It's April 2025 ... and that means it's national Jazz Appreciation Month here in the U.S.! Join host CH as she shares her own journey to not only coming to love the genre - particularly the classics and standards of the 1930s and 40s - but also how it has shaped her sense of musicianship when she resumed playing drums after a 10 year hiatus. She reflects on how the sounds of jazz surrounded her at a young age (even if she wasn't suuuuper interested at the time), and how her original love of playing pop/rock music evolved as her own musical leanings changed over time. She also reminds us of the importance of embracing music - no matter the genre - at any stage of life for the personal enrichment and inspiration it brings to us all. Show Notes Jazz Appreciation Month (known as "JAM") runs from April 1 - April 30 in the U.S. It culminates with the international celebration of International Day of Jazz on April 30th. For those looking for more information and events that are scheduled for 2025, head over to the National Museum of American History, which founded JAM in 2001 (and of which is where CH pulled the quote that ended our episode). Additionally, CH highly recommends the Ken Burns PBS documentary film, "Jazz", for those looking for a comprehensive examination and tribute to jazz from its earliest origins up to present day. Some of the artists CH mentioned that played in her grandparent's house as she was growing up: Duke Ellington; Billie Holliday; Ella Fitzgerald; Glenn Miller; Benny Goodman; Frank Sinatra; Dean Martin; Nat King Cole. Additionally, her step-father was a fan of Brazilian jazz. The Los Angeles radio station CH also grew up listening to was 94.7 The Wave (now known as The Soul of Southern California).
Madeleine Peyroux started her career busking on the streets of Paris and earned comparisons to such heroes as Billie Holliday and Bessie Smith as she broke through with the 2004 album Careless Love. Twenty years later, she is soon to release her ninth studio album, Let's Walk, for which she, for the first time, co-wrote all of the songs. In this no-holding-back conversation, she reflects on her beginnings (the 1939 movie musical Gulliver's Travels plays a role), her creative growth and her struggles to process the current state of our world artistically and otherwise. How does she feel about the only job she's ever had? Is she cool with turning 50 this month? How does she co-write? Does she feel compelled to communicate empathy now? Is she part of the problem or solution?
We look at songs from a few of the major protest movements in our lifetime – racism, Vietnam, Ireland, Margaret Thatcher! From Woody Guthrie, through Springsteen and Dylan, to racism and Vietnam and the UK's Margaret Thatcher, to present-day Australia, we look at some of the great protest songs. Some of the stories behind those songs will take your breath away. Our “Album You Must Hear before You Die” this time is Talking Heads' awesome “Remain in Light” from 1980. This album has been hailed as Talking Heads' greatest statement, the last and most accomplished of the trio of albums they recorded with Brian Eno (another of our idols). Seemingly timed to coincide with our review, the live movie “Stop Making Sense” has been completely restored and is in 4K on the big screen - 40 years on! We also talk about how Ed Kuepper achieves such a big sound in concert using a special edition Fender Stratocaster. There's sure to be stuff you didn't know here! In 1988, U2 seemed to believe their roots lay with the Beatles, Hendrix, Billie Holliday and Bo Diddley. The album – and film – Rattle and Hum saw them referencing the above, as well as recording with Dylan, then BB King, at Sun Studio in Memphis. But where were their actual influences in this telling of the tale? The Rottens and Viciouses? The Curtises and Hooks? The Strummerses? Authentic cowboys, well sort of, start us off. Mac McClintock left home to join the circus. Between that, and becoming a singer, actor, composer and poet, he did a whole stream of incredible jobs. Railroading in Africa, Mule train in Philipines and news gatherer in China. He was a devoted union man and wrote Hallelujah I'm a bum and Big rock candy mountain. Here he gives us The old Chisholm trail. Jules Allen sings Zebra dun. He probably was a real life cowboy at one time, driving cattle from the Mexican border to Montana. The Cartwright Brothers sing Texas Ranger. The tune and sentiment are familar. It's yet another version of The unfortunate Rake. Into Western Swing. The right key but the wrong keyhole- Cliff Bruner Texas Wanderers, I can't dance(I've got ants in my pants)- Rob Newman and his boys, Wonder Stomp- Texas Wanderers and Devil with the devil- Rob Newman and his boys. Bob Wills with Bob Wills boogie from 1946. Very rock and roll in my opinion. Jazz on 78rpm break with Teddy Wilson and his Orchestra. I cried for you- vocals by Billie Holiday and, a new favourite of mine, Blues in G sharp minor. Composed by Wilson. He was rated as the best swing pianist of his time. Back to Western Swing and Milton Brown and his Brownies. St Louis Blues. Great, trippy version, with a real tempo shift toward the end. In El Rancho Grande- Milton and Durwood singing in Spanish. From 1937, a year after Milton's death, Durwood sings If you can't get five get two. We finish with the wonderfully upbeat tune from Virginian fiddler John Ashby- The 8th of January.

