In this essential training breakdown, Ed Frawley explains the five progressive Rules of Play that transform tug from chaotic wrestling into a powerful obedience and engagement tool. These rules must be taught in order: first, building genuine desire for the toy by sparking prey and play drive; second, teaching the retrieve so the dog learns that bringing the toy back continues the game rather than ending it; third, adding the "out" command at the right developmental stage to avoid suppressing drive; fourth, introducing impulse control so the dog waits for permission before grabbing; and fifth, finding the perfect balance based on the dog's individual temperament—dominant dogs need stricter structure while sensitive dogs require more freedom to build confidence. Ed emphasizes that intensity of play must be adjusted to each dog's personality: possessive dogs get shorter wins to prevent over-possession, while less intense dogs benefit from longer, more active sessions to build drive. When all five rules work in harmony, tug becomes far more than just play—it creates a dog who is motivated, responsive, and sees the handler as the ultimate source of reward and fun. | Links mentioned: The Power of Playing with Your Dog: https://leerburg.com/221.htm | The Power of Training Dog with Markers: https://leerburg.com/marker-dvd.php

Beyond The Outer Realm Special Feature Michelle Welcomes Very Special Guest Eira Wulfnothsson Date: October 28th, 2025 EP: 633 TOPIC: The Rescued Becomes The Rescuer- Eira Wulfnothsson joins me to discuss her incredible journey - Born into a Luciferian World, decades long Occult Practitioner. Her path changed after an amazing Experience with The Blessed Mother. She is now in service to Christ! Christ as a Spiritual Warrior. This is truly a story which needs to be told! Contact for the show - theouterrealmcontact@gmail.com About Eira Wulfnothsson - Eira was a practicing occultist for over four decades. Born into a Luciferian world, no one in her family was Christian for generations; she was taken to Bohemian Grove at age 3. Her education was just as unusual; she attended a traditional mystery school 30 years before the internet existed; she attended in person. There she learned of the laws and forces at work in the cosmos both Holy and Unholy. Five years ago, she had an extraordinary experience with Mary, Our Blessed Mother. She was called to become a traditional Roman Catholic and is now a consecrated Marian who has taken a life long vow of celibacy. She regularly prays “The Office of The Dead” for the Holy Souls in purgatory. Today Eira works on the team of a Mandated Roman Catholic Exorcist and consults on classical angelology/demonology based on her unique upbringing, studies and experiences. In service to Christ she currently hosts a youtube channel where she speaks of her unusual journey, spiritual warfare, and her understanding of God's cosmos. Eira's YouTube channel is: Pitbulls of The Lord Spiritual Warfare Channel. Eira is also the author of two books: “From Occultist to Christian; The Devil's Mistake” - The Devil's Mistake is a dissertation on Evil and Magicka; their ancient origins, how they are at work in the world and how to inoculate yourself against them. The work is written through the eyes of a life-long practicing occultist who became a devoted Roman Catholic after a mystical experience with Mary, Mother of God. Within the manuscript the author illuminates a vast array of metaphysical topics based on her classical occult education in order to assist Christians in identifying the many occult rituals worked against them via the media, political and public ceremonies, as well as staged catastrophic events. These “rituals,” or operations within a system of Magicka, are performed in order to blind, influence and control humanity; clarity is given to the elite Luciferian mind and agenda. Also, readers will learn the crucial reason their consent is always required when evil is worked against them, what that looks like, and the “who” that requires it and “why.” The author also addresses the ever-changing UFO/UAP narrative demonstrating that this phenomenon identifies more as classical fallen angel activity than advanced terrestrial or alleged extraterrestrial technology. Readers will also be given understanding regarding “places of power” used since the beginning of time by ancient magicians and sorcerers to bring “these gods” (fallen angels) into our world physically and why 100 percent of our world-wide sacred sites are built upon them based on both the physical and metaphysical sciences. Lastly, readers will come to understand how God is always at work to counter these evils, why He sometimes allows them, and how we've been called to assist Him within this great battle of good versus evil. A battle, in fact, that was already won over