I was asked to watch the Memorial Day celebration in Washington, DC on saturday night. It was very moving and the stories of sacrifice and loss of loved ones for the sake of our Nation was sobering at the very least. I proceeded today on Memorial Day to watch another Memorial Day celebration of sacrifice at Arlington National Cemetery where the President and Vice President of the United States gave very moving speeches and recognized many families who had lost loved ones. In student ministry, these soldiers are mostly still in our wheelhouse of ministry between the ages of 18 to 25 years of age, which is still adolescence. I felt God's move in me saying, "Get in touch with those you know whose life were almost lost serving our nation" and I was able to reach one of them. Clark Blake was a Recon Marine that served in Vietnam. This means he was the toughest of the tough! I asked Clark to tell his story and he graciously did thouroughly in this interview. Clark and his family are true national and heavenly treasures! _______________________________ Looking for a new student ministry resource? Send us a textStrap in, degenerates. In this brutally honest, no-holds-barred episode of Ones Ready, we sit down with Recon Marine, The War Journal author, intelligence community insider, and potential future Ambassador to Afghanistan—James. Freakin' Sisco. This isn't your average “rah-rah” war story episode. Sisco takes us deep into the grit and grime of Desert Storm, recounts the absolute hilarity of rolling into combat with Oakleys and Guns N' Roses, and then slams you into an emotional brick wall with betrayal, loss, and the aftermath of trauma stuffed into a rucksack for 30 years. From saving lives with a handwritten journal to calling BS on the Medal of Honor fame train, Jim serves up reality checks hotter than a desert MRE. He even casually drops that he's running a global risk advisory firm, trying to be Charge d'Affaires to Afghanistan, and working on a freakin' miniseries with the Marine Corps. This episode is raw. It's hilarious. It's painful. It's human. It's what happens when the mission ends and the real battle begins—with yourself.
Resilience and Recon: The Inspiring Journey of Davey Lind In this week's Team Never Quit episode, Marcus and Melanie meet with Master Sergeant Davey Lind, a United States Marine, combat veteran, and motivational leadership speaker whose life story is a testament to resilience, courage, and the power of perseverance. Born and raised in Titusville, Pennsylvania, Davey embarked on his military journey immediately after high school, joining the Marine Corps in 1989. Over the years, he honed his skills and leadership as a Recon Marine, serving in pivotal roles from scout to team leader and participating in key operations, including Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Iraq War. On June 14, 2007, Davey's life changed forever when a pressure plate IED in Iraq led to the loss of his legs below the knees. Incredibly, he took his first steps just two months after the injury and has continued to inspire others with his unyielding spirit and dedication to recovery and service. Today, Davey is a sought-after motivational speaker, sharing lessons learned from the battlefield and life, focusing on leadership, adaptability, and grit. He resides in Corona, California, with his wife Lisa and their four children, where he continues to make a difference in the private sector with his involvement with PXG Golf. It became a great outlet for him and something to look forward to. He is actively involved in helping veterans heal in the context of golf outings and they have made more friends and memories from various golf adventures. Join us as we dive into Davey's incredible journey, from the challenges of combat to overcoming life-altering injuries and emerging as a beacon of strength and inspiration. In This Episode You Will Hear: • 35 in the Marine Corps, that's old. (14:04) • We were part of a surge in the summer of '07, and my vehicle struck and activated a pressure plate IED. This IED went off directly underneath me, and from that blast I became a double leg amputee. (15:02) • I rolled over on my back to try to use my left leg to push, and when I tried to do that, that's when I realized my left leg was gone. (24:50) • I'm married, I have kids, I have goals, and I was immediately aware of how challenging my life was gonna be. (25:17) • As a platoon sergeant, I was armed with both a rifle and pistol. That pistol was on my hip, and I had the conscious thought to end my life right there. I could do it before they could finish working on me. (25:33) • I had a very clear moment of calming, reflection of “everybody did their best.” I'm just gonna die here on the battlefield. (26:54) • My initial assessment was “You're gonna walk in about 10 months to a year. (33:32) • Being in a wheelchair, even as a gunny, is like the kids table at Thanksgiving. Nobody's talking to you; they're talking about you. (35:08) • There's a