Ciara shares her experience of an ectopic pregnancy and the profound impact her loss had on her body, her mental health, and her sense of self. We explore her IVF journey, the hope, heartbreak, and resilience required to keep going when the path to becoming a mother is anything but straightforward. We discuss perinatal mental health and Ciara's experience of postnatal depression, unpacking how it showed up for her, what helped, and what she wishes more people understood about the postpartum period. Ciara offers insight into the experience of black mothers within the maternity healthcare system, and explains its far-reaching impact on the maternal mortality rate in the US.Texts mentioned in this episodeBooks:'The Nurture Revolution: Grow Your Baby's Brain and Transform Their Mental Health through the Art of Nurtured Parenting' by Greer KirshenbaumInstagram:@herblackwellness@antiracistnursecollective@thesleepdoctor@bundlebirthnurses

In today's episode I'm chatting to Maria about her two pregnancies. Her first was very sadly an ectopic pregnancy and she shares her journey of expectant management, which left her feeling very lonely and anxious. When she conceived again and got through the first trimester, Maria loved her second pregnancy. She planned to birth her baby at home but ended up accepting an induction at 42+2. She talks about her experience of a 3rd degree tear, the amazing postnatal care she received and how healing her birth felt following her loss. I'm so grateful to Maria for sharing so honestly about her ectopic pregnancy and just want to flag to you listening that thats what we speak about for the first few minutes of our conversation in case you'd prefer to save this episode for another day. Hello and welcome to this week's episode of The Fertility Podcast. I'm Natalie, and this is a slightly different one. Please note the trigger warning on this episode. As it is Baby Loss Awareness Week, I want to hold space for anyone who has experienced loss, is grieving, or is navigating uncertainty in their fertility journey. In this episode, I'm resharing a previous conversation hosted by Kate Davis, my former co-host and an independent fertility nurse. Kate spoke with Jade, who bravely shared her story of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy. This episode comes with a trigger warning as it discusses pregnancy loss in detail. If this is not the right time for you to listen, please take care of yourself and maybe explore other episodes from our ten-year archive. Before we return to Jade's episode, I want to briefly share something personal.Last week, my family and I were caught up in the terrorist attack in Manchester during Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar. We were at our synagogue when the lockdown happened. My husband, who volunteers for our community's security, was outside in a stab-proof vest, which is a sad reality for British Jews. We spent the day on edge, and in the days since, it has taken a toll emotionally. I want to thank those who reached out with kindness and acknowledgement. If you have Jewish friends or colleagues, please take a moment to check in. A small gesture goes a long way. Now, back to this important episode.About this episodeIn this powerful re-shared conversation, Kate speaks with Jade, who opens up about her journey through multiple pregnancy losses, including two ectopic pregnancies. Jade shares her experience navigating diagnosis, advocating for her own care, and the emotional and physical recovery process. She also reflects on the fear of trying again and the trauma of nearly losing her life. What we talk aboutJade's multiple pregnancy losses including miscarriage and two ectopic pregnanciesHow she knew something was wrong even when the symptoms didn't match textbook examplesHer experience with methotrexate treatment and emergency surgery after ruptureThe importance of advocating for yourself when seeking medical helpEmotional trauma and grief following pregnancy lossThe mixed feelings around tube-saving surgery and IVF as a future pathCommon myths about ectopic pregnancy and how symptoms can differHow hospital staff and personal support helped her through itThe role of the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust and the support she receivedJade's message to other people navigating early pregnancy and lossLet's keep the conversation goingFollow me on Instagram: @fertilitypoddyExplore the work and support groups from Fertility Action: fertilityaction.orgLearn more about ectopic pregnancy: Ectopic Pregnancy TrustRead about the Baby Loss Certificate scheme: www.gov.uk/request-baby-loss-certificateSupport for Baby Loss Awareness WeekIf you or someone you know needs support, here are some brilliant charities offering resources, counselling, and community:Petals – The Baby Loss Counselling CharityTommy'sThe...
