reward Markers have long been used in dog training, but are they really necessary? And what drives our choice to use an NRM? An NRM, sometimes called a No Reward Marker, could be a word people use to freeze a dog from making a poor choice during training or even be something like, “ah”, “no”, “hey”, “stop”. I'm covering how things have changed for me and the use of Non-Reward Markers over the years and what we can do instead. In this episode you'll hear: • Why to consider the balance of compassion and ambition. • About the impact of using non-reward markers in dog training. • Why to use the ABC model to create clarity for dogs. • Personal experiences with my dogs over the years. • Why manipulating the environment sets dogs up for shaping success. • How making a small shift in dog training prevents frustration. • Why to play the "Muffin Tin Game" and how it encourages dogs to offer behaviors. • About considering experimental design and set up. In this episode, I talk about how to deal with your teenager's disrespectful attitude. You may have had a conversation with a friend about kids these days and how much they feel entitled. Or you may have had a conversation about how all of a sudden your sweet boy or your sweet girl has become nearly impossible to deal with since entering the pre-teen or teen stage in their lives. Hey, I've been there and in some aspects I'm still going through it, so just know that you are not alone and this season in their life is going to require a lot of parental support in order to come out of it successfully. I am going to be sharing 3 ways to deal with your teenager's disrespectful behavior in order to help you get things back on track. *EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!

Visit us at shapedbydog.com There are 14 canine myths commonly accepted as truths and I'm doing some serious debunking to separate fact from fiction. For example, have you heard the myth about “Doodles never shed”? It's a myth because it's genetics. If you breed a shedding breed to a non-shedding breed, we can't predict what we're going to get. Don't miss this one, because I'm “shedding” even more light on popular lore about dogs that too many people still believe. Enjoy! In this episode we're mythbusting: • Old dogs can't learn new tricks. • Puppies outgrow naughty behavior. • Show your dog who's the boss, alpha, pack leader. • Begin puppy training at six months old. • Dogs defy, grow stubborn or ignore you near tempting distractions. • Feeding scared dogs rewards fear. • Wagging tails means happy dogs. • Yawning dogs are tired dogs. • Good dogs tolerate children. • Puppies love hugs and cuddles. • Dogs only see in black and white. • Dogs admit they're wrong with guilty looks. • Rescue dogs are damaged. • Two puppies provide companionship for one another. Visit us at shapedbydog.com How to help frightened and anxious dogs is a question I receive frequently, so I'm diving into identifying and overcoming canine fears and phobias that often lead to withdrawal or reactivity. Today's focus is on overlooked reasons dogs become fearful and what you need to know about anxiety. It's important to recognize a dog's fear triggers and the role we might play in unconsciously creating stress. In this episode you'll hear: • Overlooked triggers to many dogs' fears. • Natural dog fears during certain life stages. • The difference between alert, excited or anxious dog behavior. • How genetics predispose some breeds to fear or confidence. • That animals inherit generational trauma, too. • How events, medical conditions and lack of education can create fear in dogs. • How spaying may impact a female dog's hormones. • How gut health impacts animal behavior and emotions. • The effect of EMF's on dogs and animals. • How dogs absorb and internalize human emotions. • How to decode your dog's body language. • Why we should observe how our reactions impact our dogs. Visit us at shapedbydog.com I love kids, especially those who are keen on training dogs, so when a 10th grader named Finya sent me some wonderful positive reinforcement dog training questions for a school assignment, I said, “Let's go!” Today I'm answering her questions about shock collars, eCollars, other aversives in agility training, training dog sport champions using only positive reinforcement, plus the importance of mentors, empathy and why dog trainers should keep egos in check for our students. You'll also hear three critical tips to troubleshoot your positive reinforcement training plan when stuck. In this episode you'll hear: • My answers and advice for an aspiring positive reinforcement trainer and agility competitor. • The benefits of positive reinforcement dog training over other methodologies. • Why we don't punish or unleash frustration when dogs make mistakes. • My thoughts on which dog training tools and techniques constitute abuse. • Why some people perceive dog agility training as animal abuse. • The importance of empathy for the plight of all sentient beings. • My thoughts on those who employ shock collars, prongs and other aversives. • Why making people feel judged shuts them down to learning. • My checklist for when dog training doesn't go as planned. • The importance of having a respected and trustworthy dog training mentor. Visit us at shapedbydog.com Do you know how your dog or puppy self-regulates or dysregulates? Or how your dog self-soothes? Most dog owners don't, and it could be the root of behavioral challenges around your home. Dogs show dysregulation or self-regulation much like humans. Your dog's responses aren't the same as choosing right from wrong but a reflection of emotional regulation. Today I'm breaking down what healthy self-regulation looks like and how to recognize and help your dog's coping mechanisms for a happier, healthier co-existence. In the episode you'll hear: • What you need to know before a visiting dog arrives in your home. • How to recognize self-regulation and dysregulation in dogs. • The definition of canine self-regulation. • That dogs don't choose right from wrong. • What dysregulation looks like in dogs. • That resilience to stress is a byproduct of healthy self-regulation. • That puppies or rescue dogs cannot self-regulate instantly. • The possible signs of dysregulation puppies and dogs display. • Factors that contribute to canine dysregulation. • About my own puppy's and rescue's dysregulation. • How environment impacts self-regulation. • About normalizing certain conditions to help dogs. • What “destructive” dogs are really communicating. • The ways puppies and dogs naturally self-regulate. • About canine self-soothing behaviors and coping mechanisms. • How co-regulation facilitates self-regulation for dogs.