great relationship you have to have with your prosthetic doctor. The fit has to be tight, but not too tight. Then there's alignment. There's a lot that goes into it. (37:39) • Guys like me – a double leg amputee, I call guys that are single leg below the knee – we refer to that as a paper cut. (38:48) • Perspective is everything. (39:35) • I was able to retire though, which is important because I did a full 20 years, 6 months, and 3 days of active duty time. (46:15) • In 2018 I got one of the greatest phone calls I've ever received. Kevin Hudson from PXG called me and said, “We got a program going on - PXG Heroes. If I help you with this program, do you think you could golf a little bit more, and talk about the program, and introduce people to PXG. Would you be willing to do that? (48:19) • Golf is the only thing you can do competitively for the rest of your life. (62:45) • [Marcus] In the beginning you wonder why you got hit. You got hit so you can show people what it's like and stay up. Doctrine. We rely on it for many things both inside and outside of our training sphere. Sometimes it's called by a different name, but it's there, behind the scenes. Sometimes, we latch on to doctrine and adhere to it so literally that we actually do more harm than good. To dig into this, and hash out this topic, I also get to catch up and sit down with Blake Flannery. As a Recon Marine with a twenty year career, as well as a successful instructor outside the military, Blake has a lot of experience to draw from for this conversation. From his own unique learning experiences, to his observations as an educator, and more, we dig into quite a bit. We talk about the importance of principles, techniques, and fundamental understanding rather than specific skills or practices. We talk about the importance of constant improvement, as well as the dangers of institutional knowledge and the eroding effect it can have on a culture. We even get into personal reflection, and introspection, while talking about the importance of being able to articulate perspective and opinion when collaborating with your peers to define your own "best way" of doing things. As always, a great time getting to hear from Blake, and I think you all are going to get a lot out of this one. Amish Smith, a former Marine and current ROTC instructor, discusses his experiences in the military and the challenges of being a recon Marine. He shares his transition from the infantry to the intelligence community and his role in teaching basic skills to ROTC students. He provides insights into the rigorous training and physical demands of recon Marines, including the infamous slide for life and carrying heavy boats. The conversation explores the concept of stoicism and its application in daily life. Amish discusses his journey with stoicism and how it has changed his life for the better. He emphasizes the importance of living in accordance with logic, treating others well, and acknowledging the impermanence of life. We also provide some historical examples, such as Vice Admiral Stockdale's stoic mindset during his time as a prisoner of war, and the parallels between ancient conflicts and modern-day power struggles. The conversation covers various topics including the Peloponnesian War, the decline of Sparta, and the Israel-Palestine conflict. Amish Smith's transition from the infantry to the intelligence community provided him with valuable skills and knowledge to teach ROTC students. Recon Marines undergo rigorous training and face physical challenges such as the slide for life and carrying heavy boats. The Iron Owl Challenge is a demanding competition for ROTC units that tests their physical and mental endurance. Stoicism is a way of thinking and approaching life that involves living in accordance with logic and treating others well. Stoicism encourages individuals to acknowledge the impermanence of life and to live well in the present moment. Historical examples, such as Vice Admiral Stockdale's stoic mindset during his time as a prisoner of war, highlight the resilience and strength that can be gained from practicing stoicism. There are parallels between ancient conflicts, such as the Peloponnesian War, and modern-day power struggles, emphasizing the timeless nature of certain principles and strategies. The Peloponnesian War was marked by false starts and changing strategies, ultimately leading to Athens' defeat due to the weaknesses of their democratic model. Sparta's decline was caused by limitations such as a small population of elite soldiers and a reliance on helot slaves. The Battle of Lutra marked the end of Spartan ascendancy on the battlefield. The Israel-Palestine conflict is complex and rooted in historical and religious divisions. ROTC offers a great opportunity for students to serve their country, graduate debt-free, and have a guaranteed job. Military service provides valuable leadership experience and the chance to develop job skills that can be transferred to the civilian sector.