In this deeply moving episode of What I Wish I Knew After Pregnancy Loss, host Sharna Southan speaks with Bina Jesani, a pregnancy and baby loss grief coach from the UK. Bina shares her 23-year journey navigating multiple losses—an ectopic pregnancy, the neonatal death of her son Krishan, and an early miscarriage—and how these experiences shaped her calling to support other bereaved parents. In this episode, you'll hear: Bina's story of her ectopic pregnancy at 5 weeks and the emotional aftermath of minimal support Her 4-year fertility journey and the eventual birth of her daughter The heartbreaking loss of her son Krishan, who passed away just two days after birth The pivotal moment in the hospital when well-meaning advice affected how she honored her grief Why the ectopic pregnancy recovery was more difficult than her neonatal loss (and what made the difference) The hierarchy of grief—and why all pregnancy loss deserves validation, regardless of gestation How Bina supports both individuals and couples through one-on-one and couples coaching The importance of fathers having their own safe space to process grief Why saying your baby's name out loud brings healing Tools and approaches for navigating anniversaries and trigger dates The healing power of hearing your story through others' eyes Key Takeaways: Do what feels right for YOU in your grief—don't let others dictate how you should honor your baby There is no hierarchy in pregnancy loss; your grief is valid at any stage Couples grieve differently and need both individual and shared support Bereavement support shouldn't be limited to October—bereaved parents need support year-round Speaking your baby's name and sharing their story is a powerful act of healing Connect with Bina: Instagram: @bina.jesani Website: binajesani.com (featuring healing blogs about her journey) This episode is part of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, honouring all babies gone too soon. Intro: Hello, and welcome to episode 178 of the Childless Not by Choice Podcast. My name is Civilla Morgan. My mission is to recognize and speak to childless women and men worldwide, reminding us that we can live joyful, relevant, and fulfilled lives. And whether you have children or not, thank you for tuning in! What is today's show about? Ectopic Pregnancies I have not forgotten that this podcast is about childlessness. Indeed, being childless not by choice. And we all know there are many reasons for childlessness, including medical issues such as endometriosis, fibroids, adenomyosis, miscarriage, PCOS, and so many other physical and physiological issues. Trauma, both physical and emotional, can be a cause. Being born without a uterus, which I have discussed on this podcast before. I will put a link to that interview in the show notes for this episode. And then just the unknown, also known as idiopathic infertility. I want to talk about ectopic pregnancy because I have never discussed it. But let's step back a little. Let's talk about the uterus. And I realize I am speaking to the choir here. I think most of you know what a uterus is and what it does. So let me say this in one or two sentences: The uterus is where a baby grows once the sperm fertilizes the egg. So if the egg, sperm, and fertilization end up anywhere outside of the uterus, the pregnancy will not thrive. In fact, the pregnancy will not go to term. And most times that ending up outside the uterus means the components I just mentioned: the sperm and egg, end up in the fallopian tubes. It's like driving down a highway, the fallopian tubes. You are supposed to end up at a destination, the uterus, but you get stuck on the highway instead. And sometimes getting stuck on the highway can cause irreparable damage. Meaning the possibility of no future natural pregnancies. Although we have two fallopian tubes, so if one is affected by an ectopic pregnancy, if the other one is healthy, a viable pregnancy is possible. The risk of an ectopic pregnancy is 1-2%. It sounds like a small percentage, but a percentage is a percentage, isn't it? It's small until it happens to you. And human physiology is not something that can be contested. In other words, there is no way to have a baby successfully grow outside of the womb, the uterus. And again, I know I don't need to say this, but I am not referring to other types of creating pregnancy, like the gift of a successful IVF. I am talking about how a pregnancy starts biologically, and the only way it can continue. So, ectopic pregnancies. ‘An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, typically in the fallopian tube.'--AI. Ectopic pregnancies are often caused by damaged fallopian tubes, which prevent a fertilized egg from reaching the uterus, leading it to implant and grow elsewhere. Risk factors for tubal damage and subsequent ectopic pregnancies include pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis, Previous abdominal pelvic surgery Smoking. Other risk factors include conception while using an intrauterine device (IUD) After a tubal ligation (sterilization), Ongoing fertility treatments. Age: Being older than age 35 can also be a risk factor. I want to stop here and note that an ectopic pregnancy can be very dangerous. It is suggested that if you believe or have been diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy, you should see your physician immediately. Symptoms: Vaginal bleeding or spotting Abdominal pain, often one-sided Shoulder pain Nausea and vomiting Dizziness or fainting Now, the good news in all of this is that the chances of a successful pregnancy after an ectopic pregnancy are good, ranging from 65 to 85%, especially as time goes on. Meaning if you get pregnant again in 18 months, a successful