Song: vocal improvisation Improvised by: David Ruffin and Patricia Norton Notes: It's a first for A Breath of Song! An episode of improvisation -- David Ruffin is our guest, talking about the multiple benefits of the practice of improvisation, his teachers, leading menfolk in song circles, the particular challenges of having a big, beautiful voice, how singing together might build soil in these times... and more! We hope you join us in exploring the voice, and that our questions raise questions for you, too... Songwriter Info: David is a performing artist, community song leader and teacher with a passion for authentic expression. He loves creating space for voices to emerge fully and freely. He calls Central Vermont home, where he's grateful to be able to share his holistic approach to voice in community through lessons, workshops, community singing and performance collaborations. David's work is inspired by a diverse background including studies with Roy Hart Center voice teachers, deep dives in vocal improvisation, explorations in Voice Movement Therapy and over 20 plus years of performing arts, teaching and counseling/ministry experience. David believes singing helps us remember who we really are, what we're here to voice and, how we're, thankfully, so very bound up together in this. Senate Bill 5 [SB5], The Wildlife Heritage Act recently passed the NM State Legislature and was signed into law. SB5 provides a wholistic approach to updating the systems in place for wildlife management in New Mexico. This bill was supported by one of the largest and most diverse conservation coalitions ever to be assembled in the state. Each organization who worked tirelessly to help this necessary bill become law approached the goal from a unique perspective. The values, priorities and mission statements represented by the more than twenty groups who formed this united team are often quite different. One core belief shared universally by the coalition is that future generations of New Mexicans deserve to enjoy robust wildlife populations in the fourth most biodiverse state in the Nation. United by this truth, conservation leaders across New Mexico agreed to push our differences aside and focus on this common goal. The result was success. Jesse Deubel joins Judy Calman of Audubon Southwest, Matthew Monjaras of Impact Outdoors and John Rutter of The New Mexico Houndsmen Association in this discussion about the monumental improvements provided through SB5. While each of these organizations were motivated by different reasons, all supported SB5 and all were instrumental in the bill's success. In his book, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," author Stephen Covey writes "Seek first to understand, then to be understood." By heeding that advice, a large conglomeration of interest groups in New Mexico has effectively transformed the future of wildlife management in the Land of Enchantment. This is a win for all people and a win for all wildlife. Enjoy the listen! For more info: NMWF Website

Composer Margaret Wegener (1920 – 2020) led an extraordinary life both in the UK where she was born, and here in New Zealand, where she settled in 2005. A considerable body of Margaret's original compositions have been published, drawing praise from composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, Herbert Howells, and John Rutter. Auckland Libraries is privileged to hold the collection of her musical life's work and pays tribute to this remarkable woman by showcasing some of her most beautifully crafted instrumental and vocal works. Some of the Auckland Philharmonia's Aspiring Musicians, a pianist from the Haydn Staples Auckland Philharmonia Piano Scholarship and other local musicians, come together in this performance to bring Margaret's music to life — a treasure to be discovered, heard and cherished.

In this final edition, we're talking to two of the Britain's most passionate advocates for singing in a choir. Ben England and Mark Strachan collaborated during the pandemic on the Self-Isolation Choir when thousands joined online from round the world to sing. Both were awarded British Empire Medals as a result. Today they tell us about Choir of the Earth, which grew out of the Self-Isolation Choir, and all the Christmas festive singing you can join in with. Looking ahead to next year, we hear about the 24-hour Handel's Messiah in St. George's Hanover Square and the 24-hour Mozart's Requiem at St. Gabriel's Church in Pimlico. Anyone is welcome to drop in and sing for a small fee to raise money to help rebuild St. George's crumbling portico and for the Pimlico Music Foundation which encourages children from all backgrounds to sing. Mark and Ben have gathered a raft of exceptional musicians and conductors, including John Rutter and Laurence Cummings, to join them on these two marathon events. We also hear about Game Choir, set up my Mark to encourage gamers to sing and we're treated to a snippet of Game Choir singing ‘Sweden' from Minecraft, arranged by St. George's brilliant organist Richard Gowers. This will raise money for Specialeffect to help people with physical disabilities continue to play video games. Don't fail to tune into this fascinating discussion about the cultural significance of gaming and the glories and benefits of singing and what Mark and Ben have planned to delight us all this Christmas.
