Ciaran Saward gives an appealing narration of Maiga Doocy's fantasy. AudioFile's Emily Connelly tells host Jo Reed about the fun of this magical adventure. Leo, a rakish scriver from a privileged gentry family, and Sebastian Grimm, a studious caster whose parents are farmers, are rivals in their fifth year at the Fount, a school of magic. After Grimm unwittingly casts a spell on Leo that compels him to do whatever Grimm says, they eventually decide to enter the Unquiet Wood, full of monstrous plants and animals, in search of a counterspell. Saward's characterization of the mysterious sorcerer they encounter there is a delight. Read our review of the audiobook at our website. Published by Hachette Audio. For this episode, I spoke to Wendy Salkin, a philosophy professor at Stanford University, about informal political representatives: people who speak or act on behalf of groups in the political sphere without being elected to do so. Familiar examples include Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malala Yousafzai, and Greta Thunberg.Informal political representatives raise awareness of issues and bring about political change, often achieving things that people with more formal power cannot or do not. But their existence also raises some ethical questions. Do they need to be authorised? Can they be held accountable? What if the things they say diverge from the views of the people they represent?Professor Salkin's book on this subject, Speaking for Others: The Ethics of Informal Political Representation, was released by Harvard University Press on July 9th.Relevant reading:Alcoff, L. Guest host Meredith Jaffé chats to Tulmur author and publishing all-rounder Melanie Saward about her debut novel, Burn, her bumpy path to publication, writing intergenerational trauma, sensitivity reading and more.  Melanie was born in a little town called Burnie in lutruwita (Tasmania), grew up in an even smaller town called Perth (also in lutruwita) and was dragged kicking and screaming (sorry Mum and Dad) to the Brisbane suburb of Bracken Ridge when she was fifteen. She has worked in one of the big 4 publishing houses; been a freelance editor on books, audiobooks, and literary magazines; been a marketer and publicity person; a researcher; and a sensitivity reader. These days Mel spends most of her time teaching university students about the Australian industry at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).  Pam also gives an update on her writing week, and has news about a new bonus for Patreon supporters. This conversation is jam packed with so much gold for both readers and writers. Grab a cuppa, or your preferred beverage, sit back and enjoy this chat between Meredith and Melanie.   SHOW NOTES: Writes4Women www.writes4women.com Facebook @writes4women Twitter / Instagram @w4wpodcast   W4W Patreon https://www.writes4women.com/support-us-on-patreon   Melanie Saward Website : click here Facebook: click here Instagram: click here   Meredith Jaffé Website : click here Facebook: click here Instagram: click here Storyfest: click here   Pamela Cook www.pamelacook.com.au Facebook: click here Twitter: click here  Instagram: click here     This episode produced by Pamela Cook  on unceded Dharawal land.    Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/writes4women?fan_landing=trueSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How much pain are you willing to take to live the life you want? Imagine how your business and life can turn around once you overcome your limiting beliefs. In this episode, John and Michelle talk about breaking a belief system and helping change your mindset toward success. You'll also get insights into how courage and discipline separate you from being average to what you want to achieve!     Show Notes 1:16 Michelle's background Early on in her career, it did not seem to be good for Michelle. She was laid off by her realtor and does not want to work in a cubicle or return to bartending. She has a real estate license, and she's got a college degree and at some point; she did not know what to do with these. Either way, she still showed up to her job, treating it like a real job, and fast forward 21 years later, she was able to achieve what she wanted.    4:43 The pain that you can tolerate Both John and Michelle agreed that sometimes it was not realizing what you want, but it's the tenacity to show up and tolerate what you do not want that you can figure things out. How much pain are you willing to take in order to live the life you want after all those things?   7:01 The dark side helps out too Michelle elaborated that your dark side is there to help you just as much as the light side. The dark side can be in the form of unemployment or doing what you do not want and all of these things are messages and guidance that are going to gear you toward where you're supposed to go and what you're supposed to be doing.   11:58 Forming your belief system When you know you did not want to go back to a particular situation that challenges your thinking and you form a belief system around it. This drives your actions that will ultimately lead to all the results that you have in your life.   12:39 Breaking limiting beliefs The biggest thing to break those limiting beliefs is to get curious. If you're curious about other people - what are their motivations, what makes them tick - and start asking those questions, you can start to guide them down the path that's going to help them grow and succeed.   