two thousand years ago. What if “senior” didn't mean the end—but the beginning of a whole new chapter with your dog? Today we're joined by Helen St. Pierre, dog trainer and founder of Old Dogs Go to Helen Rescue. What started as a way to help dogs get adopted through training turned into a lifelong passion for giving senior dogs the love, dignity and care they deserve. Helen reminds us that senior does not mean the end — our older dogs can still live full, joyful lives (and yes, even learn new tricks!). We talk about how to recognize important senior dog behavior changes, shifts in tolerance toward children or other dogs, and physical signs that tell us it's time to adjust care. Helen also shares practical, compassionate tips for making home adjustments for senior dogs—from mobility support to creating safer spaces—so our pets stay comfortable as they age. And when it's time to face difficult decisions, Helen walks us through her three-pronged quality of life scale and what she calls “quality of death,” helping us advocate for our dog at the vet office and approach medical decisions with clarity and love. Whether you share your life with a senior dog now or want to be ready for the golden years ahead, Helen's guidance will help ensure your dog ages gracefully. What happens when one woman believes so deeply in the power of dogs to change lives that she builds a program to prove it — and keeps it alive even after the state stops funding it? Content Note: In this episode, there are mentions of child abuse and neglect and a juvenile case involving murder and the death of a dog. These topics are discussed only in passing, but we recognize they may be sensitive for some listeners. In this episode, we'll meet Joan Dalton, author of the book Second Chances: The Transformative Relationship Between Incarcerated Youth and Shelter Dogs. Joan is the founder of Project POOCH, a program pairing teens in juvenile detention with shelter dogs. What started as an idea grew into a transformative program that not only rehabilitates dogs in need of homes but also teaches young people the skills and compassion they need to heal and move forward. Joan & I discuss how the program began, the life-changing impacts she's witnessed and the resilience it took to keep the program going when funding was pulled. From trauma to trust, you'll hear how Project POOCH creates powerful paths to healing, empathy and redemption — for both humans and animals. Juvenile justice is something we should all care about, because these youths will return to society as adults. We have an opportunity — and a responsibility — to help them grow into contributing members of society. When we give people and animals the tools to heal, the results can transform lives and communities. Chad Orzel is a physicist and science writer who has been blogging for nearly twenty-five years. He's the author of four books, Breakfast with Einstein: The Exotic Physics of Everyday Objects, How to Teach Quantum Physics to Your Dog, How to Teach Relativity to Your Dog, Eureka: Discovering Your Inner Scientist and A Brief History of Timekeeping. The last is a mix of cultural and engineering history, archeology and physics, and reflects Orzel's wide interests as reflected in his Substack, Counting Atoms. In this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib surveys the state of physics communication and science, as well as our broader culture's relationship with academia. Orzel and Razib first discuss the massive success of physicist-turned-YouTuber Sabine Hossenfelder. Emerging from academic physics and associated with Lee Smolin and the Perimeter Institute, Hossenfelder has shifted from skepticism of mainstream theories like string theory to arguing that academic science as a whole must be restructured. Orzel also notes that contrarian or heterodox views in popular areas such as astrophysics and particle physics receive much more attention than applied fields like solid-state physics. Razib and Orzel reflect on how science communication has changed over the past two decades, moving from the text-driven blog era before 2010 to the rise of podcasts and video. They also discuss the many technological applications of physics in the 21st century, particularly in battery technology, an area that is transforming daily life but rarely serves as fodder for glossy popular-press treatments. In the second half of the podcast, Orzel considers how science, and academia more broadly, have navigated the adversarial stance of the Trump administration. Razib asks whether institutional science, shaped in the post–World War II era, may be due for a major transformation, or whether it is even approaching the end of its line. Finally, Orzel addresses whether academics can regain broad public trust in the wake of the extreme politicization of the 2010s.