John Rutter is one of the world's leading choral music composers and he's known particularly for his carols. He was a very special guest on our seasonal season finale on Christmas music. Here's his full interview with David Hill. He lifts the lid on where carols come from, why the Nine Lessons and Carols from King's College, Cambridge has become such a festive tradition and the unexpected inspiration for one of his best-known pieces,The Shepherd's Pipe Carol.Get a playlist of The Bach Choir's favourite Christmas carols and receive monthly, behind-the-scenes updates on our activities by signing up to our monthly newsletter here - https://thebachchoir.org.uk/thanks-for-listening-to-change-your-tune-6See when John Rutter is next conducting his world-famous carols (and other compositions) live - https://johnrutter.com/events Change Your Tune is a Podcart production. Christmas is coming and, even if you haven't uttered a note all year, you might find yourself bursting into song. You probably know classics like O Come All Ye Faithful and Away in a Manger - but where do they come from and why do we sing them? David Hill investigates with the help of classically-trained-singer-turned-comedian Lloyd Griffith (who remembers the ‘Lord of the Flies' moments of his youth when it came to singing the main solo in the carol concert) and one of the world's most prolific Christmas carol composers, John Rutter. Carols mentioned in this festive special include: Away in a Manger; The Shepherd's Pipe Carol by John Rutter; Hark The Herald Angels Sing; O Come all Ye Faithful featuring the David Willcocks descant; Once in Royal David's City; Gaudete arranged by David Hill.Get a playlist of The Bach Choir's favourite Christmas carols and receive monthly, behind-the-scenes updates on our activities by signing up to our monthly newsletter here - https://thebachchoir.org.uk/thanks-for-listening-to-change-your-tune-6Get tickets to Lloyd Griffith's upcoming Baroque and Roll tour here - https://lloydgriffith.com/#live See when John Rutter is next conducting his world-famous carols (and other compositions) live - https://johnrutter.com/events Change Your Tune is a Podcart production. “The Wexford Carol” is heralded as Ireland's oldest recorded Christmas carol. It's been performed by world class cellist Yo-Yo Ma and American country music star Allison Krauss. Yet, the history of this carol is difficult to trace. We know that it was passed down in the oral tradition for hundreds of years. Some scholars claim it originated in the 16th century, while others believe it has even older roots in the 12th century. However, it was not until the 1920s that a certain music scholar and organist by the name of W.H. Grattan Flood plucked this jewel of a carol from the obscurities of history and preserved it for posterity. But where did Grattan Flood first hear this carol? And how did he manage to transform the song from folk legend to international sensation? Host Maggi Van Dorn travels to Enniscorthy, a small hillside town in County Wexford, Ireland, where Flood first put the carol to paper. She speaks with Flood's grand-daughter, Margaret Franklin, along with famed novelist and Enniscorthy native, Colm Tóibín. And Hark! welcomes back the illustrious liturgical music composer, Christopher Walker, to unwrap the beauty of “The Wexford Carol” and its likely roots. Hark! Season 3 debuts with a crowd favorite- “O Holy Night.” Born as a French poem in 1843, and set to music a few years later, this carol was banned for two decades from the Catholic Mass. It resurfaced in the hands of a Unitarian minister in the U.S. and became an anthem for abolitionists before the Civil War. It is also the song that you, our listeners, have overwhelmingly asked us to feature on Hark! Conductor Colin Britt returns to the show to unwrap the soaring verses and repeating leaps and skips in the music. Daniel Williams, professor of American religion and politics and author of several books on related subjects, narrates how “O Holy Night” has helped to shape Christmas culture in 19th-century America. Finally, Greg Boyle, S.J. of Homeboy Industries, shares with host Maggi Van Dorn the profound meaning this beloved carol has for him. The episode features a brand new recording of “O Holy Night” performed by the renowned choir of King's College, Cambridge, under the direction of Daniel Hyde, and arranged by John Rutter, featuring the Britten Sinfonia. The story of Reginald Fessenden broadcasting “O Holy Night” was a theatrical production designed by our engineer, Jim Bilodeau. It incorporated a reenactment of the event available on Walts Welt Soundcloud channel. SynopsisOn today's date in 1958, just nine days after his death, a funeral service was held for the British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams at Westminster Abbey, where his ashes were laid to rest. Now, many famous people are buried at Westminster Abbey, but an actual funeral service there, especially for someone not of the royal family, is pretty rare. In fact, Vaughan Williams was the first commoner to be buried there for almost 300 years. The previous such event had been for the 17th English composer and sometime organist of the Abbey, Henry Purcell–whose grave, like Vaughan Williams, is in the Abbey's north choir aisle, should you wish to pay your respects.Vaughan Williams had left instructions for which music was to be played: his anthem O taste and see and also his setting of the hymn, All people that on earth do dwell, written for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, which had taken place at Westminster Abbey just five years earlier, in 1953.The service was broadcast live by the BBC, and the announcer noted that if all the submitted requests to attend had have been honored, the Abbey would have been filled twice over.Music Played in Today's ProgramRalph Vaughan Williams (1872 - 1958) "O Taste and See" and "All People that on Earth do Dwell" (arr. of "Old 100th") The Cambridge Singers; John Rutter, cond. Synopsis For many years now MidAmerica Productions has been organizing concerts in New York City and enlisting choral ensembles from the U.S. and abroad to come to the “big apple” to perform at prestigious Manhattan venues. On today's date in 1990, choirs from Arkansas, Connecticut, Minnesota, and