16:00 On being a coach Too many coaches push their agendas on other people, but on the contrary, it's not really about the coach. A great coach can bring the whole tools, frameworks, and principles and none of them really matters until you get clear what the individual is trying to achieve.   23:53 Challenging your mindset Challenging your mindset is one of the hardest things to do. If you don't have a coach or mentor, you need to have somebody that's going to give you hard advice that you might not want to hear because sometimes it's even hard to see it for yourself. It is hard to break the habit of being yourself.   28:39 Discipline comes from courage It takes courage to be disciplined. The most disciplined - to their thoughts, to how you show up every day, to their actions, to follow through even on the days they don't want to follow through - that's the separator from being the average to whatever level you want to achieve.   30:05 How discipline carries over to your goals Consistent action equals results. Valleys are going to come, bumps will happen along the road. It means you're being tested and the challenge is to have the discipline to continue to show up whatever happens. You need to decide and have the courage and discipline to keep going. That's when things that you wouldn't imagine will show up to help you in pursuit of that goal.   34:12 Why do people fall short of their goals People fail to achieve their goals because they don't think through the amount of time it will take and how much are they willing to invest for that outcome. Confidence is a collection of wins. John loves micro wins because if we're getting micro wins every day, that builds a bigger confidence, and that's where the momentum keeps going.   42:05 Running in the right direction Humility is the defining trait of whether a person is coachable. You have to have enough humility to know that you needed to be held accountable, and you also needed that guidance and coaching if you desire to be better. You have to build the framework of what it is that you want and you have to have the right people guiding you to make sure that you're running in the right direction.

What do you do when the description on the box doesn't match up to what's inside? How do you respond when what's been promised isn't quite what's delivered? Melanie Saward found that that was the case for her when it came to matters of faith. While she saw an amazing depth to the faith of those written about in the Christian scriptures, she found her own faith to be shallow. Her latest book, Deep Faith Resilient Faith – Curing Shallow Christianity, is her journey to discover whether it's possible to experience and live the kind of faith she saw in the pages of the Bible. *Shortlisted for the Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year Award* Ben Coates, author of Why the Dutch Are Different, cycles the Rhine river from mouth to source, discovering the mark it makes on Europe. The Rhine is one of the world's greatest rivers. Once forming the outer frontier of the Roman Empire, it flows 800 miles from the social democratic playground of the Netherlands, through the industrial and political powerhouses of Germany and France, to the wealthy mountain fortresses of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. For five years, Ben Coates lived alongside a major channel of the river in Rotterdam, crossing it daily, swimming and sailing in its tributaries. In The Rhine, he sets out by bicycle from the Netherlands where it enters the North Sea, following it through Germany, France and Liechtenstein, to its source in the icy Alps. He explores the impact that the Rhine has had on European culture and history and finds out how influences have flowed along and across the river, shaping the people who live alongside it. Blending travelogue and offbeat history, The Rhine tells the fascinating story of how a great river helped shape a continent.

*A Scotsman Travel Book of the Year* Why the Dutch Are Different is the internationally best-selling portrait of a fascinating people and the country that was the setting for Tulip Fever. Stranded at Schiphol airport, Ben Coates called up a friendly Dutch girl he'd met some months earlier. He stayed for dinner. Actually, he stayed for good. In the first audiobook to consider the hidden heart and history of the Netherlands from a modern perspective, the author explores the length and breadth of his adopted homeland and discovers why one of the world's smallest countries is also so significant and so fascinating. It is a self-made country, the Dutch national character shaped by the ongoing battle to keep the water out from the love of dairy and beer to the attitude to nature and the famous tolerance. Ben Coates investigates what makes the Dutch the Dutch, why the Netherlands is much more than Holland and why the colour orange is so important. Along the way, he reveals why they are the world's tallest people and have the best carnival outside Brazil. He learns why Amsterdam's brothels are going out of business, who really killed Anne Frank and how the Dutch manage to be richer than almost everyone else despite working far less. He also discovers a country which is changing fast, with the Dutch now questioning many of the liberal policies which made their nation famous. A personal portrait of a fascinating people, a sideways history and an entertaining travelogue, Why the Dutch Are Different is the story of an Englishman who went Dutch. And loved it.