What would you do if buying your dream home meant giving up your dog? In 2018, Cait Conroy and her husband were forced to confront Prince George's County, Maryland's decades-old “pit bull” breed ban when it threatened their beloved Poptart. That experience sparked Cait's ongoing advocacy — not just for her own dog, but for all dogs and pet parents impacted by this harmful law. In this episode, Cait and Ilona from the PG Pet Unity Project share the shocking history of why “pit bull” dogs were banned in PG County in the 1990s — and the deeper consequences this law has had on families, the animal welfare system and the dogs. From wasted taxpayer dollars to ineffective public safety outcomes, we dig into why breed-specific legislation fails families, communities and dogs. But there's hope: we'll talk about recently proposed Pit Bull Pilot Program, why momentum is growing to finally overturn the BSL now, and what it would mean for Maryland to leave this discriminatory policy behind. Dr. Chad Orzel is the R. Gordon Gould Associate Professor of Physics at Union College. He is also author of the popular science books How to Teach Physics to Your Dog, How to Teach Relativity to Your Dog, Eureka: Discovering Your Inner Scientist, and the soon-to-be-released book Breakfast with Einstein: The Exotic Physics of Everyday Objects. In addition, Chad regularly contributes blog articles for Forbes Magazine. Chad studies ultracold atoms to improve our understanding of atomic physics. He uses lasers to drop the temperature of samples of atoms to just millionths or billionths of a degree above absolute zero. At these very cold temperatures, the atoms move very slowly, and interesting quantum effects arise. Free time can be hard to find with two kids and a puppy at home, but Chad enjoys hanging out with his family, reading science fiction and fantasy books, and playing basketball when he has the chance. He received his B.A. in Physics from Williams College and his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from the University of Maryland. Before joining the faculty at Union College, Chad conducted postdoctoral research in the Physics Department at Yale University. In our interview, Chad shared his experiences from his life and science.

In this episode, we dive into two topics that might just save you stress—or even your life. Dog Training: Why a “Growl” Speaks Louder Than Words First, we explore the importance of putting a "handle" on your dog or puppy at a young age. Discover how using a natural, mother-like growl can teach respect, set boundaries, and prevent long-term behavioral issues—without yelling or punishment. Setting Boundaries Early with Your Dog or Puppy Putting a “handle” on your dog or puppy at an early age is critical for establishing authority and structure. A dog that respects boundaries grows into a confident, balanced companion. Why a Growl Works Using a low, natural growl as a correction tool mimics the way a mother dog disciplines her pups. It's instinctual, effective, and avoids yelling or physical punishment. Growling is a natural, recognizable tone for dogs. It grabs attention and commands respect without fear. This technique works best when started young, alongside leash work inside the home. Tornado Season 2025: Camping, Shelters & Staying Safe Tornado Activity Is Surging in 2025 Next we shift focus to Tornado Season 2025, which is already more intense than 2024. With 1,296 tornado reports as of June—well above the historical average—we break down what every family or camping group needs to know. From finding shelter at campgrounds (or lack thereof) to understanding the difference between a Tornado Watch and Warning, this is a must-listen for anyone traveling, camping, or living in storm-prone areas. Notable Trends: Iowa: 100 tornadoes in June 2024 → only 16 in June 2025. North Dakota: 2 tornadoes in June 2024 → 34 in June 2025. Whether you're raising a pup or planning your next outdoor trip, this episode brings practical tips and critical awareness together in one powerful conversation. What if the supplements in your cabinet aren't doing what you think they are?In this eye-opening conversation, I'm joined by Amy Peacock, founder of Earth's Secret—a thoughtful supplement brand rooted in transparency, sustainability, and the wisdom of nature. We explore what to look for (and what to avoid) when it comes to human supplements, how to know if your body is actually absorbing them, and the often-overlooked importance of quality over quantity. As we talk through Amy's personal healing journey and starting Earth's Secret, I also draw the connections to our dogs. Because so many of the same questions apply:✨ Does this supplement actually support the whole being?✨ Is it necessary, or is it just marketing?✨ Is it aligned with our values—and our bodies' wisdom?Whether you're navigating your own healing path or supporting your dog's wellbeing, this episode is a grounding reminder to pause and ask: *What am I really feeding here?*In this episode:* Amy's story of healing and the inspiration behind Earth's Secret* The hidden ingredients and common pitfalls in many human supplements* How to know when a supplement is needed—and when it might be doing more harm than good* Why “natural” doesn't always mean safe or effective* Parallels between human and canine supplement choices* What conscious supplementation *really* looks likeThis conversation will leave you feeling more informed, more empowered, and more connected to the deeper ‘why' behind what we give ourselves and our dogs.Learn more: https://earthsecret.comhttps://instagram.com/earths.secret

