Steve Shaw In-StudioCottonwood Gunners for Vic4Vets InitiativeFundraiser for "Got Your Six Support Dogs"American Roots band Cottonwood Gunners in partnership with Affton MO venue 9 Mile Garden, are presenting their third annual veteran's benefit on Saturday, November 15 from noon to 4:00 pm. A fun day - in the wake of the Veteran's Day holiday - of music, drink specials, dogs, 50/50 raffles and more! 100% of all money raised will go to Got Your Six Support Dogs. GOT YOUR SIX SERVICE DOGS TESTIMONIAL - PARKER NAHRGANG As a part of Cottonwood Gunners veteran celebration, we honor our friend Parker Nahrgang and his wonderful support dog Eddie. A corporal in the US Marine Corps, Parker was deployed twice to Afghanistan – in 2012 and again in 2013. He was a part of the MWSS-273 (Marine Wing Support Squadron) where he spent the majority of his time in the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Edinburgh, Afghanistan. We have gotten to know Parker well and are not only amazed by his bravery, but also his willingness to say "yes" to the service of our country along with his humbleness. Eddie was a graduate of Got Your Six PTSD Support Dogs and never fails to impress us as well – he is indeed on-watch at all times! It's this first-hand knowledge of the profound difference that GY6 makes in veterans' lives that inspired us for this year's fund raise Parker's first deployment occurred less than three months after his daughter was born. Two years later during his second deployment, his son was born – but at least he was able to video call for the birth. During Parker's two Afghanistan deployments, he was faced with countless traumatic events that were nothing short of soul-crushing. Words can seldom describe what leaving a safe and loving home for a combat zone is truly like. It's an internal struggle that many veterans have faced overseas. In Parker's words, "Quite honestly, I don’t believe there are any words in existence that could adequately describe the experiences we face overseas." But the nature of war does not allow for the time to process or grieve. This Marine was able to make it out on the other side okay, and he says, "I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt Got Your Six PTSD Support Dogs gave me my life back." After exiting the Marine Corps, the trauma Parker had been bottling up for years was very evident. He became an emotionless shell of a man. Logically, he knew that he "loved" his family, but all the emotions that he "should" have felt didn't exist. Heart-brokenly and simply put, he didn’t care about his son, his daughter, or his wife. The emotional connection to them was nonexistent - they seemed like complete strangers to him. This is the horrible reality to living with PTSD. Add to that the PTSD symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger, nightmares and so much more including the inability to sleep with about 1-3 hours total a night and rarely longer than 30-minute stints. In Parker's words, "Countless veterans have experienced the same turmoil and suffering I have. Many of which still haven’t received the help they need. Unfortunately, the VA leaves many of us behind... If it were not for the overwhelming generosity of GY6 and those who support their efforts, my life and many others like mine, would be completely different. I like to imagine our souls are like big puzzles, and PTSD destroys that puzzle. But every person at GY6 selflessly takes their own pieces… pieces of their own heart and soul… and gives them to these dogs, it's with those pieces I was finally able to start putting mine back together. I cannot say it enough... Got Your six changed my life, the lives of many others before me, and continue to change the lives of those who came after me. I will never be able to repay GY6 for what they did for me. My hope is to inspire generosity in others so that GY6 can continue their mission, saving lives for many years to come." Speaking on from when after he came home from war and stuck in a terrible cycle of PTSD symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger, nightmares, and sleeplessness, "After a while, and thanks to a persistent wife, I started seeking mental health help. But nothing ever fully worked for me. Some medications would take the edge off my symptoms, but the struggles were still there controlling every aspect of my life. At one point I was on 9 medications that barely scratched the surface. One of the hardest things I had to hear was my doctor saying "Parker, I am sorry... I honestly do not know what to do". I was devastated... I had been holding onto hope that the suffering was temporary. But after years of holding on to that hope, trying countless GOT YOUR SIX SERVICE DOGS TESTIMONIAL - PARKER NAHRGANG medications, countless therapy sessions, countless doctors, and THEN to hear your doctor say we're out of options… Then, by what I can only describe as "an act of God" my wife encountered Got Your Six PTSD Support Dogs. During this encounter they immediately welcomed her with open arms, encouraging her, and began pursuing to helping me. GY6 informed me that it would likely be 1-2 years before they would have a dog ready for me. It takes time to train these dogs, and I just needed to breath, and wait. But after about 5 or 6 months, once again, by what I can only call a direct act of God, GY6 had more dogs pass their training than expected. That’s when I received a call from Nicole Lanahan (founder of GY6), and she asked me if I was ready. I attended their Service Animal training and therapy retreat for 10 days, which was the start of my life changing. The people I met and built relationships with was unbelievable, these connections were something I hadn't felt in years. I finally had a community of other veterans that were in the exact same boat as me, it was a place of belonging. We were not alone anymore, GY6 was holding us together, supporting us, and giving us a priceless gift. I want to help you understand what these dogs like Eddie do…and what he did that first night. At some point in the night during a nightmare he had crawled on me, nudging me, comforting me, he was sensing every time there was a nightmare about to happen and he would wake me "just enough" to not fully wake me, but stop the nightmare from happening, he stood watch, remaining vigilant throughout the night protecting me. Duty, Sacrifice, and Character: The Unshakable Resolve of LTC Daniel Gade This week's Team Never Quit guest, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Gade, brings