Retired Recon Marine Rudy Reyes has got quite the resumé. He's a wildly popular Call of Duty character, he played himself on HBO's Generation Kill, he hosts Special Forces: The World's Toughest Test on FOX - and that's just the popular stuff. He even founded a veteran nonprofit, Force Blue, that's dedicated to changing the world through ocean conservation, all while helping veterans along the way. Some might say Rudy's 'gone Hollywood', but pushing celebrities to their limits every week on national television isn't exactly a soft gig. Fact is, Rudy's still doing the same thing he's always done - kicking ass, taking names, and having a great time doing it. ---------- Chapters: 00:00 - Intro 01:20 - Navigating the State Department 11:25 - Close Calls in Africa 18:04- Cringe Contracting 32:03 - Special Forces Showbusiness 47:42 - Saving Our Oceans with Force Blue 01:03:31 - I Just Want a Tombstone ---------- Support Rudy Reyes - Website: https://rudyreyes.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/realrudyreyes Force Blue Veteran Nonprofit: https://forceblueteam.org Fueled by TeamDog | www.mikeritlandco.com | @Teamdog.pet ALL THINGS MIKE RITLAND: SHOP for Fueled By Team Dog Performance Dog Food, Treats, Apparel, Accessories, and Protection dogs - MikeRitlandCo.com - https://www.MikeRitlandCo.com Team Dog Online dog training - TeamDog.pet - https://www.TeamDog.pet Learn more about your ad choices. George Briones is a former Recon Marine (2007-2011) and Recon Instructor. He worked as the Director of Training and Programming at SOFLETE for eight years, holds a BASc in Sport Psychology and is currently studying to earn a MA in English language and literature. He coaches and educates a variety of athletes across a wide range of disciplines, from traditional strength and conditioning, and Olympic lifting to ultra endurance, combat sports, and preparation for military operational readiness, special selection and tactical competitions. He lived in Salt Lake City for several years during which time he trained and coached at NonProphet and became a dear, and trusted friend. George joined us for the Endurance is Love podcast, episode 175, which we recorded in March 2020 but didn't post until August 2021 and he was present for the late-May 2020 protests (mostly peaceful) that happened in SLC coincident with a NonProphet Symposium.Life has taken him to SoCal where he is the owner/operator of GB3 Athletics. George sat down with Michael to discuss the state of the "fitness industry", which of course, kicks the conversation off with a good critique ... or rant. They start by discussing the tendency for top level competitors — in this case BJJ but it applies to all sport — to focus solely on the competitive apex while letting the foundation slide, which leads to the concept of injury rehab as a powerful training factor, not only for peak performance but more importantly, longevity.George talks briefly about a 2010 deployment to Afghanistan, the difference between rules and principles, on-demand, on-the-ground adaptability and flexibility, and how sometimes, the solution to a perceived fitness problem is not gaining more strength but actually reducing the force or load being applied to the organism. The idea that (lack of) mobility is the limitation applies not only to soldiers moving across terrain but also in individual physical expression of strength or other fitness characteristics. It's a wonderful conversation wherein George presents his approach to training world champion level BJJ players, ultra-endurance athletes, and the seriously important concept of play in training because, if you're not having fun, you will compromise both intensity and volume and that could be the difference between a successful outcome or not.https://www.gb3athletics.com/https://www.youtube.com/@gb3athletics/videos

Mark spent close to 10 years conducting Special Operations for the reconnaissance and scout sniper communities, where he pushed himself mentally and physically the entire time to make sure he was proficient at his job. During this time, he spent four years in Southeast Asia and another four in Bridgeport, California, where he instructed mountain cold-weather operations and survival for snipers and other military members around the world. It's been another hard week in America. Another week with another catastrophic and horrifying school shooting. And as spring finally begins in America, this is an especially critical time to stay vigilant. The Nashville PD had leaders who stepped up. While others in Washington cowered and failed. And coming up, we're gonna break it down with a legendary special operations Recon Marine and tactical trainer–who's been in situations much like