Welcome back to Life's a Wreck (it's been a minute). I've been working on this podcast for the past five months and finally get to share it with all of you. It's been an experimental podcast for me as I look forward to what the future may hold for Life's a Wreck and let me promise you it has been a ton of fun piecing together. The entirety of this episode is inspired by the future. The future of me, of this pod and of the mental health care system in Canada. I was inspired to create this episode while listening to an episode of Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History. The episode was on experiments and specifically what magical experiments experts in various fields would do to vastly advance their understanding of their work. I wondered "huh what would this look like for mental health" and the concept for this pod and its new sound was born. In this episode, you'll hear from:The Scientific Director of the Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics (CAMH) Dr. Sean Hill, Canada's first EVER Federal Minister of Mental Health and Addiction The Honourable Dr. Carolyn Bennett, and the Executive Director of the Canadian Mental Health Association's Nova Scotia chapter Karn Nichols. Prominent voices in the mental health space, all coming together to discuss what the future of mental health looks like in Canada. Kick back and relax for a much-anticipated episode of Life's a Wreck.Special thanks to:Willem Paynter (Bass) - @willempaynter IGGabe Mink (Guitar) - @gabeminkfurcoat IGMartin Davidson (Sax)Maya StakaCredits for additional Music:Bobby Shew Quintet, The Loop Jazz Club, Jul 16, 2017 Bobby Shew – trumpet Eric Marienthal – saxophone Matt Harris – piano Tomáš Uhlík – double bass Dennis Mackrel – drums
Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw conducted by Dennis Mackrel with special guest José James. It features the music of Billie Holliday and original compositions by José James. Merry Christmas, Team UNPLUGGED.
“Ride the storm, baby…” As soon as I decided to do this project and begin by featuring bassists, I knew I'd want to reune with Bill Moring, who I was super-fortunate to have in my former band, the East Down Septet. As we caught up, it was striking (and humbling) to hear how he started his career playing with the best of the big band drummers, from Indianapolis legend John Von Ohlen, to Mel Lewis, to Dennis Mackrel (during Bill's stint with the Count Basie Orchestra). It was during those formative years that Bill discusses how he acquired his warm, fat sound that has made him busy ever since, in all circles of jazz. After we listen to and discuss the incredible duets (which Bill turning into funny, poignant mini-compositions), we turn to his role as a teacher, his take on the next generation, and his super-positive outlook. Medicine for the soul.

We, the management of WAGRadio, have always asked one thing of DJZigZag - work with your heart. Work with your heart, over your brain. "Don't overthink things", we constantly remind our cardinal host and producer. It's with that credo in mind that we present the first of possibly two, 2018 Groovin' Blue Christmas shows. To the keenest observers amongst you, this Groovin' Blue may seem similar to the end-of-season holiday show from last year. It is the same program. We implored the Zigmeister to repeat last year's show - with a modicum of change - acknowledging it, in our opinion, as the pinacle of soulful, artistic Christmas New World African Music programming. It represents our musical heart at this time of the year. Luckily, that's how its original presenter / producers - DJZigZag and Sunny 'Sweet Daddy Fonk' Wong - feel about it too. As in years past, we offer you, the prepared listener, the seasonal music we love - without a host. DJZigZag and Sweet Daddy Fonk will be taking a much-needed break and listening to the harmonies along with you. We also dedicate the program, as we do every year, to those who find themselves confined, detained, under lock and key. You are in our thoughts. We hope the harmonious sounds that so move us - will bring you comfort and joy at this time of the year. WAGRadio Management GROOVIN' BLUE XMAS 2018 SHOW #1 1. Today’s podcast features an interview with Todd Coolman, who has just released his latest album Collectibles. Todd is actually playing a CD release event tonight at Smoke Jazz Club in New York City to celebrate the release of the album, which also features Bill Cunliffe on piano and Dennis Mackrel on drums. This is the second time Todd has appeared on the podcast—you can hear his interview with Win Hinkle in our archives. Todd and I cover all sorts of interesting topics in this interview, including his experiences moving from a full-time faculty position down to part-time and the opportunities that opens up for him. We talk about his classical foundation on the bass and dig into classical and jazz crossover and how lessons learned in one genre are valuable in the other. We also talk about skills the modern music student needs to be successful and what colleges can do to help facilitate this, and we get into details about recording this new album. If you enjoyed this episode, check out our interviews with Carlos Henriquez, Chuck Israels, Larry Gray, Ron Carter, Lynn Seaton, and Rufus Reid!