Texas were on stage at Carnegie Hall for the world premiere of John Rutter's Magnificat, specially commissioned by MidAmerica, and with the British composer himself on hand to conduct. “The chorus numbered over 200 voices,” Rutter recalled, “every one of them happy and excited at the prospect of joining forces in the magnificent setting of Carnegie Hall... [so] I wanted to write something joyous because that would reflect the mood of the performers...” “The ‘Magnifcat',“ continues Rutter, “is known as the Canticle of the Blessed Virgin, and it is mainly in the sunny southern countries – Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico – that Mary is most celebrated... This led me to conceive the music as a bright, Latin- flavored fiesta.” Despite composing and conducting religious music, Rutter confessed during a 2003 interview that he was not particularly religious himself – just a composer deeply moved and inspired by the spirituality of sacred verses and prayers. Understand the composers narrative and your performance will come alive! In this podcast, Clare takes a look at the beautiful 'Sonate en Concert' by the prolific composer Jean-Michel Damase and two movements, the 'Rondeau' and the 'Aria' from the beautiful and haunting flute piece Suite Antique by John Rutter Of the ‘Sonate en Concert' Clare says "in my opinion, Damase doesn't get the credit amongst flute payers that he deserves!' Composed in 1979, 'Suite Antique' is a concertante work by John Rutter and is written for harpsichord, flute and string orchestra. Rutter composed the piece, in six movements, for a concert at which Bach's fifth Brandenburg concerto was to be performed, and so decided to write the piece for the same ensemble. In this podcast Clare looks at two movements in particular, the 'Rondeau' and the 'Aria' Please 'Rate - Like - Follow' Talking Flutes 'on whatever podcast provider you are listening on as it helps others to find us! The saga continues this week on my story. See what happens when you start a church in a strip mall. We meet some of the church members who would join us. I continue recalling the abuse behind the scenes, including the speculations behind our non-existent love life. There are many examples of financial abuse, emotional abuse, spiritual abuse, isolation, and unhealthy patterns of married sex. I end the episode with a Christmas song I recorded, Candlelight Carol. 31 October 2022 | Vigil of All Saints | Menlo Park, Calif. I may not have managed to get it up by 6:00, but I'm delighted to be back this week with a new episode of In Your Embrace podcast! This Hallow's Eve, we join the founders of the Dickens Chronological Reading Club to discuss Oliver Twist: how lost souls find a home, how hospitality can be a double-edged sword, and just why this novel is tremendously compelling and relevant for readers today. Plus, what is the dark night of the soul, and how can St. John call it “more lovely than the dawn”? Opening music: “Gaudeamus omnes,” composed by WIlliam Byrd, dir. Cameron Diaz had a lot going on. Her latest movie, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, was about to hit theaters. With the release just days away, a photographer named John Rutter reached out to her. John had photos of Cameron from about a decade earlier, when she was a 19-year-old model. He'd shot the photos for a racy S&M lingerie editorial. He told Cameron that people were offering him millions of dollars for them. Then he offered to sell them to her, for a discount. Then Brandi tells us about the murder of Leslie Vaughn. Leslie was a successful criminal defense attorney whose work sometimes put him in close contact with violent people. So when Leslie was shot in his home one evening, the list of potential suspects could have been long. But the behavior of Leslie's son, Brian Vaughn, made investigators think that perhaps the killer was right under their nose. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Photographer convicted of trying to blackmail Cameron Diaz,” by Michelle Caruso for the Seattle Times “Cameron Diaz photographer convicted for topless photo plot,” by Gil Kaufman for MTV.com “‘I'm proud of topless shots,'” by David Sanderson for the Evening Standard “Cameron Diaz photographer headed to jail,” by Todd Peterson for People.com “Actress takes the stand in trial of photographer,” by Cara Mia DiMassa for The Los Angeles Times “Man who blackmailed Cameron Diaz over topless photos faces jail,” by Catherine Elsworth for the Daily Telegraph “Photos develop into court case,” by Cara Mia DiMassa for The Los Angeles Times “Jail for Diaz dirt,” by David K. Synopsis On this day in 1900, the world first heard the Requiem of Gabriel Fauré in its full orchestral version at a concert at the Paris World Exhibition. Faure's Requiem ranks today among his best-known and best-loved compositions, and omits all reference to the terrors of the Last Judgment which appear in the traditional liturgical text, concentrating instead on comforting the bereaved. The Requiem was originally written for chorus and a more intimate chamber ensemble, and was occasioned by Fauré's sorrow at the death of his own father. The American composer Christopher Rouse has written a number of works dealing with the passing of friends and colleagues – works half-seriously, half-jokingly referred to as Rouse's “Death Cycle.” Rouse's Pulitzer Prize-winning Trombone Concerto from 1991 is dedicated to the memory of Leonard Bernstein; his Symphony No. 2, from 1994, contains a tribute to the young composer Stephen Albert, who died in a car crash; and a section of his Flute Concerto from 1993 reflects the composer's shock upon reading an account of the senseless tragedy of a two-year-old child, abducted from an English shopping mall and killed by two ten-year-olds. Los Angeles Times critic Mark Swed has noted that much of Rouse's work is “music of leave-taking… but it is also a music of catharsis, survival and a celebration of being alive.” Music Played in Today's Program Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) – Requiem (The Cambridge Singers; John Rutter, cond.) Collegium 101 Christopher Rouse (b. 1949) – Symphony No. 2 and Flute Concerto (Carol Wincenc, flute; Houston Symphony; Christoph Eschenbach, cond.) Telarc 80452
