Maria chats with Mark Rowlands--author, professor and chair of the philosophy department at the University of Miami.Mark's latest book The Word of Dog: What Our Canine Companions Can Teach Us About Living A Good Life which teaches us that we can live a better life if we just live our lives like dogs do with a lack of self-examination. As Mark writes "The life of a dog is a voyage and not a plan"!
In this Latest Episode RFG's John Shannon speaks with Author/Philosophy Professor Mark Rowlands about his latest book - The Word of Dog-What Our Canine Companions Can Teach Us About Living a Good Life. He is also the author of twenty-three other books, including the international bestseller The Philosopher and the Wolf. Ep #304 - A Story of Hope for This Holiday Season - featuring an interview with veteran and inspirational speaker, Jason Morgan As I close out 2024 my team and I have been talking about our theme for 2025. And we have landed on Soul Growth as our overarching message for this upcoming year. I am bringing this up now because my team and I decided to replay a show I recorded in 2021 with veteran, inspirational speaker and author Jason Morgan. His story is all about soul growth and facing life challenges with a "can do" attitude. Jason was injured in the line of duty and came home a paraplegic. During his recovery, Jason was introduced to the non-profit organization Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) and it became a life-saver for him. With their help he was paired with a service dog to assist him in living an independent life. His first canine companion service dog, Napal, is the one featured in his book, A Dog Called Hope. I strongly encourage you to listen to the words of this very special man and his story or courage, hope and inspiration. In June of 1999, Jason Morgan was deployed to South America on a counter narcotics mission. His life was changed forever in the remote area of Ecuador when during an altercation with drug traffickers, his driver lost control of their SUV causing it to launch off the road into a steep ravine. Jason was ejected from the car and suffered a crushed spine. He was left for dead, drowning with his face submerged in swampy water, but then a miracle occurred. An American missionary working on radio towers in the area came upon the scene and saved Jason's life. Two months later Jason awoke from a coma with no immediate recollection of what had happened. He was told by doctors it was a miracle he had survived. However, as a result of his extensive injuries he was also told he would never walk again. Jason has since developed a special creed to offer hope to others who have been tragically injured: “I've tried to live my life by offering hope and renewed strength to those who have suffered a tragic injury or disability. Life may not be better or worse, but it will be different and I want to show them by example that you can live a productive life. And a life of purpose no matter what condition you're in. You need to focus on your ability, not your disability.” Today, Jason Morgan continues to use his story to motivate groups and individuals. Discussions are now underway for the book to become a major motion picture. Jason remarried on April 24, 2021 and has five boys. Jason, Kim and his dog, Yago now reside in Nevada, Texas. Vanessa Woods is the Director of Duke University's Puppy Kindergarten program, which studies what qualities are important in becoming a great service dog. The program is funded by the National Institute of Health and works with puppies from Canine Companions, the largest service dog provider in the United States. While this is primarily intended to learn what makes the best service dogs, it has also been informative about all dogs. Her husband, Brian Hare, is the Founder of the Duke Canine Cognition Center, the first academic program dedicated to studying dogs in the country. Together they co-wrote a new book, called Puppy Kindergarten, where they take the valuable lessons learned from their years of research studying service dogs as the ideal model for how dogs live with us in today's culture. They share tips, activity ideas, and more insights on for all dog parents raising puppies.Their goal is to help everyone develop a happier and healthier relationship with their dogs from a young age, which carries on throughout the rest of their lives. For more information about the episode, guest, and featured links: www.dogsavethepeople.com/episodes/vanessa-woods-2024
Alex Hutchinson is a Professional Service Dog Trainer for Canine Companions who has just participated in the new Netflix Documentary, “Inside the Mind of a Dog” (trust me you don't want to miss this so make sure you watch it). She talks to us about her fascinating career and what it is like to film a Netflix show.
In the wild and wooly world of dog behavior, research and education there are lots of folks promoting themselves as experts. Blessed few of them actually are. And then there are those whose legitimate scientific research has grounding in evolutionary anthropology and canine cognition. One of those folks is Vanessa Woods - she's an accomplished author and her most recent book Puppy Kindergarten: The New Science of Raising a Great Dog - lays some very important information about the world of Service Dogs. In this wide ranging conversation about what a Service Dog *actually* is, how the misinterpretations and misunderstandings confuse matters, and most importantly how - by using SCIENCE - we can better identify the dogs that will be the best candidates for Service work at an earlier age. You can find more about Vanessa's work through Canine Companions and see a fascinating example of one of the cognitive tests they use to gauge a dog's potential In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it's time for radically authentic conversation. Conscious communication is simple, but often isn't easy. That's why Cathy Brooks created Talk, Unleashed – a weekly podcast of radically honest conversation about — everything. Whether her own musings or in conversation with industry leaders, each episode invites curiosity. Curiosity not about what people do, but why they do it. Who they are and what makes them tick. It's about digging underneath to reveal the thing that is most true - that we are more alike than we are not. A mix of solo episodes where Cathy shares her insights and experience or Cathy engaged in conversation with fascinating humans doing amazing things. No matter the format - it's unvarnished, radically honest and entirely unleashed. This podcast compliments Unleashed Leadership, the coaching business through which Cathy works with symphony orchestras, corporate clients, and individuals to help them unleash and untether their leadership and connect with others in a way that truly engages. #brutalhonesty #radicalhonesty #consciouscommunication #leadership #Conversation #connection #TalkUnleashed #fiercecompassion #UnleashedConversation #UnleashedLeadership #FixYourEndofTheLeash

Job Tales - I interview professionals to help you become who you wish to be
Job Tales is a podcast where you can peruse all kinds of jobs as they are told in a 25-minute interview by professionals around the world. I was watching "Inside The Mind of a Dog" on Netflix, and I saw several dog trainers talk about their amazing job, which consists of training dogs into becoming service dogs for humans with disabilities. I immediately thought: I have to interview them! Canine Companions is the company I reached out to, and they were kind enough to grant me an interview with two of their current apprentice instructors, Sarah Brinck and Anika Schenkel. Do you want to know what a dog trainer does? Then listen to this episode of Job Tales! Yours, Laura Leoncini.