us a story of courage, sacrifice, and resilience that will leave you deeply inspired. A two-time Purple Heart recipient, LTC Gade served with distinction in Iraq, where he led soldiers in some of the most hostile environments and endured life-altering injuries in the line of duty. But as you'll hear, his story didn't end in combat—it began a new chapter of leadership, healing, and purpose. Born on a North Dakota farm and raised with a strong sense of patriotism, Daniel always knew he was destined to serve. After graduating from West Point, he rose through the ranks as an armored officer, company commander, and eventually a wounded warrior whose leg injury nearly claimed his life. Through a long and painful recovery, his faith, family, and unrelenting grit propelled him to become a policy expert, White House veteran, Ph.D. holder, and educator at the very academy that shaped him. This conversation goes beyond the battlefield to explore themes of honor, duty, and the character that defines true greatness. Whether you're in the military or not, Daniel's story will challenge you to reflect on your own purpose and what you're willing to sacrifice for it. In This Episode You Will Hear: • I worry about whether the wars that we fought in – were they the right thing to do? I wonder if our national leadership is courageous enough to understand that these young men and women - their blood should not be sacrificed in vain. (9:53) • I hope our generation will do a better job of deciding when and where to go to war. (10:59) • I graduated West Point in '97 (13:47) • [Marcus – On 9/11] They sat us down. They hey had all the TVs on the wall. As we were watching it, the second one [plane] hit. (18:46) • My tank was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade on November 10th, and it killed the soldier next to me and wounded me mildly. (23:35) • I remember looking at him and the next day was veteran's day. And I remember thinking: “I know he's dead, but his parents don't know he's dead yet. And they're gonna find out on Veteran's Day.” (25:53) • At 26:25 Daniel recalls the experience of being hit by an IED. • It's a miracle that I'm alive, honestly. (28:41) • I end up spending a year in the hospital. (28:57) • People ask me if I have PTSD and I don't, but when I was unconscious, I had horrible, horrible dreams. (30:55) • I went from user-level wounded warrior, just a guy in a hospital bed, to being the guy whose office is overlooking the west wing from across the street. (38:05) • The book is called “Wounding Warriors”. It's on Amazon. (43:4) • The generosity that we do have for veterans is actually too much and in the wrong direction because it incentivizes all the wrong behaviors. (44:18) • The system itself disincentivizes wellness and positivity. It causes people to quit and to disengage from society. (48:08) • The whole system is basically welfare. (50:24) • What we need to do is re-orient the system towards employment and thriving, and towards changing goals from seeing how much money people can get to seeing how good an outcome they can get. (55:06) • We ought not label someone disabled until they've gone through the full rehabilitation process. (55:28) • If you want more of something, incentivize it. If you want less of something, tax it. (56:15) There's 6million people getting disability compensation, and 3.2 million of them are getting it for Tinnitus – ringing of the ears. (58:40) • We should take care of veterans the right way. Not turn them into welfare queens. As a senior Navy Chaplain, Bob Evan's calling has always been to serve and care for others, whether it was his troops, fellow service members, or the wounded warriors he encountered. When his fiancée, Gretchen, was severely injured by a mortar round in Afghanistan, Bob's role shifted from chaplain to devoted caregiver.Despite his extensive training and experience as a pastoral counselor, Bob candidly admits that he struggled at times to provide the proper support and care for Gretchen as she navigated life-changing injuries, including deafness. However, Bob's unwavering love and commitment to Gretchen never wavered. He made it clear that he would accompany her on this new journey, no matter the challenges. Bob's journey as a caregiver is one of resilience, compassion, and a deep understanding that true caregiving requires listening, learning, and loving the person you are caring for.As Bob shares his insights and lessons learned, it's clear that his role as a caregiver has profoundly impacted his own spiritual and personal growth. He has become an advocate for greater support and resources for military caregivers, recognizing the vital importance of self-care and finding respite to be an effective, loving caregiver.About Bob:Bob Evans, a graduate of Bowdoin College (A.B. - 1976), Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div. - 1979), Candler School of Theology (Th.M. - 1992), and the Naval War College (M.A. - 2003), served over 25 years in the United States Navy. He received the Bronze Star for his service in Afghanistan.Bob began his career with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in May 2011 as Chief of Chaplain Services at Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw, MI. He joined the Atlanta VA in January 2013 as Chief of Chaplain Services and later also served as Acting Assistant Director. Beth King joined the military to provide for her son and became the first female in her company to fully progress to the role of crew chief. One fateful night in Afghanistan, her Chinook was hit by an RPG, throwing her from the helicopter. Her harness caught her, saving her life, but the incident left her with serious injuries that were not immediately apparent to others.   She went 18 months without treatment, only to later discover that she had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI). As her symptoms worsened, she was eventually medically discharged from the military.   Her injury, compounded by PTSD, anxiety, and depression, led King to isolate herself. Eventually, the Wounded Warrior Project helped renew her sense of community, reigniting her love of sports and, ultimately, her zest for life. Now, it is King's turn to give back, helping other veterans find a sense of purpose as they return to civilian life.   Find out more about Wounded Warrior Project: https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/   Join the SOFREP Book Club here: https://sofrep.com/book-clubSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
