Offering more indelible proof that a great song can enjoy many lives and enthrall multiple generations, Ellis Hall's timeless, haunting ballad “Some Days Were Meant for Rain” is now the second single from In the World, the debut album of WHAT!!!!, the legendary vocalist and multi-instrumentalist's duo with Grammy winning keyboardist George Whitty. The track follows fast on the heels of the release of the powerhouse, eclectic 10-track collection and the October 2024 drop of its lead single, “Die Living,” The first song recorded for the project, “Hug Me” is an expansive anthemic power ballad that pays tribute to the tenacity and resolve of the citizens of Ukraine in the face of Russia's invasion and the ongoing war. In addition to his years with the group Tower of Power, Hall – who has been sightless since age 18 - fronted the Ellis Hall Group in the 70s, has written over 4000 soul, gospel, blues and pop songs, performed with the likes of Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Herbie Hancock, George Benson and Maurice White and recorded with John Klemmer, George Duke and Kenny G, among countless others. He has also written and performed on many film soundtracks including The Lion King 2, Shrek 2, Invincible and Bruce Almighty. He also sang a Louis Armstrong tune in the Steven Spielberg film Catch Me If You Can. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)
Today on Too Opinionated we sit down with multi-Grammy winning keyboardist George Whitty to talk about his new musical endeavour WHAT!!!! In addition to playing live with the likes of The Brecker Brothers, Herbie Hancock, the late David Sanborn and Chaka Khan, as producer and session keyboardist, Whitty's credits include Santana's blockbuster Supernatural (with Dave Matthews), Celine Dion's Falling Into You and These Are Special Times, Hancock's The Imagine Project and hundreds of others. He has won four Grammys for his work on Chaka Khan's The Woman I Am, Randy Brecker's 34th and Lex, Michael Brecker's Tales From the Hudson and the Brecker Bros.' Out of the Loop. Amidst all the searing soul balladry, deep spirituality, insightful and impactful social consciousness and rousing funk on their infectious dual album In the World, legendary, world-wise cats George Whitty and Ellis Hall – collectively pooling their decades of musical passion as Whitty Hall Artistic Team, aka WHAT!!!! - infuse a beloved, inevitable R&B classic into the enticing mix. Driven by Hall's trademark rousing vocals, their fiery, tight groovin' and brass fired twist on Isaac Hayes' co-penned “I Thank You” takes the 1968 Sam & Dave classic to fresh, exciting heights. It's a way for the duo to express gratitude for their incredible individual careers and all the serendipitous events that led them to this epic moment. One of many potential hit singles and film licensing opportunities from the 10-track collection, “Die Living” is a simmering blues-soul anthem whose title came to Whitty out of the blue one day and led him to create a powerfully rhythmic gospel-influenced song with a bit of a raw front porch vibe. Hall's combination of vocals and organ drive the track, and he also adds various guitar tracks. In part inspired by a cool response Willie Nelson once gave a journalist who dared to ask if he would ever think of retiring, “Die Living” offers dynamic food for thought about wringing as much meaningful life experience we can during our time on this planet. WHAT!!!!'s new album In the World releases on February 14th, 2025. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

Why does death exist? Does getting older always mean getting wiser? Should we look to experience or youth for breakthroughs? In today's episode of the Reversing Climate Change podcast, Nori Cofounder Ross Kenyon is joined by Dr. Venki Ramakrishnan, a 2009 Nobel Laureate in chemistry and author of the new book, Why We Die: The New Science of Aging and the Quest for Immortality. Despite growing lifespans, it isn't clear that we have become less avaricious or kinder as a species, at least to the extent that may be desired. Would that change if we had radically longer lives? Is that even likely at this point? Venki challenges much of the discourse around anti-aging, immortality, trends made fun of in Silicon Valley like blood boys, consciousness uploads, and much else. And of course, they discuss if and how this will impact the world's attempts to grapple with climate change. As someone who truly embodies the SOFLETE slogan ‘Die Living’, George has never been one to back down from a challenge. So when a Recon’ Marine brother phoned George to invite him to compete in the Recon Challenge, as one of the first prior recon marine entrants, there was only going to be one answer. However, to make things even more interesting, there’s the small fact that the Challenge is only 5 weeks away! Listen along, as Matt tries to wrap his head around exactly how George plans to transform himself back into an operationally capable Recon Marine, hand tattoos and all...

We're proud to help pre-release "You", a track from Silence & Light's debut album. We can use this as text on the blog post as well. Formed in May of 2017 in New York City, Silence & Light draws from their musical pasts and their experiences as U.S. Special Operations veterans and set out to create music music that would raise awareness about the myriad issues facing veterans of the Global War on Terror and civil first responders, and to create a mechanism to support organizations that support those individuals in times of need. We are a modern hard rock band whose sole purpose is to inspire the people of the world who have endured the thrills of great success and high achievement and the lows of life's hardships and struggles to channel their energy into creating something positive and meaningful. In January 2019, Silence & Light recorded their debut EP at Stagg Street Studios in Van Nuys, California under the direction of Grammy Award-winning Producer, Josh Gudwin, and Studio Engineer Bil Lane. Silence & Light is committed to contributing profits from its music sales to numerous Charitable Organizations designed to help support the members and families of the Special Operations community, as well as first responders. In keeping with their mission, proceeds from music sales for their first album will be contributed to Warriors Heart and the Marine Raider Foundation.