In this episode of Critical Reads, we will be discussing The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James H. Cone. Here's a brief summary of the book courtesy of the author/publisher: "The cross and the lynching tree are the two most emotionally charged symbols in the history of the African American community. In this powerful new work, theologian James H. Cone explores these symbols and their interconnection in the history and souls of black folk. Both the cross and the lynching tree represent the worst in human beings and at the same time a thirst for life that refuses to let the worst determine our final meaning. While the lynching tree symbolized white power and black death, the cross symbolizes divine power and black life God overcoming the power of sin and death. For African Americans, the image of Jesus, hung on a tree to die, powerfully grounded their faith that God was with them, even in the suffering of the lynching era. In a work that spans social history, theology, and cultural studies, Cone explores the message of the spirituals and the power of the blues; the passion and of Emmet Till and the engaged vision of Martin Luther King, Jr.; he invokes the spirits of Billie Holliday and Langston Hughes, Fannie Lou Hamer and Ida B. Well, and the witness of black artists, writers, preachers, and fighters for justice. And he remembers the victims, especially the 5,000 who perished during the lynching period. Through their witness, he contemplates the greatest challenge of any Christian theology to explain how life can be made meaningful in the face of death and injustice." Amy Winehouse was a legend; so young when she started she rose to a level of fame that most people only dream of - except for one thing - Amy never wanted to be as famous as she had became - to quote Tony Bennett she was the definition of a "true jazz star" and jazz stars are infamous for NOT wanting a 1000 people in their face - Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, or Bennett himself, just to name a few - these were quiet, beautiful people who just wanted to share their voice with the world and yet sometimes fame brought to them excesses unwanted - Billie it was heroin, Bennett for a long while it was cocaine, and then there is Amy, whose affinity for purging what she'd eaten "bulimia" and then the excesses of drugs and alcohol were powder kegs for dangerous mixes.A little of her life mixed in with a small study of her death - her is AMY - as beautiful as she were.

On this week's For Your Consideration, Collider's awards experts Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff and Jeff Sneider recap this year's SAG Award winners and discuss whether or not they'll influence the Oscar race. The big surprise over the weekend was Viola Davis' SAG win for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, as many experts had pegged the race between Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) and two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand (Nomadland). Recent Golden Globe winner Andra Day (The United States Vs. Billie Holliday) was not nominated for a SAG Award this year, which may have paved the way for Davis' upset victory. The FYC hosts agree that Chadwick Boseman's posthumous SAG win cements him as the frontrunner for Best Actor at the Oscars, where the runner-ups will continue to be Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) and Anthony Hopkins (The Father). Meanwhile, Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) remains the frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor following a successful hosting stint on Saturday Night Live. Finally, Minari star Yuh-jung Youn triumphed at the SAG Awards, beating out buzzy newcomer Maria Bakalova, who had been tipped to win via a "leak" that proved incorrect in that category. Jeff has long pegged the veteran performer as the likely winner for Best Supporting Actress, though Olivia Colman is a past Oscar winner who could always surprise for her turn in The Father. How does the 'singer's singer' approach a cover of Bob Dylan or Billie Holiday? "They're just songs, now" she says. And we hear why melody and comedy are central to rapper Briggs' projects.
There are times when I like to take the Take 5 on the road; heading to places where creative people gather, and the conversations around art and music are part and parcel of daily life. Dark Mofo in Hobart is one of those places. A festival set in the middle of winter, in the southernmost city in Australia. When the wind blows, it's coming from Antarctica. The streets light up with red crosses each night to signal some sort of curiosity you should explore within, there are open fires and pagan feasts, and there is music; curated in such a beautiful way it feels like a movement, like a moment. This is the place I met Kelsey Lu. Lu grew up in North Carolina, and was raised as a Jehovah's Witness. Early on, she found the cello, and connected deeply with the strings. She followed her heart, left home, and broke bonds with her family as she headed to New York City to follow her musical dreams. Through her 20's Kelsey Lu found her voice, she collaborated with Solange, and Sampha, she experienced heartache and pain, and she headed west to heal, and begin again. Across five beautiful choices, Lu shared her songs of hope. All women, all powerful, and all tied to the human and artist she has become. Settle in for a beautiful conversation, with Kelsey Lu.