pregnancy is 65% likely. In two years, it is 85% likely. I will say again, if we have arrived at the fact that we will not be having children. Maybe we have already had the hysterectomy. Maybe we have stopped IVF. We have just come to terms and decided to move on with our lives as childless not by choice people. That's what this podcast was created to address. But I also believe it is important to know more than our own journey. And that if we ever want to discuss more than our own journey, we are in the know. We can intelligently discuss as much or as little as we would like. Knowledge allows us to have the ball in our court. Maybe you have a family member or friend who is or has suffered from an ectopic pregnancy. Maybe you have, and then the pregnancy never happened for you. Either way, this is a slice of knowledge. And I hope it was helpful. As I close out this episode, I want to remind you that we are approaching our final episodes. It is a bittersweet feeling, as I have said before. But I know I am doing the right thing. I am feeling a shift and I need to go along with that shift. I will keep the Facebook group open, I will keep the website up and running. And in fact, I may now find time to refresh the website. www.childlessnotbychoice.net. Usually I go on hiatus for October and November. October is Pregnancy, Infant and Child Loss Awareness Month. All month long we will honor our babies gone to heaven far too soon. Have you heard of recurrent pregnancy loss? Recurrent Pregnancy Loss is defined by two or more failed pregnancies and is considered distinct from infertility. When the cause is unknown, each pregnancy loss merits careful review to determine whether specific evaluation may be appropriate, and after two or more losses, a thorough evaluation is warranted. Today's guest experienced 5 miscarriages after having her baby girl, one being an ectopic pregnancy where she lost her fallopian tube, and then was diagnosed with secondary infertility. Anesha Stanley's first pregnancy ended with a miscarriage in 2014. Three months later she found out she was pregnant with her rainbow baby girl, Sinai. She waited two years before trying to conceive again. In 2017 we began experiencing recurrent pregnancy losses. Miscarriage #2 on January 14, 2017. An ectopic pregnancy #3, November 1, 2017 was treated with methotrexate. Anesha went onto experience two more losses and was diagnosed with secondary infertility and tubal failure. In this episode, Anesha takes us back to what it was like experiencing the highs of finding out she was pregnant and the lows and pain of miscarriage. Send Victoria a text message! In today's episode, Rev. Christine Davies, a hospital chaplaincy leader, shares the path that led her into spiritual care and offers invaluable insights on navigating grief. A deep church involvement from childhood shaped her life path, a calling toward medicine influenced by her nurse mother, and personal health crises that highlighted the importance of compassionate bedside manners.Christine emphasizes chaplains' unique role in healthcare—focusing on emotional and spiritual support rather than just logistical aspects like social workers. These discussions are crucial for making advanced care plans that respect patients' wishes.Key takeaways from Christine's insights include:Personalized Spiritual Support:Individualized guidance is essential during times of grief.Chaplains fill critical gaps in patient care through collaboration with medical teams.Navigating Grief:Intrapsychic loss involves not only mourning what was lost but also shattered plans.Acknowledging each person's unique experience is vital for healing.End-of-Life Conversations:Open dialogue about death prepares families emotionally.Advanced care planning ensures patients' wishes are respected.Holistic Healing Practices:Integrative modalities like Reiki can complement traditional counseling to address energetic aspects of grief.Caregiver Self-Care:Setting boundaries and seeking personal wellness resources is crucial for caregivers' well-being.Advocacy for Holistic Healthcare:There's a need to integrate holistic practices within the healthcare system despite systemic challenges.Christine's work highlights how embracing emotional expression and physical activities can aid in grieving processes while advocating for more comprehensive patient-centered care approaches within healthcare settings. Her story inspires us to live meaningfully, engage openly in conversations about mortality, seek supportive communities during grief journeys, and advocate relentlessly for holistic patient care that honors every aspect of the human experience—emotional, spiritual, and physical.RESOURCES:SDI.orgDo Grief DifferentlyEnneagramReikiBiofield TuningBook, Support the showThis episode is sponsored by Do Grief Differently™️, my twelve-week, one-on-one, in-person/online program for grievers who have suffered any type of loss to feel better. In 2011, singer Nelly Joy told a doctor that she thought she had endometriosis, but the doctor just chuckled and said, "Most girls have painful periods," handed her birth control and Nelly went on her way. She spent years navigating kidney issues, anemia (blacking out), IBS, and constant throwing up from pain while being on the road doing an arena tour with Jason Aldean and Eric Church, opening sold out shows, being in and out of the ER not knowing what was wrong. When she and her husband started to try to have a baby, the road continued to be rough, including IVF and a devastating ectopic pregnancy. At this point in her journey, she's going the IUI route, channeling her pain and experiences through her beautiful music, including her new song, "Baby Showers." Her story is not over yet--stay tuned.