Have you ever thought about your time with your dog as a chapter of your life? For teacher, speaker, and lifelong journaler Patricia Eagle, her story is told in ten chapters – with each devoted to a dog who changed her life. In her new book, Dog Love Stories: The Canines Who Changed Me, Patricia reflects on the love, lessons, and legacies each dog left behind. While some chapters are long and others short, all are deeply meaningful. In this episode, Patricia & I explore the many ways our dogs support us – especially through life's hardest times. She shares how creating rituals around loss has helped her honor and heal from the passing of her dogs, and how these moments can also become celebrations of joy and connection. We also talk about the silly songs we make up for our dogs (yes, Patricia sings one!) and what it means to be a respectful Pet Parent – especially around those in our lives who may not be dog lovers. Trigger Warning: This episode includes themes of pet loss and grief, as well as mentions of the deaths of a spouse and child, and childhood sexual abuse. Send Mary a text! Movement specialist Mary Debono reveals why forcing change in your horse, dog, or yourself often backfires—and what to do instead. Drawing from the Feldenkrais MethodⓇ and the Debono Moves approach, Mary explains how the nervous system's primary job is protection. When we try to "fix" movement patterns, we trigger defensive responses that reinforce the very habits we're trying to change. Send Mary a text! Discover the counterintuitive "do the easy side badly" strategy that transforms movement without forcing change. Learn why intentionally making your easy side feel difficult helps your challenging side improve naturally through neuroplasticity and contrast learning.Have you ever noticed that one side of your body moves more smoothly than the other? Maybe your right leg slides effortlessly while your left feels sticky, or you turn more easily in one direction than the other. Your horses and dogs have these asymmetries, too. Most people try to fix the "harder" side by pushing, stretching, and straining. But renowned movement expert Mary Debono reveals a revolutionary approach that flips this conventional wisdom on its head.Key TakeawaysThe Core Strategy: Instead of working harder on your challenging side, intentionally make your easy side more difficult through playful variations, then return to the challenging side—it will feel dramatically easier. Why It Works: Your nervous system learns through contrast. By giving your brain information about what doesn't work (through temporary variations), it better understands what does work and naturally improves coordination. The Pressure Problem: Trying to fix, stretch, or force improvements creates anxiety in the nervous system and often reinforces the original problem through defensive restrictions.Mindset Shift: Change from asking "How do I fix this?" to "What can I learn from what's already easy?" This transforms your entire approach from correction to exploration.Natural Learning: Your nervous system wants to move toward health and wholeness. When you create the right environment with curiosity and contrast, improvement happens organically without force.Resources:Get your free videos on Connected Breathing and Rhythm Circles with your horse.

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Can you really stop a dog from chasing deer or anything else without an e-collar? Yes, and I'm sharing how. There's an ongoing commentary that it's impossible to train certain dogs, especially those with high prey drive, to come when called using only reinforcement-based methods. Now, those of us who are reinforcement-based trainers know that it's absolutely possible. The secret lies in understanding the Canine Predatory Motor Sequence. Rather than trying to stop dogs at the end of the sequence when it's way too late, we focus on the early stages and what we want our dogs to do. In this episode, you'll hear: • Why some say reinforcement-based training alone can't stop high prey drive dogs. • How the canine predatory motor sequence works and why it matters for your dog's behavior • Why suppressing behavior isn't training, and what I do instead. • The three common ways people deal with behavior problems and which one really works. • How I use predatory redirection to interrupt chase drive. • A real-life example of Prophet ignoring deer just 15 feet away. • How we changed Tater Salad's behavior using relationship-building games. • Special opportunity to join my Home School the Dog program. • Why head halters can act like emergency brakes when you need them. • How I redirect Kim's rescue dog Waffles from distractions to focus back to me and what you can take away from it. Whether you're looking for something fun to do with your dog or if you need help with a behavior issue, Control Unleashed might be exactly the training class you're looking for. Today, I'm joined by Angie Haines Madden of DogSpeak Training — the trainer my dogs & I have been working with through online Control Unleashed classes over the past several months. A former zookeeper, Angie shares what drew her to the Control Unleashed methodology (developed by Leslie McDevitt) and how it shapes her approach to dog training. I'll be honest — I was skeptical about taking an online training class at first. But it didn't take long to see why Angie's style of teaching works so well. Together, we talk about the power of learning from others, why recording your training sessions is so important (hint: it's all about body language!), and how transformative these skills can be. While my original goal was simply to find something fun to do with Nessie, I quickly discovered that Control Unleashed offers so much more than just games. Angie and I discuss how adaptable the Pattern Games are for a variety of real-world situations, and I share some of the ways we've incorporated them into our daily lives. You'll also get to hear an impromptu coaching session, as Angie helps me work through a challenge Nessie and I are still facing — and why teaching your dog to relax is more important than you may realize.