that many times. And trained many more. We're gonna dig into what those leaders did right to save lives…and get some tips on what you can do if you ever find yourself in a similar situation. And learn about ways you can help. Ways you can lead. Because in 2023 in America. It can happen in any town. In any city. In any school. On any day. And as we face the very real threat of violence not only overseas—but inside every community in America-we are all looking for leaders. Looking for the helpers. Having spoken to over 275,000 active-duty troops and led life-saving programs for over 4,000 active military and veterans at four Mighty Oaks Ranches around the Nation, Chad has become a go-to resource and is considered a subject matter expert on faith-based solutions to PTSd, having advised the former Presidential Administration, Congress, the VA, the DoD, and was appointed to serve as the Chairman of a White House Veterans Coalition. Chad is also the Co-Founder of Save Our Allies, a non-profit that's mission is focused on the evacuation and recovery of Americans, our allies and vulnerable people trapped in Afghanistan. On Veterans Day we want to shine a spotlight on the “Triple 7” event. In January 2023, Legacy Expeditions, a veteran-owned, extreme expedition company, is raising awareness and inspiring action to support the Folds of Honor Foundation through their upcoming global expedition, “Triple 7”. The seven-day, record-breaking skydiving adventure around the world includes seven skydives across seven continents, in seven days to raise $7 million in scholarships for military veterans and their families. Newt's guest is: Mike Sarraille. He is the founder and CEO of Legacy Expeditions, former Recon Marine and Scout-Sniper, and retired U.S. Navy SEAL with 20 years of experience in Special Operations, including the elite Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). This week's Team Never Quit Podcast guests, Mike Sarreille and Rey Baviera bring a gut-wrenching, firsthand account of their collective 35 years of military service as Navy SEALs - most notably witnessing the valor and heroism of fellow SEAL Michael Monsoor, who willingly jumped on a grenade to save those around him. While the story is brutal, it is equally heart-warming to know the source of “Mikey”s character and moral fabric. During his 20-year military career, Mike Sarreille served as a Recon Marine, Scout-Sniper, and a U.S. Navy SEAL Officer. Much of his career was in the Special Operations community, including the elite Joint Special Operations Command. He now works with small businesses and Fortune 500 companies on the principles of leadership, teamwork, entrepreneurship, and living a life of balance and purpose. Rey Baviera served almost 15 years in the SEAL Teams, with multiple deployments and operations in violent urban environments in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also worked as an intelligence and targeting officer at the Special Operations Command Pacific. He co-founded VTH Consulting, with the intent of bridging the gap between medical providers and veterans, helping veterans fight for the VA disability claims they morally, ethically, and legally deserve. May the memory of Michael Monsoor never die. Read the book honoring “Mikey” - Defend Us in Battle, wherever books are sold. In this episode you will hear: • Not all Marines are equal, just like not all SEALS are equal. Performance comes into play. • Rey: I had no direction, and I joined the military because I had made a promise to my brother. • Mike: I'm standing in for Rose Ray who wrote the book Defend Us in Battle alongside George Monsoor, Mikey's father. • My second time in Ramadi, I fired my weapon for the first time. • You don't really know what you're walking into until guys start getting wounded,. • Shark base [one of the places we slept] was once of Saddam's vacation palaces. We had tents in there. • We had to take bottled water showers. • Mikey spoke thru actions, not words. • It's highly competitive in the SEAL teams in a good way. • With each mission, we learned more lessons. • When you step into combat, there's a inter service rivalry. But eventually you get past the butt-sniffing phase. But when we mesh together, it's amazing what we can do as a team. • The longer you sit in a position, you lose relative superiority and the momentum shifts, because you're static. • It's different than training when you know it's a live grenade in front of you. • Mikey did not hesitate. He went right down on it. What came next was brutal. • While the SEAL teams may have trained Mike, his character and moral fabric of who he was was given to him by his family. His family is like nothing you've ever seen before.