Send us a Text Message.Imagine discovering the key to unlocking new levels of connection and learning for those with autism—a key covered in fur and filled with unconditional love. That's exactly what AJ Cullen Langell brings to light in our heartwarming episode as she recounts the story of Autism Barks. AJ, a special education teacher, witnessed firsthand the incredible influence her dog, Ella, had on her students, catalyzing the creation of an initiative that intertwines her passion for canines with her dedication to the autism community. We delve into the distinctions among service dogs, therapy dogs, and emotional support animals, unraveling the specialized roles each plays in supporting individuals with autism.Through AJ's lens, we're taken on a journey that explores not only the enchanting bond between humans and dogs but also the intricate process of tailoring a service dog's training to the needs of their autistic companions. Our conversation traverses the complexities involved in acquiring a service dog, from the hefty financial commitment to the extensive training, often spanning up to two years. Moreover, we examine the delicate balance of ensuring the well-being of both the individual and their canine helper, debunking the myth that service dogs are a panacea. AJ's experiences illuminate the transformative capacities of these remarkable creatures and the dedication required to craft such finely attuned partnerships. Our exchange concludes with a candid discussion on the power of advocacy and research in animal-assisted interventions, aimed at broadening acceptance and understanding within educational and medical circles. Sharing stories of triumph and trial, AJ and I underscore the necessity of combatting biases and fostering a more inclusive view of autism. By weaving connections with organizations that share our vision, we advocate for recognizing therapy animals as invaluable allies in the lives of those on the autism spectrum. We invite you to tune in and perhaps even share your own encounters with the healing presence of pets in the journey with autism.https://tonymantor.comhttps://Facebook.com/tonymantorhttps://instagram.com/tonymantorhttps://twitter.com/tonymantorhttps://youtube.com/tonymantormusicintro/outro music bed written by T. Having grown up with a sibling (my twin brother, to be exact) who has autism was one of the biggest things that ever happened to my family. In the 80's and 90's, there weren't that many resources available for parents who had kids with disabilities. My parents did the best that they could in raising us, but there were a lot of struggles. Now that I'm a mother myself, I can only imagine all of the days and nights they worried about my brother and his future as they looked for therapies and support. My brother has been a major blessing in our lives, and I believe he has taught us more than we have taught him. Thankfully, our world has progressed and is doing a lot more for disabled people and their families. Today's guest even wrote a book about parenting a disabled child and what parents need to know. I'm excited for you to listen to this episode. In my opinion, it's not just for parents who have disabled children. This episode is something everyone should listen to. Who is Kelley Coleman? Kelley Coleman is a feature film development executive turned author who is active in the disability advocacy community. She serves on committees for Children's Hospital Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and Canine Companions. Her book Everything No One Tells You About Parenting a Disabled Child: Your Guide to the Essential Systems, Services, and Supports stems from her own parenting experience, giving parents the tools to spend less time navigating the stuff and more time loving their kids exactly as they are. Kelley is a mom to two amazing boys, one of whom has multiple disabilities (including a yet-undiagnosed genetic syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, CVI, epilepsy, and more). She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, two boys, and her son's service dog. What Did We Discuss? In this episode, we're chatting with Kelley Coleman about everything you need to know about parenting a disabled child. As I mentioned, having a twin brother with autism, this topic is very near and dear to my heart, and it was a great conversation. In this episode, Kassie Jo Baron (University of Tennessee at Martin) and Karah M. Mitchell (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) investigate the popularity and representation of “sagacious” Newfoundland dogs in nineteenth-century American literature. The episode begins with an overview of animal studies as a theoretical framework for analyzing the relationship between animals, history, and literature. Keeping this framework in mind, Kassie and Karah investigate how and why Newfoundlands, or “Newfies,” became so ubiquitous across the nineteenth-century United States. The Newfoundland's association with loyalty, water rescue, and maritime industry means it's no surprise that they appeared in the public and private writings of Lewis and Clark, Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe, and Emily Dickinson. This episode ultimately theorizes the conditions that led to the rise and fall of Newfoundlands' popularity in the nineteenth century–what they represented and how they were viewed–and their impact on literary production.
