In November 1987, Jamaican sprinter Derice Bannock trains to qualify for the 100 metre in the 1988 Summer Olympics. He fails to qualify when fellow runner Junior Bevil accidentally stumbles, not only falling over himself, but knocking down Derice, and another competitor named Yul Brenner.Derice petitions for a re-heat, but committee leader Barrington Coolidge, though he pities Derice, refuses. He invites Derice to try again in four years' time, or to try out for one of the only two other sports Jamaica competes in; boxing and cycling. Derice spots a photograph in Coolidge's office, featuring his late father Ben, standing next to a fellow Olympic gold medal winner. Coolidge identifies the man as disgraced American bobsled medallist Irving Blitzer, who was disqualified for cheating in the 1972 Winter Olympics, and now works as a bookie, fortunately not far from where Derice lives. Derice realizes he could participate in the 1988 Winter Olympics by forming a bobsled team, recruiting his friend Sanka Coffie, a pushcart derby champion.Derice and Sanka track down Blitzer, who at first refuses to help Derice, until learning he is Ben Bannock's son. He reluctantly agrees to coach the team. A recruitment drive fails miserably. Blitzer shows a film about bobsledding on a slide projector, but is heckled, and when the lights come on, only Derice and Sanker are still present. Fortunately, Junior Bevil and Yul Brenner arrive late to the meeting, making the required four-man team. Junior, like Derice, can't wait another four years to enter the Olympics, and Yul Brenner just wants to get off the island. The team train with Blitzer, though Coolidge refuses to fund the $20,000 needed to participate in the Olympics, believing the team's inexperience will bring shame to Jamaica. Derice's attempts to find another sponsor fail miserably. The team are forced to find other ways to earn the money- Sanker tries his hand at busking, with no success. Yul Brenner holds arm-wrestling contests, and Derice even sets up a kissing booth- these ventures meet with moderate success, but they still haven't anywhere near enough money. In the end, Junior sells his car to finance the trip.In Calgary, Blitzer registers the team, receiving an old bobsled from his former teammate Roger. The Jamaicans struggle to drive the bobsled and adapt to the cold, though exercise and hard work eventually pays off. Derice begins to copy the techniques of the very efficient East German team. The East German team, and their captain, Josef Groole- the current bobsled world record holder- constantly heckle the team during try-outs. Eventually, all the members of the team except Derice get into a bar fight with the East Germans. Derice reprimands them severely. After weeks of training, the team successfully qualifies for the finals, only to be disqualified by the Olympic committee, but this is only where their story begins...::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::;Our DM is Dalton RiddleOur Players are Andrew Gehrlein, Michael Adair & Alissa AdairEditing by Alissa, Michael, and AndrewTheme song (both old and new!!) by Dustin Hook (so talented)Please check out our Instagram, Twitter and Tiktok @dungeonradiohour to keep up with the latest DRH news! bye for now~

To compete in the Olympics, Derice and his best friend, Sanka, a champion push cart racer, seek out Irv Blitzer, an old friend of Derice's father Ben who tried to recruit sprinters to the bobsled team years ago. Irving is an American bobsled two time Gold Medalist at the 1968 Winter Olympics who finished first in two events again during the 1972 Winter Olympics but was disqualified from the latter for cheating and retired in disgrace to Jamaica, where he leads an impoverished life as a bookie. Derice's persistence eventually convinces Irving to be their coach and return to the life he left behind. They eventually recruit Junior and Yul, though Yul is still upset over Junior's mistake at the Olympic Trial. The rest is, literally, history.Trivia - Contrary to the story in movie, the Jamaican team was met with open arms by the international Bobsledding teams. One of the other teams even went so far as to lend the Jamaican team a back-up sled so they could qualify. The Jamaican bobsledder characters in the movie were all fictional characterizations and were not based on their real life counterparts. John Candy's Irving "Irv" Blitzer coach character is also fictional.Final John Candy starring film to be released before he died of a heart attack five months later. The original cast who was envisaged by Disney for the film was Denzel Washington as Derice, Eddie Murphy as Sanka, Wesley Snipes as Yul, Marlon Wayans as Junior and John Candy as Irving Blitzer. Finally, only Candy played in this film. The crash scene at the end of the movie, except for the close-up shots, was the real footage of the actual Jamaican bobsled team crash taken from the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.Contrary to the movie, the infamous crash wasn't due to a mechanical error, but more or less losing control of the sled at such a high speed.Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner” Due to Covid-19 the Disney has postponed the release of the following movies: Mulan, Black Widow, New Mutants, Antlers, Personal History of David Copperfield, Woman in the Window, Production has been halted on the following: Live Action Little Mermaid, Shang - Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings, Home Alone remake, Avatar sequel, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, WandaVision.Disney is shockingly closed still. Get on up!  It's Bobsled time!  That's right, darlings.  This week we took a poll to see which cold weather movie was your fave and by a landslide, you guys chose Disney's 1993 hit Cool Runnings!  Loosely (and we mean VERY loosely) based on the true story of the first Jamaican Olympic bobsled team!  Derice Bannock (played by the solo monikered Leon) dreams of competing for Olympic gold on the Jamaican track team, just like his father.  But when he is accidentally tripped by a fellow runner during the qualifying race, his dreams seem to be dashed forever.  Until he realizes that he can still compete in the winter Olympics...if he assembles the first ever Jamaican bobsled team!  Aided by his pushcart derby champ friend, Sanka Coffie (played by Doug E. Doug, remember him?), they recruit former bobsledding gold medalist, Irving Blitzer (played by John Candy) as their coach.  They add the runner that tripped Derice to the team as well as the OTHER runner that that dude also tripped (man, that was one serious fall) and they are off to the races, so to speak.  Now, our hosts have watched this movie in the past few years, so SPOILER ALERT, they already know how great it is.  But do YOU?  Join us and find out!  And don't forget to RATE, REVIEW & SUBSCRIBE!

Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up... it's podcast time! This week the HDYR gang is separating fact from fiction with their look back at Disney's kinda/sorta/not really "true story" of the first Jamaican bobsled team. Once you get past the fact that 95% of this was made up, however, there's still plenty to love about this movie. Topics include: the shift from straightforward sports drama to broad comedy, why the real story of this team doesn't make for a particularly compelling film, our pitch for a revised version of this sport, whether or not Derice is an effective protagonist, a shocking fact about one of the writers that might explain a few or our issues with the script, and much much more! iTunes / Stitcher / RSS / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram About The Show

Geovanni Derice, motivational speaker stops by PhatMan Radio to help you get motivated for 2014. Growing up as an Haitian American, in his younger years he dealt with having an accent that made him stand out from his peers. It was on one fall day while in the 3rd grade that Geo was made fun of for not sounding like everyone else. Although he realized he was different, he was always brought up to be apart from the expectations of everyone else. It’s this unique upbringing that helped him excel in school, embrace his uniqueness and eventually becoming the 8th grade student body president at his school. Sounds like a perfect story, until he entered high school where once again the pressure to be liked rose. Peer pressure in high school is a tough thing for any kid, and Geo was no different. With his attempts to fit in working against him, he grew depressed and even battled with a suicidal moment at the age of 15. By the grace of God he realized that his path was to take the road less traveled, and because he did things differently, he experienced things that his peers never did. Fast forward to today, he’s embraced the stage speaking to young people about the value of finding your own path. His teachings on how greatness is fitting out from the crowd, not in the crowd has helped many young teens accept who they are, and not live an ordinary life, but one that’s extraordinary.
