Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, things take an upsetting turn on Flight Through Entirety, as Bill is beset, in succession, by a nervous gunman, the master in latex (as usual), the passage of time, a creepy surgeon, and narrative inevitability. Also, the Masters are having an end-of-series party with the Cybermen again. It's World Enough and Time. Notes and links For all four of us, the special effect shot of the hole in Bill's chest is familiar from the Robert Zemeckis film Death Becomes Her (1992), in which Meryl Streep makes a similar hole in Goldie Hawn, which is for several reasons more hilarious and enjoyable. Until this point, the canonical version of the Genesis of the Cyberman had been the Big Finish audio play Spare Parts (2002), written by Marc Platt and starring Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton. It's really brilliant, and not very expensive, which means you should definitely put it on your list. And finally, the title of this story comes from Andrew Marvell's poem “To His Coy Mistress” (1681), in which the poet imagines how he would love his mistress if their time was unlimited, and then describes the alacrity with which they should love each other, given that time is fleeting. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.com and Todd is at @toddbeilby.bsky.social; Simon is on X as @simonmoore72. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow Flight Through Entirety on Bluesky, as well as on Mastodon, X and Facebook. Our website is at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll make you wait years and years for Episode 298. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. Its first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. Tread Perilously begins a cornucopia of sci-fi with the most infamous episode of Torchwood: "Cyberwoman." When Ianto Jones invites a specialist in Cyber tech to Torchwood 3, all hell breaks loose. It turns out he's been keeping his partially Cyber-ized girlfriend on life support since the Battle of Canary Wharf. He's using a Cyber-conversion machine to do it. And none of the others know about it. Of course, Cybermen are going to Cyberman, but will a "Cyberwoman" also seek to make all organic life like her? Also: what will Captain Jack Harkness do when he learns Ianto has been keeping a woman prisoner in their basement? Justin faces his first -- and possibly last -- episode of Torchwood. He learns almost immediately why Erik has been putting this one off for so long. Episode writer Chris Chibnall is, once again, in the hot seat. Erik is accused of being a David Tennant fan. The weeds lead to some darker places, but also to discussion of The Tick, the Noldor, and more. Justin tries to make sense of Torchwood as a concept.  He also notes Erik's "angry" British accent. A surprise Burn Gorman appears! White Water Summer is used to prove a point. The viscosity of Ianto becomes important and Justin suggests Torchwood isn't sexy enough.

Brace yourselves, heathens! In this episode of Sacrilegious Discourse, we wade through the murky waters of Ezekiel Chapter 47. We start with a quick recap of Chapter 46, where God was busy plotting entrance and exit strategies for the temple, and priests were donning their special eating clothes to dine away from the common folk. Yes, you heard that right, special eating clothes. We laugh our way through the absurdity of these rituals, imagining priests with bibs and designated shirts for eating, dishwashing, and even pooping. We even challenge our listeners to share their own "eating clothes" on social media, but please, no nudes! In Chapter 47, we encounter the mysterious Cyberman (or Golden Man, if you prefer) who leads Ezekiel through a progressively deeper river, from ankle-deep to a raging torrent no one can cross. We discuss the bizarre logistics of this divine waterway and ponder its significance. Is it a metaphor? A literal flood? Who knows! As we delve deeper, we find ourselves in a new Eden with trees that bear fruit every month and have leaves for healing. But wait, there's more! God redivides the land among the twelve tribes of Israel, including the Levites who finally get their own plot. Foreigners residing among the Israelites are also granted land, marking a surprising shift in policy.Join us for this wild ride through Ezekiel's watery visions, divine land grants, and our usual irreverent banter. The Devouring by Lisa McMullin (1 part) Lady Audacity Montague - strong-minded and unconventional - has been gazing at the stars. But unfortunately for her - and everybody she knows - they've been staring back. She's made inadvertent, intergalactic eye contact with a malevolence known as The Devouring. Now it wants to consume her. But Audacity is already consumed. With rage. The Great Cyber-War Part 1 by Tim Foley (1 part) The Great Cyber-War. Humanity and her allies versus the horror of the Cybermen. This is no place for the Doctor to take his new best friend. But on the Aurum, the war seems far away. Tread Perilously continues to celebrate Doctor Who at 60 with a look at the 2005 story simply titled "Dalek." When The Doctor intercepts a distress signal a mile under the Utah desert, he and Rose materialize in the vault of Henry san Statten, a rich tech entrepreneur with a taste for the extraterrestrial. His collection includes a Slitheen hand, a Cyberman helmet, and one live specimen: a damaged Dalek. The Doctor responds with fear, shock, and even bloodlust. Rose, though, makes an interesting choice in her first interaction with The Doctor's greatest foe. Also, some kid who's too handsome for his own good gets involved. Erik shares the Gallifrey One guest list -- which happens to feature a timely name. He also shares the Doctor Who Magazine rankings for Ninth Doctor episodes. It leads, naturally, into the weeds. Justin calls out Rose's fashion choices. Bane makes a surprising appearance. The Cybermen get a well-deserved ribbing. The pair try to determine who van Statten is based on. Pronunciation Corner surrounds Ms. Goddard and various ways to say "written." Erik tries to recall why Bruno Langley was a big deal in 2005. The big change to The Doctor is discussed and the moment the Internet went insane is determined.
